Introduction:
A Way Out is a cinematic, story-driven co-op exclusive adventure game from the creators of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. It is game that’s playable online or locally on the same console, but you can only experience it with a co-op partner.

Taking place in the late 1960’s/early 1970's, you play as Leo Caruso and Vincent Moretti, two convicts who reluctantly work together to break out of prison, each seeking retribution against the same person, a man named Harvey. Leo and Vincent must learn to trust each other and work together in order to survive long enough to punish the one responsible for ruining their lives. This is a captivating story that plays more like a movie than a video game. Its characters are rich and engaging, the story is immersive and the gameplay is entertaining.

A far as achievements are concerned, there is nothing story related. You can technically play the entire game without earning one achievement. But, each achievement can be earned in a single playthrough and you really don’t have to go out of your way to obtain them. If you do happen to miss one or more, there is a convenient chapter select to assist you and is available to you once you have completed that chapter.

Note: In order for both players to unlock achievements, each person has to own the game. If one person is playing from the free trial which is included with every copy of the game, that person will not unlock any achievements.

Abbreviated Walkthrough:
All 14 achievements can be unlocked in a single playthrough in about 5 hours. If you just want to enjoy the story and not worry about unlocking anything, then there is a chapter select feature so you can mop up anything you missed. You can technically play the entire game without unlocking a single achievement.

If you choose to play through only once, Maka91Productions has provided a 100% video walkthrough HERE.

There are instances where one character is needed to trigger the requirement to unlock an achievement. Even if that’s the case, all achievements unlock for both players except for one. For “Home Run”, each player needs to take a turn at bat and hit a home run.

The order the achievements should be unlocked is:

  • The Dip” (Escape: The Yard)
  • Freedom” (Escape: Prison Escape)
  • Take A Breather” (Fugitives: Breather)
  • In Sync (Fugitives: The Farmstead)
  • Take It For A Spin” (Fugitives: The Farmstead)
  • Timeless Treasure” (Fugitives: The Farmstead)
  • Home Run” (Preparation: Reunion)
  • No Cheating” (Preparation: Reunion)
  • You Started It” (Preparation: Reunion)
  • Backseat Mechanic” (Preparation: Bonds)
  • Managed Anger” (Preparation: Violent Questioning)
  • Live The Dream” (Preparation: A New Life)
  • Break From Reality” (Vengeance: Lift Off)
  • Mayday!” (Vengeance: Lift Off)

Mop Up:
If you happened to miss any of the achievements, there is a chapter select feature. For your convenience, a list of which chapter an achievement is unlocked in is written above as well as in each solution.

Conclusion:
It is not often that a game has such a compelling narrative as A Way Out does. Designed to feel like you’re watching a movie, players can embark on an emotional adventure and connect with the playable characters in ways unprecedented in video games. This is definitely one that shouldn't be missed.

There are 14 achievements with a total of 1000 points

  • You freed someone from captivity.

    (5)

This unlocks during the chapter ‘Escape: Prison Escape’.

While you are making your escape across the rooftops of the prison, you will arrive in the same place where you retrieved the chisel earlier in the game. At the other end of that small landing (opposite the ladder) is a window you need to break. Crawl through it to enter the Warden’s office.

Walk across the first room and through the door on the right, leading to a balcony. To your immediate right is a birdcage. Press to set the bird free, unlocking the achievement.

This achievement starts at [01:05:40] in Maka’s video walkthrough.

  • You exposed some infidelity.

    (5)

This unlocks during the chapter ‘Preparation: Reunion’.

When you arrive at the trailer park after the boat sequence, walk straight ahead and ignore the objectives. You will happen upon a trailer with Christmas lights on it and a woman sitting in a chair holding a baseball bat. Speak to her and she will tell you that she thinks her husband is cheating on her. After the conversation, continue along the path that lead you to this trailer and you will hear someone having fun in another trailer. Using the same character, knock on the door and a man will confront you. He’ll tell you to go away, so you deduce that this is the woman’s husband. Deciding to tell her, return to the woman. Upon telling her what you saw, she storms over to the other trailer, enters it and you hear commotion inside. Soon after, the achievement unlocks.

Note: If you’ve moved the dumpster and continued to Leo’s trailer before unlocking this, you’ve missed your opportunity and need to restart the chapter. You can also unlock both “You Started It” and “Home Run” in this same scene.

This achievement starts at [02:04:30] in Maka’s video walkthrough.

  • You played a videogame with a friend.

    (5)

This unlocks during the chapter ‘Vengeance: Lift Off’.

After Leo puts the bag on the plane, ignore the objectives and along the wall in the background you will see an arcade cabinet. After both characters walk over to it, press to interact with it to start playing a game and the achievement will unlock.

Note: If you’ve opened the hanger doors before unlocking this, you’ve missed the opportunity and need to restart the chapter. You can also unlock “Mayday!” in this same scene.

This achievement starts at [03:15:23] in Maka’s video walkthrough.

  • You almost took to the skies.

    (6)

This unlocks during the chapter ‘Vengeance: Lift Off’.

After Leo puts the bag on the plane, ignore the objectives and walk towards the back of the hanger and to the right into an office. On the far side of the office is a door which leads outside. Parked out there is a helicopter. As Leo (Vincent cannot trigger this achievement), walk up to the helicopter and enter it. Leo will start pushing buttons and the helicopter will start to lift off, freaking Leo out. When the sequence is over and Leo exits the helicopter, the achievement will unlock.

Note: If you’ve opened the hanger doors before unlocking this, you’ve missed the opportunity and need to restart the chapter. You can also unlock “Break From Reality” in this same scene.

This achievement starts at [03:16:15] in Maka’s video walkthrough.

  • You helped fix the bike.

    (5)

This unlocks during the chapter ‘Preparation: Bonds’.

When you’ve found Leo’s family’s trailer and have spoken with Linda, Leo’s son will run into the trailer. Linda suggests that he go inside and talk to him. Now, this achievement will only unlock if you give Vincent enough time to help Linda fix the motorcycle, so after you enter the trailer, you can talk to Alex, but don’t follow him to the treehouse until this achievement unlocks.

Have Vincent speak to Linda and ask her if she needs any help. When she agrees, Vincent needs to retrieve a wrench from the tool shed and bring it back. Linda will then ask you to start the motorcycle. When the motorcycle starts, rev it up a little and the achievement will unlock.

This achievement starts at [02:11:00] in Maka’s video walkthrough.

  • You are clearly good with a bat.

    (6)

If the person swinging hits the ball at least 175 feet (points), the achievement will unlock. Keep trying until it unlocks.

For both players to get this achievement, you need to switch positions.

Note: If you’ve moved the dumpster and continued to Leo’s trailer before unlocking this, you’ve missed your opportunity and need to restart the chapter. You can also unlock both “You Started It” and “No Cheating” in this same scene.

Secret achievements

  • You took a break from it all.

    (6)

This unlocks during the chapter ‘Fugitives: Breather’.

During your escape, there will be a cutscene with Harvey talking with one of his associates about Leo’s escape. When that scene is over, it will be daytime for Leo and Vincent who are walking briskly through the woods and then overlooking the landscape. When you have control of your characters, turn right and follow a path around the rocks and across a gap. On the other side of the gap will be a rock formation you can sit on. Have both characters sit down and a short cinematic will play (this is an homage to game creator’s previous game, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons). As Leo and Vincent are talking, the achievement will unlock.

This achievement starts at [01:24:20] in Maka’s video walkthrough.

  • Music was played in harmony.

    (7)

This unlocks during the chapter ‘Fugitives: The Farmstead’.

After taking care of the old couple (either subduing them or distracting them with the horses), enter the house. To the left of the staircase (and right of the solarium) is a piano and to its left is a banjo resting against the wall. Vincent needs to interact with the piano and Leo the banjo.

This is like a Dance Dance Revolution mini-game where you have to press the correct button (, or ) when it passes through the circle. You both need to correctly press the buttons about 20 times in a row and at the same time to trigger a cinematic.

When you pick up the instruments, you have the option to play at a certain difficulty. To make this easy on yourself, select ‘Easy’. Then successfully press the appropriate buttons. When both of you have 20 correct presses at the same time, a short cutscene will play with the two characters playing a song. When it’s over, the achievement will unlock.

Note: As long as you don’t complete the objectives, you have unlimited time to do this. You can also unlock both “Take It For A Spin” and “Timeless Treasure” in this same scene.

This achievement starts at [01:36:30] in Maka’s video walkthrough.

  • You linked up to get past.

    (5)

This unlocks during the chapter ‘Fugitives: The Farmstead’.

After taking care of the old couple (either subduing them or distracting them with the horses), enter the house. In the living room, next to the stairs, is a grandfather clock. With both characters standing at it, both players at the same time need to press (there will not be a prompt) to pull on the cords. You will hear something open, so turn around and walk up the stairs and you will have opened a secret door on the second landing. Walk into that secret room, open the chest in the far corner and whoever opened it will turn around a raise a sword in the air. When you drop the sword the achievement will unlock.

Note: As long as you don’t complete the objectives, you have unlimited time to do this. You can also unlock both “Take It For A Spin” and “In Sync” in this same scene.

This achievement starts at [01:37:50] in Maka’s video walkthrough.

  • Dark desires done right.

    (7)

This unlocks during the chapter ‘Preparation: Violent Questioning’.

In this sequence, you need to chase down Ray at a construction site to ask him where Harvey is. After catching up to him, you tie him to a chair and look around for ways to torture him to get him to speak. As Vincent, walk up and interact with Ray and select ‘Pull Him Back’ and he will ask for Leo’s assistance. After pushing him all the way to the ledge, Leo has a decision to make. As Leo, walk back to the table with the wallet on it and position yourself at the end of the table next to the red door. Press to lean against on the table (there will not be a prompt) and he will think about what needs to be done. After about 15 seconds, there will be a short cinematic with Leo walking towards Ray and kicking him over the side. When Ray lands, the achievement will unlock.

This achievement starts at [02:29:05] in Maka’s video walkthrough.

  • "Houston, we've had a problem."

    (6)

This unlocks during the chapter ‘Preparation: A New Life’.

After getting out of the elevator at the hospital, turn left and then turn left again and you will enter a waiting room with a nurse’s station. Before speaking with the nurse, turn the TV on in the corner and have both characters sit on the couch. Whoever is on the left will doze off after about 30 seconds and will have a dream about being on the moon (mirroring what is being shown on the TV). When you have control of your character, run towards the moon lander and the achievement will unlock along the way.

Note: If you speak to the nurse before you do this, you’ve missed your opportunity and need to restart the chapter.

This achievement starts at [02:56:00] in Maka’s video walkthrough.

  • You did what the wind couldn't.

    (5)

This unlocks during the chapter ‘Fugitives: The Farmstead’.

After taking care of the old couple (either subduing them or distracting them with the horses), at the back of the barn is a windmill. Climb up the ladder and keep tapping to manually turn the blades. When you’ve spun it enough, there will be a short cinematic before the achievement unlocks.

Note: As long as you don’t complete the objectives, you have unlimited time to do this. You can also unlock both “Timeless Treasure” and “In Sync” in this same scene.

This achievement starts at [01:38:45] in Maka’s video walkthrough.

  • Not kids anymore.

    (6)

This unlocks during the chapter ‘Preparation: Reunion’.

When you arrive at the trailer park after the boat sequence, ignore the objectives. Walk around the trailer park until you find a playground with a swing set. Have both characters sit on the seesaw and a cutscene will trigger with them debating on who sat down first. When the scene is over, the achievement will unlock.

Note: If you’ve moved the dumpster and continued to Leo’s trailer before unlocking this, you’ve missed your opportunity and need to restart the chapter. You can also unlock both “Home Run” and “No Cheating” in this same scene.

This achievement starts at [02:06:30] in Maka’s video walkthrough.

  • The Dip

    100

    You set a new record.

    (6)

This unlocks during the chapter ‘Escape: The Yard’.

After both Leo and Vincent arrive at their cells, there will be a short cinematic in the prison yard. Someone will approach Leo and tell him that someone wants to talk to him. Instead of walking to the objective, have Leo walk forward towards two men working out on the vertical bars. Talk to the older man and you will discover that the current record is 19. Leo says he can easily break that, so the older man says to prove it.

Walk up to the bars and press to begin. Keep tapping to perform more reps. As you do more, it becomes more difficult and you have to tap faster. As long as you don’t press (to cancel), you can stop tapping if you need a break. Or you can just pause the game. When you’ve reached 20 reps, you’ll stop, gloat that you didn’t even break a sweat and the achievement will unlock.

This achievement starts at [00:08:45] in Maka’s video walkthrough.
