Introduction:
Welcome to Def Jam Rapstar, created by Def Jam and 4MM. Let's get this out of the way right off the bat. No, this is NOT a fighting game like the past few Def Jam titles we have seen. It is a singing game much like Lips, but aims to fill a niche for those of us who enjoy rap music. The game covers music from the early days of rap through the present, and I feel it provides a pretty good mix of old school classics and modern day hits. It also claims to be the first game with vocal recognition, and therefore humming through the songs will not work in this game. You'll fill your meter and keep a multiplier up if you do this, but will be graded poorly on "Lyrics" and therefore it is strongly advised that you actually Rap/Sing all of the parts. Anyway, on to the walkthrough!
Step 1 - Career:
You can access career through the Main Menu. You'll choose "Play" and then "Career". Career consists of five "stages", each requiring you to earn a certain number of "Mics" on the collection of songs provided in order to move onto the next stage. Each stage also provides four challenges. One is always a "New Song" challenge, and will unlock a new song within that stage for you to earn more mics on. The other three are some combination of Endurance, Timing, Multiplier, High Score, or "Platinum Power" (Basically like star power in Guitar Hero, except it automatically activates once you fill it).
Work your way through career, and understand that no specific difficulty is required for any of the career-based achievements. Personally I started on Hard in order to get the "Unstoppable" achievement at the same time, but the bottom line is that you never have to select anything other than easy for career. You do, however, want to ensure that you are getting every possible mic available for all individual songs and ALL challenges. EVERY mic is needed in order to get the "Mic Fiend" achievement (305 Mics in Career). When career is finished with all mics, you should have a bare minimum of 20 achievements worth 475.
As an added note, if you have the Vision Camera or Kinect, you should hook it up and also be trying to get those achievements out of the way at the same time. For these, you want to make sure that you save 15 of your performances total, upload ten of them to the Community, making sure that at least one of them is a "5 Mic" performance and that you add a "Visual Effect" to one also. These steps will earn you an additional 5 achievements for 75. That wraps up everything for career.
Step 2 - Mop Up Remaining Offline Achievements:
Now you have reached the point where difficulty matters for some achievements and not others.
Expert: For expert difficulty, you only need to do two things. First play a song on expert with no help from vocals (On the difficulty select screen, choose "No" under "Vocals") and earn 3 mics (On Point). It is the most difficult achievement in the game, so follow the guide for help on that. Next, you can turn vocal help on again, and be sure to get 5 mics to earn the "DEF JAM SEAL" achievement. If you can get 5 mics with no vocal help at the same time, it will save you one song's worth of time. This is an additional 2 achievements for 50.
Hard: First of all, you will need to play a minimum of 50 songs on Hard, which is why I mentioned that during career, I started on Hard to get some of these out of the way. You need to get at least 3 mics on 50 songs. Next you will want to pick a song that has a singing part. On this song you need to get above 90% on all three graded categories at the end. Finally, plug in a second mic and choose a song you know well. Simply get five mics by singing the whole song into both mics, and you'll be done Hard difficulty. Everything remaining can be done on Easy. This is another 3 achievements for 100.
Easy: This is where the rest of the mopping up will be done. First, create a playlist of ten songs you KNOW you 5 mic. Getting 5 mics on all of them will earn you 3 total achievements for 35. Use an audio effect during any of the songs for another 5
. Next, go into freestyle mode and save 5 performances. They can each be as short as you want. Saving 5 of those will earn you 2 more achievements for 20
. Next you will want to play 30 total duet or battle performances combined. While doing this, ensure that you do a 5-song battle playlist and win every song. Also, be sure to win both a duet and a battle by 50,000 points each. Then load up a battle and rap into both mics the entire song, making sure to get a 25 rap-note streak (and because you're rapping into both mics, the streak will count for both players). Finally, load up a battle and follow the method in the guide for winning by 1000 points or less.
Once you get to 30 battles and duets combined, and have done all of the other things I just mentioned, you will have earned another 6 achievements for 80. You should also be around 140 - 160 songs total if career took you as many attempts as it did myself. You'll then want to play a few songs you know very well. Get Platinum Power 4 times in a song, and get "Dope" for all lyric sections in a song, and by now you should have gotten 10,000,000 total points across all modes for sure. That's 3 more achievements for 100
. The only remaining achievement to mop up is 300 total songs. Follow the guide for the quickest method. This earns you the last 20
to get from playing songs. You should now have 46 total achievements for 960
.
Step 3 - Go Into Community and Mop Up the Last 4 Achievements:
Follow the guide for the final 4 achievements, which are received for watching 50 videos, rating 1 video, having a video watched 2000 times, and having a 4-star rating on a video after it gets 200 ratings. This earns your last 40 and will finish up the game. Congrats!
Conclusion:
A very fun rhythm game, especially for fans of rap, and also a pretty easy 1000 points for those who give it a shot. It may not be the best game ever made, but I think it is incredibly fun and also introduces some new technology that fans of Rock Band and Guitar Hero have been waiting for: Vocal Recognition.
