Introduction:
Welcome to Age of Empires II Definitive Edition, one of the most highly rated and influential strategy games of all time. If you like strategy games it definitely should be part of your collection. That being said it is likely to take a very long time for you to obtain all the achievements in the base game, and even more for the added new expansions. It's a credit to just how good the game is that the player base is still so large and new expansions are still being released over 20 years after the game's original launch.

Abbreviated Walkthrough:
Your first step should be the campaigns - all of them need completing and most have at least one or two miscellaneous achievements tied to a specific mission. Make sure you check the guide for each campaign so you don't miss out and end up having to replay missions. If you've never played the game before definitely start with the William Wallace Tutorial Campaign as it will get you used to all the controls, etc., and teach you a good deal about the game.

The campaigns can all be completed on the easiest difficulty with the exception of one mission required for Roar like a Lion (20G) and is where a majority of the time playing the game will be spent. Each one could take you around five hours, perhaps longer, and there are 26 in total.

Multiplayer/Skirmish:
Once you have completed the campaigns you should move on to playing skirmish matches to mop up miscellaneous achievements you may have left to obtain such as the win with a specific civilization ones for the Age of Empires (5G) achievement and beat an Extreme AI for Prominent Player (20G).

There is only one multiplayer achievement in the game but it isn't easy: Masterpiece (10G) requires you to beat three other people by yourself. It's recommended that you get a group together for this one.

Mop-Up:
By now you should have most if not all the achievements. Be sure to check the guide for specific ones you're missing. This may involve replaying campaign missions or be easily completable in custom skirmish games.

Conclusion:
A great game and one that's highly recommended, but be warned that cheats disable achievements. As a result, the full completion of the base game is likely to take considerable time, with the additional expansions only adding to that. Most of the achievements are relatively straightforward; however, there are a handfull of campaign ones that will challenege even the best of Age of Empires players.

  • Gather 20 sheep in a Random Map game.

Start a random map game against a minimum of five other players, on wonder race, post imperial age start, infinite resources, easiest difficulty and map full visible.

Once it starts check nearby to your town centre to ensure you have four sheep nearby. The other players will just build a wonder. Instead of building the wonder send out your scout and villagers to collect all the sheep on the map.
  • Wonders can only be built in the imperial age and cost 1000 Wood, Stone and Gold to build as well as a long time or many villagers, this will come naturally in the campaign but to obtain this quickly follow the method described in Prominent Player (20G)
  • Convert an enemy Monk.

In order to convert an enemy monk you will need to be playing as a civilisation that can research the 'Atonement' technology. Then you must use your monk to convert an enemy monk. An easy time to obtain this is during level 3 of the Saladin campaign. The relic that must be captured is walled in and has 3 monks in this area who cannot escape so you can convert one of those.
  • Kill 20 Villagers with Militia in the Dark Age.

Start a random map game with 7 easiest enemy AI and infinite resources. Set the max age to dark age, then simply build a barracks and lots of Militia and send them out to kill the enemy villagers.
  • Scale an enemy wall using a Siege Tower.

Siege towers as the name suggests can be built at a siege workshop in the castle age. Once you have built one you will need to garrison some units inside (e.g. man at arms, etc.) then take it to an enemy wall and unload them on the other side. A good place to do this in the campaign is the sixth level of the William Wallace Campaign.
  • Complete the William Wallace Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

William Wallace is the learning campaign and as such is quite easy. It consists of six levels that mostly just get you used to playing the game. Complete all six and the achievement is yours. Some of the miscellaneous achievements can easily be unlocked during this campaign.
  • Complete the Joan of Arc Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Joan of Arc was the second campaign of the original Age of Empires 2 and the difficulty is somewhat greater than that of the William Wallace campaign. There are six levels in total and it is recommended that you save periodically as you go through each mission as some can take quite some time. Upon completing all six levels the achievement will unlock.

    Some tips for the missions:

    • Level 2 - you can actually take you cavalry to Burgundys base in the east at the start and take them out as they don't have much military
    • Level 3 - Cross the river as far south as possible then build your base, you will want to quickly attack Fastolfs Army who are in the far east of the map with your main army.
    • Level 4 - Focus on the town centres, each enemy will be defeated once the town centre is destroyed.
    • Level 5 - Don't waste time destroying every building, Once you cross the river, head northeast and break through the wall there rather than the gates and you can avoid a battle.
    • Level 6 - Dont destory the purple walls at the start, just kill their men to capture the base to use as your own.
  • Complete the Genghis Khan Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Genghis Khan was the fourth Campaign of the original Age of Empires 2 and consists of six levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

The following level specific achievements can also be unlocked during this campaign. See their achievement solutions for more details.
Some tips for the other missions:

    • Level 4 - You only have about 13 min before the Persians turn on you anyway, make sure you kill the shah in this time otherwise they will be much stronger
      • You could also use this time to quickly build a castle in there base, with some surrounding walls, if you can defend it this will kill most of there troops, a good place to build it is near there first castle.
      • You only have to destroy the Persians Castles, Wonder and Town centre for them to resign.
    • Level 5 - You don't have to defeat any enemies you can just put 1 troop near their flag, however defeating the Polish and Germans by destroying their castle and town centre will make the last battle much easier as you can then research spies for only 200 gold
  • Complete the Saladin Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Saladin was the third Campaign of the original Age of Empires 2 and consists of six levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

The following level specific achievement can be unlocked on the sixth and final mission, Offense Is the Best Defense (10G). See its guide for more details.

Some tips for the other missions:

    • Level 3 - Can be completed in under 10 minutes via this method.
    • Level 4 - There is only one tower in the city, the rest can be attacked from outside the walls so don't waste time breaking in trying to destroy everything.
    • Level 5 - After a short while Tiberias will offer to ally with you if you send them Gold. Ascalon in the south will build a wonder but not train additional troops therefore are quite easy to kill. This could be a good time to attain Final Countdown (20G). See its guide for more details.
  • Complete the Barbarossa Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Barbarossa was the fifth Campaign of the original Age of Empires 2 and consists of six levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

The following level specific achievements can also be unlocked during this campaign. See their achievements for more details.
Some tips for the other missions:

    • 2nd Level - Henry The Lion will turn on you, build some trade carts to trade with your other allies then build some Mangonels and have them attack ground on Henry's buildings whilst he is an ally, thereby destroying them.
    • 4th Level - Henry the lion will once again turn on you so follow the same tactic as in mission 2
    • 5th Level - Keep your onagers on no attack otherwise they can kill half of your own men, Whilst it can be ignored, it is recommended you brake into Constantinople then take a couple of cavalry and station them near the wonder, this will give you a much bigger navy with which to cross the sea.
    • 6th Level - This mission can be completed in less than 10 minutes by following a method similar to the one below.
  • Complete the Attila the Hun Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Attila the Hun was the first Campaign of "The Conquerors" expansion to Age of Empires 2 and consists of six levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

The following level specific achievements can also be unlocked during this campaign. See their achievements for more details.
Some tips for the other missions:

    • 2nd Level - Quite simple, just raid all the bases then build your army and go on the attack, there are only 2 entrances to the roman empire so you could wall them in.
    • 3rd Level - Don't be afraid to spend some gold, avoid attacking Constantinople head on, instead build a small navy and attack the docs, you could even build transport ships and land near the wonder to quickly destroy it.
    • 4th Level - Burgundy will offer to ally themselves with you early in in exchange for some gold, and building a castle near there base, you can try to wall off the area to the west of Orleans and place a couple of castles here, this will deal with most of the roman empire when they arrive.
  • Complete the El Cid Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

El Cid was the second Campaign of "The Conquerors" expansion to Age of Empires 2 and consists of six levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

During the first mission the achievement The Missionary (10G)  can be unlocked.

Some tips for the other missions:

    • Level 2 - Quite easy, just use battering rams to get through the enemy defences. All the stone is to the far east of the map.
    • Level 3 - Again quite easy, you can build your base to the north of Motamids then just quickly build up and attack them.
    • Level 4 - Your base is fairly easy to defend but a lack of resources is the hardship on this level, just build a large army and focus on taking out the docks, convert the mosque and put a monk there will allow you to research all monastery techs without paying for them.
    • Level 5 - Once you reach Denia, quickly take your villagers north and build a wall straight in front of Berenguer's gate, this will mean that the wonder never starts being built and Berenguer's main base is never activated. Then you will wish to destroy Denia's gate by changing them to neutral and go forward and capture valancia. Because Berenguer doesn't use his main base you are now free to upgrade at your own pace, build some trebuchets then attack his main base in the far north, research spies it should be cheap.
    • Level 6 - Take your initial army and attack the Black Guard Army bases to the north and northwest immediately. They don't have murder holes this early so their castle should be easy to destroy and will mean you don't have to worry about being attacked from one side.
  • Complete the Montezuma Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Montezuma was the third Campaign of "The Conquerors" expansion to Age of Empires 2 and consists of six levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

During the third mission the achievement Hot & Spicy (20G)  can be unlocked.

Some tips for the other missions:

    • 1st Level - Don't capture a monastery until you can defend it. All of them can be walled in easily though.
    • 2nd Level - Build you base southwest of Texcoco. Both of your allies will turn on you once you kill the 4 town centres. It's recommended you build a castle or two in each of their bases. Also you can destroy their buildings whilst they are still allies using attack ground with Mangonels.
    • 4th Level - Can be complete in less than 5min, just get your army from the south then hug the lake with them heading towards the centre, you can avoid the group of jaguar warrior and the castle, then just take your army to the wonder whilst it has no health and destroy it.
    • 5th Level - Capture the spare units they'll be useful, make sure you take some villagers over to the other side of the lake to find gold and stone.
    • 6th Level - As soon as the game starts take a ship to the north to find 3 cannon galleons, you can then use them to quickly destroy the base for the Spanish army (north west of your base) meaning it is much easier to defend.
  • Complete all Historical Battles.

*Story related and can't be missed

Historical Battles are different to all other campaigns They are 16 standalone missions that can be completed in any order; some are harder than others.

The following level specific achievements can also be unlocked during this campaign. See their achievements for more details.

  • Complete the Alaric Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Alaric was the first Campaign of "The Forgotten" expansion to Age of Empires 2 but has been extensively reworked and now consists of five levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

The following level specific achievements can also be unlocked during this campaign. See their achievements for more details.
The first and third missions are straightforward some tips for the final mission:

    • Sarus your strongest enemy starts in the middle of the map, it is recommended you attack him early on, if you destroy his main castle the hero unit will be available, kill him and he will resign.
    • The western roman empire will attack once you build the first castle, you can destroy them first however, they have a base located in the south west
    • Destroy the enemy town before building the castle, once one is built the enemies will try and destroy it and it can be quite hard/costly to defend.
  • Complete the Bari Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Bari was the second Campaign of "The Forgotten" expansion to Age of Empires 2 and consists of five levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

There are no miscellaneous achievements in this campaign so you can just concentrate on completing the levels. The first and third levels are straightforward. Some tips for the others are:

    • 2nd level - Once you reach a town and take over it, aim to build a castle as quickly as possible to help you defend it.
    • 4th Level - you cant build additional castles but you can build walls, and towers around the castle to defend it, get the upgrades for these and stack with crossbowmen with some cavalry to attack rams. Try to complete the secondary objectives if you can.
    • 5th Level - Take out the light blue buildings in each base, this will prevent them from attacking later. as soon as you get buildings build a monk, use him to heal your men so you don't need to build additional. There are relics located near the mills to the east and southwest gather these early.
  • Complete the Dracula Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Dracula was the third Campaign of "The Forgotten" expansion to Age of Empires 2 and consists of five levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

The Fire with Fire (10G) achievement can be unlocked during the Final mission of this campaign.

The first and second missions are straightforward. Some tips for the others missions:

    • 3rd level - Try and boom your economy then build a quick army and go on the attack against the smaller villages, usually taking out the town centre and castle (if they have one) is enough for them to resign.
    • 4th Level - Build up your armies at each base, if you don't plan on converting your ally's villagers its worth sending a handful of troops to there western and southern base to help defend them, they will then give you the resources you need. There's a relic north of the western ally's base and one later in the mission on the opposite side of the river when the extra troops arrive. You can also go on the attack if you have a large enough army, onagers are good at taking down enemy buildings but make sure you don't hit your own support troops with them whilst doing so, light blue has base in the north that is easy to take care of.
  • Complete the Pachacuti Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Pachacuti is a new Campaign replacing El Dorado of "The Forgotten" expansion to Age of Empires 2 and consists of five levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

During the second mission you can unlock the Pitched Battle (10G)  achievement.

Some tips for the other missions are:

    • 1st Level - Ally with Orange as soon as you can, they are a good distraction, there is also a small purple base south of your starting base, taking this out even though it isn't an objective will make it much easier to defend your town.
    • 3rd Level - whilst you can train villagers, you can capture them and create a small town to provide resources to upgrade your troops and build new ones. Destroying enemy buildings will also give you extra resources.
    • 4th Level - The enemy in the centre of the map only needs his hero to be killed for him to resign, your 2 armies cant meet until this base is destroyed, no matter who you chose to kill either green or blue they only need there town centre to be destroyed for them to also resign.
    • 5th Level - Set the greens to neutral before attacking them so you don't kill more than you need to, ideally just any troops that get in your way and the 4 leaders, once they are dead you will gain control of the base and remaining men. Completing the secondary objectives will make assaulting blue much easier.
  • Complete the Prithviraj Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Prithviraj is the fourth Campaign of "The Forgotten" expansion to Age of Empires 2 and consists of five levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

Some tips for the missions are:

    • 1st Level - At the start there is a hero monk just south of the eastern base, you can get him so that you don't lose any any troops taking the base, you can then also take the 2nd base.
    • 2nd Level - Once you gain your base you'll want a few troops to defend it, but you'll probably also want to wall off what you can as your base is very exposed., killing the enemy leaders will make them ally with you so don't waste time killing buildings you don't need to.
    • 3rd Level - Quite easy but you'll have to keep moving forward, keep a look out for extra troops / villagers you can capture you'll need to reach the end of the level before the timer expires.
    • 4th Level - This is all about the rush, your economy is protected by the river so you only have to defend your military buildings, build some trebuchets and only take out the buildings you need too, most of the monastery's can be attacked from outsides the cities with well placed trebuchets so scout the map first
    • 5th Level - Is actually relatively easy, just make sure you convert the Raja's so as to gain there bases, villagers and men then build up a small army with some siege units to kill the main enemies., the best one to convert at the start would either be the one in the west with he castle (as this is hard to take later on) or the one in the north, the one to the north west can be converted from the hill above the town.
  • Complete the Sforza Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Sforza is the final Campaign  of "The Forgotten" expansion to Age of Empires 2 and consists of five levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

Some tips for the missions are:

    • 1st Level - Ignore the yellow and oranges, they don't really pose any threat, after escaping the initial base just build up and army and go the attack. Secondary objectives can earn you more resources.
    • 2nd Level - Try to leave as many men and buildings of the purple, blue and green alive as you will get them all if you garrison the relic, purple can be captured using the transport ship and dropping the monk next to the monastery. There are lots of free men in the south of the map.
    • 3rd Level - There's a relic to the north. Whilst there isn't much stone you can wall off the small passes and entrances to your base quite easily making it much easier to defend, then just build your army and work your way around the lake.
    • 4th Level - There are three relics on the river, use a transport ship and a monk to capture easily, the first is at the north end, second on an island in the middle and the third at the south. The latter two are easier to capture once you kill the greens. Boom your economy and fortify your island before you destroy the barricade, a couple of castles on the shore should do. You only have to destroy the enemy castles for them to resign.
    • 5th Level - Consider building walls around the entrance to the blue base, he will turn on you once you defeat the greens so you'll have walled him in making him an easy target.
  • Complete the Francisco de Almeida Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Francisco de Almeida is the first Campaign of "The African Kingdoms" expansion to Age of Empires 2 and consists of five levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

The Friends, Countrymen, Lend Me Your Ears (20G) achievement can be unlocked during the start of the fifth mission of this campaign.

Some tips for the other missions are:

    • 1st Level - Retreat across the bridge at the start to lure the enemies into a choke point to minimise your losses, from there explore the map taking over as many red's men as possible then attack yellow bases. once you defeat yellows, you will gain a base, take the remainder of your army there to defend it, build up your economy and small army then go on the attack.
    • 2nd Level - At the start, lure the attacking ships into the castle with your own ships, on the north shore quickly build a wall to defend from the greens. Take your troops to the far east then work your way south killing yellow bases to prevent them attacking you, if you put some troops in red's base using a transport ship he will go on the attack against your enemy leaving you free to build up your economy and base, cannon galleons are a good bet as red will turn on you once you defeat green so you could take your remaining ships and just quickly destroy his castle.
    • 3rd Level - This could be a hard mission but can be done cheaply, at the start take your ships and explore the ocean to the south east until you find the transport ship with the bombard cannon, then sail northeast to Mombasa, land your bombard cannon and have it attack ground on the yellow wonder until it is destroyed, reload your ships and then land on the opposite shore to the red dock, take a couple of troops and your bombard cannon round the outside of red base until you can attack ground on the edge of their castle. once it is destroyed the mission will complete.
    • 4th Level - Defend your base from the initial attack, its worth converting a couple of war elephants. Then rebuild the gate and also build a town centre so you can replenish lost villagers though you cant build much of an economy. use your bombard cannon to take out any buildings from inside your walls. Once you get the objective to destroy the enemy cannon galleon, build a couple of demo ships and take your navy to attack there ships, lure there main navy away then send the demo ships to the cannon galleon. Thereafter it is worth converting the dragon ship when you get chance as this will give you a hero who gives you twice as much gold per building destroyed, keep building your army and attacking. once you have more space you can build a Fetoria or two to help with resources.
    • 5th Level - Before converting Afonso, build up your base and economy, this will allow you to quickly build the army you need once everyone else turns on you. Once converted you will need to destroy Diu's wonder, this is quite easy as you are given cannon galleons, then you will want to go on the attack. a mixture of cannon galleons /ships to attack by sea and a land army should suffice.
  • Complete the Sundjata Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Sundjata was the second Campaign of "The African Kingdoms" expansion to Age of Empires 2 but has been extensively reworked and now consists of five levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

The following level specific achievements can also be unlocked during this campaign. See their achievements for more details.

Some tips for the missions are:

    • 1st Level - Is quite easy, don't bother with attacking orange, just focus on defending your base once you have it, which is quite easy if you build gates at all the entrances. Build an army then attack red.
    • 2nd Level - Build your base and economy quickly, to defend your blue ally in the short term, build some gates at his base entrances as the enemy rarely attack with enough force to do damage and maybe station some cavalry nearby. When taking enemy bases you only need to get the relic cart to the relevant location for them to resign.
    • 3rd Level - At the start avoid the enemy bases where possible, travel past the yellow base in the south east as they will prove useful later, once you get your small base, work your way round the outside of the map capturing supplies, don't capture the villagers until later as once you do green's will become active. a good place to build your base once you have the villagers is near the yellow traders in the south east. once you have a large enough army the best place to attack green is near there southern market, if you break the wall down and win the skirmish against there army, you can take cavalry and just rush the markets ignoring everything else to win the mission.
    • 4th Level - You can try and defend the grey docks for wood but it's not entirely necessary, boom your economy then make allies with green and yellow asap, green's have a good amount of wood in their base, and you need to rescue their princess for With the Help of My Sisters (10G) .  If going for that achievement it is recommended you save first as it will require you to sacrifice most of your economy due to population restraints, then reload or use the army to go on the attack.
  • Complete the Tariq ibn Ziyad Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Tariq ibn Ziyad is the third Campaign of "The African Kingdoms" expansion to Age of Empires 2 and consists of five levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

There are no mission specific achievements in this and it is quite easy so play through your own way.

Some tips for the missions are:

    • 1st Level - At start take your full army west and attack Roderic's army, if you kill Roderick his men will lose HP making it an easier battle, then build your base near where you started, orange will provide you with troops, you'll just need some siege to get through he walls/fortifications to purples base in the north.
    • 2nd Level - Once you take your base, build your economy quickly, you can place gates at all the entrances to shore up your defences, you should have a reasonable sized army from your alley along with trebuchets. take it and just work your way round the map killing enemies, staring in the south and moving clockwise round works. If any enemy starts building a wonder focus on them.
    • 3rd Level - Your bases are relatively easy to defend, build your economy, advance to the imperial age and build some trebuchets, then take your southern army west and break through the red bases so your armies can meet, there after you can just go on the attack against the main enemies, your allies will provide you with troops occasionally which can help.
    • 4th Level - Keep your trade cart and hero to the back and move up with them once your main army has secured an area. you can either go east around the outside of the map or west around the outside. the best route is to actually start going east until you find your allies town to get the upgrades, then double back and head clockwise round the outside of the map instead, as then you can find the other ally base later on and the enemies seem weaker.
    • 5th Level - Again quite easy, attack the villages at the beginning but retreat after destroying the monastery at each, the southern area is a good place to build a base once you can, the enemies have no villagers so any buildings you destroy wont be rebuilt.
  • Complete the Yodit Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Yodit is the final Campaign of "The African Kingdoms" expansion to Age of Empires 2 and consists of five levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

During the third mission,  An Army Marches on Its Stomach (10G) can be unlocked.

Some tips for the other missions are:

    • 1st Level - Quite easy, especially if you get the capped rams, just build an army then attack one of the bases, the western mountain base is probably the easiest.
    • 2nd Level - You'll probably lose your docks, just focus on defending your other base, trading can be a good source of gold, once you have defended your main base, build an army and roam the map completing the objectives, you will have to attack one of your allies, the purples are probably easiest, just build a few rams as part of your army, then station them near their castle before changing diplomatic stance with them.
    • 4th Level - Again quite easy, build your base, there's lots of gold on the island below your start, then build some troops either cavalry or your unique unit and wander the western island capturing all the resource points and killing the monasteries, once you've done this not only will your ally attack if you found all the villages but you should have enough of an army to attack the main base.
    • 5th Level - Your enemies generally stick to castle age units making this quite simple, simply build both bases, western one has food and gold, eastern stone, and build some minor defences, the build your army, your population may limit you a bit but you'll want some siege for the towers (trebuchets ideally) then an army with them, at some point the southern red base will build a wonder but this is easily destroyed as you should have an army by then, for the main base, just focus on the towers you can leave everything else. If you run low on gold, trade with the markets in the southwest and southeast.
  • Complete the Bayinnaung Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Bayinnaung is the first Campaign of "The Rise of the Rajas" expansion to Age of Empires 2 and consists of five levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

During the first mission Chasing the Crown (20G) can be unlocked

Some tips for the missions are:

    • 1st Level - After completing the 1st objective and hopefully netting the Chasing the Crown (20G) achievement, just age up, build up a small army and attack the yellow base, south of yours before attacking the blue base and capturing the monument to win. NB: you could build a castle just south of your start to lure the yellows troops to death.
    • 2nd Level - Don't worry too much about losing a relic or 2, you're on the defence from the beginning and cant build walls, towers, castles or markets. you can however build a wall of houses for defence, your main threat will be the yellow, just build some troops (your unique unit is good) level them up then take them out first, try to keep your monks alive at the back healing your men. Once your in the imperial age don't be afraid to spend some gold. The yellow base to the north has some gold mines but more importantly if you research redemption at a monastery and you're careful you can convert their market making this scenario easier, one the yellow's are dealt with focus on the reds to the east. The blues in the west can be left alone.
    • 3rd Level - Ideally you want to kill Smim Sawhtut at the start of this mission to make your life easier later, i found the best way to do this was take your villager to get the monk, move the monk down and convert the warrior, use the warrior to kill the priests etc in your way, then use your monk to convert one of the elephants from the start, once this is converted your monk will likely die but just lure the other enemy elephant back to the start and use the blind monk to convert that one, then you should have 2 elephants to kill him with. You can build your base near where you get your main army, only the Oranges to the east should prove difficult to kill but just build your army and some siege then go on the attack.
    • 4th Level - You don't have to worry about economy really in this level, whenever you capture a villager just set them to work on the nearby resources (normally food) keep pushing forward and top up your men when you get a new base, the side objectives can be useful especially converting the king and prince as this will take control of their remaining troops.
    • 5th Level - The start of this can be quite difficult as you can't build men, you'll want your 2 armies to meet up as you can lose a lot of your starting men, move your eastern army south taking the first 2 monasteries along the way, meanwhile take your western army south as well using your navy to take out shoreline defences (try and protect your cannon galleons, land your other army as far south as possible to be able to move them to meet up with your main one, once you have been to all 4 monasteries you gain vast resources. Simply build a large army in the east with many cavalry and siege (bombard cannons and trebuchets) research all relevant techs the go on the offensive. a group of monks can be useful to prolong the lives of your men. You'll want to attack the 3 bases in the north east first one after the other. with your other base build a navy of say 20 galleons/fire ships and another 10/15 cannon galleons and use this to attack every building you can from the sea at the same time moving up the coast.
  • Complete the Gajah Mada Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Gajah Mada is the second Campaign of "The Rise of the Rajas" expansion to Age of Empires 2 and consists of five levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

During the second mission, No Royal Hair Touched (20G) can be unlocked

Some tips for the missions are:

    • 1st Level - Quite easy, just build an army and roam the map, you don't even really do too much research as this can be found if you explore the map, you can ally with the Mongols to buy time. if you need.
    • 2nd Level - Once you have reached the King (see No Royal Hair Touched (20G) for more details) you'll need to defend him in the short run, garrison him in the castle and 4 arbalests in each tower, your troops should easily be able to defend the island, if you used a siege tower to get over the wall rather than breeching the gate you shouldn't really be attacked too much either as most of the enemy can't get to you as the enemy gates are locked. Build your economy and an army then work your way around the outside of the city taking out some forces to make life easier before pushing through, make sure your path is clear before you move your king forward. You could use your castle to build some trebuchets and work your way round to destroy everything in reach of your little island.
    • 3rd Level - It's important to note you don't need to defend your allies they will always rebuild later if they're destroyed, boom your economy and you'll probably want a navy of cannon galleons with some support ships to take out everything you can reach. The yellows are best dealt with early on, I found best way was to drop a castle in the flagged area near their base, this can take out all their men and deny them resources, if you run out of gold/stone on your island don't be afraid to go to your ally's for island for it, though trade cogs with your eastern ally is also a good way to get gold.
    • 4th Level - Another quite easy level, once you gain your base you can cancel the 2 towers and build a castle straight away, build you economy using fishing ships/traps for food. Then build a navy consisting of galleons and cannon galleons, it's probably easiest to take out the blues in the centre then the east first, then move onto the greens in the west followed by yellow in the south, you only really need 10 cannon galleons and 10 galleons, you also only need to destroy the docks for each enemy to resign.
    • 5th Level - Quite a difficult level to finish with, you start with an army but no base, you can choose which one to take and both have there benefits, the far northern one is isolated on an island so is easy to defend and also allows easier trade to the grey settlement in the east but requires you to build a navy, You can't build siege in this scenario but it's as simple as build you economy, build an army, roam the outside of the map to take out the bandit encampments to give yourself breathing room, once you have your full army go on the attack, take the flags in the city to get buildings and use them to replenish troops as they die quickly.
  • Complete the Le Loi Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Le Loi is the third Campaign of "The Rise of the Rajas" expansion to Age of Empires 2 and consists of six levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

During the fifth mission, Not a Greek Tragedy (10G) can be unlocked. Some tips for the missions are:

    • 1st Level - Build a base, your starting position is actually quite good, then build your economy and a small army. Take your army round the map and take control of the villages but avoid the blue bases they are too heavily fortified. Keep a watch on your allies, if they look like they are in trouble you could always build a castle in their base and rebuild the walls.
    • 2nd Level - As soon as you get your men you'll want to build a small economy and some troops, archer units are good for killing enemy soldiers but you'll probably want some battle elephants / infantry to kill the buildings at the camp. Once you have an army move it out the northeast exit of your base and clear the path east to the camp then kill the buildings there, once this is done take Le Loi and put him there for safety (shouldn't be attacked) then take your army back to your base leaving a few around the north east exit to ensure the path is clear for your allied troops too get out. you're base will be destroyed but try and hold out as long as you can, the only economy you need is there to build troops consistently.
    • 3rd Level - Quite an easy level, work your way around the outside destroying the enemy that gets in your way, help the farmers near to where you start and also rescue the villagers, once you have rescued all the men you can take the transport ships you find across the water and build a new base, boom your economy then go on the attack, you can even build a castle near the entrance to their base to help defend and lure out some troops. Try to do the secondary objectives as they will get you gold etc.
    • 4th Level - Another quite easy mission, boom your economy then attack, your unique units are good at destroying walls, towers etc if you have a large army of them, or use trebuchets, you can take out the green to north and purple to west to make life a bit easier but it isn't necessary. Make sure you don't damage the gun powder stores when destroying the towers next to them
    • 5th Level - See Not a Greek Tragedy (10G)
    • 6th Level - At the start try to keep as much as your army alive as possible, then once the battle is over build your economy at both bases, the western base will most likely need a castle to the north to defend it, you can then use all your starting troops (maybe build a few more and definitely get blacksmith/university upgrades etc) to choose which way to attack, you can go either west or east, just take it slow, wipe out the light blue base whichever way you go then proceed through the centre destroying castles etc with your siege whilst defending with your units.
  • Complete the Suryavarman I Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Suryavarman I is the final Campaign of "The Rise of the Rajas" expansion to Age of Empires 2 and consists of five levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

During the fifth mission, Relic Hoarder (5G) can be unlocked. Some tips for the missions are:

    • 1st Level - Quite easy, you can take you initial army to the south eastern then north eastern red bases and wipe them out before they become a threat. there after build your economy then your army and go on the attack, you'll probably need a couple of rams to get through the walls surrounding the yellow castle and to help damage it to lure out the enemy.
    • 2nd Level - Again quite easy, build a few rams at the start then take your starting army north and work clockwise round the map, you only have to kill units and the main tower or castle at each base, don't destroy others or you will lose free buildings garrison a man in each ram to make it move faster, don't neglect your economy but your staring army should only need a few men to top it up.
    • 3rd Level - There's a few paths/strategies you can take, at the start I chose the battle elephants and the group with the cataphract. Once you leave the base with your army, head south and take the docks, use your ships to clear the river, then load the transport ships and unload them at the first opportunity on the other side (quite far north), take your group a little bit north here then cut down the north western side of the map until the end, you will have 1 major battle but the rest should be minor skirmishes that you win easily. if you want hang back after each battle and use your monk to heal your men, keep you heroes to the back
    • 4th Level - Boom you economy from the start, you can gather all your starting troops and take them north to clear out you island. there after you'll need a navy, you can clear the further north island with a small navy and your remaining troops if you land there. but the rest will require a larger navy including cannon galleons, near the end you'll want to land an army at your allies base and sweep along the south west edge of the map clearing the bases as you go.
    • 5th Level - See Relic Hoarder (5G)
  • Complete the Ivaylo Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Ivaylo is the first Campaign of "The Last Khans" expansion introduced with Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition and consists of five levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

Some tips for the missions are:

    • 1st Level - Can be quite difficult to defend your base early one, send out some troops to explore to gather animals, your main defence will be to the west to defend from the blues, your unique building the Krepost is like a mini castle and can help you defend. Build your economy then you'll want to go on the attack, you can attack the blues to the west if you wish, each yellow base is easily defeated by destroying the castle then the Bolyar within you don't need to destroy other buildings. If you choose to ally with the Green's station a few units around his Hero as when the final yellow base falls he will change stance back to enemy with you.
    • 2nd Level - At the start, ignore the villagers you cant save them, continue round the outside heading past the central church to the main red base which will become yours, once it does build your economy, you can actually wall yourself in further down blocking off the greens bridge and access from the church, then just build an army and go on the attack against your enemies, by taking out your enemies you should be able to make it easy to defend the church (make sure you keep men nearby to re capture the church should the enemy near victory). you can actually build castles close by to the main bridges helping you defend the island and keep the enemy away.
    • 3rd Level - At the start stick to the western edge of the map, get to the transport ship then sail to your allies base in the north. Once you have control of the base don't worry about economy, just start spamming out troops as you'll be consistently attacked (don't neglect upgrades too), you can also build a castle or Kreposts before your walls are breeched for defence (don't worry about losing villagers a new one spawns automatically if one dies. Once you have got to a stage where you can wield a large army (cavalry is a good option) go on the attack, if you chose to take out the greens and reds to make defence much easier just focus on killing the 3 khans ignore all buildings at each of there bases (the khans are purple heroes), once you do they'll become your allies making it significantly easier. You can also take your cavalry assuming you have about 60men and just ride straight for the tent and destroy it.
    • 4th Level - Immediately above where you start is a statue, if you convert the villager above this, you can then move forward with him to find a scout, again move him forward until you find both the next villager and the one above that near the lumber camp, you can then move him forward towards your allies base and find more villagers including a couple who can cut down the trees in your path. once you get your base build the economy and build some defences then you'll be able to go on the attack, the yellow base is in your way but can largely be ignored as can the purples once you have an army. Once you have a clear path, run your hero to the friendly castle.
    • 5th Level - Once you reach the friendly camp and get some men, convert the passing villager and take your military north to the Hungarian town centre and destroy it. Build a base and economy and some troops, you will lose this base once you kill the Hungarian leader in the castle, so don't worry about building an excessive army or the best economy (you will however before you do this want to research everything as this will save resources later, once you get your 2nd base build some defences and your economy quickly. you'll want a large army and i found best method was to secure the middle crossing leading to the small island with a monastery on, by building castles on the island and both banks of the river you can separate the 2 enemies and also create an area for you to build the navy you will need to destroy the greens, for the purples ignore most buildings and just get to the wonder and destroy it. You'll need a large navy for the greens, demolition ships are very beneficial at smashing through their lines and taking out their docks as they wont rebuild.
  • Complete the Tamerlane Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Tamerlane is the second Campaign of "The Last Khans" expansion to Age of Empires 2 and consists of six levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

During the fourth mission Raging Wildfire (10G) can be unlocked

Some tips for the other missions are:

    • 1st Level - Quite easy, at start gather your full army and head west to the blue base, once its in range head north around the outside then come down and aim to kill their hero unit whilst leaving all other untouched, once you kill him the base will become your allies. From there build a small economy then take your army and head north west again this time attacking the dark blue base, kill there town centre and villagers and they will resign, you should now have access to 2 of the 3 relics needed. The red base in the north has both its markets outside of if it to the east and the west, destroy these and the should stop building as many men, then you can go on the attack against them.
    • 2nd Level - Quite easy again, try and complete the secondary objectives to make it easier, build your economy with the free villagers you keep getting, and build an army including some siege to take out any 3 enemies (you'll also get free troops from your other ally), after this your ally to the north will change stance and try and attack you, before you destroy the 3rd castle you could build some castles in their base to help kill them, or alternatively just take your remaining army and go on the attack.
    • 3rd Level - After the initial battle you can setup your base north of where you start, then take your remaining army west to the grey base, go round the outskirts to lure out the troops and kill them without harming the buildings, once you kill all grey troops the base will become yours, from their build a small economy (don't worry too much about food) and try to complete the secondary objectives as these will help you. Once you have a large army pick 2 enemies and go on the attack, siege rams can be useful against there defensive structures.
    • 4th Level - See Raging Wildfire (10G)
    • 5th Level - At the start, set your fishing ships to work it's definitely worth building some new ones, take your army south slightly and take out the small red base, then move south until you capture the base, from here boom your economy, you can take your army to take out your nearby enemies whilst they are still weak, in particular the red base to the north east and the yellow base just south of yours. If you save an enemy market at either of these bases you can trade with it to get your gold up, once you have spare resources exchange them at the market for gold too, but don't be afraid to spend a few to build a reasonable army as raiding enemy bases is a great source of gold.
    • 6th Level - As soon as the level starts, look to boom your economy, i recommend building 3 town centres straight away, then take your whole army 1st anti clockwise round the enemy stronghold and defeat the blue enemies there, then work clockwise around the centre taking out the dark blue enemy bases and completing the side missions, in the mean time if your economy is building, start building your defences, with castles and walls, when the timer is nearly out, bring your army back to your base to help defend. Once the defence is completed build a new army consisting of troops and some siege and go on the offensive, first against the reds to the west of your now allied base, then south to the stronghold to defeat them and win the scenario.
  • Complete the Kotyan Khan Campaign.

*Story related and can't be missed

Kotyan Khan is the Final Campaign of "The Last of the Khans" expansion to Age of Empires 2 and consists of five levels. Upon completing the final one the achievement will unlock.

During the second mission, Cuman Flush (20G) achievement can be unlocked. During the fifth mission, He Won't Be Back (20G) achievement can be unlocked. Some tips for the missions are:

    • 1st Level - Quite easy, just take your cavalry and go from base to base as quickly as possible gathering as many men as possible, avoid the castle in the east until your objective is to destroy it.
    • 3rd Level - Head for your ally at the start, then to the base, from there you need to quickly boom your economy and make an army, i chose to use a mix of the unique unit and camel's then ride round the bases capturing them back, finally head south to the ally and break through the enemy lines guarding them, ignore the east of the map entirely as you'll just loose men.
    • 4th Level - At the start, explore the area to find missing ox carts and take them to your base, rather than train new men look to upgrade the ones you have so they last longer, once ready attack the yellow base and take the trebuchets, at this point the oranges and blues will turn on you so take your army to the middle of the map to cross the river using the transport ships. Once across the river, try taking out the small bases, if your running low on troops after the first couple of bases, stay as close the the edge of the river as you can and head towards your new base to sneak past the towns, after taking out the castles and several towns take you army and run for the end, there is a path round the outside of the red base you don't need to attack it.
  • Convert the Cathedral in Milan without acquiring a single Villager in the third Barbarossa mission.

Play on standard difficulty. It is then recommended that your rush with your starting army to the cathedral. You will want to take your monks first followed by the rest of your army. On the west side of Milan are two gates, a relic and some sheep. By capturing the sheep you can place your army near the gates on no attack then send the sheep one by one to the enemy. They will then open the gate for you - if you can quickly block the gate open with a man you can get your army through. Then send your monks to convert the cathedral while your army defends them.

See the below video for more guidance on this strategy.
  • Destroy every enemy Wonder before it is completed in the sixth Attila the Hun mission.

This can be quite difficult and a bit of a rush but part of it is knowing when the enemy will build a wonder.

    • Patavium (purple) who start next to you will build a wonder straight from the start
    • Aquileia (red) in the north build when your troops enter Patavium's walls
    • Mediolanum (green) to south of your base, build a wonder at the hour mark
    • Verona (yellow) in the east build once you have entered Mediolanum's walls
    • Patavium (purple) build a second wonder once you have entered Verona
A basic strategy might may be as follows:

    • Build a castle near the lake at Patavium early on and attack the gate, this will lure out there troops. Then destroy the wonder.
    • You will want to destroy part of the town later on if you get chance as they will still continue to build troops from there and also build a 2nd wonder there later.
    • Aquileia's wonder can be attacked from outside there base by going to the far north with trebuchets, they will resign once the wonder and town centre are destroyed
    • Mediolanum's wonder can also be attacked from outside the walls via going as far east to the coast with trebuchets. It is recommended that if you have time you take out there outside castle and some of the base before they start building. They will resign once the wonder and town centre are destroyed.
    • Verona's wonder should be easy as by now most enemies should be dead and you should have a large army, if you take out there town centre and wonder they will immediately resign after this.
    • Patavium's final wonder is also easy as everyone else should be dead by now, so once you have destroyed Verona's just take your army back and quickly destroy it forcing them to resign once there 2nd town centre is also destroyed.
  • Kill Kushluk before 20 minutes have elapsed in the second Genghis Khan mission.

The best way to complete this is simply to rush with your starting army. You will want to use one soldier to attack their tower and lure the Kara-Khitai away from their base, then rush through with the rest of your army to find and kill Kushluk. If he flees he will flee back to his town centre. You can prevent him fleeing, however, by attacking the wall to the south of where he is.

The following video has a good strategy at 8:55
  • Defeat the Jin before they start constructing a Wonder in the third Genghis Khan mission.

One of the harder achievement in the game. There are a couple of strategies for this but you will need to be quick either way. The best method I've found is as follows:

Immediately take your army east to the engineers' base and capture the transport ship then the villagers. Move the transport ship to the east side of this island, then send your villagers across the sea to the island with Jin followed by your army. Build your town centre here followed by building a castle next to Jin's north gate (so it is in range of the two towers at the very north of Jins base). You will want to use this to destroy the towers, gate and any men that come into range.

You will want to research murder holes and also build a stable or two and start building camels. Quickly boom your economy, when you need gold there is some next to the two towers of Jin.

Start sending raiding parties into Jin's base to harass the villagers to the north and lure the troops to your castle. As soon as you can you'll want to build a second castle just south of the stone so it is in range of the stables. This should now help prevent Jin building his wonder and have delayed it. Finally, once the stable is destroyed, build a third castle below where his stable was to attack the town centre. Once this is destroyed Jin should surrender and the achievement unlock.

Remember to keep training troops to harass Jin and also some siege units if you can to quickly destroy his buildings.
  • Kill an enemy King with a Petard or Demolition Ship.

A King must be killed to defeat an enemy in a regicide game. Simply start a regicide game on a tiny map with infinite resources against a standard AI, then advance to the castle age, build a castle then spam Petards. The king will usually be garrisoned in a tower, surround the tower with Petards, destroy it then use the remaining petards to kill the King. If you lose track of the king you can use the spy research at the castle which will show you his location briefly.

Note: you could start in the castle age if you wish but this means the AI can also build castles immediately so may make it a bit harder.
  • Defeat the Hungarians before Subotai has arrived in the sixth Genghis Khan mission.

To defeat the Hungarians you must only destroy their two castles and two town centres. Do this before the 40-minute mark when Subotai arrives.

You'll want to boom your economy quickly as always. Then, build at least one castle by the bridge. Build a mix of Camels and Mangudai and lure as many of the enemies over the bridge into your castle early on. You'll want about five trebuchets, once you've cleared out some enemies take your army and attack the first enemy castle. You'll probably want to build another castle on the other side of the bridge. Move forward and quickly break open the gates and take out the second castle, then take half your Saboteurs to each town centre (one to the south and one to north west of their main gate) and quickly destroy it to end the mission.
  • Defeat all opponents before 30 minutes have elapsed in the fifth Attila the Hun mission.

This is one of the hardest achievement in the game. As soon as the mission starts you will want to build several stables and spam out as much cavalry as you can, going to attack the blues in the north first and circling round anti clockwise. You'll need good micro management of your economy and building troops as well as attack all at once. A mixture of Tarkens to quickly take down buildings and knights to take out men is recommended.
  • Prevent Tabasco from being defeated in the third Montezuma mission.

This achievement needs you to be very quick at the start, You will want to take four villagers and your lone scout towards Tabasco. Have the four villagers build a mining camp and the set of stone closer to there base and quickly mine for enough stone to build a castle. Meanwhile begin building your economy as normal.

Early on Tabasco will be attacked. You will want to use your one scout to attack Cortez's Rams. Their town centre should be able to deal with the normal enemies. As soon as you have enough stone build a castle next to Tabasco's town centre and repair any damage that has been done to the town centre.

This should help prevent them from resigning. It is recommended that you build another castle on the other side of the town centre as soon as possible and remember to research murder holes as well as any other techs that increase defence. Be wary of cannon galleons as they can attack your building out of range.
  • Win "Lepanto (1571)" without allowing any Turkish Transport Ship to unload on your shores.

Immediately as the game starts press F3 to pause the game. You will then want to instruct all the villagers around the wonder to do something else such as economy, etc. Doing this will prevent the enemy from rushing you immediately.

You will want to build defences along the shore line, essentially just castles to prevent the enemy from landing and make use of your navy to destroy transport ships.

Note: destroying a transport ship with a demolition ship will obtain you the D-Day (D stands for Demo) (10G) achievement.

The best place to build some castles is on the edge of the nearby islands as this will mean the ships have to pass to get to land.

You can later on build plenty of elite cannon galleons and go on the attack. This will allow you to destroy the enemy docks and buildings as well as sink the transport ships still at their base preventing them from ever reaching you.
  • Win "Bapheus (1302)" by defeating all other Turkish factions without forming an alliance with them.

Quite easy if played on the standard difficulty. During the Bapheus (1302) level of the historical battles, you will be given the chance to ally with another Turkish faction. Ignore this and defeat them instead. Do this before you attack the byzantine castle and the achievement will unlcok at the end of the mission.
  • Kill King Takayutpi before 5 minutes have elapsed in the first Bayinnaung mission.

Requires a bit of micro management but not too bad. As soon as the scenario starts take your unique unit (Arambai) east then put them in between the southern palisade wall and the trees. Attack the wall several tiles in then take your men upwards. Attack the king making sure you block his path. If he escapes just restart. If you're having difficulty you have enough time to research bloodlines at the stable, or even the castle age followed by husbandry.
  • Convert Afonso without killing a single Portuguese unit in fifth Francisco de Almeida mission.

Before you can convert Afonso you will need to convert 10 of his men and not kill any. Fortunately his men are grouped in pairs either on patrol or standing still. Simply take your monks and your missionary, have the missionary go forward and start converting one man, then lure him and his friend into your two monks and have them convert whilst they chase the missionary. Once converted send them back to your base so they don't accidentally kill anyone. Whilst waiting for your monks to regain the ability to convert, build up your economy and base.
  • Destroy all Roman Castles before 30 minutes have elapsed in the fourth Alaric mission.

Easily one of the hardest achievement in the game. You will need to know how to quickly boom your economy and also micro manage your armies.

It is recommended that you slow the game speed down if you struggle and also use F3 to pause from time to time as this will allow you to manage more things at once. For the boom of the economy don't go overboard but you will probably want, say, 20 villagers each on wood and food, and 10 on gold. Also set red to ally so you don't waste time accidentally attacking them as they pose no threat.

As soon as you start you will want to take your main army east to your ally, and then you scout west to the other one. This will mean they start attacking the enemy as soon as they can. You will also want a castle quickly so you can start building trebuchets with Huskarls as support.

The video below serves as a good guide along with the following:

Campaign Achievement “Rome Was Destroyed in One Day” Standard Difficulty Playthrough
  • Win the fifth Sundjata mission on Hard difficulty.

As you would expect from the difficulty level, this can be quite hard and you will need to be quick. As soon as it starts you will want to boom your economy. The enemy will be aggressive and you will likely want a land army and a navy. For your land army, Gbeto warriors are cavalry can be good, though be warned the enemy will counter. It's also useful to back these up with a group of monks to keep them alive as resources will become scarce later in the game. Finally, have some trebuchets for siege, especially gold and stone. For the navy you will want some fast fire ships and cannon galleons, shortly into the game the enemy will build a wonder, at this stage you'll want to take a couple of transport ships of troops and your navy to them, but be warned of the towers in the sea they can be deadly. Use your navy to attack the enemy base from the south, taking out their towers and docks with your cannon galleons, while countering their war galleys with your fire ships. Then land your army where their destroyed docks are, take some trebuchets to hit the wonder and your army to defend.

After the wonder is destroyed, take out as much as the enemy base as you can as they wont really rebuild but take note that it will be a long hard slog of defending until they run out of resources, if you can take out all their docks, you can control the sea with the extra gold. also note there is gold and stone to the north that they will mine if you are not quick, it may be worth taking these early on and saving the gold in your base until later.
  • Reach the King before 10 minutes have elapsed in the second Gajah Mada mission.

Whilst you will have to move quickly, the time limit isn't too bad. As soon as the game starts send your scouts north the purple base then turn them around and head east down the edge of the map to discover various buildings etc. At the same time build a town centre then build a siege workshop and a siege tower once this is done. Place your Karambit warriors in the siege tower, the tower to the gate nearest your town where the purples have attacked then move it up between the two walls a bit closer to the castle until you can unload your men safely, having then quickly run to the King.

Alternatively you can follow the strategy in the video below.
  • Win the second Kotyan mission without advancing to the Castle Age.

Quite easy: at the start, retreat straight to the objective, and from there build a couple of town centres and build your economy being careful not to advance in age. You can take you starting troops south to start harassing the yellows and can even take out there closest town centre if you take out the villagers first to give yourself the advantage. This should put them on the back foot. Once you have a reasonable economy train some troops such as spearman and scout cavalry, in addition you can also train battering rams in the feudal age to help with the castles. Only focus on yellows, ignore the oranges to the east entirely.
  • Assist King Bela and defeat Austrian Duke Frederick in the fifth Kotyan mission before 45 minutes.

This can be a bit of a rush, but isn't too bad. The first thing to note is at the start you will want to choose to follow the blues rather than board the transport ship as otherwise the mission will change. Once you go that way, take your army with your cart to the wonder, bring any carts you find here for resources, you'll want to build boom an economy but it doesn't need to be massive you'll need stone and wood asap to build town centre's and castles.

You can use your initial army to help take control of a couple of the towns by destroying their towers (even better if you assist your ally in attacking so you save your men) this will provide you with more resources, build a couple of castles and some archery ranges then build say five trebuchets and a mix of your unique unit and cavalry archers, then go on the attack against the reds in the west, you can ignore the oranges entirely for the achievement and defeat them later, they don't pose much of a threat.
  • Convert 100 units using Spanish Missionaries.

Start a random map game as the Spanish, infinite resources, imperial age start, against a single easiest AI. From there build a large group of missionaries at the monastery and go on the attack converting every enemy unit you find.
  • Win a match as the Spanish while only creating Villagers.

The easiest way to do this is with wonder race as described in the Prominent Player (20G) achievement. Just make sure you only make villagers nothing else.
  • Destroy an opponent's Wonder with less than 100 years remaining on the Wonder Victory countdown.

Simply let your opponent build a wonder, and then destroy it when the countdown is below 100 years. A good place to do this in the campaign is Level 5 of the Saladin campaign.

After a short while Ascalon in the south will build a wonder but they will not train additional troops and are therefore are quite easy to kill. It is recommended that you kill the rest of the base then just leave the wonder standing with some trebuchets on standby until the countdown gets below 100 years, at which point destroy it.
  • Delete your starting Town Center and still win the game.

Just before you finish the a match just delete your town centre. You could do this whilst going for the difficulty achievements. See Prominent Player (20G) for more information.

Alternatively this can even be done on the first level of the William Wallace Campaign. Once you reach your town, just click on the town centre and delete it.
  • Destroy a ship using a melee unit.

Sometimes you will find a ship comes close to the shore or into shallows. At this point take some melee units (for instance knights) and attack it. Best done against a war galley as that way it should not just flee when you start to attack it.
  • Lose an unfinished Castle that is at least 95% complete.

The best way to get this would be to quickly build a castle near an enemy base. Once it gets to 95% or more take all your villagers off and walk away leaving it to be destroyed.
  • Beat an AI opponent on "Peaceful" difficulty in a 1v1 game.

Simply win a match against an AI set to Peaceful difficulty.

See Prominent Player (20G) for more information.
  • Beat an AI opponent on "Standard" difficulty in a 1v1 game.

Simply win a match against an AI set to Standard difficulty.

See Prominent Player (20G) for more information.
  • Beat an AI opponent on "Moderate" difficulty in a 1v1 game.

Simply win a match against an AI set to Moderate difficulty.

See Prominent Player (20G) for more information.
  • Beat an AI opponent on "Hard" difficulty in a 1v1 game.

Simply win a match against an AI set to Hard difficulty.

See Prominent Player (20G) for more information.
  • Beat an AI opponent on "Hardest" difficulty in a 1v1 game.

Simply win a match against an AI set to Hardest difficulty.

See Prominent Player (20G) for more information.
  • Beat an AI opponent on "Extreme" difficulty in a 1v1 game.

Simply win a match against an Extreme AI. See below for a quick method to this.

Play Wonder Race, Infinite Resources, with any civilization, on desired difficulty setting, post-imperial starting age, Turbo building mode. As soon as it starts send two villagers to start building the wonder. Then spam up your villager create queue in Town Centre up to 14. While clicked on the Town Centre, quickly set Gathering Point on the wonder. This will automatically make a villager made from that Town Centre start working on the Wonder.

Have your third starting villager build another Town Center and spam the villager queue again, setting the gathering point to the Wonder, then have him start building houses. Seven or eight is probably more than sufficient.
  • Win a game with every civilization.

Whilst most of this can come naturally via random map games and the various campaigns, the quickest way to obtain it is via creating a custom scenario.

You'll want to setup a custom map with several archers for you surrounding a single villager for the player 2. Thereafter set your civilisation to the one you need then save the map, place the map in a custom campaign then play the campaign, as soon as the map loads you should win. You'll then want to change your civilisation to the next one, resave the scenario then resave the campaign. You will need to win as every civilisation and also as it set to "Random" and "Full random". The achievement can be a little glitchy so it's recommended that you just do every civilisation in order even if you have the achievement for that civilisation previously.

An alternative method would be to play random maps, See Prominent Player (20G) for a quick method of winning a random map game.
  • In a regicide game each player has a King they must defend. The objective is to kill the enemy king. The best way to do this is 1vs1 random map against an easy AI, Tiny map, any other settings.

You will also want to try and kill the king with a Petard or Demolition Ship as by doing so you will also unlock Out with a Bang (20G).
  • Eat 2 Wild Boars in the Dark Age.

Start a random map game, set the starting age to dark age, map all revealed. Then simply build several villagers and hunt some Wild Boar. You normally have at least one wild boar near your starting town centre, and the second may be near the enemy.
  • Win alone against 3 human opponents.

This is hard to achieve naturally and requires a decent level of skill or luck at the game. The best way would be to find three other people to help you with it.

Once you have your group, set up a multiplayer game with yourself on team 1 and the three others on team 2, Small or tiny map, all visible, can be any game mode but regicide is quick with a castle age start. Once it starts have the three people just walk their kings into your base and kill themselves, winning the game for you.

Once done swap places until you all have the achievement.

DLC: Title Update

There are 38 achievements with a total of 300 points

  • Blow up an enemy Demolition Ship with a Demolition Ship of your own.

Quite easy. If you find an enemy demolition ship just make sure you attack it with a demolition ship of your own rather than anything else. The final Saladin levels should present a few opportunities to get this.
  • Train 1,000 Condottieri as a non-Italian civilization.

Set up a random map game, Post imperial age start, Turbo mode on, infinite resources, All techs off, with an ally who is Italian and any enemy. You can be any civilisation but the Huns are recommended since they don't need to build houses.

Once it starts just build a load of barracks then build condottieri. To kill them faster if you need to you can select a group then press "shift + delete " and it will kill them all at once.
  • Shoot 100,000 arrows with your Chu Ko Nu.

Start a random map game, post imperial age, infinite resources, turbo mode, tiny map, 1 easy enemy AI, map all visible, set the map style to Arena and your civilisation to Chinese.

Once the game starts build several castles then a load of elite Chu Ko Nu, hit enter to bring up the command interface and enter "104" (this stops the enemy resigning). Once you have several large groups of Chu Ko Nu, take them to the enemy base and start destroying the enemy walls and buildings. By the time most of the walls are destroyed the achievement should have unlocked.
  • Convert 1,000 units.

First you will want to create a custom map. You will want to place a monk for yourself, change your starting age to the post imperial age, then for player 2 place a militia next to him, you will then want to copy the terrain around this and paste nearby, then copy the two sets and paste nearby again, once you do this a few times you should be able to quickly blanket cover the map with men, then save the map and add it to a custom campaign. After that go to campaigns and play the map, the game should win once every enemy is converted should take a few seconds and then the achievement should unlock, if not just check the stats screen for the number of conversions and if less than 1000, just play it again to get the rest.
  • Build 300 Trebuchets.

This will probably come naturally as trebuchets are the go to imperial age siege weapon built at the castle. If you want to get this quickly just setup a random map game, post imperial age start, turbo mode, infinite resources, then build some castles and spam trebuchets.
  • Create 500 Longbowmen in a single match.

Longbowmen are the unique infantry of the Britons. Start a random map game with the following settings:

    • Civilization - Britons
    • Post Imperial Age start
    • Infinite Resources
    • Turbo Mode On
As soon as the game starts set your villagers building castles, once the first castle is built start spamming out Longbowmen, if you hit your population cap then select the longbowmen and press Shift + Delete to kill them all at once. Should unlock quickly once you have enough castles building men.
  • Destroy 50 Castles.

This will come naturally throughout the game, however it can be boosted in random map games by building some mangonels/onagers and having them attack ground on your own castles to destroy them if you wish to attain it sooner.
  • Prevent the Korean Wonder from being destroyed in "Noryang Point (1598)".

Play on easiest difficulty and immediately send your starting navy to defend the wonder. It shouldn't be too difficult to keep alive - send a villager there to repair the towers surrounding it and you should have no problems, just build fast fire ships and watch out for enemy cannon galleons.
  • Kill the Scythian Prince and defeat the Scythians in the first Attila the Hun mission.

The Scythians are located to the south west and are quite easily defeated. Their prince is located in the western Roman empires fort and you will have chance to set him free, rather than do this just kill him instead.
  • Defeat all opponents before constructing a Wonder in the sixth Saladin mission.

One of the hardest achievements in the game. It will definitely take patience. Early on you are very quickly attacked and the enemies are relentless. It is normally best to focus on one enemy at a time but be aware that as you destroy bases they are likely to rebuild behind other enemies so it may not be possible to defeat them individually.

Early on it is possible to take out most of Jerusalem until they are no longer a threat, use cannon galleons sail down the coast to the east and attack most of their building out of range.
  • Destroy an enemy Transport Ship with a Demolition Ship.

Quite simple. The best map for this is probably Lepanto in the Historical Battles. You start with Demolition ships and the enemy will consistently try to land with Transport ships. Just destroy one of them.
  • Defeat all opponents instead of collecting the required Relics in the first Barbarossa mission.

During the first Barbarossa mission your mission is to collect the Relics, instead ignore them completely, do not touch the relics at all. Instead build a large army and go out to kill every enemy. Obviously best to do this on easy difficulty.

Bohemia can actually become a hard enemy but has no army at the start so you will want to attack them immediately. They are located in the northeast and can be defeated using your starting army. It is also relatively easy to defend your island you start on as there are only four ways to it.
  • Collect all Relics on the map in the fifth Suryavarman mission.

There are a total of nine Relics to collect and it helps if you move quickly at the start. You start with four in your base (two between your two castles by your army and two at your southern base next to the monastery), You will also want to collect the one just north of your base at the start, keep a couple of guys close by to it, and also the one south of your base. You may have to send some of your starting scouts to defend this from the blues.

The remaining three relics are a bit harder to get to, though your main aim should be to collect them without winning the mission as you could easily destroy three enemies. I chose to first quick set your economy going then head east with the starting army, you'll probably want a group of trebuchets to go with them, you then want to attack the purple bases along the eastern shore and destroy them in particular you'll need to destroy all the harbours. The seventh relic is just west of the most southern purple base and can be obtained now. Once purple are destroyed you'll need a transport ship as the eighth relic is located in the far western corner of the map on an island.

The final relic starts in the far northeast, between the red and blue base. It is defended by a castle so blue will capture it almost immediately. To attack the blues, head via the southwest edge of the map. They are not very well defended but are the only enemy who build monks, therefore if you fail to capture the other relics they will be located in their monasteries.

After placing all nine relics in your monasteries the achievement should unlock immediately. There after you should only have one more enemy to destroy to win the scenario and the campaign.

During the level you will be offered the chance to pay yellow 1000 gold to ally. If you do this they will distract some enemies for you.
  • Collect all Relics in the first El Cid mission.

There are a total of five Relics on the map, four of which are located in a clearing in the far east of the map below Alfonso's base, and Alfonso has the final one. Once you have a base you will want to take some men to the far east and gain control of the monks there along with the Relics.

Once you have these, start attacking Alfonso's base. His monastery is located to the north of his base.

Note: If he changes stance and becomes allied with you before you can destroy it and take the relic just use a Mangonel on attack ground.
  • Win "Kurikara (1183)" without forming an alliance with the Hojo clan.

You will get to a point where the Hojo clan request for you to send an envoy to them to discuss an alliance. Just ignore them completely and instead just progress and finish the level. It's relatively easy but having upgraded elite samurai and trebuchets with your unique tech makes it a breeze.
  • Amass 10 Condottieri, 10 Genoese Crossbowmen, and 10 Bombard Cannons in the fifth Dracula mission.

Play through the level until you get your town centre, once you do you will note near by there is a craftsman to the west who will create bombard cannons for you once you provide him with 1000 food. He takes time to make these so keep them safe at the back of your base. To the north of your base is the Italian village. By clicking on the archery range and barracks you will buy Genoese Crossbowmen and Condottieri, respectively. Once you have your bombard cannons, buy 10 of each and the achievement will unlock. Just make sure you don't complete the mission before you have 10 of each at once.
  • Conquer Delhi at least 5 minutes before the timer expires in the fourth Tamerlane mission.

Probably the easiest timed achievement. At the start, move all your army forward to try and keep as much alive after the battle as possible. Once the battle is over, take your remaining cavalry south to take out the enemy base, then west to take out the monasteries and finally if it's still large enough to the east to take out the larger enemy base. If not, train some more troops, and meanwhile, build your economy quickly (you start with a lot of villagers so this should be easy). Advance to the imperial age and build a large number of trebuchets (10-15) then with your main army defending them go on the attack against Dehli, take out the castles from distance and breech open the main wall. I completed this with over 50 min left on the clock so there's plenty of time to spare and it's actually almost impossible to miss this.
  • Win the second Alaric mission while training no military units aside from infantry.

Relatively simple, just don't build anything that isn't built at the barracks. Use you initial resources to get all the infantry upgrades. Then you'll want two armies, the first of a mixture of skirmishers and long swordsman to deal with enemy troops, the second made up of Huskarals to deal with buildings (available once you have destroyed the first town centre), just keep pushing forward, and only destroy walls that get in your way and the town centres. Leave all other buildings standing.
  • Purchase 20 Dragon Ships in "Lake Poyang (1363)".

During the mission in the historical battles campaign you will eventually have a full base. If you proceed to the north of the map you will find the cyan base. There, they will ask for 100 gold to create a Dragon Ship. You will need all 20 alive at once so it is recommended you wait until you have 200 gold to spare before sending them Tribute.
  • Amass an army of at least 100 Gbeto Warriors in the fourth Sundjata mission.

To be able to build Gbeto warriors from your castle you must first rescue the green princess from the camp south of their base and take her to their castle. Thereafter you must have 100 on the map at once. This is quite difficult as you are restricted to a population of 125. Therefore it is recommended you save once you have enough resources to build your army, use your villagers to build some extra castles to speed up production then delete most of your units that aren't Gbeto warriors. Once you have an army of 100 the achievement will unlock. If you wish you can try and win the scenario with them as they are decent against buildings, etc. Alternatively reload your save and make an army to your liking.
  • Do all secondary objectives and destroy all small bases before army marches in third Yodit mission.

Whilst there is a time constraint, and the timer will start shortly after the game does it's probably one of the easier ones. That being said, near where you start is a good place to build your base. You'll want to quickly boom your economy and advance to the imperial age. After that you'll want to build an army of cavaliers and have them roam the map and complete the following before the time runs out.

    • Destroy the purple base in the west (leave yellows alone)
    • Destroy the dock in the south (ignore the stone walled red base near here you can't take it)
    • In the centre of the map there are 6 small red bases destroy the military buildings in these and the troops near by, once the flag in them turns grey move on.
    • In the south east destroy the blue castle (rest of the blues can be ignored but kill them if there in your way)
    • in the north east there is a grey monastery that needs to be destroyed.
You should have plenty of time to spare before he starts moving.

Note: Ignore the red base in the south you'll lose most of your army if you try to take it and waste time/resources. Once all the above objectives are complete the achievement should unlock immediately providing you have time left.
  • Win without losing any of your four heroes in the fifth Le Loi mission.

Not overly hard, just don't use your heroes to attack. You have three bases which are separated. For your western base you can build some economy here and don't really have to worry about being attacked. Garrison your two heroes here in your town centre. The greens have a base nearby, however they are neutral so will ignore you if you ignore them.

For the central base, move your hero back to your barracks and keep him here. You'll want to build a varied army at this base consisting of champions, halberdiers, archers and probably a few elephants too. Near where the start battle took place just have them patrol this small area as the blues will send trade carts through every five or so minutes that if you can kill it helps. They will be defended but you should be able to keep an army big enough to kill them.

Your southeastern base is where you'll want to build your main army and a majority of your economy. Once you have an army and some defences (walling off the gap between the river to the southwest can stop the light blues attacking) attack the purple fortress to the east first - it is rarely well defended especially if you killed the trade carts. There is also a purple fort in the centre of the map; whilst not necessary to destroy it it does have a large amount of gold.

After attacking the western base, you can choose to move your army north to take out the blue base and join your armies up. If you do this once the path is clear take your hero from the middle base and move him to the southeastern one. Garrison him there to protect him.

Finally, take your army to the southern base and break through. Keep along the southern edge of the map until you reach the monument.
  • Successfully defend Cuzco without building any new walls or gates in the second Pachacuti mission.

Quite simple, just avoid building any walls or gates either stone or palisade throughout the mission.

After the initial battle you will gain a base and your ally will begin building a wonder. Even though you can't build walls you can build castles to defend it. You can also build a wall of houses to slow enemy advances. Whilst the enemy shouldn't threaten you until the wonder is built make sure you have built your defences before then. If you build up a sufficient army you could even go on the attack against the enemy bases to wipe out their forces before they send them to you and prevent them from building more.
  • Create 100 Throwing Axeman in a single match.

Start a standard game with the following settings:

    • 1 Enemy
    • Civilization - Franks
    • Post Imperial Age start
    • Turbo Mode on
    • Infinite Resources
Once the game starts use your villagers to build castles then start spamming out Throwing Axeman. Once the 100th one is built the achievement will unlock.
  • Kaboom

    10

Kill 1,000 enemy units using Demolition Ships.

Start a standard game with the following settings:

    • 1 Enemy - Hard difficulty or higher
    • Civilization - Any with heavy demolition ship, I chose Huns to avoid having to build houses
    • Treaty Length 15 minutes
    • Islands map with Tiny size
    • Post Imperial Age start
    • Turbo Mode on
    • Infinite Resources
Once it starts send your villagers out to build lots of docks and castles along the edge of your island to defend it. As soon as the docks are built start spamming out demolition ships. By the time the treaty ends you should have a large collection of them (make a save here so if you want to come back later you don't need to rebuild), then just send them in and repeatedly build more to replace, making sure they are set to either aggressive stance or so you have them on attack move/patrol so they kill the first enemies they come across. It should only take another 10 to 15 minutes to kill 1000 enemies.
  • Destroy a Trebuchet with another Trebuchet.

At some point the enemy will attack you with trebuchets. Simply use your own trebuchet to attack the enemy ones and destroy one. A good place for this is the fifth Joan of Arc mission. Along the south wall of Paris (west of where you start) is a castle with a trebuchet next to it. Simply use your own trebuchets to attack that one.
  • Kill 25 units with Trebuchets.

Whilst they're best at destroying buildings you can also use trebuchets to attack other units. The best way to kill them is to hide them behind a wall so the units don't get to close and wait for an enemy to attack with some men.
  • Explore 99% of a ludicrously sized map.

Start a standard game with the following settings:

    • 1 Enemy
    • Post Imperial Age start
    • Turbo Mode on
    • Infinite Resources
    • Map Size Ludicrous
    • May style (can chose any but team islands or costal are probably easiest)
    • Map exploration - Standard
    • Full tech tree
Once the game starts you will want to build Hussars and for any sea sections cannon galleons. Work in a methodical pattern so take them up then down so you don't miss bits. It is recommended you save as you go along. Once you are sure you have explored all the map make another save then go ahead and kill the enemy. In the final screen it should say 99 for exploration and the achievement should unlock. If you have missed any then load your save and look around for the bits you have missed.
  • Demolish 200 buildings with Battering Rams.

This will more than likely come naturally during the course of the campaign. Just build battering rams regularly and use them to take out key buildings. If you want it faster you can even have them attack houses, etc., once the main buildings in a base have been destroyed.
  • Build 30 Japanese Fishing Ships.

Start a standard game with the following settings:

    • 1 Enemy
    • Civilization - Japanese
    • Turbo Mode on
    • Infinite Resources
    • Coastal style map
Once it starts build a dock and some houses, them simply build 30 fishing ships.
  • Kill 500 units with Mangonels.

Whist some of this may come naturally killing your own units with them also counts. you can also get kills with their upgraded versions (i.e. onager and siege onager).

Start a standard game with the following settings:

    • 1 Enemy
    • Turbo Mode on
    • Castle age (or higher start)
    • Infinite Resources
You will want to build a siege workshop and, say, 10 mangonels, then build several barracks or archery ranges and set the gather point for them all to the same place, have the Mangonels attack ground out this location then start spamming out pikeman/skirmishers, etc. Your mangonels will kill them constantly and the achievement will unlock in no time.
  • Burn down 200 buildings with Tarkans.

Tarkans are the unique unit of the Huns. This will likely come naturally throughout the Atilla the Hun campaign as they are excellent at destroying buildings. If not then just use them in a standard game against a few enemy AIs
  • Collect 100 Relics.

This will come naturally throughout the game however it can also be boosted. The game registers the collection at the end of the level. Therefore if you play a mission with several relics you have captured make a save right by the end of the game then once you win, just reload the save and win again and it will give you a whole new set of captures.
  • Build 1,000 Farms in total.

This will come naturally as you play the campaign as farms are the standard way of getting food. It's good practice to have, say, 10 or 12 as a minimum on all levels, but probably want more like 20-25 to really boom your economy.
  • Kill an enemy Scout Cavalry with your Town Center.

Occasionally you will see a Scout Cavalry come and explore your base, especially in standard games. If you notice him heading near the town centre, ring the town bell to get your villagers in there quickly then have them attack it.
  • Spam the enemy with 500 Karambit Warriors in a single game.

The Karambit Warrior is the unique unit of the Malay, start a standard game with the following settings:

    • 1 Enemy
    • Civilization - Malay
    • Turbo Mode on
    • Infinite Resources
    • Castle age (or higher) start
    • Max population 500
Once the game begins build a few castles then start spamming out Karambit Warriors.
  • Loot 500 gold with Keshiks.

Keshiks are the unique unit of the Tatars and have the ability to "Loot" gold by killing enemy units, start a standard game with the following settings:

    • Several enemy AI's
    • Civilization - Tatars
    • Turbo Mode on
    • High Resources
    • Castle age (or higher) start
Once the game starts build a castle or two and a large group of Keshiks, then send them out to attack the enemy bases and kill units. You will need to kill around 200 units to gain the 500 gold.
  • Train 40 War or Battle Elephants in a single game.

Start a standard game with the following settings:

    • 1 Enemy
    • Civilization - Persians
    • Turbo Mode on
    • Infinite Resources
    • Castle age (or higher) start
Once the game begins build a castle or two then spam out War Elephants until the achievement unlocks.
Alternatively battle elephants can be trained at the stables by the Burmese, Khmer, Malay and Vietnamese.
