DLC: Sam's Story

 

Abbreviated Walkthrough:

In Sam's Story, you play as Sam after the events of the main game where your aim is to try and make your way home to the US. You will have to earn your ticket home aboard a Nuclear Submarine by working for a man who you cannot be sure of, whether he is to be trusted or not. In the end, you will need to decide who to trust (though for an achievement, you need to choose a specific option, so ultimately that choice is taken from you if you want it).

 

The achievements for this DLC are mostly missable and only one of them, "The Last Hero", is earned from story progression. All other achievements will need to be consciously attempted, some being one-time events you cannot return to, some collectibles and some sustained actions throughout the story for a specific ending.

 

Your first missable achievement to be aware of is "Cinephile" but you can get this early on into the story after acquiring your own boat. See its description for details. Your next missable achievement, "Trapper", will be available to unlock once you reach the hideout of the captain. Again, see it's description for details. Those are the two that can be earned in a single area.

 

Otherwise, the other missable achievements will take most of, if not the entire, DLC to unlock. The achievement "Untouchable" requires you not to die at all during the encounters with the main monster enemy of the game on Normal difficulty or higher, while "A Man of Principle" requires you to make certain choices or perform certain actions to gain the trust of the captain so that you can attain a specific ending to the DLC, that, of course, will only unlock after completing it, if you did everything correctly.

 

Finally, "Music Lover" requires you to collect 'Harmonica Melodies' throughout the story, "Great Owl" requires you to find all of the Night Hunters' Secret Stashes throughout the game and "Lord of War" requires you to find all of the attachments for the DLC's two new guns. Organize a documentary screening in the SAM'S STORY chapter.

 

You can unlock this achievement towards the beginning of the game after you have acquired your boat and are free to traverse the map with it. After progressing forward to your objective at a tower block, to your right you will see a mansion that you need to infiltrate. In here you will find a projector showing a film to some seated soldiers. You will need to find a different reel to put into the projector, which luckily can be found in this mansion.

Inside the mansion, if you go upstairs and to the left wing you will find a small room with a bookshelf in it, here is where the replacement reel is:

Once you have the reel, go to the centre of the mansion while still upstairs to find the projector:

Once you're here, hold :1x: to eject the current film, then again to insert the new one to unlock this achievement.

Set all 5 traps in the SAM'S STORY chapter as the Captain requests.

 

You can unlock this achievement after you have accompanied the captain back to his hideout. After some story filler and a long cutscene where you and the captain have a little party, you will wake up and be able to continue on your journey. You will be at the top of a tower block and need to make your way down to the bottom to continue. In this tower block, along the way there are five areas you need to set traps in before leaving the tower block, or you cannot come back to do it, hence why it is missable.

 

They will each have a number next to them, #1-5, so keep this in mind when doing them. If you see, for example #3, but have only set one trap so far, you know you have missed the second one and you can go back up to find it. Once you see the trap with a #5 next to it, this is the final one, so be sure this is the fifth trap you set before continuing, if it isn't you will need to go back up to find any you have missed. They are on the wall's besides entry/doorways. The achievement unlocks after setting the fifth trap.

 

The actions in this achievement are also needed to contribute towards the achievement "A Man of Principle", so you will need to do it for that too.

Complete SAM'S STORY on Normal or higher difficulty without dying in Batwing encounters.

 

You will need to set the difficulty of the game to Normal before starting the DLC or else this achievement WILL NOT unlock. Do not lower the difficulty at any point, or again it WILL NOT unlock. You change the difficulty from the main menu by going into Options > Game Opttions > Difficulty. Set it to Normal here before starting a new Sam's Story game.

 

There are three Batwing encounters in the game and they are easy enough, especially if you play on Normal and no higher, but can also unexpectedly kill you if you're not careful. You will be able to heal as much as needed, though you only have five medkits at most for the first two encounters. You can also save beforehand, which is strongly recommended that you do. You can reload your save BEFORE dying to have another attempt at the Batwing encounter should you feel it's not going very well and that you may die, so having a save before it could allow you to retry/rethink your strategy before trying again. If you do die, reloading your save will not matter since the achievement will then be void. You must reload your save BEFORE dying to have another chance.

 

The first Batwing encounter is near the very beginning after meeting the captain and sliding down a fast rope, you will be trapped on a small platform with a train car in the middle, that will provide decent cover for you. Here the Batwing will rise up in the sky, then charge at you. If you deal enough damage to it, it will drop down and not charge, only it's smaller minions might bother you then, but they do comparatively little damage. There are some boxes in the open doors of the train car with ammo and medkits too, so be sure to grab them. This is the easiest of the encounters and will only take downing the Batwing a few times, before the fight ends via cutscene.

 

The second encounter is possibly the most difficult since you can be killed by a game mechanic during the fight. You will be in a scrap yard filled with old cars and the Batwing again will drop down below them, then shoot up in the sky, then charge at you. You can again nullify this charge by dealing enough damage to it to drop it from the sky. Here, incendiary rounds with the Sammy Rifle will be very useful and devastatingly effective against the Batwing. The mechanic you need to be aware of; after a short while, the Batwing will drop behind a pile of cars, then you will see a dust cloud coming from the pile. After a few moments, it will push those cars foward, making the arena a little smaller. This happens twice in the fight. If you happen to be in the path of these cars when they're knocked over, you will be instantly killed and potentially void this achievement, so you need to be very careful of this happening.

 

The third and final encounter is towards the end of the DLC and will be in a small grove surrounded by trees. Here, the Batwing will run around the outside, out of your view, then reveal itself before charging you a moment later. You can track the movement of the Batwing in the trees as you can see the trees moving as it runs through them, though it can be somewhat difficult to see, it's the only tell to know where it's coming from. As with the previous encounters, enough damage to the Batwing before it charges you will make it stumble and miss it's attack.

 

After beating all three encounters with the Batwing on at least Normal difficulty, the achievement will unlock after completing the story, not after the final encounter.

This can be done on any difficulty, with any ending, however you will want to play on Normal and make certain choices to be able to unlock both "Untouchable" and "A Man of Principle" without having to start again. See their descriptions for details.

Complete the SAM'S STORY chapter earning the Captain's full trust.

 

To unlock this achievement, you will need to perform certain actions as you play the story, all pertaining to the captain to get his trust, then at the end of the game you need to choose a certain ending. You will know you have performed an action towards this since the screen will flash as you do something, but otherwise there's no way to track your trust with the captain. There are, however, known actions to take to gain enough trust to unlock this achievement.

 

These are the actions you need to perform:

  • The first time you meet the captain, face to face you're climbing up a ladder, he will ask you to put your gun down, so hold :1right: to do so.
  • You will eventually be fighting your way through a tower block, making your way up and the captain will be the guy at the top who you find and rescue, of a fashion anyway. As you then make your way with him to the next area, he will ask for help in moving a wooden beam blocking your path, so help him with that.
  • After traveling with the captain on his boat for some time to get to his hideout, you will sit down and share a drink. At one point, he will suggest he is hungry and you can hold :1right: to offer him a can of food.
  • After the night of partying with the captain you will need to make your way down the building to progress and he will ask you to set five traps on your way out. See "Trapper" for details on this, but you must set all five before leaving the building.
  • The captain will at some point have asked you to find his fallen comrades and the opportunity to do this will be when you're in your boat after beating the second Batwing encounter. The water will be foggy and the area you need to go to will not be directly in your path. You need to work your way through the small area here finding the bodies, then at the top/end of the area you can set off an audio recording and then speak to the captain via radio, telling him what you found.
  • The final action you need to take is the choice you make to finish the story. After all is said and done you can either blow the submarine up or let it sail so you can leave for home. You MUST blow the submarine up. This will then end the story and unlock this achievement.

Find all the Night Hunters' secret stashes in the SAM'S STORY chapter.

 

There are 8 secret stashes to be found in the game all spread somewhat evenly throughout so you will need to be conscious of them while playing. You can use the fantastic video below to see where each is and when you will be able to find it. Note that you will find the guns and potentially new attachments for the two new guns required for "Lord of War" so be sure to collect any that you come across.

Collect all the upgrades for Sammy rifle and Stallion pistol in the SAM'S STORY chapter.

 

There are two new weapons introduced in Sam's Story; the Sammy rifle and Stallion pistol. They each have their own upgrades to find. They will all be found in the Night Hunters' secret stashes, however you can find them in various other places too throughout the game and are likely to find them all before having found and entered all of the secret stashes if you're exploring. Just be sure whenever you see these two guns, to hold :1b: on it to take all of the available parts into your inventory. You acquire both guns at the start in the armoury you're required to enter and you should keep hold of both and use them since they're both very useful. Periodically go into workstations when you find them and equip/unequip every attachment so that everything you have found is sure to be counted.

For the entire game or just Sam’s Story? I always look to TA first for walkthroughs.
