Introduction:
Welcome to latest release of the classic arcade game Galaga. Far from its early days as a staple of pizza parlors and mall arcades, this release is available in all of its pixelated glory for the Xbox One.

Abbreviated Walkthrough:
You can go into the settings to give yourself extra lives and turn on the ability to save your progress between levels. Doing so precludes you from having your scores appear on the leaderboard, but does not impact achievements, making this an incredibly easy completion. Simply play through the game. Whenever you run out of lives, reload at your latest level until you get to Stage 31.

Mop-Up:
Once you've gotten to Stage 31, there's no reason to play any further unless you want to. At this point, you can load up any level that you need to work on the achievements in question. Simply refer to the achievement guide for help.

Conclusion:
Galaga is a nice trip down memory lane. It was the only video game in the pizza place that my parents liked to eat at when I was growing up and I dumped plenty of quarters into it back in the day. Now it also serves as a simple completion and a very nice 1000 gamerscore. Enjoy!

  • Find the Blue Spaceship that appears in battle!

All of these achievements are awarded for encountering specific enemies. All of them appear in the first thirty levels of the game, so simply playing through the game will guarantee that you unlock all of these achievements.

  • Form a Dual Fighter!

The Boss Galaga is the green enemy that takes two shots to kill. The first shot will turn it dark blue and the second shot will destroy it. They have two primary attacks. The first is a looping dive that's identical to the attacks of all the other enemies. The second is a direct dive with no looping that stops about two-thirds down the screen. At that point, the Boss Galaga will emit a tractor beam. If your ship is caught, it will get pulled up to the Boss Galaga, turn red, and become a captured fighter. Once this happens, you'll have to use another ship to shoot the Boss Galaga, releasing your fighter. Be careful not to shoot the fighter itself. The newly released fighter will zoom to the bottom of the screen, fuse with your current ship, and form the dual fighter.

Please note that it appears the Boss Galaga stops performing the tractor beam attack when there are only a few enemies left in the wave, so you can't wait until it's the last enemy. You also need to shoot the Boss Galaga while it's attacking you. If you shoot it while it's stationary at the top of the screen, the fighter is not released, and will instead continue to attack you independently.

  • Shoot down a red captured Fighter!

Once this happens, you'll have to use another ship to shoot it down. There are two ways to do this. The first is to wait until the Boss Galaga is stationary at the top of the screen before shooting it. This does not release the fighter and it will continue to attack you so you can shoot it at your leisure. The other option is to try and shoot it during an attack as it trails behind the Boss Galaga. This is slightly harder because shooting the Boss Galaga by mistake will release the fighter, forming the dual fighter instead.

Please note that it appears the Boss Galaga stops performing the tractor beam attack when there are only a few enemies left in the wave, so you can't wait until it's the last enemy.

  • Escape from a Boss Galaga's tractor beam!

If your ship is in the path of the beam, it will start spinning and get pulled toward the Boss Galaga. Until your ship actually reaches the Boss Galaga, you can still fire, but you cannot control your ship. To unlock this achievement, you need to shoot the Boss Galaga and destroy it while your ship is being pulled toward it, but before it's actually completely captured.

Since you can't actually control your ship, your best bet is to simply mash the fire button as fast as possible once your ship is in the tractor beam. Obviously this will be much simpler if the Boss Galaga has been shot once already because the odds of hitting it twice before your fighter is captured are quite low.

  • Get a 70% or higher hit rate on Stage 10 or above!

The key to this achievement is that you do not actually have to finish the level to unlock it. Simply start up any normal level after Stage 9 (not a challenge level) and fire one shot into a crowd of enemies. If you hit, don't fire again and simply sit there and let the enemies kill you until the level ends. You'll have a one hundred percent accuracy score and the achievement will unlock.

  • Get a Perfect Bonus on the Stage 31 Challenging Stage!

All of these achievements require you to kill every single enemy on the respective challenge stage. The challenge stages are unique in that the enemies zoom through in a preset pattern and then exit the stage. You have one opportunity to kill them and that's all. Since the pattern never changes, the best approach is to load up the stage before the one you're going for, get a dual fighter, and then tackle the challenge stage. The video below can help you memorize the patterns. Some of the later stages can still be quite a challenge, but I found it helpful to mark the key locations for my ship on my television screen with tape or string. There's also a limit to the number of bullets that you can have on the screen at any one time, so it's important that you don't just button mash the fire button.

  • Without forming a Dual Fighter, get a Perfect Bonus on a certain Challenging Stage!

This achievement requires you to kill every single enemy on a challenge stage without the use of Dual Fighter. The challenge stages are unique in that the enemies zoom through in a preset pattern and then exit the stage. You have one opportunity to kill them and that's all. This is quite easy to get on Stage 27. Watch the video below, memorize the ship positioning, and then load up the level and shoot down every ship.

  • Reach Stage 10 and view the stage emblem!

Refer to "Stage 30 Reached" for more information.

  • Reach Stage 20 and view the stage emblem!

Refer to "Stage 30 Reached" for more information.

  • Reach Stage 30 and view the stage emblem!

All you have to do to unlock these three achievements is reach the stage in question. Thanks to the ability to pick any previously beaten level as your starting point for a new game, you essentially have unlimited opportunities to work your way up to Stage 30.
