Introduction

Earthlock: Festival of Magic is an RPG with turn-based combat from Norwegian studio Snowcastle Games. It is a love letter to the JRPG genre, and you'll find all of the trappings of those games here, with many Western influences as well. The game was funded on Kickstarter in 2014 and launched as a Games With Gold title in September 2016. There are two sequels planned, and people who chose an Xbox One code in the original Kickstarter campaign will also get the second game for free.

If you missed getting it for free, the game costs $30 on the Microsoft Store.

WARNING: Game Breaking Glitch

There is a glitch that will halt your game's progress and require you to start over (unless you have an earlier save file). Please see this thread for more info to avoid this glitch. I'll remove this warning if it gets patched.

General Tips:

  • You may find at times that you are getting destroyed by the game's bosses. You're probably not alone. I had to grind an extra level or two multiple times throughout the game and return to try again. You may also need to adjust the next two tips for each individual boss.
  • Play with the Talent Board often. Don't just pick a bonus and leave it. For instance, if you hit a boss who uses magic, switch out all your normal defense nodes for magic defense.
  • Pay attention to your bond bonuses. If you hit an enemy that does heavy bleed damage, bond two characters who get a bonus immunity to that so they will survive longer. And remember, bonds are only active if the two party members are paired.
  • Save often! If you see a new enemy and a save point is within reach, use it. Because you won't be familiar with their attacks, there could be a chance of death.
  • The Goblin King boss early in the game will counter every time you hit him with a melee attack. Use ranged only with Amon and Ive, have Olia use her own counterattack prep, and heal/support with Gnart. Extra tips for this boss can be found here.
  • Speaking of Gnart, don't forget about his support abilities! This is especially important early in boss fights. His support spells affect the entire party, so having him in this stance and buffing the party in the beginning is better than using haste or healing a single character early on. You may need to switch to healing later though.
  • One more tip on Gnart: he's a freaking powerhouse later in the game. He seems like a fairly weak healer early on (Regen isn't that great later on) but after the halfway point he learns Heal (recovers 40% HP) and a Whirlwind attack that immediately becomes the strongest attack in the game. Using the super version of it, you can kill most bosses in two hits (assuming you've filled his entire talent board with magic enhancements like I did).
  • When you reach the Plains area, don't bother to fight the enemies here. Head straight to Suvia to continue with the story. I don't know why, but these foes are ridiculously tough. They can kill you in two hits, and many of them hit all your characters at once.
  • In Suvia, it can be confusing how to move the story. After speaking with the woman in the library, head to the basement. You can move a bookcase here and enter the sewers.
  • When you need to recover the four elemental items, the one in Ramoo is a bit confusing. The Tremel Tree to the West seemed useless to me early in the game (the enemies were too tough and there was only one chest), but now that we have Pat and have leveled up a bit, we can tackle this location. There is an inspection point on the right side where Pat can pull a bridge across to continue exploring this area and find the story item. The other three are much easier to find, in normal dungeons found in the Burning Desert (Franir's Lair), the Plains (Tower of Dhur), and Nadir (Anvirum Cavern).
  • The story requirements for being able to ride the train can be found here. Some people seem to get stuck at this part and keep getting a generic message that they have more to do in Suvia.
  • Make sure you do the elemental item in Nadir last. This section requires the Fire Blast++ recipe to break down many of the ice walls, which is received from the boss in Franir's Lair.
  • For the final area of the game, the Stasis Chamber, I personally avoided every shadow creature and made sure I never got in a fight. You should be able to see them in the water before crossing a bridge. Move to the other side of the bridge and walk extremely slowly to avoid them chasing you. If there are creatures on both sides of a bridge, either backtrack and take a different one, or try walking directly in the middle slowly. Once you get to the boss, see Step 2 below for a full strategy.

Step 1a: Get to the Stasis Chamber

There are no missable achievements in the game, so you can play the story "blind" if you'd like and just enjoy it. That said, there are a number of things you can work on along the way. Make sure you fight every enemy you come across. Many enemies look very similar but just have a color variation, so be sure to kill everything you see to fill up the Bestiary. Also be sure to open every chest possible. None of these are hidden much, and there are more than the 50 needed for the achievement. Don't forget to switch your character bonds whenever you hit Level 5 with someone so you minimize any grinding later. And finally you'll want to return to Plumpet Island often to work on the crafting and harvesting achievements.

Once you get to the Stasis Chamber, this is the point of no return and you will head to face the final boss.

Step 1b: Grind Time

You'll likely still need to do some leveling, bonding, and farming at this point. Find a good place where you can group up 6-8 enemies and kill them with little trouble (the multiplier caps at 8x) to get any remaining characters up to Level 20 and keep rotating your pairs so that you finish getting to Level 5 with all your bonds, which will allow you to fill up the Talent Boards. Whenever you're out of enemies or low on health, return to Plumpet and heal, and harvest your garden for a minute to eventually max out all the plants.

You'll also need to finish crafting all the perks, which is where all that money you've got over the course of the game will finally come in handy. There are a number of perks that you'll want copies of for all your characters as well, so craft them in preparation for the final battle.

Step 2: Beat the Game

The final boss in Earthlock is tough... very tough. However, you can make things much easier on yourself by getting to Level 20 and filling your Talent Boards first. This will ensure you have the most health, attack, and defense possible. As for your perks, make sure everyone has a copy of Master Health (+15% HP), And Back Again (one free resurrection upon death), and On the Brink (as your health goes down your damage goes up). You could also have Battle Medic (+15% health from healing spells), It's a KO (after a kill, next hit is critical), and Immunity Chance (10% chance you don't take damage from an attack), but those are slightly less important. I would also suggest having at least 20 of the Healing Elixir+ items on hand.

The trick to this battle is stacking as many bleed and fire trap debuffs on him as possible. Start with Gnart using Attack Focus, Olia using Blood Shout, Ive using Fire Trap, and Amon using Gouge. Now every time the boss attacks, he will lose another chunk of health on top of what your attacks did directly. Try to use Ive's super ability after her Amri runs out to stack a few more traps as well. I personally let everyone die and let the And Back Again perk rez me instead of trying to heal before his first big AOE attack. Immediately use the HE+ items on each person to get back to full health, then resume the strategy from above.

When the boss raises up and begins summoning shadow versions of the party, he will be immune to all attacks, so use that time to heal and buff your party. Try to kill the shadow enemies with someone who has the It's a KO ability, then wait until he comes out of his immune state for a guaranteed critical hit.

With this strategy, you'll be much more successful than I was when I went in blind. After the boss is defeated, you should receive your last achievement and have your 1000G. Congrats!

Defeat one of every enemy

There are X enemies in the game to defeat for this achievement. The game has a Bestiary in the pause menu where you can track your progress. None of the monsters are missable, though a few are optional and you could pass them up in the story without really noticing. This post has a list of all the enemies (in the order you'll find them in the Bestiary) and their locations.

There is one enemy in the Bestiary that will require the From Beyond perk used in the Spiritualist of the Sands achievement. Kill a ghost in the frozen underworld of Nadir for the Nafnlaus.

Open 50 Chests

There are very few "hidden" chests in the game. The most they do to hide them away is put them behind a fallen column on the ground or inside a crack in the wall. Even then you'll be able to see a piece of the chest. There are more than 50 chests in the game as well, so even if you miss their weak attempts at hiding those few, you'll get this easily before the end of the game.

Harvest 1000 Fruits

Once you reach Plumpet Island you'll get a short tutorial on the game's farming system from Frogboy. You will plant various types of seeds in the garden and can water them by lining up the vertical and horizontal blue bars (this is just so they grow more quickly; they'll still grow eventually even if you don't water them at all). After a few seconds (again, this will be faster if they're watered correctly), the plant will begin to shimmer, meaning it is ready to be harvested. Simply pick the plant to receive some crafting materials and you'll get credit for one harvest. Repeat 999 more times!

This will definitely come easily as you play the game. You will need to return to Plumpet often to restock your ammo supplies (the plants you harvest are used to craft ammunition for your ranged attacks). Plus you have to fill the entire garden and level it up for other achievements.

Fully level up every type of plant

To level up a plant, you'll need to harvest it often. I'm not sure on the exact number of times it takes for each level increase, but if you pick the plants a few times each visit to Plumpet Island, you should get each of them maxed out before you get all the other achievements. If not, simply stand in your garden and pick them over and over for a while. You get more ingredients from higher level plants, so maxing them out earlier in the game may be beneficial if you want to spend the time.

There are eight types of plants in the game, as follows:

  • Spud - Story related
  • Revival - Story related
  • Fire - Story related
  • Aqua - Story related
  • Cactus - Story related
  • Shock - In a chest next to the Quadragon boss (Taika rescue)
  • Snow - Story related
  • Poison - In a chest next to the Mushriga boss

Once you fully level the basic version of a plant, you will see a notification that it has mutated, and a new seed type will be added to your inventory. Plant this new seed in a new slot and continue to level it the same way you did before. There will be a third mutation for the final version of each plant. Once you level up the third version of each plant, the achievement will unlock. Note that you do not have to keep the basic versions planted to unlock the achievement, and in fact you'll be forced to uproot at least two of them since there are only 22 seed spots, but 24 total plants. You only need the third-tier plants in the ground and and fully leveled to unlock the achievement.

Note: It has been found that you actually need a recipe that involves the plant type to get the next level of seed. The one most people seem to hit this issue with is the third tier of the poison plant. Make sure you do the "Konkylian Custodian" achievement to get the Toxic Lance++ recipe. Once you have that, the plant will mutate properly. But again, every plant requires this process. Find the "+" version to get the first mutation and the "++" version for the second mutation.

Fill up the garden with plants

There are 22 seed holes in the garden and you simply need to have a plant growing in each of the spots. As you continue to harvest each of the plants, they will mutate and award you with a new seed to plant. You will get three of each plant type eventually (so 24 seeds total) and will be able to fill up the garden. See "Lango Plantmaster" for a bit more info.

Craft one of each Perk Talents

Perk Talents are upgrades that will go in the Talent Board. There are 16 total different perks that can be crafted (there are other perks in the game but they don't have a corresponding recipe). You'll often be given one copy of a perk for free on top of the recipe itself, so make sure you actually craft a second copy of the perk to get credit for this achievement {unless you get credit from the free one?}. The perks that can be crafted are as follows:

  • Air Master - Loot: Galeacle (Barnacle Quest)
  • Ammo Master - Loot: Varluk (Story)
  • And Back Again - Loot: Sentient Train (Story)
  • Battle Medic - Loot: Twisted Guardian (Story)
  • Bonds of Battle - Loot: Sharan (Story)
  • Beast and Human Buster - Loot: Aderyn (Story 1)
  • Double Turn - Reward: Zaber Tournament (Gold Rank)
  • Earth Master - On the table in Plumpet Library (Story)
  • Electrical Master - Loot: Shockle (Barnacle Quest)
  • Energised - Loot: GobKing (Story)
  • Fire Master - Loot: Burnacle (Barnacle Quest)
  • Ice Master - Loot: Icicle (Barnacle Quest)
  • Immunity Chance - Loot: Nahraan (Story)
  • On the Brink - Loot: Hollow Knight
  • Pat Origon 2.0 - Recruit Pat (Story)
  • Plants and Elemental Buster - Loot: Tremelbone (Story)
  • Quick Rest - Reward: Suvia Tournament (Gold Rank)
  • Quick Step - Loot: Aderyn (Story 2)
  • Strong Resolve - Loot: Mushriga
  • Water Master - Reward: Complete the Barnacle Quest

Each of these will require a blank tile plus a number of crafting materials. You should get most of the materials fairly often throughout the story, but if you're ever missing something, the list below will help you find what you need.

  • Air Core - Rare Loot: Air Elementals
  • Blank Tile - Store: Frogboy
  • Core - Uncommon Loot: Any Enemy
  • Earth Core - Rare Loot: Earth Elementals
  • Electro Core - Rare Loot: Electro Elementals
  • Fang - Store: Frogboy
  • Fine Blossom - Rare Loot: Plants
  • Fine Claw - Rare Loot: Beasts
  • Fine Cloth - Rare Loot: Humanoids
  • Fine Plate - Rare Loot: Elementals
  • Fine Wing - Rare Loot: Insects
  • Fine Wire - Rare Loot: Mechs
  • Fire Core - Rare Loot: Fire Elementals
  • Gland - Store: Frogboy
  • Goo - Store: Frogboy
  • Horn - Store: Frogboy
  • Parchment - Store: Frogboy
  • Scale - Store: Frogboy
  • Shard - Store: Frogboy
  • Small Cog - Store: Frogboy

Level up all characters to level 20

There are six total playable characters in the game. The final two added to the party (Taika and Pat) join quite under leveled compared to where the rest of your characters will be when they join, so unless you spend some time getting them up to speed right away, they will likely be left on the sidelines for the majority of the game. You'll have to work on their levels and bonds at some point though.

To level up more quickly, it is beneficial to group together as many enemies as possible. Obviously this will make for a tougher fight, but if you have your super abilities charged, you can easily take on 6-8 enemies at once. You get a multiplier for every extra enemy, so you can rack up a few thousand xp in one battle if you're bold enough.

You'll likely get to Level 20 with your main group before the end of the game, so you'll just need to grind with the other characters a bit somewhere safe where they won't die and lose out on the experience. I personally used the first area of the Tremel Tree until it stopped giving experience, then the first area of the Underwater Mile.

Fully level up all Bonds between all characters

Bonds can be formed once you have three party members. The bond is used to get passive bonuses as the bond increases, as well as charge up the super abilities for your characters during combat. You will select two party members to be grouped together, and any actions those two characters take during battle will charge the super meter. Once you activate the super ability, you'll be able to use special abilities for both of the characters until the charge wears off (each ability uses a different amount, and you get five charges). You can use it all with one character or split it between the two if you'd like.

As for leveling all the bonds, this comes from simply fighting battles together. You'll want to pair one set of characters and fully max out their bond (Level 5), and then switch to a new bond. The only exception to this might be the first bond you finish, as you'll likely not be finished with the bond you have going on your other two characters, since the fourth character doesn't join at the same time as the third.

As with the Champions of Umbra achievement, you'll likely have two characters who sat out and did not form bonds throughout the game, so this will take a bit of grinding to unlock later on.

Completely fill all the Talent Boards

The Talent Boards are basically the game's version of skill trees. There are a few set abilities inside each talent board, and the rest of the board is blank to start. When you fill in the blank tiles to touch the set ones, those skills/bonuses will activate (and you can swap them out for something else if you don't use them). There are three different types of slots, so you may need to wait for a drop or craft something depending on the slot you want to fill compared to when you actually earn the talent point to fill it.

Talent Points (TP) are gained once per level, though you also earn bonus TP from Level 1/3/5 of the Bonds you form with each character, so this will be where the majority of your points come from. You'll get enough Stat (round) and Ability (diamond) cards throughout the game to fill all those nodes, but the Perk (Jigsaw Piece) nodes will take some extra crafting to fill in. See "Great Wave Alumni" for help with that.

The one character who can be a bit confusing in this task is Taika. Taika's ability cards will be earned by using his Sixth Sense ability on specific enemies to learn new attacks (whereas everyone else gets theirs from chests and/or bosses). These are as follows:

  • Lightning - Sparktank
  • Frost Bite - Barghest (Blue)
  • Gust - Little Marvel (Blue)
  • Quake - Crabler

It's possible you could learn these from other creatures, but these are the four that worked for me.

Return all barnacles to Plumpet Island

After reaching Plumpet Island for the first time, you'll be given this side-quest by Frogboy. You'll need to find and defeat four specific enemies throughout the game and return them to the island. Once returned, you can feed them to get crafting materials for the Perks. Their locations are marked on the maps below:

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/game/3092/guide/map1.jpg

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/game/3092/guide/map2.jpg

  1. Shockle - Northwest (NW of Zabirum Temple)
  2. Burnacle - Desert (S of Solar Array)
  3. Galeicle - Plains (E of Suvia)
  4. Icicle - Nadir (W of Anvirum Cavern)

Note: The Burnacle has a tendency to wander. Just walk the world map around the Solar Array and he'll be somewhere in that area.

Help 50 ghosts to rest at peace

When you arrive in the Scrollroads dungeon, you will immediately see a save point ahead. Turn west from here and speak to an NPC to receive the From Beyond Perk, which you will need to equip on someone. Make sure the character who has it equipped is also your on-screen character (you can switch this by hitting RB or RT), and you will now see the ghosts that haunt the world. The ghosts will spawn continuously if the Perk is active, and they always roam in groups of three. They are quite easy to kill, and doing this achievement right away will help you level for the upcoming boss fight at the end of the Scrollroads area. You will also get a handy Perk from the NPC for every 25 ghosts you kill that you should have equipped on all your characters (it guarantees a critical hit on your next attack after killing an enemy), so killing 100 ghosts to get four copies is ideal.

Ghosts will spawn in every part of the world, and you can easily get all 50 from the Desert area.

Complete all Tournaments with Gold Ranking

The tournaments in the game are available shortly after unlocking the "Sentient Support" achievement, as part of the story. There are only two of them, one in Zaber and one in Suvia. You will need to complete the one in Zaber first, as this rewards you with a token that allows you to participate in Suvia. To get a Gold ranking you will need to complete the tournament in the fewest amount of battles possible. There are five rounds to get through, and a Gold requires that you only fight five battles. So you'll need to round up every enemy that spawns and take them on at once.

The Zaber tournament is no problem. I was Level 14 at this time and got Gold on my first attempt. Suvia is another matter entirely. I'm not sure why, but the enemies in the second half of the game are much tougher than the first half. You can complete the tournament with any ranking to move the story (don't group the enemies all together), then simply return later when you've leveled up a bit to try again for Gold.

Make sure your super abilities are charged and you switch stances between battles depending on what types of enemies you're facing. Once you get Gnart's whirlwind super ability, you can wipe out the first wave in one shot and it should be charged back up by the fourth wave to do the same to them.

Defeat the Mushriga

Mushriga is an optional boss found in the Scrollroads. As you head toward the exit to progress the story, if you head West instead of East you will find this giant mushroom.

This boss battle is extremely tough, not only due to the boss' high HP, but also because every time he is attacked, he will summon a smaller mushroom enemy (up to a max of six) to fight with him. While it is possible to kill it when you first arrive in this area (around Lv11 or so), it would be extremely difficult. However, the boss is always available to fight, so simply return later when you have a stronger party with better attacks that can target all enemies on the board. Also make sure you have your super abilities charged when you enter the fight. Unleash them after he summons a full group of mushrooms to get him alone again, heal up, and repeat.

I killed the boss when I was Level 14.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/3092/120834-lo.jpg Konkylian Custodian 60

Defeat the Hollow Knight

The Hollow Knight is an optional boss found on the world map, just north of Druha Tower. I'm not sure exactly when it spawns as I never looked up that way when I first visited this location (it's probably always there), but there's no point trying to fight this boss before Level 20 anyway.

The main attacks used by this boss are all AOE elemental attacks that will hit the entire party for 2-3k each. Considering your health at Level 20 is only between 4-5k, this is not a good thing. The best way I found to tackle this boss was using Olia's super version of the Intervene skill. This will have her absorb all the damage the entire party receives onto herself. So while this will kill her in one shot, it will leave the other three at full health. Use your next move to bring her back (either use a consumable or Gnart's spell if his turn was next), and because her paired partner is still alive she will go right back into her Super stance. Use her Intervene skill again.

While she is sacrificing herself for the party, you should be laying out as many DOTs as possible. Stack up a bunch of Fire Traps with Ive and use Amon's ranged ++ attacks as well (normally I'd suggest Gouge, but bleed doesn't work). Gnart should use his super after the third AOE attack (Olia will only be able to absorb two of them), and heal the party back to full health. His Heal uses three of the five super pips, so you could either use the other two for a Regen, or if he is paired with Ive you can use two of her super traps (I did this when I killed him).

The only other thing you can do to prepare for this fight is maybe switch out as many nodes in the Talent Boards as you can to include the Resilience card, which boosts magic defense, and craft extra Perks similar to the final boss strategy in the Road Map for extra elemental protection. This will lower his AOE damage and allow you to survive a bit longer. You should also be using any of the +3000HP health items you have during this fight, and enter the fight with both pairs of characters at full health and Super meter.

Helps when he gets a game code straight from the dev before launch!

Looks like another solid guide. No missables is fantastic news. I can't wait to boot this up today, my favorite genre is so under appreciated nowadays.

Today is a victory for JPRG nation! Of course, I'm going out of town for a week so I can't really start this yet. Top of my list though.

Amen to that. All ppl want these days for RPG are action-related instead of turn-base. Why I play all the FF series 10 and under as those were my styles instead of what they are doing today.

So, for maxing all characters to 20 and bonds to 5, what kind of extra grinding time are we talking here? A couple hours? 5-10hrs?

Only a few, yeah. 3-4 maybe if you never used Pat and Taika in battle like me. If you switched them in and out a bit, could be less.

How exactly do Bond Perks work? Are they only in effect if the bond is active or can I switch bonds and retain them?

The characters have to be paired to receive the bonus. Adds a bit of strategy for which characters you use and pair together. I personally had Gnart with Ive and Olia with Amon. Gnart's whirlwind and heals are great while Ive's super traps aren't that good (except against the final boss), and Olia's super is basically useless against everyone except the Hollow Knight, so Amon always used his blaster.

What level and set up do you recommend for GobKing

Just beat him after failing a few attempts. I recommend everyone being at least level 8. I grinded the groups of mobs before him a few times to get to level 8. The first 2 groups can be fought in packs of 6, last group in 7. Should level up fast doing this.

Amon and Ive paired with at least bond 3 for the extra ammo damage and crit chance, Olia and Gnart paired. craft lots (I had 20) Healing Balm+.

Go in with your super meters full. Have Ive do her super fire trap drops and electro lances. Amon's supers are not worth it here IMO. Use fire Blast with him and Mark Target.

Olia and Gnart use the Balm+s as needed and regen. Have Gnart use super mode and regen S as needed.

Takes patience but you'll beat it.

^ Yeah I was level 8 too, and it wasn't too bad. I'm really enjoying this game, thanks for the guide Pants, but I'm dreading that second tournament gold. :p

I was dreading it as well but you can return at Level 20. Until I unlocked Gnart's whirlwind I thought it would be really hard. The first fight is against 8 beetles and you can kill them in one shot. The next two fights aren't so bad, then the fourth fight you'll have whirlwind ready again. :)

I don't understand the concern around Goblin King. I just beat him with my party at 7-7-7-5 first try and without having to change my setup at all, abilities or talent board, and no grinding.

Ranged with Amon and use Mark Target / Fire Blast

Veteran with Olia and use Healing Balm+

Have Gnart use Regen / Healing Balm+

Ive uses Electro Lance / Healing Balm+

All there is to it. My Gnart even cast Haste on the King twice when he did Confusion on him individually and Confusion on the entire party.

My first few attempts he would aoe slam everyone and mass confuse everyone. Gnart would regen the boss which would nullify any damage I was able to do. I would have to spend my whole turn healing and at the time I didn't have many balm+. A little preparation made the difference.

What does uprooting do? Scared to try it, if it gets rid of the seed or not.

Puts the seed back in your inventory. Not sure whether it then resets the seed level.

You only need to uproot 2 once you've got the other seeds anyway, so you can take out lesser forms of flowers (such as Minor Lysrose and Minor Spud plant) once you've gotten their 'evolutions' so to speak

Once you get three leaves on the plant, you need to continue to harvest and then it will mutate. This is when you get the next seed for that specific plant. You only earn new seeds (for new plant types) through the story or chests (which are marked in the guide).

You get the seed back, and when you replant it, it starts back at the beginning. But if you plant the second level of something and will be using that to make spud+ or whatever, there is really no reason to have the first plant anymore.
