Introduction

The Banner Saga is an SRPG (strategic role-playing game) where you take control of a band of humans and Varl (giants) on an epic viking journey, with combat similar to Shining Force using a turn- and grid-based combat scheme. It is the first of a planned trilogy, and available on the Xbox Store for $19.99.

I suggest a minimum of three full playthroughs to get all the achievements (possibly even four, as Warmonger would be much less difficult on Easy but can't be done at the same time as the other two achievements done on Easy). Overall the game is not too hard to complete (although the final battle can be quite troublesome, especially on Hard), and it is an extremely beautiful game with a great battle system and story. I highly recommend it.

Note: If you are viewing this guide on the front side of XBA, I have re-ordered it on the forums in the order you will unlock most of the achievements, so viewing it from here may help you.

General Tips

Stats: Focus on Armor Break and Exertion first. Most of the enemies in the game have high armor and can't really be damaged until you weaken that. Being able to do more damage to armor, and using exertion to increase that damage, is very important. Then go for strength, as this increases damage output, which will actually harm the enemies.

Characters: Alette and Rook will be required for the final battle of the game, so leveling them is a good idea. They are also great characters to use for armor damage, sniping from afar. As described below, I found Yrsa and Oddleif indispensable for the final battle. Then you'll want two very strong Varl to tank for all these archers. I used Hakon and Gunnulf, and they don't really even have the best armor stats. Mogr might have been a better option for one of the slots.

Items: I found it best to give any items with "armor break" to my archers, as they could stay out of damage and weaken the shields so that my varl or other melee characters could dish out damage more quickly. Then give anything with +str or x%dmg to those melee characters so they can get critical hits (with the exception of the final battle, where Alette and Oddleif will want +str items).

Final battle: During the first section of this fight, you will need to get your archer into position to use the "Silver Arrow" on him (it becomes their special ability), which requires a bit of his armor to be depleted. If he gets a turn, he heals, so damage him quickly while your archer is in position. During the second part, make sure you attack Bellower ASAP because he gets the "forge ahead" skill and will take his next turn immediately. This is good because it doesn't let the other enemies get involved in the fight. If possible, surround him and use Rook's "Mark Prey" ability so that all your characters that are in range attack at once for an insta-kill.

One skill I found invaluable during this fight was Oddleif's "Rain of Arrows" for two reasons: first, it stops an enemy in their tracks, so if you can lead an enemy to walk over it, they stop immediately and won't reach you to attack on their turn. Second, it does a ton of damage. If she is at full health and it was a Rank 3 ability, she does her normal strength damage and it increases with each arrow (str, str+1, str+2) which will whittle his health down quickly. I coupled Oddleif's ability with Yrsa's "Slag" ability, which does a bunch of armor damage and leaves hot coals that will do strength damage if walked over. Give them items that increase strength and armor break, respectively. Then use Rook's "Mark Prey" ability to finish him off.

Links: The GamePressure guide is a very good walkthrough, and this guide for the events is helpful as well to know what the outcomes will be.

Step 1: Normal Playthrough

This will be your "completionist" playthrough. You will get 9 semi-story related achievements for visiting the godstones during your journey. You can choose not to visit them, but are prompted to do so which is why they are only sort of missable; you'd have to specifically choose not to go to them. You will also want to recruit every possible character to get the 18 kill related achievements (one of the recruits voids a few other achievements that you'll do in the second or third step). Make sure you rest every chance you get for the "High Spirits" achievement (multiple times per camp site if necessary), collect five of the items for the "Treasure Hunter" achievement, and do the extra fights for the "Diplomat" achievement (as well as at least 40 total for "Warmonger").

Note regarding the kill-related achievements: these can all be done in practice battles. If you don't think you'll like a character or it is too late in the game to really use and level them (Nid, for instance) you can just get a kill in the Training Tent and never take them into actual battle.

Step 2: Easy Playthrough

This will be your "speed run" playthrough. You will focus on "Quartermaster" and "Forced March" mostly, as both of these work well together. They will require you to move quickly without anyone dying of hunger (which happens when you move too slowly and use all your supplies). Basically just buy every camp's entire stock of food and then leave immediately without resting to make sure you unlock both. You'll also want to get "Innocent" and "Beat the Odds" during this playthrough. Avoid using Alette during human/varl battles (only dredge), and follow the steps to make sure Egil lives through the entire game.

If you didn't get "Warmonger" on your previous playthrough, it is actually a bit easier to get here since the battles will be easier to win and you will not have any trouble using the "pursue" option to get two battles during each War.

Step 3: Hard Playthrough

This will be your "careful" playthrough. You will be playing on Hard and can not lose any battles for the "Challenge" achievement. If a battle is going poorly, simply load a previous save file. At some point after Sigbjorn joins your party, but before reaching Boeargard (because the Training Tent will no longer be available), make sure you go for "Master Tactician" at a camp site.

Step 4: Cleanup

If you made any mistakes along the way, or were not able to get "Warmonger" on your Normal or Easy playthroughs, start a new game and get those achievements to finish up.

All of the godstones in the game are semi-story related. I say that because your caravan will pass by them automatically, and you will receive a dialogue option of what to do. If you choose any option such as "move on" or anything similar, you won't stop and you won't unlock the associated achievement. So when you come by these stones, just make sure you choose an option that will have you either staying the night, looking for supplies, or simply inspecting the godstone. The achievements will all unlock as you leave the area.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/3312/111229-lo.jpg Normal Difficulty 25

Complete the game on Normal difficulty.

Story related and can not be missed. Do this on your first playthrough.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/3312/111251-lo.jpg Hard Difficulty 50

Complete the game on Hard difficulty.

Story related and can not be missed. Do this on your second playthrough.

This difficulty isn't that much more of a challenge, until the final battle. This gets quite a bit more touchy, especially since it is broken into two sections, and after the first you will have one less character to use and likely a few that have been killed during the first phase and enter the second part with lower strength. See the Road Map for the strategy I used during this battle.

Note: You can not change the difficulty at the end of the game to get credit for this, the entire game must be played on Hard by changing the difficulty in the settings at the main menu before starting your game. Also, the achievements do not stack, so you will not unlock the achievement for Normal if you do this first.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/3312/111224-lo.jpg Diplomat 25

Unlock by getting permission to destroy a varl landmark.

After you arrive in Einartoft (and after Iver is defeated by Bellower), you will have a few options: destroy the bridge, fight on the bridge, or leave. Make sure you choose to fight on the bridge. The first day, you can participate directly in the fight or treat the wounded, it doesn't change anything which you choose. The second day, you can fight or clear the bodies - if you're trying to keep Egil alive, make sure you fight, otherwise it doesn't matter which you choose for this specific achievement. The third day is where you are forced to fight. You learn that Fasolt died the day before, and he will be replaced by Iver who is now healthy, and furious. After the battle, he confronts Jorundr, who will finally agree to let you destroy the bridge.

Important: this achievement does not unlock until the end of the game when the credits roll, so don't worry that you don't get it after the bridge is destroyed. I assume they did this so you don't get the achievement and reload an earlier save to keep Fasolt alive.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/3312/111231-lo.jpg Innocent 15

Alette doesn't want to harm humans or varl...don't make her.

If you get into a battle against other humans or giants, make sure you either do not bring Alette with you (if you have the choice), or just make her do nothing for the entire battle. You will also want to make sure you DO NOT recruit Onef in Chapter 4, as there is an unavoidable story event that will happen in Chapter 6 that will void this achievement. The achievement will unlock when the credits roll.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/3312/111234-lo.jpg Quartermaster 15

Complete the game without letting anyone in your caravan die to hunger.

As you move from location to location, you can see how many days worth of food you have available at the top of the screen. Before leaving any camp, make sure you buy their entire stock of food, and don't rest there as it will use up your food before even starting the journey. There are a number of Random Events that can take place during your journey that can either help or harm you. When one occurs, refer to the link to decide how to handle it. Since you will likely be coupling this achievement with "Forced March" you will want to select outcomes that do not increase your day count, and ones that do increase your supply count (both at once if possible).

The trickiest part of this is when leaving Frostvellr at the beginning of Chapter 4. You do not have enough supplies to get there, and the supply cost in the town is astronomical (1:1). If you haven't used much renown (I had 61), you can stock up to 12 days of supplies and make it. Otherwise, you'll have to buy as much as possible and hope for really good random events that will gain you supplies. Reload and earlier save if necessary. When you get to the next town, the supply cost is much better (4:1) and you can stock up with whatever renown you have left.

Because you will not be resting during the journey, your morale will plummet so you can't get this on a run where you want to go for "High Spirits" at the same time. The achievement will unlock when the credits roll.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/3312/111237-lo.jpg Challenge 50

Complete the game on Hard difficulty level without losing a single battle.

Hard difficulty is not that much harder than Normal, you just need to rest more to recover if a unit gets killed in combat. Doing this on your second playthrough will help as you will have a better idea of what each unit is capable of. Make sure you are fighting as many battles as possible though, as you will need a lot of renown for the "Master Tactician" achievement - and focus on leveling only the units that you will have access to when you are in Chapter 6. If you feel that a battle is going poorly, you can load a previous save at any time so you shouldn't accidentally fail.

I've read reports from the PC version that if you get a "Defeat" screen and reload, it remembers and the achievement will not unlock, so be sure to reload BEFORE you lose the fight. I have not tested this on Xbox though.

Note: There is one story-related loss in the game while fighting on the bridge. You always lose that and will still unlock the achievement.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/3312/111239-lo.jpg Treasure Hunter 15

Acquire 5 rank 5 items.

There are 12 total Rank 5 items in the game. A few can be purchased in the market and will show up randomly. These are: Bjorg av Leander, Namej's Ring, Statue of a Sightless Man, and Obsidian Bell. They cost quite a bit of renown (20 each), so I'd suggest getting a few of the others, which require specific actions during the story to acquire. These are:

  • Chapter 2: Calabilla - When you arrive in Frostvellr, choose to camp outside the walls. Then, at the beginning of Chapter 4 you will start outside and have three optional battles. If you win all three, you acquire it.
  • Chapter 3: Five Ring Necklace - at Denglr godstone you need to choose "Gather whatever you can" and then "Take the necklace for yourself" to acquire it.
  • Chapter 4: Shepersky Stone - you need to loot the storehouse with Onef before you leave Frostvellr and take everything for yourself.
  • Chapter 4: Godscale - at Marek godstone you need to allow your caravan to continue collecting scales until they find them all.
  • Chapter 6: Dundr's Hand - when you are travelling, allow Krumr to go back and fight dredge when he asks. He will return a few days later with the new item.
  • Chapter 6: Bjorulf's Blessing - during an event shortly after Sigbjorn joins, choose "help him recover" and he will give you this item.
  • Chapter 7: Ash Mead - Choose to look for supplies in Boersgard (shake down option), and then on the next day you will receive a hint to its location. Spend another day looking for supplies to collect it, and on the next day after a fight you can visit the location. Choose to keep it however you retrieve it.
  • Chapter 7: Stravhs' Whetstone - at Stravhs godstone you need to choose to climb higher and look for another piece. After returning to Boersgard the item will be given to you.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/3312/111245-lo.jpg High Spirits 50

Complete the game without ever getting low morale.

For this achievement, make sure you rest a few times every time you camp so that when you leave your morale is at "Great" to be safe - assuming you have a stock of supplies. If you rest without supplies, people die of hunger and morale will drop anyway. If you don't rest enough, morale will likely dip to "Low" status while travelling. However, you can camp at will while travelling by pressing Y to see the HUD options, and choosing A to camp, so unless you're not paying attention it shouldn't be an issue (and you can always load a previous save if you do notice you've hit "Low" morale on accident). The Random Events as you travel will help as well, depending on how you handle them. Check the list when one occurs so you know what to do to avoid a loss of morale. The achievement will unlock when the credits roll.

Whew...Egil made it the whole way!

There are a number of actions in the game that will lead to Egil's death. Choose the correct options in the four situations below to ensure his survival.

  • Chapter 2: When you have to choose if Egil and Alette fight with you, send them away. [OR] Let them fight in the battle, but make sure that you choose to shoot an arrow at the dredge that is threatening Alette after the first battle (any other choice results in his death). The first option is easier, but either works just fine.
  • Chapter 2: When you have to choose how to get into Frostvellr, if you want to ambush the supply wagon make sure you win the fight. [OR] Just choose to get in through the gate or sewer options.
  • Chapter 4: DO NOT recruit Onef. He will kill Egil in Chapter 6 if you do.
  • Chapter 5: Make sure you personally fight in the battle on the bridge on the second day in Einartoft. If you choose to clear the bodies, he will die. [Not sure if you choose to leave the city or destroy the bridge on the first day what happens, if someone can test this for me.]

If you follow the proper steps above, he will not die. Dying in battle does not affect this achievement, as your troops always heal and return to your party. However, the events above will cause his actual death and removal from the game. The achievement will unlock when the credits roll.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/3312/111253-lo.jpg Forced March 25

Reach Boersgard in 120 days.

You'll want to couple this with the "Quartermaster" achievement. Check that description for tips, and make sure that in addition to leaving camp without resting that you are buying any food that is available and addressing any Random Events properly so that you do not increase your day count or lower your supply count.

I made it to Boersgard on Day 104, and the achievement unlocked after a short cutscene in the city after I was able to select a location to visit on the city map.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/3312/111257-lo.jpg Warmonger 25

Fight 40 battles in a single playthrough.

You will likely get this on your Normal playthrough, since on Hard you will likely lose too much health and have a few deaths after each battle. When you finish a battle during a "War" situation, you get a dialogue option to pursue the dredge, and doing so will count as a second battle. However, you'll want to make sure you have the majority of your troops alive and healthy if you do, as it will spawn 3-4 new enemies, which can quickly kill you if you're weakened from the first battle. This is why doing it on Hard is, well, Hard.

If you don't manage to get it on your Normal playthrough, try it during your Easy speedrun playthrough. Battles on Easy will have less enemies, allowing you to use the "pursue" option more easily. Practice battles in the Training Tent do not count toward this achievement, so don't waste your time with those unless you find yourself struggling in battles and need the practice.

Tips:

  • Follow the GamePressure walkthrough. It does a great job of explaining what different options will lead to. Follow any instructions that lead to a fight.
  • Choose the "pursue" option at the end of every War battle for a second battle.
  • Check the Random Events list for anything that might lead to a battle and choose those dialogue options.
  • At the end of Chapter 2, choose to stay outside the city walls. This will give you three optional battles at the start of Chapter 4.
  • Recruit Onef at the start of Chapter 4, this leads to an unavoidable fight during Chapter 6.
  • Fight all three days on the bridge during Chapter 5.
  • Choose "start cutting through the dredge" when you reach Haukstorp in Chapter 6, then pursue further for a second battle.
  • Fight every day in Boersgard during Chapter 7 (though you'll likely have the achievement before then).

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/3312/111259-lo.jpg Master Tactician 25

Win a battle on Hard difficulty in the camp Training Tent using 6 rank 5 units.

You will want to do this achievement at some point after Sigbjorn joins your party. Eyvind and Sigbjorn are both Rank 5 when they join you, so that is two out of the way. Focus on four other characters you enjoy and get them to this point as well. If you level up too many characters at once, or buy too many supplies/items, you may run out of renown to get enough units to Rank 5. To rank up a unit, you also need to get a certain number of kills before you can even spend the renown, so make sure you are getting the final hit on enemies with the characters you want to rank up (Rank 5 = 14 kills).

I would suggest you focus on some combination of Rook, Alette, Tryggvi, Gunnulf, Iver, and Hogun or Mogun. Some of the other characters in the game won't be with you at this point, so spending renown on them will be a waste. Make sure you do a manual camp site sometime BEFORE reaching Boersgard. This is the final destination of the game and the training tent is not available after that.

The actually battle is not that difficult. If you've reached this point of the game on Hard to even attempt it, you'll be well prepared for it.

[if someone wants to test something - see if you can level up your characters on an Easy "Warmonger" run and then try to get this achievement simply by switching the difficulty to Hard when you have enough characters at Rank 5. I can't find any mention from the PC version is this does or does not work.]

Abbreviated Achievement Walkthrough

Playthrough 1: Normal

Chapter 1:

You can get five of the kill-related achievements here. Nothing else special to pay attention to.

Chapter 2:

Make sure you DO NOT ambush the supply cart to get into Frostvellr (this kills Onef, who you need later) - select the gate or sewer options. You can choose to camp outside the walls when you get inside Frostvellr (required for an item in Chapter 4), or choose to stay inside which will lead to a different item (you can only get one of them). There are another five kill-related achievements possible during this chapter, and one godstone to visit.

Chapter 3:

There are another two kill-related achievements possible during this chapter, and one godstone to visit. Get the Five-Ring Necklace when you are at Denglr Godstone.

Chapter 4:

If you camped outside the walls in Chapter 2, choose to fight all three optional battles to get the Calibilla item. If you camped inside, agree to help Onef at the beginning of the chapter and steal the supplies to get the Shepersky Stone item. This will also allow him and Ekkill to be recruited for their kill achievements. Collect all the scales at Marek Godstone to get the Godscale item. Allow Oddleif to train the women to be archers. There are another four kill-related achievements possible during this chapter, and three godstones to visit.

Chapter 5:

Make sure you fight on the bridge on the third day for the Diplomat achievement (which won't unlock until the end of the game).

Chapter 6:

Continue to encourage Oddleif to train the archers, and eventually you can encourage and recruit Nid (for one of the kill achievements). Allow Krumr to leave camp and fight the dredge on his own to get the Dundr's Hand item (he will return later). When you arrive in Boersgard, do not tell them that Sigbjorn drank all the mead to get the Bjorulf's Blessing item. There is one kill-related achievement possible during this chapter, and three godstones to visit.

Chapter 7:

Choose to look for supplies two days in a row when in Boersgard to get the Ash Mead item (really only need this if you missed one earlier - otherwise this item is kinda useless and wastes time, just make sure you get the next item). There is one godstone to visit. At Stravh's Godstone, choose to climb higher and find another piece of the stone to get the Stravh's Whetstone item.

Playthrough 2: Easy

Chapter 1:

Nothing

Chapter 2:

Send Alette and Egil away when given the option so they do not have to fight.

Do not ambush the supply cart to enter Frostvellr.

Chapter 3:

Nothing

Chapter 4:

DO NOT recruit Onef.

Chapter 5:

Take part in the battle on the bridge during the second day (do not choose to clear the bodies).

Chapter 6:

Nothing

Chapter 7:

Nothing

Playthrough 3: Hard

There should be nothing special to do during this playthrough in any specific chapter, aside from making sure you do not lose any battles and use the training tent with a full squad of Rank 5 allies.

I might be blind, so feel free to laugh at me (:p), but do you have a time estimate for the Easy playthrough?

I started it last night, and skipping all dialogue and as many fights as possible, I got to the end of Chapter 4 (of 7) in less than two hours. So probably around 4 hours for the speed run (which I should finish tonight).

10-12 for your first Normal playthrough. Hard might be 6-10. And then a few more if you aren't able to get Warmonger during your Normal or Hard run. The time might come down to 20-25 but I was being safe with that estimate.

Ha, that might be. Van Helsing was two, King's Quest 2 was three, this is three. It's not my fault!

Finished my speed run last night. Only six achievements to go, and I should be able to get them all in a single Hard run. The battles on Hard aren't as bad as I thought they'd be so far - only got in five last night before I quit for the night, so we'll see if I end up getting frustrated later on or not. I've got a lot better at the battle system as well.

Looking forward to hearing about Hard! I won't be able to finish my first Normal run until the end of the weekend, most likely, so it's nice you keep writing guides for games I like lol. Saves me time and effort.

Lack of perma-death should make Hard easier, I would imagine.

FYI to anyone interested as a supplement to this guide, Synzer over at GameSkinny wrote a great general tips and tricks compendium for new players. I learned a fair bit about Armor vs. Strength, stats, etc. from it.

Edit: Just noticed you updated your guide with some links. Perfect!

For Beat the Odds, this part...

Chapter 2: When you have to choose if you want to ambush the supply wagon, either choose not to or at least make sure you win the fight. Since you'll likely be doing this on Hard and can't lose any battles for "Challenge" anyway, doesn't really matter which you choose.

... never happened for me. I got to Chapter 3 without experiencing it. Does this mean it is/was a Random Event, meaning there are potentially other things to look out for that murdify Egil? Giant man-eating ravens looking for a snack? Poisonous figs? BRANCHES HE CAN TRIP OVER!?

I fear for his virgin safety.

So yeah, you're good. That issue only arises if you attack the supply cart.

Hard mode isn't so bad once you get a few characters to Rank 5, but I don't see how you can get Warmonger during this playthrough. If you don't nail it on Normal, it'll need its own Easy run, which is what I'll be doing. Too many fights end with my party very weak, which doesn't allow me to use the "pursue" option to get a second battle out of it.

Also good to know. I've been pursuing all fights for this very reason, I was worried about it on Hard.

Any way to manually save on this, reason I ask is twice now the games kinda frozen on the enemy turn. It's just got to their turn and refuses to do anything, the games not frozen as such as the stationary animations are still playing as is the music but they just don't take there move.

On both occasions the last save point has been like 5 battles back which on one occasion lost me an hour of time.

Other than that what a fantastic game.

Five battles back is pretty impossible unless you somehow had them all string together with conversations and whatnot (not done the game, could totally be the reason, just seems crazy from where I am).

The game autosaves at critical junctures:

- When leaving a battle that does not immediately load into another battle or conversation

- When leaving camp

- When leaving a conversation

- When leaving a random event

- When completing a chapter

+

- Dedicated slot to chapter start

The dev did it this way (without manual save) to reduce the effectiveness of save scumming, and it works - to a degree. You can still load your save before a conversation/event resolves, so if someone dies in said conversation/event before it resolves, you can quickly make sure it isn't permanent. Being a strong opponent to save scumming, I've already lost an awesome team member to something I could have prevented :(

Gotta live with your decisions. But in the case of the game freezing in combat, that really sucks!

I save scummed the shit out of the beginning of Chapter 4 to not get Poor Morale, lol (I feel like such a cheater). That was terrible. Also, that Random Events wiki is a sack of crap - not once was it correct out of many times and I just had to go off my own intuition and trust my gut. Loaded many times before I got an event that gave supplies so I could hold on to Normal Morale before reaching my destination lol.

You sure weren't kidding about that spot. People starved, but I kept the Morale achievement! Yeesh.

I need to change that link tomorrow, I found a much better one recently.

Since that will be a reminder to myself, I also need to add more tips for getting extra battles in Warmonger.

Compared the events in that link to what I've done, and yes, that is a hell of a lot better than the other and is actually accurate. Better worded, as well.

Also, I see in Warmonger's description that you say both battles in a war count towards the 40, but didn't you say earlier that it only counts if you do the second? I'm a little confused but probably just me not understanding something easy.
