Introduction:

Welcome to Akai Katana. This is another bullet hell game which developed by Cave and published by Rising Star Games. Akai Katana is a horizontal bullet hell game which is similar to Deathsmiles.

Breakdown:

You as the player will play both "Slash mode" and "Origin mode" to obtain your achievements. There is a third mode called "Climax mode" but when playing that mode achievements are not unlocked. Some achievements are specific to a certain mode and it is often displayed in the achievement description. I will try and tell you the best possible places to go for an achievement. Origin mode contains 6 stages and slash mode consists of 5 stages. This game ALLOWS you to change the options under "Game settings" and still earn achievements. I will tell you if you can use continues or if you can earn the achievements in Novice mode (Before entering the game, hit "X" to switch it to Novice mode).

Once you get to the menu screen you should choose "Slash mode", this will earn you:

  • Opening Salvo

Upon successfully completing the game on "Slash mode" you will earn:

  • Hiiragi of the 10 Suns
  • Shumeigiku of the 10 Suns
  • Shakunage of the 10 Suns
  • War Fiend Hiiragi
  • Nazuna of the 10 Suns
  • Ayame & Ran of the 10 Suns
  • Emperor Bashou of the 10 Suns

For defeating the respective stage bosses.

You will also earn:

  • Attack Ships on Fire
  • M76 Heavy Tank
  • Tank Bombardment
  • Breaching Submarine
  • Armored Helicopter
  • Heavy Attack Helicopter

For defeating the respective mid-bosses on their respective stages.

Lastly you will also earn:

  • Learning Type 1
  • Learning Type 2
  • Learning Type 3

Depending on the respective ship you used to complete your playthrough.

Slash mode - Slash mode allows you to use Katanas and steel orbs in phantom mode to deal massive damage on your foes. There are 7 stages in Slash mode. In slash mode you should earn:

  • The True Mission
  • Destroying the Limit
  • 6000 Hits
  • 9999 Hits
  • Katana of Justice
  • Katana of Truth
  • The Hidden Form
  • Malice Speed Destruction
  • 400 Million and Counting
  • 600 Million and Counting
  • 800 Million and Counting

Origin mode- Origin mode consists of 6 stages and allows your phantom to deflect bullets and rotate items around your "option" for massive points. In origin mode you should earn:

  • 128 Hits!
  • 256 Hits!
  • Absorption Power
  • Decay and Dissolution
  • The Gold Ring
  • Big Catch
  • Bullet-proof
  • Back Against the Wall
  • 100 Million and Counting
  • 200 Million and Counting
  • The Sharpened Blade
  • #^&@%&!

All of the following achievements can be earned in either "Slash mode" or "Origin mode". I suggest playing the mode you are more familiar with when going for these achievements:

  • UUUURRRRGGGH
  • Sheer Grit
  • Melted
  • When in Doubt...Bomb!
  • Marigold
  • Orchid
  • Sakura
  • Summoning
  • Energy Gauge MAX
  • The Phantom

Conclusion: Akai Katana is very addicting and straight forward. It will challenge the players abilities to obtain 1000G. I recommend Akai Katana to all bullet-hell fans and any other people who wish to experience a challenging masterpiece. If you need any help for any achievement look at the achievement guide below. If it still doesn't help you, post and I or another member of the community will hopefully respond answering your query.

Hit a boss with 16 katanas.

The two possible ways to collect katanas are:

  • Using steel orbs to generate Katanas
  • Using Phantom mode to generate Katanas

I highly suggest using the steel orb method to generate Katanas. On stage one, hold down :rtbut: and get close to enemies to collect steel orbs. You can tell how many orbs you currently have by the number of circles lighted up around your ship and make sure all circles have lit up. Once you get to the boss fight enter phantom mode with :xbut: and shoot all steel orbs at the boss with :abut:. If all orbs hit you will earn "Katana of Justice" and generate 16 Katanas. Press :xbut: to exit phantom mode and shoot your katanas at the boss. If all of them hit you will earn "Katana of Truth".

Destroyed a mid-boss within 2 seconds.

*Novice mode allowed*

Start up Slash mode and once stage one loads up, maximize your phantom energy. Do this by holding :abut: and hooting enemies at a close range. Once your energy has maxed out, generate some steel orbs. Do this by pressing :rtbut: and hitting enmies at close range. After you generate like 6-7 orbs, enter phantom mode with :xbut: and press :abut: to shoot your steel orbs at various enemies. Shortly after the mid-boss will fly down, aim all of your Katanas at the boss and shoot them at it with :xbut: then immediately press :bbut: to bomb and hold :abut: to shoot the boss. The boss will die within 2 seconds and the achievement will pop.

"First off I'll start by saying that the achievement description is wrong for the English version it should read:

"Equip a total of 8 katanas and 8 steel orbs on your Phantom."

Anyone who views the achievement description for the Japanese version will notice the mistake. Also it doesn't take much to notice you can only have 16 items around your ship at any moment.

Once you know this it's rather easy to do, first off however this achievement can only be done in "Slash" mode and it's slightly easier with only one life as you can have more phantom mode energy when on one life.

Following guide is for the DEFAULT CONTROLS

First off you need to get eight steel orbs and turn them into katanas, to do this in the ship form shoot with the “:rtbut:” shot and kill the enemies to collect steel. You want to collect enough steel to make exactly eight steels orbs, you can see how much steel you have collected by the small circles that appear in the ring around your ship. The eighth circle is the one you want to stop at, just before you complete a full half circle around your ship.

(Note: for the next part the more phantom energy you have the longer you can stay in phantom form making this achievement easier to do. Also do not change back to the ship form else you will lose any items you have around your ship.)

Now once you have eight circles around your ship press the “:xbut: button” to swap to phantom form this will convert the collected steel to steel orbs. Now comes the tricky part you need to launch all eight steel orbs by press and holding the “:abut: button” into an enemy to turn them into a katanas, each one must hit an enemy to change into a katana. If one of the orbs fails to change into a katana you will have to start over.

You will likely now be low on phantom form energy, but while still in phantom form and with eight katanas now flying around you. You now need to use the “:rtbut:” shot of the phantom form to collect steel again this time to get eight more steel orbs to appear around you. Unlike in ship form however in phantom form as soon as you get enough steel for a steel orb it will automatically appear around you.

As soon as you get eight steels orbs and eight katanas around you the achievement should pop, but be sure not to fire or lose any of the katanas as you collect the final set of steel orbs, else you’ll be starting over again, same if you don’t have eight steel orbs before your phantom form energy runs out.

This will take a number of attempts I lost count of how many times I had too many or too few katanas, I also couldn’t do this unless I had only one life as I just didn’t have enough phantom form energy to collect the last few steel orbs otherwise.

One last tip for collecting steel the closer you are to an enemy when you get them the more steel you get from them.

Oh and items floating around your ship and phantom disappear over time, so speed really is required here.

I got this achievement on the first level after killing myself twice at the very start to increase my phantom form energy bar."

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2290/5-srpbo=.jpgBack Against the Wall - 30http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

While in Phantom form, filled up the screen with more than 800 bullets.

(Origin mode only)

*Novice mode allowed*

*Continues are allowed*

I suggest not doing it in Novice mode due to there being less bullets. You can do this on the stage 5 or stage 6 boss. Simply conserve your phantom energy and them press :xbut: to enter phantom mode. Don't press any buttons as you will get hit by the enemies bullets if you try and shoot him. You won't get hit because in origin mode, instead of accumulating Katanas and Steel orbs, you can bounce bullets back and forth. This makes you invincible in phantom form. Simply bounce bullets back and forth by running into them until there are 800 bullets onscreen.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2290/5-6JTkM=.jpgBullet-proof - 30http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Reflected more than 1000 bullets while in Phantom form.

(Origin mode only)

From the Origin menu screen, navigate downwards and enter "settings". From there, enter "Game settings" and change your life to 1. This allows you to store more Phantom energy thus giving you a longer time to bounce bullets. I suggest not using novice mode due to there being less bullets. During the first half of the stage before the mid-boss, gain phantom energy by point blanking enemies whilst holding down :abut:. After defeating the mid-boss, enter phantom mode with :xbut: and run into all bullets and don't destroy enemies. The achievement will unlock very shortly.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2290/5-9pttA=.jpg#^&@%&! - 5http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Got hit by a bullet in Phantom form, and then died from another bullet immediately afterward.

(Origin mode only)

Stage one is the ideal place to earn this. Simply gather a small amount of phantom energy and then enter phantom mode with :xbut: and hold :abut: to shoot (if you don't shoot bullets will bounce away from you upon collision). Once you lose phantom mode after being hit, simply run into another bullet.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2290/5-1Iv2U=.jpgAbsorption Power - 5http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Absorb items into your ship.

(Origin mode only)

To absorb items, simply Hold :abut: and destroy enemies at point-blank range and items will rotate around your option. From there, let go of :abut: and all items rotating around your option will be absorbed by you.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2290/5-72UqQ=.jpgDecay and Dissolution - 10http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Lost more than 20 score items that were rotating around your ship during a game.

(Origin mode only)

The description means your "Option" and not your ship.

To earn this, kill any mid-boss and hold down :abut:. The gold obtained from killing the mid-boss will turn red and then disappear earning you the achievement.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2290/5-8Wqjc=.jpgThe Gold Ring - 5http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Rotated over 200 score items (large) around your ship while playing as the Phantom.

(Origin mode only)

I suggest not using Novice mode as it will limit the amount of bullets being shot out by enemies. Obtaining this is easier on later levels due to more bullets present. Hold :abut: to kill enemies and gain phantom energy. Once your phantom energy is full, enter phantom mode with :xbut: and kill enemies at point blank range whilst holding down :abut: to attract score items to your option. Place your option onto enemy bullets to enlarge them and the achievement will unlock.

You should use Type 3 and try this on the 2nd mid-boss. Place your option on top of the boss, hold down the auto-fire button, and tap the laser button to produce lots of energy items fast. You will notice if you hit 72 pieces when your option can't hold any more energy in place and they start to leave the screen. Now, just graze the mid-boss' bullets. His patterns should be dense enough to make the energy items grow to maximum size before they disappear.

Earned 3000 hits (Slash Mode).

See "9999 Hits" for more details.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2290/5--wTx8=.jpg256 Hits! - 10http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Earned 256 hits (Origin Mode).

*Continues are allowed*

*Novice allowed*

To gain hits, you must enter phantom mode with :xbut: and hold :abut: to destroy enemies. A good way to earn this is on stage 5 of origin mode. On stage 4, conserve phantom energy so that at the start of stage 5 you have a near-full bar of phantom energy. Simply enter phantom mode and hold :abut: and point-blank the pillars to gain hits fast. After destroying several pillars, you'll easily reach over 256 hits.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2290/5-4Qt4w=.jpg128 Hits! - 5http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2290/5-uyXHU=.jpgThe Phantom - 15http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Caused a boss to change forms, or destroyed it while playing as the Phantom.

Only the second stage boss and onwards have a form change. You can tell when a boss will change forms by a small horizontal line which splits the bosses health bar into segments. Once enough damage is dealt so that the bosses Health goes below that point, they will change form. I suggest doing this on stage one. Simply get to the stage one boss and conserve your phantom energy. Damage the stage on boss until he is about to die, then enter phantom form with :xbut: and shoot him to finish him off to unlock the achievement.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2290/5-pSpOY=.jpgEnergy Gauge MAX - 5http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Filled up your energy gauge.

Start up stage one on slash mode and hold :abut: and point-blank enemies. Doing this gains you phantom energy. Once the bar in the top left of the screen fills up, you will earn the achievement.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2290/5-hzrVM=.jpgSummoning - 5http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Summoned your Phantom.

To summon your phantom, you need phantom energy (Green balls with an "E" on them). To gain this, hold :abut: and point-blank enemies. Doing this gains you phantom energy. once you have a small amount, press :xbut: to enter phantom mode to unlock the achievement.

Shot types / Fighter form:

Rapid fire - Enemies will drop items which refill your phantom energy. The amount of energy items released depends on how close your option is upon destroying the enemy. When using rapid fire, the option will trail your ship and the energy items will simply float off-screen.

Laser - Phantom energy will be generated in the same manner as using rapid fire (i.e. the closer your option is to an enemy, the more energy the enemy will release). However, when using the laser, your option will stay in place and the phantom energy will gather around your option. Grazing bullets will make the energy items grow in size and once you release the button, the items will be pulled into your ship.

Shot types / Phantom form:

Rapid fire - Enemies will drop items which refill your phantom energy. The amount of energy items released depends on how close your option is upon destroying the enemy. When using rapid fire, the option will trail your ship and the energy items will simply float off-screen.

Laser - This is a stronger attack at the cost of higher phantom energy consumption. The protective barrier vanishes and if the player is hit while using the laser, he will revert back to fighter form. Destroying enemies with the laser will cause an explosion that will cancel surrounding enemy bullets into gold. Some gold will also be produced by the destruction of the enemy itself.

Scoring in a nutshell:

  1. Destroy enemies in fighter form to gather phantom energy
  2. Destroy enemies in phantom form to collect gold
  3. Suck in the gold

Tips and Tricks to score well:

Gold -

  • As long as the players stays in phantom form, the gold rotated around the ship will grow in size. It is mandatory to grow the gold to maximum size as it will be worth MUCH more points both when cashing in and when calculating the end-stage bonus. However, once the gold has reached maximum size, it will vanish after a while.

  • The maximum pieces of gold that can rotate around the ship at the same time is 256. Everything generated above that is a waste. So the most basic rule is generate LOTS of gold AT ONCE (to quickly get the combo above 200 and then have enough time to let the gold grow)

  • When you cancel an enemy laser, the cancelled laser will be turned into large gold pieces. Less growth time required to get these large gold pieces to maximum size, so you will have more time to recharge for the next combo.

Tricks to Charge Your Phantom Energy Fast -

  • As mentioned above, point blanking with your option produces more energy items while grazing bullets will make the items grow in size. You must do both to gather phantom energy efficiently.

  • Lots of energy items can be spawned if the option is placed on top of an enemy and the laser-button is tapped while the shot button is held down. This works on all bigger airborne enemies as well as all enemies on ground level. This technique is essential to produce lots of items in a short time and it is often faster than destroying enemies. This strategy works best with Type C.

  • Every energy item will give you a certain percentage of phantom energy back. If you kill yourself at the beginning of the game, you will get a bigger energy gauge to work with. In return, this will increase the amount of energy a single energy item will restore. This technique can also boost your score significantly.

  • Enemy lasers will partially damage your ship, but they will also restore a good amount of phantom energy. If there is no other opportunity to get phantom energy, an enemy laser is a good way to quickly recharge it.

How to Swap Forms Effectively -

  • In general, the goal is to switch to phantom form as much as possible. The idea is to only cancel enemy bullets at the beginning of the phantom phase. This will give the gold time to grow in size as well as let the enemies cloud the screen with bullets. When phantom form is over, all bullets are propelled away. The enemies are vulnerable and can be killed at close range to gather energy. The returning bullets can be used to grow the energy items. If the player is fast enough and the positioning of the ship is good, the suicide bullets can also be turned into gold to boost the next combo.

  • Bullets get propelled further away when the phantom energy runs out. When the player leaves phantom form by choice, there is less of a risk that the bullets wander off-screen.

  • When phantom form ends, the option's position is similar to the ship's position which makes point blanking easier. You could be easily misled to get away from the enemy as quick as possible. However, this will often make the option harder to control. Instead, it is easier to wait until the option emerges and then move in the opposite direction that the option is supposed to go.

Bombs -

  • Bombs are the last resort weapon to use. However, there is almost no penalty for bombing. It is still better to lose a bomb than a life.

  • Picking up a bomb in phantom form will turn all bullets on the screen into gold. That means you will get a free 256 combo per bomb pickup if the pickup is saved until the boss fight starts.

Boss Milking -

  • Options to milk the bosses are very limited in Akai Katana. The first way is the method of picking up a bomb item in phantom form which is mentioned above. The other option is to end a boss-phase in phantom form to turn all bullets on the screen into gold. You can get up to 256 gold items. The exception to the rule is when destroying a boss in phantom form. Then, bullets and lasers add up and it is possible to break the restriction of the 256 items.

Rank -

  • The less lives you lose, the higher the rank you will get. A higher rank will result in denser patterns, especially in phantom form. This is essential to build combos fast in the later stages. If more than two lives are lost before the stage 5 mid-boss, the rank will usually be too low to score efficiently.

Route planning -

  • During the earlier stages, it is essential to have a plan of attack. Supereplays can help develop new tactics, but the most important thing is to practice. As a rough outline, you should meet the following score requirements after each stage (including the stage bonus):

Stage 1: 18,000,000

Stage 2: 60,000,000

Stage 3: 125,000,000

Stage 4: 185,000,000

Stage 5: 260,000,000

Stage 6: 300,000,000+

To gain large amount of points in Slash mode, you need to utilize the katana and steel orb system to cancel and destroy many bullets and enemies. Like Origin mode, completing a level without dying gives you more points and having a large hit counter also increases points earned. Watch the video below to understand how to achieve a high score.

Change the lives to 4 in the game settings to make this easier. You should keep in mind some details about type 3:

  • Very spread-out shot.
  • Powerful Phantom mode.

With this in mind, type 3 is very powerful and quickly kills bosses so you should always make sure you have plenty phantom energy for the bosses. Type 3 also has a very spread shot which allows you to kill multiple weak enemies quickly and efficiently. To further improve the chances of unlocking this, you should learn enemy placements and bullet patterns. Remember also that the option can be moved manually.

Change the lives to 4 in the game settings to make this easier. You should keep in mind some details about type 2:

  • Option locks on to enemies.
  • Phantom mode allows you to position option.

With this in mind, type 2 is very effective, it's auto-aiming option allows you to focus on the more powerful enemies whilst your option auto-aims at the small enemies closing in on you. Also a note, when you trigger a boss fight and you're in phantom modem you can hold :abut: and place your option on the boss so that when they are able to get hit they will take massive damage due to the option point-blanking them whilst you are shooting from a distance. To further improve the chances of unlocking this, you should learn enemy placements and bullet patterns. Remember also that the option can be moved manually.

  • Linear shot but can cover a wide range depending on option placement.
  • Very linear shot phantom mode.

With this in mind, type 1 seems the hardest due the very shallow spread of bullets, but with good option placement you can easily cover half of the screen. To further improve the chances of unlocking this, you should learn enemy placements and bullet patterns. Remember also that the option can be moved manually.

At the end of every level, you will fight a member of the 10 suns which are the bosses of the level. As you go through the game, the bosses will be harder and harder with the later bosses having more forms and you doing less damage to them. To unlock the "boss" achievements, you have to destroy the bosses at the end of each respective stage. All boss achievements can be achieved in 1 playthrough assuming your playing on slash mode. This is because stage 5 is not present in origin mode thus the "Nazuna of the 10 Suns" achievement is unobtainable.

To make sure you get all mid-boss achievements in one playthrough, make sure you choose slash mode. The reason for this is because origin mode doesn't not contain stage 5, thus preventing you from earning "Armored Helicopter". All stages have a mid-boss and as you complete stages, you'll notice the mid-bosses becoming stronger and stronger. All you have to do to earn the achievement is to kill the respective mid-boss. However, keep in mind that mid-bosses can time-out thus preventing you from earning the achievement. A time-out happens when you don't kill a mid-boss in a certain amount of time. If this happens, the mid-boss will fly off-screen never to be seen again. Therefore you will have to restart your playthrough for a chance to obtain it again.

To prevent this from happening, made sure you have bombs because they do massive damage. To use a bomb press :bbut:. You can also make sure that you have katanas or steel orbs which also deal massive damage.

To earn this achievement, you must play on slash mode. It helps to memorize enemy placement and boss bullet patterns. Also, remember that to fight the true last boss, you must NOT die once. If all criteria are met on stage 7, you will automatically fight the true last boss.

The video above shows you some tactics to do when going for this achievement. Use your bombs wisely when playing the game and save them for the later levels. For stage-to-stage tips visit This thread to view my strategies for clearing bosses and hard sections easier.

Easily obtainable during the first stages mid-boss. After the boss sprays bullets everywhere, he will use 2 lasers to attack you. Simply run into the laser to get damaged and die.

You can change your game settings to give yourself 4 Lives. To earn this achievement, you must complete the game without continuing and without pressing :xbut: to enter phantom mode. A very detailed and helpful guide can be found here: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?p=696137#p696137

Keep in mind that it is in Novice mode but don't let that fool you as in later stages it can get very hard. As said before, knowing boss patterns and enemy placements will help you and practice is needed to achieve this.

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/achievements/2290/5-ifTs4=.jpg9999 Hits - 55http://www.xbox360achievements.org/images/site/gp-g.png

Achieved a 9999 hit combo (Slash Mode).

*Continues are allowed*

*Novice allowed*

To achieve this easily you should attempt it on later stages. These are the ways to increase your hit count:

  • Holding down :abut: whilst in "normal mode" and killing enemies.
  • Holding down :rtbut: whilst in "normal mode" and hitting enemies.
  • Holding down :rtbut: whilst in phantom mode and hitting enemies.
  • Holding down :abut: whilst in phantom mode and killing enemies.
  • Hitting enemies with steel orbs.
  • Hitting enemies with Katanas.

To gain many hits, it's best to aim your Katanas at many bullets destroying them and gaining hits fast. Stage 6 has many bullets on-screen and it is very easy to obtain this if you use your katanas on enemies and bullets alike. If you don't have enough bullets to cancel, you can kill enemies whilst holding down :abut: in phantom mode to spawn suicide bullets to aid you.

Keep in mind dying does not reset your hit counter.

Simply start up any mode then run into the first bullet you see.

Sorry for reviving the topic but I'm having a hard time with "Big Catch". I just have to keep the A button pressed and gather "E" balls around my option, right? Then make it through bullets so they increase in size. I have done it several times but it never seen enough. There is any other good spot for trying this one? Thanks

That's exactly what you have to do. Have you tried the later stages? It will only work efficiently in later levels. Try stage 3 or 4.
