Master Achievement in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

  • Master

    50

    Reach Level 50

  • How to unlock Master

How you level up in Skyrim is simple, yet complicated. Unlike most RPGs you don’t get experience for quests or kills, so levelling up the conventional way is out of the question, in fact, it’s all about levelling up sub-skills, which in turn levels up your character level. Every time you level up you get chance to whack 10 points on magika, stamina or health, as well as applying a perk.

There are 18 skills in the game which range from combat orientated skills like archery, one-handed weapons and blocking; and magic use like restoration, destruction and conjuration; all the way through to more deceptive tasks like sneaking, pickpocketing and lock-picking; and your general working jobs, like smithing, alchemy and enchanting.

In order to hit 50 you’ll have to do a wide range of tasks and level them up as far as possible. The truth is that you’ll never be able to stick with one discipline if you want to get to level 50 – I reached level 100 on my archery skill by about level 35. That means you’ll have to mix things up… use magic, use archery, use one-handed weapons, use two-handed weapons, smith weapons, enchant weapons, pick-pocket people, pick locks… the more you do, the quicker you’ll level up – so when you reach that level 100 on a skill, it’s time to move onto something else. It is worth nothing that a level 10 in a skill isn’t going to raise you character level as much as a level 90 would.

There are 3 ways though to level up skills and for tips on how to raise the individual skill levels, see the “Skill Master” achievement description where there are tons of tips that will help raise skill subsets across the board, getting you closer to that level 50 achievement quicker than usual.

  • Awesome. This means its gonna have a big level cap!
  • oblivion didnt have a level cap.
  • whow, thats a big level cap :)
  • It may not be a cap. It may just become very much harder to level once level 50 is reached, much like Oblivion. Then again, Fallout had a level cap. Can't wait for this game though
  • omg i cant wait
  • @2 Your major skills determined your level in Oblivion and those sort of had a cap of 100 (you could get past 100 with certain quest rewards like skill bonuses). Oblivion did have a level cap because at a certain point you couldn't keep gaining levels (without some sort of exploit/hack/cheat). On another note why do people think 50 is so big of a level cap? It seems pretty standard for an Elder Scrolls game. Can't wait for this.
  • #6 Technically it didn't have a cap, they didn't define a maximum level it was just possible to keep going due to jail and other skill deteriorating effects.
  • #6 Technically we are both GREEN MAN
  • good to see that
  • lol at #8
  • I hope it pays off to get to that much of a level like an awesome sword
  • Need more quests.
  • Looks like this is going to be the hardest of the achievements. Or if not the hardest, the most time consuming. Looks like Bethesda has made good achievements, something for everyone and an overall appealing list.
  • @13 agreed it's a very varied list definitely better than Oblivion. Looking forward to getting the 1k. ^.^
  • 50 is not the level cap. It's when xp slows waaaaayyyyy down. You can get to 51 and so on, it'll just take a lot longer per level.
  • Can't want for this game going to be awesome.
  • @15 how do you know?.. @16 this game is going to be EPIC
  • Level 50 is a soft level cap. Todd Howard said in an interview you can get to about level 75 in the game.
  • @15 there is no xp in the TES series, and everyone else there is no level cap levels are based on raising your major skills through using them or buying them from trainers and you can go to jail to lower your skill allowing you to further raise your levels
  • sorry forget i said anything my bad, i suck :(
  • Not getting anxious at all. I bet this will come with DLC which will make this more easy :)
  • @ #8 - Watched the 3-part game demo on LIVE, and the dude said there's gonna be 150 dungeons. One of them might have a Skeleton surrounded by plungers...
  • As long as there is still new stuff to do and places to go up until level 50 i'll be happy.
  • I hope this isn't a level cap :D
  • I'm glad the achievements are similar to Oblivion and are quite easy to obtain; none of that search around for collectibles crap!
  • @13 Yeah I have over 100hrs on each of my multiple Oblivion saves and I can't remember leveling past 20. Minotaurs suck in ES4!
  • This is going to be so much fun! CanĀ“t wait anymore...
  • there is no level cap in skyrim. the level up speed drastically decreases after you hit level 50. Todd Howard said the mathematical level cap is somewhere around 70.
  • Meh, if I know them right I'll get this by making my controller walk into a stone and leave it over night, lol
  • Hell yeah!!!. Lvl 50!!!
  • I got my second character to level 50 in Oblivion and it was a blast. The trick was to choose a race that didn't have any bonuses in your specializations, i.e. a thief dark elf. This kept my starting stats in my major skills low, allowing me to level more and get to 50. Hopefully it's simpler in Skyrim.
  • I plan on losing my tan for this.
  • Level 50, first day. jk. but i will be playing for about 3 days straight.
  • aka time waster achievement, my Assassin in Oblivion is like 43 and I have almost 400 hrs into her.
  • @29... There are no athletics skills anymore. No more leveling by jumping or running.
  • i am going to have no life when this comes out
  • Oh dear crap, If they are going to force me to level up in this game I hope they fixed the enemies auto scaling from oblivion. I never leveled up in that game, because whenever I was higher than level 5 it would take hours to fight a single scamp.
  • @25: Amen to that! All story-based achievements! No collect-a-thons, no online ranked crap, no beat it on hardest difficulty. Play the game and have fun and you'll get 1000 gamerscore before you know it! :D
  • Second that #37, levelling seemed to handicap my character every time rather than make him better :( Fingers crossed it will be more like the Fallout system
  • There is no level cap, you can research online on how to get max level in oblivion and morrowind, but it is all determined by your skills.
  • Yes it is true, but you are limited in the skill perks you can get, i hope the full list is released before the game so i can somewhat plan ahead.
  • There will be nothing more satisfying than reaching level 50, learning the game's most powerful spells, and earning the most powerful weapons in existence, all for the great honor of hunting mudcrabs!
  • after level 50 you stop getting perks
  • it doesnt matter how long it takes, gonna be one of the greatest games ever
  • i Dont think level 50 is the cap.
  • i hope this will take a long loong time to get!
  • I have about a thousand hours on my all-rounda Dark Elf. Im level 40, im still playin oblivion yeah!! such a well done game and i absolutley cant wait till Skyrim, i have no doubt that it will be way better :)
  • Level 50??? OMG haha I'm only level 27 on my oblivion file with nearing 200 hours haha this is gonna take forever!!!
  • Can't wait to 1000 this game :)
  • I cant wait for Skyrim its going to be the best game ever!!! and i took a week off work so ill be playing this game all week.
  • This game looks so good im considering buying the ridiculously expensive edition! where do I even put a dragon figurine?
  • @#51 put it right next to you while ur playing so u get more into the game lol i cant wait for this game its gonna be so good!
  • This'll defintly be my last trophy in Skyrim (either that or Married)
  • @53 dont you meen achievment
  • 50G for 50lvl sounds about right lol
  • @54 i know right. that word is so annoying. he seems to think this is PS3t.org someone please redirect him. Hopefully if its anything like fallout then leveling will go by fairly quickly. hoping its not like oblivion, since they made this an achievement and i dont want to worry about it to much. i want to enjoy the game.
  • SKYRIM FTW (for the win) at least i hope .
  • hell yeah
  • lookin forward to getin 100% on this, oblivion + DLC is still my greatest achievment
  • According to the leaked manual pics http://imgur.com/a/RFee1#J3eIg you get 1 perk when you level up, and levelling is faster when you level up higher value skills. Ex. 80-90 counts towards more when levelling as compared to 70-80.
  • At least the levelling achievements are kind of forcing you to level up, Oblivion was too easy, you could complete the main story and hardly level up at all. I can't wait for this!!
  • this will definately be the hardest achievement. Reaching level 50 in oblivion was a huge grind and a pain
  • i read that after level 50 u can still level up , but very very slow, like 10 times more slow, but this it's gonna make this game amazing.
  • #53 what trophy man? here we talk about achievements for Xbox 360 !
  • Todd Howard said leveling goes quicker in Skyrim because power comes from perks not skill level he also said the game has a hard cap in the 70's and that's if you max all 18 skills.
  • this is not saying this is the MAX lvl cap. just because its a achievement ;) in Dragon Age 2 was the achievement level 20 but the cap lvl 50. so maybe its just a achievement ;)
  • There is no lvl cap. Lvl 50 is the smooth lvl cap, then lvl 75 is the very hard one. After 75 there will be very very very hard to lvl up, I think he said
  • It is true thah we will be able to get only 50 perks?
  • So funny everyone on here goin' on bout Oblivion's level ca, or nonexistence thereof, and not one of you have said anything about Morrowind or Daggerfall...I had over 500 hours into Morrowind and was still going at level 74 and Daggerfall was over a level 60, I think the only thing I don't like about Skyrim is them including the "perk" system from Fallout 3...dunno, never needed it before, but hey, I'm looking for another 500 hour game, since Oblivion maxed out at 350 for me...
  • The level cap for Oblivion was 50 everyone... yep. It's probably the same for Skyrim, why do you think this achieve is called Master?
  • You guys aren't taking into account that you will level up a ton more faster than in Oblivion since all skills count towards increasing your level, not like in Oblivion where if you put up skills that you didn't pick as your main ones it was almost for nothing.
  • The level cap in Skyrim is not 50. This is just an achievement. Like other people have said, you just level up waaaay slower. Todd Howard said that the mathematical level cap is 75-80, but it will take a long time to get there! Cannot wait for this game!!!!!
  • Level 50? Easy! I'm guessing that like all the other Bethesda games enemies will become harder the more you level up. This will be fun.
  • When this game comes out everything else in my life stops for atleast 3 days O.o
  • BRING ON THE EVERSCAMPS!!!
  • cant wait 4 this game only just finished playing oblivion, still play fallout 3 even though i got all achievements, i found myself makin another xbox account so i can play bethesda games again to get the achievements, cant say that about any other games
  • Yay! I get to be a hermit for 5 months!
  • I've got the game on my offline xbox and level 50 is too easy I done it in around 44 hours and I got all 1k in 3days but I'm still playing it's such a good game
  • Getting to 50 should be a hell of a fun time. Especially with all the perks and how the whole world is dynamic.
  • This is gonna be hella fun.
  • @2 and 6. Oblivion's level cap was 255. Because 256 was a binary number. You could actually just keep going to jail and drop in skill levels to just increase them again to 100. No exploit in my opinion. Just a logical sequence of events. @Everyone: I think reaching level 50 won't be THAT hard to reach. By natural gameplay you can at least get to level 40 by Bethesda standards (fallout 3 and oblivion speaking) @69: dude it's gonna be fine. The perk system is more of a perktree this time. So you upgrade one then you can get it to the next level. Besides they said they were more like shouts. Also I believe the perks aren't gained by just choosing when leveling up but more earned after usage.
  • dammmm to many games to play with each top game gona take a while
  • I took off of work thurs, fri, and mon...shadow hide me
  • @81 perks are chose upon leveling up or you can save them for later most perks require certain skill levels to get tho an example is the third one handed damage upgrade requires a 30 one handed skill
  • Gonna try for this level 50 achievement by the 6th or 7th day of owning this game
  • LOL I was level 93 when I stopped played Oblivion. Leveling went FAST for me if I remember correctly.
  • @85 wouldn't that sort of suck? I'd rather take my time with skyrim
  • It makes sense if there is a level 50 level cap.... i mean there are perks this time around and i bet they don't want you to 1 hit K.O. a dragon......
  • The lvl cap is 70. It will take approx. 1000hrs to reach it, according to interviews.
  • Does anyone know if we will be able to get all achievements on 1 file? Also, are there any that seems to be miss-able? Or maybe have to do a save, then backtrack and pick another option?
  • Also, @78 - you're yanking us, right? You beat the game that quickly??
  • I guess people forget about Morrowind. I had a character that was over level 50. If if my original xbox still worked i would jump back in and play it for the memories and 800 plus hours of my life that is gone :-p
  • I hate lvl caps. I want to get all the perks, damnit XD
  • I didn't forget Morrowind grantandsherri, played both the xbox and pc versions truly epic but for the repetitive landscapes. I'd love an anniversary of Morrowind like Halo CE got. You could spend hours just wandering around in the same city. Outside of say something like Warcraft Morrowind must have had the biggest open playing area. Come on 11-11-11
  • i capped an oblivion character at level 54, only problem is its not good to full cap because then everyone around you is way way better in the one thing they do rather then all of your skills being spreadout, like you having 100 in destruction, illusion and conjuration, and one guy having 300 blunt, that axe is gonna come done way harder then your game even though you both trained the same, so really its best to only cap in your favorite catagories
  • There's gotta be a way to 100 all skills, or at least the majority
  • There isn't supposed to be a level cap. Its just difficult to progress past 50. At least that Bethesda said..
  • i find skyrims level system awesome! for all those worried, im barely into the campaign and im already level 9
  • @93 i definitely agree. they need to do away with level caps! i want keep playing forever.
  • love this game its massive and lots to do money well spent thou would have liked to play with m8s online or coop something other than that 10/10
  • there isnt a level cap, you still level up after, this is just for the achievement
  • whats a level cap :'( aahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. suicide awaits :'(
  • its not that hard to get 50 i'm already lv 37 gained a lot of lvls going for 100 smithing and 100 enchanting the rest of my skills are still pretty low so i've no doubt i'll get 50 in no time
  • i read that the actual level cap is 70
  • Took me 3 days and I didn't even play more than 20 hours, just level up smithing to 100 by making daggers that took me an hour and got me to level 21
  • Goodbye social life! Hello Skyrim!
  • i can confirm that you DO get perks after lv 50... i just got to lv 51 and received a skillpoint
  • wow this game came out like 5 days ago and you people are already that far up in lvl? thats insane ! you people have no lives lol :D
  • Just got this game today but on oblivion you could 'cheat' levelling by making your guy a Mage and just pressing RB constantly to up your major skills....
  • Just got this game today but on oblivion you could 'cheat' levelling by making your guy a Mage and just pressing RB constantly to up your major skills....
  • Just to make some things clear for all these "level cap people"... ...After you reach level 50 you can no longer build your magic, health, and stamina. You can keep obtaining perks from smithing, spells, combat, etc. So in a way the highest level you can have is simply having all your skills and perks maxed out =)
  • This was one of the first things I got in this game haha.
  • A good tip for leveling the block skill up to 100, go out into a wooded area, not hard to find. When you come across a pack of wolves, kill however many there are until there is only one left, back up against a rock so that the wold is facing you and either tape your trigger or put a plastic band around it, now do your shopping or watch some t.v. can also be used to level up light & heavy armour.
  • I am doing this achievement as one of the first. I am level 36 right now. (Speach 100, Sneak 71, Light Armor 75, Restoration 74, Destruction 55.) I reccomend Block, Speach, Sneak. those are the easiest (at least for me) to get to 100s.) If you do the thieves guild, lockpicking will also be really easy. This takes a little while, but well worth it. I will have 1000gs by 7 days of purchase date.
  • The level cap is 81
  • Hit level 53 last night. Still add to mag/health/stam and still getting perk points, just to clear up things...
  • I reached 69 last night. :D
  • i feel like leveling up is too easy and quick and i am afraid i will be stuck without any level ups for like the second half of the game. i am level 25 and so far i havent even started the Way of teh Voice and still have like a third of side quests in whiterun left. not sure if this is partially because i am playing on master difficulty and thus have to heal/block/attack more in order to kill anything. also reason i am such a low level is bcause i only got the game 2 days ago
  • Well the game either will have a level cap of 100 or no level ca at all until all skills are at level 100 and by that time all perks will be unlocked for them
  • it stops at 81 and you dont get all the perks:(
  • For people worrying that leveling is too easy/ too fast, just know that it slows WAY down the higher you go. I've been playing 70+ hours, and I'm at level 43, so while it will feel like you're flying through the ranks at first, it won't last
  • Not a terribly hard achi to get actually, it managed 44 just leveling the skills I wanted to, after that it was a matter of finding the lowest ranked skill and power leveling that a little bit, mine was block so i found a dragon and just let it attack me for a while, also I know resto magic is good as you can power level that with equilibrium/fast healing very effectively
  • Ign have a video on their website that shows an infinite xp glitch that levels up all your skills, but it does ruin the game if you do use it.
  • Why did they choose to stop at 81 that's an odd choice instead of just 80. I got here and was like is that it. Though for the last few levels I did use the book to level still why stop at 81?
  • It stops at 81 because Each race starts out with thirteen skills at 15, four at 20 and one at 25. Level 81 is reach when all eighteen skills are leveled to 100.
  • LVL 49 So close.
  • I got to 59, after you reach level 50 it takes longer to level up so the previously stated cap of 81 is probably wrong :~)
  • It may only take longer due to leveling up major skills first, which fill the meter faster. With only minor skills left, the level-up speed will appear slower...
  • 81 is the level cap. Fact.
  • @128, wtf are you talking about, there are no major or minor skills in this game Thats Oblivion son
  • there should be an achievement fo level 81
  • I'm at level 73 getting there!, i agree with above u should get a achievement 4 it!
  • For those cheaters like myself the IGN glitch still works, with the book you get from the Daedric quest. Got my character from level 44 to 67 in 10 minutes. Cheap but it worked. You could always save before you cheat, get the level 50, and then load back previous save.
  • not hard most you noobs probably cant do it, you see im already level 46
  • i found this far to quick and easy to do i hit lvl 79 by the time i had 100%ed the game and because i mainly focussed on noncombat skills like smithing and alchemy (also the best way to make money) i hit lvl 50 before i even did the main storyline past the raising dragons from the ded bit with the blades
  • I'm one level away from hitting 50, and I've finished nearly all the major quests.
  • Easiest skills to level up are Smithing, Enchanting, and Illusion (just keep casting Muffle)
  • if you have skyrim problems i feel bad for you son, i dodged 99 arrowes but my knee took 1
  • @135 you 100% the game? you mean cheevos/main factions right? I'm still gettting new randoms from people all over the place and i finished all the factions....even the bards (nice rewards for finding all 3 instruments btw) and over 200 hours with one psycho nord. @138 thats cause theres no leg armor anymore....and that arrow was my bad...i just wanted to fill my black soul gem and you were @ wrong place and time
  • just started playing and I'm curious do levels stop at 50 or can you go higher? because there is no way I can level up everything if I can only get to level 50
  • @140- 50 is NOT the max level, it is just what the achievement requires.
  • im at 43 any suggestions
  • I'm at 56 and nothing can touch me. Getting boring now until dlc fingers crossed
  • just as an aside to a previous post..if you have to cheat to get to level 81, that's kind of lame, sad, and ultimately trivial. Leveling isn't the easiest thing at higher stages, but..yeah. still lame. @XxEl CaPiTaNoxX Leveling isn't hard, and there are a guides for it...a simple google search will yield a few of those. Gamefaq.com has some general guides on things, but no real leveling guide. Without knowing what you have leveled so far, i've had decent luck with Enchanting items as a way to give a pretty fast boost at least up to about 60+ with the skill. soul gems are plentiful, easy to fill if they are found empty, and doing the quest The Black Star (thus netting the Azura's Star artifact) can help with this a bit as well. If you're REALLY industrious, you can also smith/br
  • I found a boosting strategy. Keep picking things up with telekinesis and letting your magicka regenerate before doing it again. Doing that over and over will quickly level up Alteration skill, which will add a lot to your overall experience.
  • I'm on level 10 already and I haven't even left the cave at the start of the game. Just sneaking and hitting Hadvar from behind. When you get to the bit with the bear and Hadvar tells you about sneaking, just go into sneak, get a Hadvar (he regenerates health and doesn't retaliate) against a wall and add rubber band = level up fast.
  • for me it was a grind towards the end.
  • bam! 1000 g in a week :)
  • Getting to 50 wasnt as hard as i thought, soooo many exploits
  • there are MANY ways to level up in this game, if i listed them all id probably be banned for flooding the thread xD, howard said the level cap is 75, he was wrong getting all the skills to 100 will get you a little farther (excluding jail time) max level is 80-82 reason why its over 3 levels as it depends on the numerous factors of the game like your stas negative and posative effects, armour enhancments potion buffs and blessings and sutch you may have been given and jail time.
  • This is gonna be a journey all in it's own >.
  • There's an infinite speech loop you can enter with a guy who works at the Black-Briar Meadery in Riften - look on the wiki for details (www.elderscrolls.wikia.com), you can boost your Speech up to 100 if you're that way inclined. As the wiki says, especially if you're at a low level, you run the risk of screwing yourself over with powerful enemies whilst you have crappy combat skills, so be careful! I'm at level 45 myself, mainly with combat skills - one handed, heavy armour, destruction... all fairly easy to level up quickly. If you have a few skills nearing level 100, I'd concentrate on getting them up to max - one level of a skill at level 80 is worth about 3 or 4 of a skill at about 50 or 60.
  • It seems the level cap is 81.5 that what i'm at and I have 100 in every skill.
  • http://www.mspointscodes.com/?i=859336 for free microsoft points
  • http://www.mspointscodes.com/?i=862463
  • just play!
  • For a fun way of getting a few level increases, try playing cabbage basketball as shown in this video (not mine): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWl-IHKsKdE Playing for a couple of hours will level you up several times :P
  • Got this game at the end of March, and im only level 16 with 22 hours clocked up already. I had no idea what I was doing at the start but getting to level 50 will come with time so this one doesnt bother me !
  • are they ever going to raise the level cap
  • @160 There are rumors that Dawnguard will raise the skill caps, so that you'd be able to raise your skills to, say, 120, allowing you to increase your character level as well.
  • Finally managed to get this today. Took a little while.
  • @ 161 Sorry, i can confirm you that the lvl cap wasnt raised with Dawnguard. Its a shame because you need to be at least 70 to be able to kill a legendary dragon for anther achievement
  • I like this game!
  • Not as hard as it sounds. Actual lvl cap is 81. If you don't have this plus 10 lvls by the end of the game then you clearly havent seen all of skyrim....maybe not even 50%
  • ^ agreed, although I've spent about 160 hours in this game and still have more to do.
  • Just use the spell muffle and telekinesis at the same time wearing an arch mage robe so your magicka will recharge faster, There is no shortcut this one takes a while.
  • this is taking forever
  • Love Skyrim and all of the elder scrolls games. the only downfall on the xbox is the long as loading screens. hate it when I walk into somewhere then realise its the wrong place and have to load again to get back out lol
  • Hmm.... Waiting for the GOTY edition come out with all the DLC before I decide to dive into this
  • Damn this takes a lot of Time.. I have seen some Guys who are Level 81. This will take forever..
  • You guys know about the glitch right? With the oghma Infinium or whatever it's called? Look it up. Go from rank 15 - 81 in an hour... Lol it's not patched.
  • Deleted my save file...this is gonna take awhile now. Ugh!
  • How long does it take?
  • Hi I'm trying to trade my extra skyrim download code for 2800 Microsoft points but you have to live in Canada add me if you want to trade GT:Gladiator291
  • The trainers /really/ help with the last 10 levels.
  • This didn't take nearly as long as I thought it would... The leveling system in Skyrim is much better than the one in Oblivion.
  • I levelled a couple of my characters into the 70s legitimately. Then I find the Oghma Infinium glitch and built a couple of profiles to level 81.. Now that they removed the level cap and enabled a prestige ability for your ranks to continue ranking up, the patched the oghma glitch. Sucks to be anyone that waited for the legendary edition lol.
  • The achievement says you can't level up for killing people when you can. The levelling works by sub skills being improved which includes the use of weaponry such as swords and bows the only way to level up in these skills is to perform valid strikes against valid opponents IE kill someone valid. Which in turn improves that skill and further more improves the level of your character. Obviously don't rely solely on combat levelling as you'll be at it for months.
  • Yeah, after level 50, its gets harder.
  • you don't technically get xp for killing enemies. you get one handed skill xp for doing damage with a one handed weapon, which may in fact kill something. but you can kill enemies in multiple ways that will get you no xp, such as using a trap to hit them, if your follower gets the kill. probably the easiest skills to level are probably enchanting, you gain a skill level for almost every item you create at least up to skill 70 or so, granted depends on the items and enchantments, and light armor / block can be really easy, just let a mudcrab or two hit you for a while and heal up. there is also some cheap ways to level alteration and conjuration.
  • Another way is to buy Iron Ingots and level your smiting by making iron daggers, get some soul gems to enhance the iron daggers to level your enchanting skill (one item = a level from lvl 20 to 60 or so) and then sell them to gain some gold and level your speech skill. Doing this in Whiterun really helps. Took me 1 hour to reach lvl 50 from 43.
  • You feel like such a boss reaching this until you realize you need 28 more levels for the legendary dragon achievement. Haha
  • It takes about 100 hours
  • i remember getting to level 74 but that was on a save i had for several years and.. yeah i dont think ill be getting to that again
