Introduction:
Welcome to Arcade Game Series: Dig Dug, one of four classic arcade games that has been ported to the Xbox One. The game is identical to the original game in terms of gameplay and graphics. The one difference is that there is an options menu that allows you to tweak a few game settings, making the game and the achievements much easier. There are a couple tough ones, but with a few attempts they're all pretty easily obtainable. So let's jump right in and start unlocking them.

Step 0: Change your gameplay settings
The first thing you'll want to do is go into the Options menu and first increase your lives to 5 instead of 3. Secondly, and most importantly, is turning on the option to start from any level. How this works is that as you beat levels, they become available to start from. This means that if you get to level 5 and have game over, you can then choose to start from level 5 with all five lives. You won't have continued any progress in terms of score or anything, but it allows you to progress to any level with ease.

Step 1: Play through to level 18
Now that you've changed your settings, you're best off playing through level after level until you get to level 18 because first off, you're going to want to get used to the controls. The control scheme is extremely simple and basic, but actually controlling your character can be a little awkward at first with the joystick. The second reason you're doing this is because you'll need to get to level 18 to unlock all of the "Obtain the ____" item achievements, as level 18 is where the last one, the pineapple, appears for the first time. You'll also get used to how the game plays, how to kite enemies and generally how to survive.

Step 2: Mop up easier miscellaneous achievements
Next thing you should do is knock out a handful of the miscellaneous achievements for dropping a rock on 2 enemies, one on 4 enemies, and for clearing a round by killing all enemies with rocks. These three achievements can be gotten at the same time by killing all four enemies in stage 1 with a single rock. Secondly you'll want to knock out the achievements for beating a level without digging and for defeating an enemy on the surface; these two unavoidably go hand-in-hand.

Step 3: The three tough achievements
At this point you should be down to your last three achievements: dig through the entire area on any round, dig 1000 spaces, and defeat 100 enemies in one playthrough. It doesn't matter what order you do them in but be warned they will likely take a few tries. Remember to set your lives to 5 instead of 3 in the options and then practice a bunch more if you have to, but it shouldn't take too many attempts to unlock each achievement.

Conclusion:
Arcade Game Series: Dig Dug is identical to the classic version of the arcade game, so if you liked it or have some serious nostalgia over it, it's definitely worth picking up for the cheap price (get the Arcade Game Series bundle if you want an even better deal). The achievements are also pretty simple and won't require too much time to unlock them all. Hope you enjoyed the game and congrats on another completion!

  • Obtain the Watermelon that appears after dropping 2 rocks in a certain Round.

Refer below to the "Pineapple" achievement solution for more information.

  • Obtain the Pineapple that appears after dropping 2 rocks in a certain Round.

Each of these achievements are earned by first making a cumulative total of 2 rocks (dying in between rocks 1 and 2 doesn't reset this) fall from their spot by digging under them. They don't need to actually hit an enemy, just make sure they don't hit you since they will kill you. Once you drop two rocks, the item will appear in the center of the level where you started, and you'll need to make your way back to it and grab it before it disappears.

Here is a list of each item and the level(s) in which they appear:

    • Carrot - 1
    • Turnip - 2
    • Mushroom - 3
    • Cucumber - 4 and 5
    • Eggplant - 6 and 7
    • Green Pepper - 8 and 9
    • Tomato - 10 and 11
    • Watermelon - 14 and 15
    • Pineapple - 18 and 19

As you can see, you'll need to get to level 18 to unlock all of these achievements. As noted in the roadmap, make sure to change the settings to give yourself 5 lives and to be able to start from any level. That will make getting to level 18 very easy. Then it's just a matter of dropping two rocks in each appropriate level and making sure you have a clear path back to get the item. Be aware that dropping rocks 3 and 4 will also make the item appear again in the middle of the level, giving you a second attempt. If you miss the item both times, you can just quit out and restart from the same level to try again.

  • Crush 2 enemies with one rock!

Refer below to "Rock and Roll" for more information.

  • Crush 4 enemies with one rock!

Refer below to "Rock and Roll" for more information.

  • Defeat all enemies in a Round using rocks!

These three achievements for defeating enemies with rocks can all be obtained at the same time by defeating all four enemies in stage 1 with a single rock. It will definitely take a few tries to align all enemies and get it set up properly and not have any enemies turn around or move out of the way in time.

In general, here's what you want to do. Try to make as few crosses over an existing path as possible. The more crossed paths you have, the more likely enemies with not follow directly behind you and will go on a different route. You'll want all enemies to be following directly behind you. So start digging towards an enemy to allow him to come after you, and do the same with a second. The other two enemies should phase through the dirt and come after you on their own. Then lead them on a long path around the outside of the level and then up to the underside of a rock, preferably the upper left rock as this gives you maximum vertical travel path for the enemies to be stuck in when the rock falls. If enemies catch up to you before you get to the rock, you can always turn toward them and fire a single pump to stop them briefly and give you some more room.

As noted, this will definitely take a few tries. Just keep restarting level 1 until you get every enemy to follow you properly and line up the path to the rock.

  • Clear any Round without digging!

This is very easily achieved on level 1. To do this, as soon as you spawn, travel directly up the route that is already dug for you and go to the surface of the level. Now just wait up there until the enemies come to you. Defeat them all on the surface and the achievement will unlock.

  • Dig

    50

Dig through the entire area on any Round!

This is one of the tougher achievements to obtain. You'll definitely want to make sure you have the settings set to 5 lives instead of 3, and naturally attempt this on level 1 since there are only 4 enemies and they're the slowest.

Digging through every space involves going through every space in BOTH directions (horizontally and vertically). By the time you're done, there shouldn't be any dirt left (check closely for small lines between squares) except for lines right at the surface.

The idea here is you'll want to first go through the entire area back and forth in a single direction (horizontal or vertical). This avoids leaving paths for enemies to cut you off and kill you. Once you're done with that, switch directions and work your way from one side of the area to the other, again circling back and forth.

You can go ahead and kill two of the four enemies right away, but keep the last two alive at all costs. If you kill a third enemy, the fourth will automatically run away and end the level. Also make sure you don't leave a dragon alive, since their fire can catch you from a much farther distance. Lastly, when you have an enemy following you, if they start catching up you can spin toward them, fire at them to pump them up once, then turn back and continue digging when they're slowed. You can eventually do 2 pumps each time, and then 3, just make sure you don't accidentally defeat an enemy.

It might take a few tries but keep at it and get a good pattern/path going and you should be able to do it before losing all 5 lives.

  • Rambler

    100

Dig 1000 spaces! (1 space is the same size as 1 character)

Unlike the "Dig" achievement, this does NOT require you to pass through every space twice (once horizontally and once vertically). You only need to pass through it once.

The entire area available on each level is a grid with approximately 200 spaces available per area. The best method for getting this achievement is on each level, take the longest and most indirect, windy routes as possible. Kill all but two enemies and essentially stay ahead of the remaining two enemies using the same strategies in the "Dig" achievement description. Once you start to feel overwhelmed, kill ONE of the two enemies. The final enemy will automatically begin to flee. If you created a windy route, he'll take some time to escape. During this time, take the opportunity to dig as many spaces as possible before the level ends.

The most important thing is to not put yourself at too unnecessary of a risk because if you run out of lives you have to start over, but if you accidentally defeat all enemies you can continue progress on the next level. The level on which this achievement will unlock will vary greatly depending on how much digging you can get in without killing all enemies. I personally had the achievement unlock on level 8 or 9, and I did a pretty good amount of digging on the first couple levels but had a couple levels where I barely got to do half of the level. Keep at it though and the achievement should be yours within a few tries.

  • Pass through an inflated enemy!

There is a high likelihood this achievement will come naturally while going for the other achievements, but if not, you unlock this by beginning to inflate an enemy by pumping them up a couple times without making them explode, then stopping, and while they're inflated and immobile, walk through them and the achievement will unlock immediately.

  • Defeat an enemy on the surface.

Refer to "Clean Harpoon" for more information.

  • Defeat 100 enemies on a single playthrough!

This is probably the toughest achievement in the game as you'll have to survive until level 15 to have 100 enemies available to defeat. In general, survival is naturally key, but also make sure to defeat every enemy on each stage. Don't let any escape! Also, if you haven't already, set your total lives to 5 instead of 3 so you can survive longer.

Here are some general survival tips:

    1. When inflating an enemy, it is much faster to hold towards the enemy (whichever direction on the joystick points toward the enemy you're inflating) and tap repeatedly. When done properly, you'll pump them once, release your weapon, pump a second time, release, etc., until the enemy explodes. This releasing between each pump allows you to bypass the standard delay between pumps if you just tap over and over.
    2. In the earlier levels, you can usually go straight to the surface of the level and let all the enemies come to you. In later levels you'll quickly get swarmed if there are too many enemies still left. A combined tactic is to kill a few enemies so there are only 3-4 left, then you can head to the surface to take out the remaining enemies.
    3. If multiple enemies are chasing you or an enemy is coming at you from both sides, you can inflate one with one pump, then the other with one pump, back to the first with a second pump, etc., until both explode. If both enemies are following you, the fast pumping noted in the first tip is the only way you'll be able to defeat them both without being killed.
  • Clear round 1!

Refer below to "Round 2 Cleared" for more information.

  • Clear round 2!

These achievements will unlock for simply completing the first two levels and will come with progression as you work toward getting to level 18 for the "Pineapple" achievement. As noted in the roadmap, change the settings to give yourself 5 lives instead of 3, and also turn on the option to start from any level. With these settings on you'll be able to clear every stage with ease.
