Introduction:

Welcome to Garou: Mark of the Wolves, a head-to-head fighter game ported from the original NEOGEO arcade game to Xbox One. As far as NEOGEO games go, this is one of the easier fighters out there, but there is some luck involved in terms of who you're put up against. The achievements are par for the course for NEOGEO games. Let's get started.

Abbreviated Walkthrough:

The main question for any NEOGEO fighting game is whether there is a character and/or move you can spam to get you through the entire game. The answer for this game is, thankfully, that there is. The character you'll want to use is Tizoc, the character with an eagle head about two thirds through the character list. When you select him, you'll be shown a TOPSET meter for you to choose where the blinking bar goes. This is the most important part of this game. Move the blinking bar all the way to the left. This means that while your health is full, you can do a special attack by pressing :1lt:. This is the move you're going to spam. Each time the move connects with your opponent, you'll get 14,000 points. Spamming this move in every fight will be the quickest way to reach all of the required scores.

Original Mode is simple enough. You can change the game settings to lower the difficulty, and then use the save states to save after each successful round. You'll have to get decently far into the game, but the enemies should go down quick on the lowest difficulty. Once you hit the score limit, let yourself get beat and choose to upload your score to the online leaderboard.

Caravan Mode is even quicker and easier since the score requirement is so low. After a couple quick fights, you'll be done with this mode. There's no need to upload your score here, so you can quit back to the main menu as soon as you reach the score requirement.

Hi Score Mode is the only mode that can pose problems. The enemies you're paired against can really be a pain sometimes. The guide below has more details. After finally reaching the score requirement, let yourself get beat in the next fight and then upload your score to the online leaderboard. Once you finish this mode, that should wrap up your completion.

Conclusion:

This is one of the simpler and quicker NEOGEO fighting games out there. The spamming of one move is really simple to do, making this a good pick for even novices to the genre. The only problematic area is Hi Score Mode, but with a few attempts you should get lucky with the enemies to make it through three fights to get the final score achievement.

In ORIGINAL MODE your score will be posted to the online rankings.

After completing (either losing or beating the game) a session in Original Mode, you'll be asked if you'd like to upload your score to the online leaderboard. Choose to do so, and this achievement will unlock.

After scoring enough points in Original Mode, when your session ends (either by losing or beating the game) you'll be prompted to enter your initials to the local leaderboard. Do so, and this achievement will unlock. You'll unavoidably score enough points when going for the three achievements below.

If you're unfamiliar with NEOGEO games, the first thing you'll want to do upon starting Original Mode is pause the game, go to Game Settings, and lower the difficulty all the way. Now start the game and choose Tizoc as your character. You'll then be asked to set up his TOPSET, which is a section of your health that allows you to do special powerful moves. Move the blinking bar all the way to the left. This lets you do your special move while your health is full, meaning right from the start of the fight.

Each fight has the same strategy: use :1lt: over and over on your opponent. This move does a slightly slow drop kick, and every time you hit your opponent with it you'll get 14,000 points. With the difficulty set to its lowest, you shouldn't have any issues defeating your opponents like this. Unlike other fighting games, there isn't a bonus for beating the opponent without getting hit, so don't worry about getting hit. If you get hit enough that your health goes too low to still be able to use your special, you don't necessarily need to reload a save. As long as you got three or four hits in, and you perform better in the other fights, don't stress about it. Finish the opponent off with normal attacks, which shouldn't be difficult on the lowest difficulty. Continue on, and you'll need to fight quite a few opponents to finally reach the score requirement.

With the mention of reloading a save above, if you're unfamiliar with using save states in NEOGEO games this is how they work: at any point in Original Mode, you can pause the game and choose to Create Interrupt Save Data. This captures your exact progress and makes a save point. This can be exploited in Original Mode to ensure you do well. I recommend making a save after each successful round just to be safe, so you never risk having to start all over again.

As with Original Mode, pick Tizoc as your character for Hi Score Mode and make sure to move your TOPSET all the way to the left so you can do your special move with :1lt: right from the start of the match. The only differences with this mode are that you can't change the difficulty, and you can't make saves.

Trying to spam :1lt: in this mode is a really bad idea. Enemies are good at blocking and countering your attacks on the normal difficulty. My strategy was, if they block, keep hitting them with :1lt: until they make a mistake and it hits them. As you move across the screen with them, you can keep using your attack. Once you have your opponent against a corner though, that's where you have to be careful. They can very easily get up and counter attack you for a lot of damage if you're too close to them. My strategy was, once I knocked them down with the special in the corner, to jump up and away from them, and then use the special again from that distance. This reduced the frequency of them countering me.

Even with this strategy, there is going to be some luck that comes into play. If an opponent hits you enough so you can't do your special, you may struggle to finish them off with just regular attacks. Try to do so, because even though you won't get many points, at least you'll survive to fight on. The biggest amount of luck needed comes in terms of which opponents you get. Your first two fights will typically be relatively easy. Starting with the third fight is where things can get difficult. There are a couple opponents that are just really hard, counter often, and do tons of damage when they do. Specifically, the short guy is a massive pain, as is the opponent in the grassy area near the waterfall. Try your best to defeat them by any means necessary, but if you can't, try again and hope to get paired against someone else.

The strategy for reaching this point total in Caravan Mode is identical to that used in Hi Score Mode. You'll only have five minutes in this mode, but you only need half the score. By the end of the second fight you should easily have enough points, and be done well within the time limit. Refer to the "HI SCORE MODE 600,000 points" achievement solution for the strategy to use.
