Introduction:
Welcome to ACA NEOGEO League Bowling, another installment to the NEOGEO series by Hamster Corporation. This is an old school take on bowling that allows you to try your hand at being a pro bowler. Like every other NEOGEO on the Xbox One and Windows 10 system, you will need to obtain a score in all three modes, while uploading to the online leaderboards in Original and Hi Score Mode. All three modes require the same exact score in each mode, 2,000 points. While this game could be completed in mere minutes if you know what you are doing, I’d set aside about an hour and a half or more for this completion.

Abbreviated Walkthrough:
To begin, you need to select Original Mode from the main menu. Unlike other NEOGEO games, you will not be messing with the settings before starting. They can make the Original Mode achievements easier, you will still need to do the same thing without save states in Hi Score and Caravan Mode. Once you get to the menu, you will also need to pick Flash Mode, otherwise you will not be able to score the needed points. Chose your ball weight and handedness, which will start up a ten frame game. Once you’re loaded in, you’ll need to take notes of the surroundings in order to know how to start scoring high. Please see my description for "Score 2,000 Points" for a detailed guide. Once you get the needed amount of points, tap to enter your initials, then upload your score to the online leaderboards with .

You will then need to repeat the same steps for Hi Score and Caravan Mode, scoring 2,000 points in each. Make sure you never pause the game in Hi Score and Caravan Mode, as there still is no way to un-pause in these modes, leading to a reset. A game takes about four minutes so make sure you can do that uninterrupted. Your bowler will automatically throw the ball after a certain amount of time, which will most likely end the run.

Conclusion:
Continue playing games until you have the hang of it, and scoring 2,000 points won’t be too bad. Work on timing especially, as you can luck your way into strikes and non-split spares are usually easy to pick up. I found it to be one of the more fun NEOGEO games, simply because I absolutely hate fighting games.

Load up Original Mode and press to advance the screen. Make sure to select Flash Mode, as the other modes do not offer a way to score 2,000 points. After that, you can select your bowler’s preferences. It’s a good idea to choose a heavy ball, so I always go with 15. Left or right-handed doesn’t matter, just keep in mind which side you’ll be launching from. When you go to approach, you will see a score bar that is slowly moving left and right. It looks like this:

    100 | 200 | 300 | 200 | 100

This bar indicates what score will be added to your total if you strike (knock down all 10 pins on the first shot). If you leave some pins, the score bar on the second shot will be similar:

    50 | 100 | 200 | 100 | 50

This will be your score if you pick up the spare (knock down all remaining pins on the second shot). If you fail to strike or spare, you will only get the pin-down count added to your score. Now actually scoring can be frustrating at first. It took me a good 20 minutes to get used to everything before I started competing for a good score. First and foremost, you need to learn the scoring timing. Because the ticker keeps moving after your shoot, you’ll need to plan ahead. You’ll always want to start selecting your power when the ticker is directly to the left or right of the max score, and the ticker is heading that direction. For example, if the ticker is moving leftwards, start selecting power when the ticker lands one spot left of the max score (200 for strikes, 100 for spares). This way, it will come back around to the max score once the ball hits the pins. Same goes for the right side if the ticker is moving rightwards. I recommend playing one or two games where you solely focus on timing, so that it becomes muscle memory for these achievements.

For power, you should be throwing it near max speed. I always tried to aim for a bit short of max speed, because throwing it really fast never seemed to strike for me. Once you’ve selected power, tried to select the marker once it’s as close to center as possible. Lastly, your character will start his approach to throw the ball. During this time, you can move your character left or right. This is extremely useful if you want to adjust your shot. If I shot dead center, I always moved just a tad bit to the left (I was right-handed in the game). Just like in real life, hitting dead center is never good and can lead to splits (spares that are difficult to pick up). Keep in mind that for every open frame (non-strike or non-spare), you will need at least two strikes to make up for it if you want a shot at 2,000 points. If you get too many open frames, or miss the maximum point value too much, it may be a good idea to restart.

Lastly, in Original Mode, you can take advantage of the save feature once you start figuring out how to strike/spare. By pressing , you can create a save every time you have a good frame. If you mess up, you can then press to quit out to the main menu (not reload the game!) and it will put you back into Original Mode where you saved when you select it. This will help you out in Original Mode, but cannot be abused in Hi Score Mode or Caravan Mode.Luck plays a big factor here as well, as sometimes I would throw a perfect straight ball only for it to deviate left/right. Keep at it until you can string together a few good frames. Always go for the spare and max points, because even without a strike, 10 spares is 2,000 points!
