Introduction:
Abzu is an underwater exploration game in which you are a scuba diver exploring the remains of an ancient, technologically advanced civilization. The game itself is very simple and straightforward, and your character is never in any real danger. You swim around exploring environments and encountering all sorts of sea life, from the smallest fish to the largest whale, and even a few creatures that are thought to long been extinct. There are no missable achievements; they all involve finding the collectibles and completing the game.

Abbreviated Walkthrough:
There are three kinds of collectibles in this game. First, there are meditation statues that resemble stone sharks that you can sit on and watch the sea life pass by. Second, there are hidden pools that release another species into the environment when activated. Third, there are secret shells that swirl and spin away when you get close enough. None of them are too hard to find, but since the whole game is underwater, it can be easy to lose your sense of direction and get confused. Follow the guide to find each one. The other achievements require you to interact with the environment or certain fish.

The order in which you will unlock the non-collectible achievements are as follows:

Chapter 1: “Breach
Chapter 1: “Ballet
Chapter 1: “Food Chain
Chapter 2: “Jetstream
Chapter 4: “Kraken
Chapter 7: “Connection
Chapter 7: “Leviathan
Chapter 7: “Arctic Explorer
Chapter 7: “Reflection

Refer to their respective achievement descriptions to see how to unlock them.

Mop-Up:
If you miss any of the collectibles or miscellaneous achievements, you can teleport to any of the meditation statues that you have activated. Simply pick the one closest to the area you need to explore.

Conclusion:
Abzu is a peaceful exploration game that is an easy completion. It should only take you a few hours if you follow the collectible guides. I found it to be deeply relaxing and cathartic, and there were several moments that left my jaw open. Despite never being in danger at any time, it was still frightening to be swimming next to giant underwater predators, and some of the environments were extremely beautiful and mysterious. I hope you enjoy the ride.

There are 12 achievements with a total of 1000 points

  • Breach

    50

    Leap from the water.

This can be unlocked as early as Chapter 1. All you need to do is find an area where you can see the surface and swim upward. Get enough speed with a boost and you’ll jump out of the water and unlock the achievement.

  • Ballet

    50

Perform a flip while riding a creature.

This can be unlocked as early as Chapter 1. Find an animal you can ride and press to have the animal do a roll to unlock the achievement.

  • Burst 15 fish schools in the jetstream.

This can be unlocked as early as Chapter 2. There are two jetstreams in this chapter. While swimming through them, aim for the groups of fish to burst them. This will be indicated by a special sound and effect. Hit as many as you can in both streams. Once you’ve burst 15 fish schools in total, you will unlock the achievement.

  • Witness predation while meditating.

Find a meditation statue and meditate on it. This will zoom in on a random fish in the surrounding area. Keep switching fish until you find a predator and then just wait. Eventually he’ll gobble up another fish, and the achievement will unlock.

  • Release fish from all the hidden pools.

The hidden pools release another species into the environment when activated. There are 20 hidden pools in total. All credit for the video goes to NonstopTrophies.

  • Find all the meditation statues.

The meditation statues are the large, stone sharks that you can sit on and meditate. There are 12 statues in total. All credit for the video goes to NonstopTrophies.

  • Complete the adventure.

This will unlock upon reaching the end of the game.

  • Add all secret shells to your collection.

The secret shells will spin and disappear when you activate them. There are 19 secret shells in total. All credit for the video goes to NonstopTrophies.

Secret achievements

  • Kraken

    75

Discover those that lurk in the abyss.

This can be unlocked as early as Chapter 4, but again in Chapter 7. Don’t worry, it’s not some scary, mythical sea creature. Just a giant squid (although still pretty freaky). Swim up to it and ride it to unlock the achievement.

  • Ride the Great White Shark.

This is unlocked at the beginning of Chapter 7. Swim up and hold to ride the Great White Shark to unlock the achievement. Don’t be afraid, he’s your buddy.

  • Breach the water on the back of a blue whale.

This is unlocked during Chapter 7. You will enter a huge open area with gigantic blue whales swimming about. While riding them, try and steer them towards the surface and press boost to have them breach the water, unlocking the achievement.

  • Discover the polar region.

This is unlocked during Chapter 7 in the same area as the blue whales. In the corner of the map there will be a small island of ice with penguins and a polar bear. Simply climb up onto it to unlock the achievement.
