Introduction:
Welcome to Real Bout Fatal Fury 2, another head-to-head fighting game in the Fatal Fury series. This game sees the return of many familiar characters in the series plus the addition of some newcomers. The achievements are the standard NEOGEO requirements of obtaining set scores in each of the three modes. Unfortunately, this fighting game is one of the more challenging ones, with no particular way to spam your way through each mode. A decent amount of skill and/or some luck will be required for this completion. Let's get started.

Step 1: Original Mode
For this mode, like all NEOGEO games, you're going to want to pause the game and go into Game Settings, increasing the time limit to the maximum and reducing the difficulty to the minimum to make this as easy as possible. You are also going to want to make continual use of the save state system. Upon starting a fight, pause and select to Create Interrupt Save Data to create a save point. At any time during the fight (if you're doing well) and especially after each round, pause and save your game. If you do poorly or even lose, quit to the title screen and then resume from your save. The character you choose isn't really important here, but I chose Franco Bash, and I recommend learning that character to use for the next two modes. Work your way through the many opponents to finally reach the last score for Original Mode. Once you reach 800,000 points, let yourself get beat and then upload your score to complete all the achievements for this mode.

Step 2: Hi Score Mode
Hi Score Mode doesn't allow you to change any game settings nor use save states, so you're going to be fighting on the standard difficulty setting without being able to save. Thankfully, with the experience you should have after Original Mode, this shouldn't be too much more difficult. I still recommend sticking with Franco Bash, and choose Cheng as your first opponent since he tends to be pretty passive. You're going to have to defeat at least 5-6 enemies to get the required score. Refer to the guide for more tips. Once you reach 400,000 points, let yourself get beat and upload your score to the online leaderboard to finish this mode.

Step 3: Caravan Mode
Caravan Mode has the same settings as Hi Score Mode except with the added stipulation that you only have five minutes to score as much as possible. In most other NEOGEO games, the time limit doesn't come into play, but here, it's going to be the biggest obstacle to finishing this mode and getting the completion. Refer to the guide for more tips. Once you finally reach 300,000 points, that should be your last achievement and will wrap up this completion.

Conclusion:
The bulk of this game is your standard NEOGEO fighting game fair, especially Original Mode. Hi Score Mode is a bit more difficult without a single move to spam, but still readily doable. Caravan Mode is where the majority of the difficulty lies, and will likely take quite a few tries to get the required score in time. Once you finally conquer Caravan Mode, the rest of this game shouldn't pose any problems.

For those new to NEOGEO games, there are two important things to take advantage of in Original Mode. The first is by pausing the game after starting a session, and selecting Game Options. Set the time limit to the maximum (99) and the difficulty to the lowest (1). The second thing is the save system. At any point during Original Mode, you can pause the game and choose Create Interrupt Save Data to create a save state exactly where you're at. This can be exploited to ensure you never lose and get good scores on each fight. If you aren't doing well or if you lose, pause the game, choose Return To Title Screen, and then choose Original Mode to be right back where you saved your game, and try again. One other thing that I did in the Game Settings was to set it to 3 rounds per fight instead of 2. The reason I did this was because the score required is so high, and the early fights are easier than the later ones. This isn't required, but I recommend doing it.

As for strategy, it's the same as that outlined in the roadmap. Choose Franco Bash as your character, since he has good reach and does good damage. Choose Cheng as your first opponent, since he's the most passive and therefore easiest to get two perfect victories against. The most reliable combination of attacks to use is to jump kick him ( in the air) and then immediately after you land, crouch and kick on the ground. This one-two combo will almost always connect with Cheng, and you'll defeat him very quickly. Every couple of successful hits, you can pause the game and create a save state, reloading if you get hit. Exploit save states to ensure you get two perfect victories on Cheng.

For the rest of the matches, use the exact same attack strategy. Don't worry about perfect victories. It's still viable on the second fight for sure, and maybe a couple others, but just progressing through the fights should get you to the 800,000 points. This will take pretty many fights, depending on how well you do. Again, if you do poorly on any fights, feel free to reload your save. It should go without saying, but you should also be saving after every round of every fight so you never lose much progress. If need be, you could even save after every successful hit during later fights, although this likely won't be necessary.

  • The score has been posted to the online rankings in the "HI SCORE MODE".

  • HI SCORE MODE 400,000 points

The strategy for Hi Score Mode is otherwise identical to that of Original Mode: choose Franco Bash as your character, and choose Cheng as your opponent. For this mode, it's in your best interest to get at least one perfect victory against Cheng. Two is obviously ideal, but I don't recommend continually restarting if you get hit. The first two or three fights aren't difficult, and as long as you stick to your jump kicks and low kicks, you shouldn't have any problems winning the fights.

The hardest part of this mode comes when you get paired against Laurence or Billy Kane; that's when you need to be very careful. One of these two opponents will show up by your fourth fight or so, and either can very quickly ruin your run. Billy Kane in particular has a flaming staff attack that does an absolutely absurd amount of damage to you. For either opponent, it's very important to stay as aggressive as possible. Jump in and attack continually. Putting distance between you and the opponent is going to get you killed. Just focus on beating them. If you can defeat Billy or Laurence, you'll have no problem getting the scores required.

  • CARAVAN MODE 300,000 points

Caravan Mode works the same as Hi Score Mode except with the addition of a 5-minute time limit. In most other NEOGEO games, this time limit rarely comes into play. Here, on the other hand, this time limit will be your worst enemy. It took me maybe 20 attempts to finish Caravan Mode, and virtually every single one of them ended with me running out of time with 250,000 - 290,000 points. It can be very frustrating to continually get so close and run out of time, but keep at it and try not to get frustrated.

I ultimately used the same strategy as the previous two modes, choosing Franco Bash and picking Cheng as my first opponent. In Caravan Mode, it is absolutely critical that you get at least one perfect victory against Cheng. Obviously two is ideal, but in my successful run I only got one. With one perfect against Cheng (assuming the other round is nearly perfect), every subsequent round should focus on being as fast as possible. Naturally you don't want to take damage, but it seems that time remaining on the clock factors pretty heavily into your score, so be as aggressive as possible.

Because of the tight time limit, if you lose a single round it's essentially a guarantee that you're not going to have enough time to reach the required score, so you might as well just restart right away. If you can get two perfect victories against Cheng, you should have around 70,000 or more after his fight. The second fight should go pretty smoothly too, as long as you stick to your jump kicks and sweeps. The third fight, which seemed to always be against Blue Mary for me, can be hit or miss. There were times where she blocked everything and made the fights take forever, and there were times where she let me absolutely destroy her. From my experience, it seemed most reliable and consistent to not only stay aggressive, but to press as late as possible on the way down in the air, and to try to time the jump kick so I'd strike her the instant she stood back up. This seemed to consistently land hits instead of her blocking. If she does block often, consider getting in close and doing a throw. Throws are unblockable, so they're a good way to do damage if she blocks often.

The fourth fight will likely be Xiachang or someone else. This can be a tough fight, and a tough one to finish quickly. Give it everything you've got, because the next fight is going to be against Billy Kane or Laurence, both of whom are very deadly and frustrating. They will block constantly, and have very hard hitting counter attacks. At least with Billy Kane, I again had great success in waiting as long as possible to press with my jump kicks. He would often attack straight forward, and then I'd kick him on the way down. I rarely connected with the low kicks though. If all went well during the rest of your fights, you hopefully will only need to win one round against Billy/Laurence to reach 300,000 points. Winning two rounds against either of them is extremely tight even on a good run, so bear that in mind.
