Abzu is an underwater exploration game in which you are a scuba diver exploring the remains of an ancient, technologically advanced civilization. The game itself is very simple and straightforward, and your character is never in any real danger. You swim around exploring environments and encountering all sorts of sea life, from the smallest fish to the largest whale, and even a few creatures that are thought to long been extinct. There are no missable achievements; they all involve finding the collectibles and completing the game.
There are three kinds of collectibles in this game. First, there are meditation statues that resemble stone sharks that you can sit on and watch the sea life pass by. Second, there are hidden pools that release another species into the environment when activated. Third, there are secret shells that swirl and spin away when you get close enough. None of them are too hard to find, but since the whole game is underwater, it can be easy to lose your sense of direction and get confused. Follow the guide to find each one. The other achievements require you to interact with the environment or certain fish.
A video guide created by Maka can be found HERE. All credit for the video goes directly to him.
The order in which you will unlock the non-collectible achievements are as follows:
Chapter 1: “Breach”
Chapter 1: “Ballet”
Chapter 1: “Food Chain”
Chapter 2: “Jetstream”
Chapter 4: “Kraken”
Chapter 7: “Connection”
Chapter 7: “Leviathan”
Chapter 7: “Arctic Explorer”
Chapter 7: “Reflection”
Refer to their respective achievement descriptions to see how to unlock them.
If you miss any of the collectibles or miscellaneous achievements, you can teleport to any of the meditation statues that you have activated. Simply pick the one closest to the area you need to explore.
Abzu is a peaceful exploration game that is an easy completion. It should only take you a few hours if you follow the collectible guides. I found it to be deeply relaxing and cathartic, and there were several moments that left my jaw open. Despite never being in danger at any time, it was still frightening to be swimming next to giant underwater predators, and some of the environments were extremely beautiful and mysterious. I hope you enjoy the ride.
