Introduction:
Alpha Mission II was released on NEOGEO back in 1991 by SNK, and has been ported directly to the Xbox One by our new best friends over at the bizarrely named Hamster Corporation. As with most of the other games so far released in the ACA series, this vertical scrolling shoot 'em up is a pretty fast completion, requiring little skill to finish. You only need to play each game mode once, but depending on luck and how fast you get learn the enemies patterns and game mechanics, may take few more tries.

Step 1 - Original Mode
Start up in original mode. You can change the settings to make things easier for yourself by pressing  and changing the difficulty to 1, and changing the number of players to as high as you like. You can go as high as 99, but will probably only need 20-30 max to get to the highest score needed. Play until you have all of the point achievements, getting to grips with the game as you go. Once you have them, let yourself get beat and unlock the two high score achievements. 5 achievements for 420.

Step 2 - Hi-Score Mode
In Hi-Score Mode, you have to test yourself against the computer at level 4 difficulty, with only three lives to play with. The trick to getting to a high score is to learn where the enemies come and where the powerups are, and how to use them. Concentrate on your ship and incoming bullets and ships, not necessarily what you are aiming at. For more in depth advice, see the guide. Once you have the score related achievements, let yourself get beat and upload your score for the related achievement. 4 achievements for 340.

Step 3 - Caravan Mode
Rinse and repeat what you did in step 2, this time in Caravan mode. As well as not being able to change the difficulty and having only three lives, you have only 5 minutes to get the high scores. However, this should be plenty of time in this game, using the same tactics as Hi Score mode. Once you have the score related achievements, you can simply quit out. 3 achievements for 240

Conclusion:
This is a great old school vertical scrolling shooter, which is a classic "one more try" type of game. With a little practice, the achievements should come pretty fast. If you don't mind the price point for not much bang for your buck, and appreciate an easy 1000, then this game comes highly recommended!

  • HI SCORE MODE 150,000 points.

  • HI SCORE MODE 200,000 points.

HI SCORE MODE requires you to hit these points totals on difficulty level 4 with only three lives. This can seem quite daunting but once you get the hang of it and learn where the enemies and powerups are, it isn't so bad. Concentrate on dodging bullets and ships primarily, and pick up powerups when and where you can.

You need to be constantly firing your weapon with  (tap, not hold, for faster firing) and shoot everything you see. Pick up as many of the letters you see falling towards you, L upgrades your lasers, M your missiles, and S your speed. K lets you keep your powerups if you die. The main thing you need to be looking for are the transformation upgrades. You need to pick up three of the same powerup in a row to get the transformation, if you pick up a different one it will reset. You can see what transformation you are working on at the top of the screen.

Try and save these transformations (used by pressing , then select with ) for as late as you can, as you will need to get through half of the second level which can get very crazy. When transformed, you can take a bunch of hits and depending on which transformation it is; will have stupidly OP weapons.

    Level 1
Play through the first part of the level, picking up as many powerups as possible; if you play well you will have all of your lives left and two or maybe three transformations saved.

    Mid Boss
This guy will shoot bullets down towards you, but the direction will never change. Simply stay between the two bullets and let him have it

The section after the mid boss can get very crazy, so you may want to use a transformation here, depending on how brave you feel.

    Level 1 boss
This guy isn't too hard, just is a bit of a bullet sponge. If you haven't died up to this point, you can beat him pretty easily, but may want to use a transformation if you are laser/missile under powered. Target one of his arms at a time, they should go down pretty quickly, then concentrate on the body. He moves around in circles, just stay away from him when he goes near the bottom of the screen as he can drop a load of green lasers that can be difficult to dodge. Hit him hard, hit him fast and avoid his projectiles. You should have around 100k once you beat the level.

    Level 2
This level starts off really slowly, a few ships here and there, mostly dropping powerups for you. Then, a HUGE ship will form in front of you, with a bunch of turrets that can kill you easily if you aren't careful. If you have transformations left, use them here, it will make your life much easier. Each large section of the ship you destroy will net you at least 10k, so just shoot the hell out of it. You should hit 200k before the halfway stage of this level.

  • CARAVAN MODE 40,000 points.
