Introduction:
Magician Lord was released on NEOGEO back in 1990 by Alpha Denshi, and has been ported directly to the Xbox One by our new best friends over at the bizarrely named Hamster Corporation. This side scroller sees you jump, shoot and climb through levels defeating enemies and collecting treasure. Being one of the launch titles, the game is pretty poor and the enemies get really annoying and cheap. You only need to play each game mode once, but will most likely may take few more tries.

Step 1 - Original Mode
Start up in original mode, and change the difficulty to 1 and change players up to the max, which is 9. You have to get 150,000 points in this mode, which is actually quite far in the game, so you may need to abuse the save state system. When you get to a point you are happy with, press to bring up options and hit “Create Interrupt Save Data”. If you die, or are not happy with your progress, return to the title screen and go back into Original mode to carry on from where you saved. Continue playing until you have the required points.

In this game, due to the points needed and the fact that if you continue you start on zero points, Original mode is much harder than the other two modes to get achievements in, so you may want to do Hi-Score or Caravan mode first.

Once you have them, let yourself run out of lives and unlock the two high score achievements. 5 achievements for 420.

Step 2 - Hi-Score Mode
Hi-Score mode has you playing on default settings, which is difficulty level 4. Fortunately, you only need to get to 30k points, which is basically finishing the first level and part of the second, so it isn’t too bad. Once you have the score related achievements, let yourself get beat and upload your score for the related achievement. 4 achievements for 340.

Step 3 - Caravan Mode
Rinse and repeat what you did in step 3, this time in Caravan mode. As well as not being able to change the difficulty, you have only 5 minutes to get the high scores. However, this should be plenty of time in this game. You only need to beat the first level, which should take under three minutes. Once you have the score related achievements, you can simply quit out. 3 achievements for 240.

Conclusion:
Magician Lord isn’t the best of games, and the achievements in Original mode make it tougher (or annoying if you abuse save states) completions in the NeoGeo collection. If you don't mind the price point for not much bang for your buck, and appreciate an easy 800-ish, then this game comes highly recommended!

You only really get decent points from chests and from completing levels; the general enemies only give you minimal points. For this reason, you need to get any chests you can, and keep your powerups to make beating enemies and bosses much easier.

  • The score has been posted to the online rankings in the "HI SCORE MODE".

Play the game on Hi-Score mode, with any settings, and set a high score. When you get to the game over screen, as long as you get on the high score board, you will get this. You will pop this if you can get “HI SCORE MODE 10,000 points,” but can probably get it with less. The game will ask you if you want to upload your high score. Press and your achievement will pop.

  • The score won 30,000 points.(HI SCORE MODE)

To get over 30,000 points in Hi Score mode, you will need to beat the first level (giving you 23k points), and pick up some treasure from the second.

The first level is pretty easy, with many of the enemies not even firing projectiles at you. Play through, making your way to the first boss. Ensure to keep the upgrade you get once inside the room, as this will make the boss much easier. The boss is in two parts; first you have to fight a guy, who is pretty easy when you know how. Let him walk right up to you, and he will pause for a small time before attacking. When he stops, back off and fire at him, he will jump backwards and you should land a few bows. Walk forward a bit and repeat until he is dead. You will be then beamed up to a second part of the boss fight.

This part has you on a platform firing at a weird head monster in the wall. Dodge his projectiles by ducking, and watch out for the spikes coming from the ceiling, while firing at him constantly. If you still have your powerup, he will go down pretty fast, moving you to the second level.

Level 2 starts will loads of spiked balls coming from above. Move forward every time a ball goes up, firing forward to get rid of the flying enemies. Take out the next few enemies and climb the ladders, shooting upwards to get rid of as many of the next set of enemies that you can. Once at the top, move to the left and up the ladders towards the door. Go through the door, and walk to the left, dropping off the side. Stay to the right when dropping down, but when you go past a spike in the middle, go to the right. When at the bottom, walk to the right and you will see a bunch of chests. Getting the treasure in here will put you well over 30k.

A video of a full run of the game can be found in the description for “Score 150,000 points.”
