Introduction

 

Shadow of Mordor is a third person open world game based in Middle Earth (of the Lord of the Rings franchise). You play as a human ranger that an elf helps through his battles and gives advice. The game has no difficulty setting and doesn't always prepare you with information on how to do certain things. When you start the game, start tackling the story missions. You do not have to sneak everywhere you go, go ahead and run to missions and start them. Orcs will lose interest soon enough. You might feel overwhelmed at first and feel there are no safe areas. Just play and you will start getting much more comfortable with the game. There are collectibles, but luckily they appear on the map when you do the Forge Towers. The towers are already on the map and act as a fast travel point. There is only one online achievement and that is for avenging a fellow friend (on your friends list for Xbox). When a captain kills them, you will get a mission called Vendetta. There are a lot of achievements for doing certain kills/branding and of course lots of side mission stuff. It's actually a good mix for the game.

 

Step 1: Play through story and various missions

 

Play through the story missions and get the misc achievements. Doing the weapon legend missions will be a good idea too in order to get some nice rewards that will help with the rest of the game. The collectibles only give a small amount of XP so you can worry about them later if you'd like. Just grab the ones that are on your way. Pay attention to the map and look at what challenges you have to do (hunting and survivalist). This will all make it easier when you mop up.

 

Step 2: Mop Up

 

After you finish the game you can now go grab collectibles and achievements you my have missed during step 1. There should be a good amount of things for you to complete, so go ahead and grind away at them.

 

Conclusion

 

The achievements are all pretty fun with the exception of a few annoying ones. The game can be difficult at times, but you can overcome the hard parts by leveling up more on other easier missions you have to do anyways. Once you unlock all your powers you'll be able to do a lot more against warchiefs and captains, as well as finishing off the misc achievements.

Brand 5 Bodyguards of a Warchief, turning them against him in combat.

 

You must have 5 bodyguards branded and all guarding the same warchief. Easiest to do after you beat the game and get upgrades. Once you have them, bring out the warchief and activate the branded captains.

 

STEPS

1. Choose a specific Warchief
   
2. Brand captains and command them to be a bodyguard to him
   
3. Do the mission to get them noticed (appears new after command)
   
4. Once there are a total of 5, go bring the Warchief out
   
5. All bodyguards will come out with him. Press for achievement

Unlock 4 Dagger Rune slots.

 

In the Weapons & Runes section in the menu, you can equip runes to your three weapons. You must use your in game (M) Currency to gain access to these slots. They get more expensive as you unlock them. You gain this currency through normal progression in most things you do.

Use Strike From Above while at least 60 feet above your target.

 

To strike from above, you must hold and press while higher than an enemy. They will be outlined in red when you are able to perform the move. You will jump on to them and attack. There are upgrades to this but you do not need any of them for this. A really great place to do this strike to make sure it's 60 feet is from a Forge Tower. Climb to the top when enemies are around it and you can attack from here to get the achievement.

This is story related and completed very early on in the game. You will eventually actually buy this power and be using it for other achievements.

Poison a Captain at his own Feast.

Poisoning gets introduced within the story line missions. Afterwards you will be able to poison a drink container called a "Grog". It is a drum looking object that contains the alcohol for the orcs. Go up to it and poison it with the prompted button on screen. You can then leave and if the captain drinks out of it, he is poisoned. Poison doesn't exactly mean you are "killing them", but they get upset and angry and start attacking people around them because of traitor suspicions. You should eventually see some kind of mission talking about a captain celebrating with a feast. Should be in the form of a Power Struggle mission (an orange icon having to do with power altering conclusions). Poison the grog and wait until the captain makes his rounds for a drink.

Activate all Forge Towers.

Forge Towers are important because they reveal all of the collectibles in the area as well serve as the game's fast travel system. The areas you have done will be in blue. They will appear on the two maps that you will be playing on. The 2nd map will unlock as you progress the story.

This is a story related achievement. The icons on your map that are yellow are story based missions. You will get "Visions" from specific ones, which are found in your menu system.

Make 20 uruks flee by dropping Morgai Fly nests.

 

These Morgai Fly nests look like bee hives. You shoot them down with your arrows and they drop to the ground and tons of these flies attack the orcs around them.

There is a story mission that at one point you have 3 of them to shoot. You can shoot all three and then fail on purpose to start over if you're looking to get this out of the way quickly. Otherwise you can do this at any point in time. There are indeed lots around.

Issue a Death Threat, and then successfully kill the target.

 

Unlock the Death Threat ability first, in the upgrades menu when you are able to. Find a captain and dominate them (hold to grab them and press ). They must have a green skull above their heads in order to be dominated. Now issue the death threat to another captain from the army menu when it opens up. Go find this captain and kill them. You may want to get intel first.

Free 5 caragors from cages.

 

A Caragor is a monster/animal that runs on 4 legs. It is either running around in the wild or can be let out of a cage. There are a good amount of them around in the game. You just have to strike the front of the cage with your sword or shoot it from a distance with your bow. A reason to let them out of the cage is to either ride them (must have certain upgrade/s) or to let them loose against enemies.

Start a Riot by commanding a Warchief to attack another Warchief.

 

As you progress through the story you'll eventually have earned the ability to brand/mark your enemies. You will begin to do this with captains as well. During one of your main missions you are supposed to have branded warchiefs. Once you have one, you may then find a specific mission on the map to "meet" with your branded warchief. You must then grab him and use the command button. If you highlight the warchiefs, you will see where it says "riot" on it. Choose to start a riot to gain the achievement.

Brand all 5 Warchiefs.

 

One of the main missions will tell you to brand all 5 warchiefs to continue the story. That being said, this is story related and you must do it. The game will teach you how to brand and command. Doing missions to rank up your branded captains to become bodyguards, then to help them take out the warchief so that they themselves become a warchief. Which counts as being branded since they are already yours to command. The branded ones will have a blue aurora on them. A great way to take out warchiefs easily is to start riots with your already branded ones. A lot easier of a fight with not much sneaking around needed.

Use the Detonate ability to burn 50 uruks.

In the upgrade menu you will see the Detonate ability. Purchase this. You need to shoot a campfire where orcs are around with your bow. It will cause a big explosion and set orcs on fire. You will have many opportunities to get this. You can be as close as you want, because you will not get damaged yourself. You can also shoot the "grogs" which look like drums to make them explode.

Liberate 30 slaves in 180 seconds while riding a caragor.

 

Slaves appear as smaller black/white arrows. After gaining the ability to ride a caragor you will have only 3 minutes to free 30 slaves. It's best if you scout out an area and find where there are bunches of them. Once you have the caragor you are free to jump off it and back on. Just remember you must be riding it while the slaves are being freed. This can be a tricky achievement and there are various routes people have found which will be posted soon as the best one is available.

Eliminate the bodyguards of two Warchiefs, then draw them out and kill them.

 

You can eliminate bodyguards by gaining intel and seeing how many there are and who it is (there are lines connecting them to the warchief). Kill the bodyguards first so that the warchief has none, then go kill him.

 

Alternate: If you keep having branded warchiefs riot non-branded ones, you can kill the bodyguards then eliminate the warchief. I was able to brand them then simply press with the Dispatch upgrade to kill whatever was near me. This unlocked the achievement, though I was not trying for it.

Brand a Captain while in combat.

 

"While in combat" means actively being attacked or pursued by enemies. You must use the combat finisher for branding ( and ). This does not work against a lot of higher ranking captains, but the lower ones you should have no trouble with. Use intel to find these captains who have a vulnerability to combat finishers.

Now get your streak up and do the branding finisher on them to gain the achievement as well as instantly brand them. This is even easier done by having the ability to make hit streaks only 5 instead of 8.

There are a total of 32 Ithildin collectibles spanning over both areas (maps) of this game.After gaining Forge Towers, you get shown where these are on the map. They are symbols and you must press to go into the mode to see them. Pick them up when prompted.

Complete all Survivalist Challenges.

 

There are 10 survivalist challenges to complete. They are not an icon on the mini map, but granted to you right away. You must find and gather the various herbs/plants around the world. They do appear on your mini map as their own icons. Just match the color/shape of the icon with what you need. Check the map screen by hitting the back button so that you can see your progress. You can complete a certain amount before you have to continue the storyline to get more.

 

Below is an example of a few of the icons. Highlighting the various regions of the map will display what herbs are there for you to collect.

Complete all Hunting Challenges.

There are 10 hunting challenges to complete. They are not an icon on the mini map, but granted to you right away. You always have a hunting mission until you complete it. You start at 1 from the beginning. Check the map screen by hitting the back button so that you can see your progress. You can complete a certain amount before you have to continue the storyline to get more.The hunting will start to evolve and get more difficult. When it come's to killing a Graug, just know that you will be taught this in a story mission with a dwarf. It's easiest to let this hunt come naturally. You can look at descriptions of the various wild life in your menu if you need a reminder of what they are.

Complete an Outcast Rescue Mission.

Complete all Outcast Rescue Missions.

There are a total of 24 of these to do. The Outcast Rescue Missions start from a Mission Giver. These are small clenched raised fists (the icons).

Once you have freed the slave he will let you know about the mission which then appears as the same icon but with a shield icon around it.

Just free the slaves from the poles to complete the missions. They are all fairly simple/easy and give you decent rewards

Complete a Vendetta Mission.

 

Warning: Online required

 

A Vendetta Mission will eventually appear while you play the game. Based on if your online friends are dying, you might get to avenge them. If for some reason you have no friends playing, then the game will pick random people for you to avenge. It will appear as a new mission. Complete the mission by killing the captain to gain the achievement.

Kill all 5 Warchiefs before any uruk take their place.

 

A decent amount of people are getting this in conjunction with the story events that take place in the first area of the game. While you can worry about this now, it is very easy to do after the end game. Go back to area one. You will be very upgraded and the warchiefs/captains will all still be low level. Brand the warchief of your choice, and use him to do the Riot command against other warchiefs. Make sure you kill or brand all of the bodyguards (all whom show up for this fight) and brand the warchief (alternate route is to just kill them right there). If you have all of the warchiefs branded and they have no bodyguards, all you have to do from that point is press to kill them when they are nearby. Go to each place where they are on the map in which you call for them. Dispatch them and go on to the next. Should only take a few minutes.

Collect 100% of the Artifacts and listen to their memories.

 

Artifacts are found in the game on the ground. There are a total of 42 of them. In the upgrade menu you can find a progression bar for it. Once you do the Forge Towers you can see them on your map. Just go into mode and pick them up. You then have to spin the objects around that you find until you find a glowing symbol on them. Press to play the memory once you are prompted to.

Help a Captain survive a Recruitment Power Struggle, and then kill him and all his new recruits.

 

There are specific power struggles called "Recruitment" that you will need to play. No other type of power struggle will work. Look for the specific mission when it appears.

Once you have this mission, play it. Let him succeed (do not let him die). Once the screen shows that it was a success and he ranks up, you will need to kill everything else on screen including him. Defeat him and everyone he had recruited (varied amount of enemies depending how the small battle played out). Even if he hadn't been successful recruiting anyone since you were detected, the achievement will still unlock (like it did below for me).

Complete all Urfael Legend Missions.

 

There are a total of 10 missions per weapon (sword, dagger, bow). That means 30 total. You can check your progress in the weapons section above the runes. You will sometimes need to have progressed in the game and unlocked certain abilities in your upgrade menu. The icon will be a picture of a lock and will tell you what you need to do the mission. Complete them all to get the achievement. They are rather short and usually fairly easy (only some prove annoying or challenging). But a few tries should be all you need.

After an uruk kills you to become a Captain, help him become a Warchief, then kill him.

This can be pretty easy if you have cleared out a few spots and no one has taken them as a warchief.

 

STEP 1

 

Let any uruk that is not already a captain kill you. They will be promoted and on the board. Take note of the name because you need to make sure you keep him alive up until the point of him becoming a warchief.

STEP 2

 

Now you need to get him up the ranks. Do his power struggles and make sure he is being promoted and growing power, but after you do that, attack him and do your brand. Then command him to "promote" on an empty spot of the warchief lineup.

Now there will be a power struggle to become the warchief. Help fiend off his attackers and make sure he survives. Kill the other captain. Once that is over, he will be warchief.

STEP 4

 

Now comes the super easy part. Press and it will instantly kill him. You can do this right after you helped him promote in the struggle. Don't even let him walk away, just hit the dispatch button and the achievement will unlock.

Perform an Execution on a flaming Berserker.

A Beserker is the big orc with two one handed axes as his weapons. To make them flaming you must push them into a fire (or somehow get them on fire). As the are on fire you can perform any type of execution on them. At higher levels you will have your combo starting at 5 instead 8 which will make this a lot easier.

Capitalize on a Warchief's Fear.

 

Gaining intel on a warchief will allow you to see their strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes their weakness will be a specific fear. Such as fear of fire or various monsters. Once you have the opportunity to expose this weakness, do it to gain the achievement. You may have to try a few times because things can obviously go wrong (premature death of captain, body guards, etc).

Attract caragors with bait 5 times.

 

In various areas, you will see meat hanging above ground. If you shoot these with your arrow, they will fall to the ground and attract caragors. This is great to distract and kill guards if you need the help.

Quick Question about this if anyone may know?

 

"Lord and Master 10

Brand all 5 Warchiefs.

 

Once you gain the branding ability, you will have to seek out all current warchiefs that you have in your selection. None of them can already be dead, so you'll have wait until they get filled spots again."

 

Are you able to brand bodyguards and then just kill off the War Chief at which time one of the bodyguard captains should take their place already branded. Does that work or do you have to commit the act of branding the war chiefs?

I'd like to make a small correction if you don't mind, Tyger. "Repaid In Blood," the achievement for completing a Vendetta, does not require anyone from your friends list. I only have one friend playing this and I see them pop up for random people all the time. I actually got mine for doing one for WORLDEATER, yet he is not on my friends list

The Guide Team usually meshes info from both guides when it gets published to the site and both members get credit I enjoy when a game has two guides; variation is always best!

D and othrers, Yeah variation is good. Hard to play anything but Destiny at the moment anyways so things always come together slower. I do really enjoy this game though.

About that online thing..is WorldEater a real person or maybe the game was giving random fake names? The only time I had ever seen anyone get vedetta missions was that same guy on my friends list who is only one I have seen playing. Also it happened twice in a row.

I actually found it's easier to do Stinking Rebels in one attempt. Just brand 5 captains, make them all a Warchief's bodyguard then lure that Warchief out. Your 5 branded captains will be with him and all you have to do is press Up on the D-pad to get it.

 

Also, No Power in Numbers essentially requires the ability Dispatch as it allows you to kill all branded Uruks and Monsters. Just help your branded captain with the recruitment mission and, once he's been successful, press Down on the D-pad to kill him and all his followers together.

I did No Power In Numbers before Story Mission 2, doesn't require it at all. Morgai Fly nests made it ridiculously easy.
