Introduction:

Leo's Fortune sees you taking on the role of Leo, a small green puff ball whose fortune has gone missing. He suspects one of his relatives, so he sets out to search their land for his missing fortune. Unfortunately, their land is wrought with dangers just waiting to kill you. The gameplay is primarily a platformer with some minor puzzle elements, and like many similar games, expect to die a lot. On the plus side, the graphics are beautiful and the game just looks and feels great. On the minus side, the achievement for beating the game in hardcore is fittingly extremely hardcore, so unless you are a hardcore platform gamer, it will likely be out of reach for many people. Even so, this is still a great little gem of a game that deserves a playthrough. Let's get started with everything you need to do to unlock achievements.

Walkthrough:

There are a total of 20 levels across 5 acts. Every level has 3 stars to earn:

  1. Collect all coins in the level
  2. Beat it without dying
  3. Beat it within the par time

Thankfully, you don't need to get all three stars in a single run. This means you can play cautiously for the stars for beating the levels without dying, and then can be more reckless and speed through levels to beat the par times. The coin-related stars are pretty easy and will come pretty naturally since none of the coins is hidden. The par times also aren't too bad, but obviously if you die too much you won't finish in time, so some practice will be required. Beating the levels without dying is the toughest to do, since many levels require really good timing and mastery of the controls. With enough persistence and patient though, they are all manageable, and you'll unlock a big chunk of the achievements just for getting all of the stars on every level.

As you earn cumulative totals of stars, you'll unlock bonus levels. There are 4 to unlock, and you'll get an achievement upon unlocking each one. Each bonus level has a miscellaneous achievement associated with it. They'll each take a few attempts and some practice but aren't too bad.

In addition to the stars in each level, many levels have a hidden gold cog to collect. They're very big, but often set just enough out of the way that you might not notice them. Each one results in an achievement, so refer to each individual achievement solution for where to find each one.

Lastly, once you've gotten all stars and all cogs, you should now be pretty familiar with all of the levels and decently good at them, since you beat them all without dying. Now is the true test of your skill and patience: you have to beat the game in hardcore mode. This means you have to complete the game from start to finish without dying. If you die, you have to start all over again. It is extremely difficult, but it is doable. The relevant achievement description has more information and tips.

Conclusion

Leo's Fortune is a beautiful platformer with very fun and tight gameplay. Despite its relative difficulty, the execution really draws you in and makes it enjoyable despite dying often. While the majority of people will not be able to complete this game, it is still a great game that shouldn't be passed over just because of one very difficult achievement. Earning all of the stars is very manageable and gives quite the sense of satisfaction when you master each level. If you manage to complete hardcore mode, congratulations on a seriously well-earned completion!

106682-lo.jpgMaster of the World 100:1gs:

Get all the gold stars in the game

There are a total of 20 levels across the 5 acts, and each level has 3 stars to collect, for a total of 60 stars to obtain. The three stars in each level are obtained for doing the same three things:

  1. Collect all of the coins in the level
  2. Beat the level under the par time
  3. Beat the level without dying

Thankfully you DO NOT need to get all three stars in a single run of a level. You can get each star on its own run if you prefer (and that's recommended too). I recommend collecting all of the coins on your first playthrough while you get a feel for the level and how to progress. Then, replay the level and go for the par time. Knowing how to progress should allow you to get the par time without much issue. Now that you've played the level at least twice, you should be familiar with the more difficult parts of it. Time to play through it without dying for the third star.

Each of the types of stars is broken down below.

Coin Collection Stars

These are the easiest stars to get in the game. The coins you have to collect are all on the path that you're meant to follow. None of the coins is hidden in some out-of-the-way spot or behind something in the environment, so you don't really have to search out any of these, you just have to make sure you collect them all. Some are possible to miss, such as while falling or floating up. If you miss any, you can just kill yourself and then go for it. This should be the first star you go for on every level. Your first time playing a level, aim to collect all of the coins on it while figuring out how to complete it.

Par Time Stars

This is the next hardest type of star, and to earn them you have to complete the level in under the par time, regardless of how many times you die or how many coins you collect. So, while it doesn't matter how much you die, the more you die the more time you'll lose. So it'll be beneficial to be decently familiar with the level to minimize your deaths. The par time runs don't need to be anywhere near perfect runs. There is room for some deaths in each level as long as you don't waste time trying to figure out how to solve some of the puzzles or progress.

Zero Fatalities Stars

This is the hardest type of star, especially in the later levels. You need to complete the level from start to finish without dying. If you die in the middle of a level, you'll have to restart from the beginning and try again. Since time doesn't matter here, definitely take your time, especially with some of the more precarious sections and obstacles (which applies to the majority of Act 4 and Act 5). These stars will likely take a few attempts on each level, since the levels are just long enough that it's easy to make one mistake and screw up your zero fatalities run.

The video below shows the game being completed with three stars in every level, if you want to watch a level being completed to see how it's done. Even with watching a video, you're still going to need some practice to navigate through the trickier or more precarious parts. Expect to practice those a few times.

106692-lo.jpgMaster of the Carnival 30:1gs:

Complete more than 2.5 laps on Bonus Level A

Completing 2.5 laps on this level is likely going to seem pretty tough at first, but it really comes down to mastering the controls and maintaining momentum as you move around the course. Puffing up and sinking down at just the right time is what's critical to keeping a high speed going throughout the course. You also have to get used to when to switch from holding left to holding right, such as when you're moving left and go into a curve that tosses you off back to the right. You need to hold left the entire time you're in contact with the curve and then switch to holding right as soon as you break contact. It's also worth noting that you should try to stay in contact with the curves as long as possible to keep moving at full speed.

I have included a video below to show how it's done, but just realize it's going to take a decent amount of practice and getting used to the controls and timing. Just watching the video won't be enough. Full credit for the video to its creator.

106693-lo.jpgMaster of the Cave 30:1gs:

Complete Bonus Level B with more than 84 seconds left on the countdown timer

This bonus level requires you to make it from start to finish while collecting little timers along the way that add a second to your time. To unlock the achievement, you need to reach the end with 84 seconds or more still left. Note that you don't need to collect every single timer for this achievement, although if you miss more than 4 or so, it will be pretty tight. Thankfully they're all pretty much directly in the path that you should be following. The most important part to hitting the time for this achievement is launching off the springs so you skim along the roof curves to collect all the timers. The video below shows how it's done. Full credit to its creator.

106694-lo.jpgMaster of the Full Moon 30:1gs:

Complete more than 5 laps on Bonus Level C

Same concept as Bonus Level A here, except the course has more twists and turns. It is much shorter though. You should be pretty used to how to puff and sink at the right times to keep your speed up, but the real key to this achievement is that last section at the end of the lap. The guy makes note of it in the video too. Your first lap will be slower than the rest, but at the end of every lap you absolutely need to sink at the right times to build up a ton of speed for the first half of the next lap. The video below shows how it's done. Full credit to its creator.

106695-lo.jpgMaster of the Mines 30:1gs:

Complete Bonus Level D with 102 seconds left on the countdown timer

Exact same concept as Bonus Level B. Collect the timers on your way to the finish. The only difference here is that this level has more timers to collect, but they guide you through the level anyway. You just have to fall quickly and only float when necessary to collect the timers. Always sink fast onto the springs to shoot up faster. Like Level B, you don't have to collect all of the timers but if you miss more than 3 or so you probably won't make it. Here's a video of it being done. Full credit to its creator.

106696-lo.jpgCog of the Loopy Mines 10:1gs:

Find the secret gold cog in level 2

Right at the very end of the level, the final jump you have to make has to be high enough to reach the cog. If you don't jump high enough to reach it, jump back left over the gap and launch yourself a little higher to grab it.

106697-lo.jpgCog of the Quick Cart 20:1gs:

Find the secret gold cog in level 4

Near the end of the level, you'll ride two carts and have to dodge saws. After reaching the end of the track on the first cart, you'll have to jump over a gap to a second cart. Be ready on the second cart. When it reaches the end, you have to jump and launch yourself up and to the right to reach the cog. It's hard to miss, but just make sure you jump high enough.

106698-lo.jpgCog of the First Plunge 10:1gs:

Find the secret gold cog in level 5

Right at the beginning of the level where you learn how to boost out of the water, the cog will be visible up high on top of a ship. Drop into the water, sink to the bottom, and launch yourself up and out of the water to reach where the cog is.

106699-lo.jpgLeo the Cautious 50:1gs:

Get all the gold stars for zero fatalities in the game

Refer to the "Master of the World" achievement solution for more information.

106700-lo.jpgCog of the Room of Cogs 10:1gs:

Find the secret gold cog in level 8

Around halfway through the level, you'll come to a big room with rotating platforms and a bunch of crates you have to push to the ground. The cog is up on the far left. Climb up the rotating platforms to the top, then jump and float left all the way to the cog.

106701-lo.jpgCog of the Great Column 10:1gs:

Find the secret gold cog in level 9

At one point in the level you'll come to a big room with a white arrow pointing down to a giant column you're supposed to jump onto, while it gets smashed lower and lower. Instead of waiting for it to be smashed and lowered, immediately jump off of it to the right and float over to grab the cog. Float down and into the opening on the right after grabbing it.

106702-lo.jpgCog of the Three Ledges 10:1gs:

Find the secret gold cog in level 10

Around halfway through the level you'll come to an area with multiple hints drawn on the wall for how to corner jump. When you get to the point of making the third jump, the cog is off to the left. Jump and float to the far left to grab it.

106703-lo.jpgCog of the Tree 10:1gs:

Find the secret gold cog in level 12

Around two thirds of the way through the level you'll come to a part with three crates stacked on each other. The top two have spikes and the bottom one you have to ram so the top two don't fall onto you. The cog is up high just after them. Push the crate right onto the platform and onto the right side of it so the left side pops up. Jump up to the left and grab the cog up high in the air.

106704-lo.jpgCog of the Great Wind 10:1gs:

Find the secret gold cog in level 13

Near the beginning, after finishing up a wind section and landing on solid ground (around the 4th or 5th section), head right to another wind section, and there will be a piece of a rope bridge attached to the end of your platform blowing in the wind. Float up to the top of this wind section and the cog is up on the left. Just don't go too high or you'll die.

106705-lo.jpgCog of the Great Grindery 10:1gs:

Find the secret gold cog in level 14

Right at the beginning you'll come to a room with big rotating spike wheels, and you have to go into a straight tunnel through them, hopping from tunnel to tunnel. From the third wheel, drop straight down following the coins onto the platform. From this platform, walk off the left side and float down. The cog is directly below the platform.

106706-lo.jpgCog of the Last Gust 10:1gs:

Find the secret gold cog in level 16

Near the end of the level you'll ride some wind up narrow areas and have to launch yourself over spikes into the next narrow wind corridor. At the last one, near the top will be the exit with a white arrow telling you to float right over the spikes. Instead of going right, continue to float up and grab the cog.

106707-lo.jpgCog of the Castle 10:1gs:

Find the secret gold cog in level 17

At the beginning of the level you'll pass a bunch of castles in the background and see the cog floating high above you at the last castle. Proceed forward to the hanging platforms. Jump from the first to the second. Stay on the second just enough to pull it down a bit before jumping to the third. From the third, jump back to the left onto the longer beam holding the first two platforms. Stay on its right side to raise up the left end, then jump and float off to the left over to the cog.

106708-lo.jpgCog of the Piste 10:1gs:

Find the secret gold cog in level 18

Near the beginning of the level you'll have to jump onto a little sled and ride it. It'll ride over two gaps without you having to do anything. When it gets to the third gap, jump to launch higher and grab the cog in mid air.

106709-lo.jpgLeo the Invincible 90:1gs:

Complete the game in Hardcore mode

Hardcore is unlocked by completing the game normally once. After completing the game, on the main menu in the upper right corner you can attempt the game in hardcore mode for this achievement.

Hardcore mode tasks you with completing the game from start to finish in one sitting without dying. If you die or quit out, you have to start over again from level 1. I think it goes without saying that this is by far the hardest achievement in the game and the reason this game is a 9/10 for completion difficulty. After spending some time trying to finish each individual level without dying, you now have to finish the entire game without dying. Unfortunately there aren't any exploits or workarounds for this achievement - no copying saves, dashboarding, etc. This one purely relies on skill.

The biggest thing I can recommend is practice. After you replayed all of the levels to get the zero fatalities stars, you should have a good idea of which level gave you problems and which levels you just made stupid mistakes on. In particular, you should be very comfortable with the first two acts since those are the easiest. Do a run through each chapter in act 3 just to make sure you're comfortable with it. Acts 4 and 5 have some really dangerous parts that are really easy to die at. Couple that with the fact that you'll probably be anxious and on edge if and when you actually make it to act 4 or 5 during a hardcore run and your likelihood of choking and making a mistake during these levels is significantly higher. Practice the levels in acts 4 and 5 until you aren't worried about each obstacle anymore. Then you are ready to try tackling hardcore mode.

I have provided a video below just for completeness sake. It may help some people to see it being done, but you really just need to practice each part so you can do it consistently, especially since watching someone do it makes it look easy. Full credit for the video to its creator.
