Craft an item out of Stalhrim

  • How to unlock Stalhrim Crafter

Stalhrim is a new material introduced in Dragonborn. To craft weapons and armor with this material you must first be able to mine it, then be able to craft it.

To mine Stalhrim, you will need an ancient nordic pickaxe, that you can acquire from the Raven Rock blacksmith, Glover Mallory. It was stolen from him and he asks you to retrieve it from Crescius Caerellius. This is a simple and short task and upon returning to Glover Mallory, he will allow you to keep it.

To be able to craft Stalhrim weapons and armor you will need to be taught how to do it by the Skaal village blacksmith named, Baldor Iron-Shaper.

Before you go looking for him, you must first finish a quest in Skaal village from the town leader, Fanari Strong-Voice, who will task you with taking out a bandit leader. After you have completed this, ask around town until someone tells you about the blacksmith who has gone missing. This will then activate a mission for you to go and rescue him from his kidnappers who are trying to get his secrets to crafting with Stalhrim.

When you have rescued him, he will ask you to go and retrieve a map from a newly arrived Thalmor leader, which shows Stalhrim locations on Solstheim. After you retrieve this map and take it back to Baldor Iron-Shaper, he will finally share his secrets to crafting Stalhrim, allowing you to create Stalhrim weapons and armor.

As soon as you create your first item the achievement will unlock.

*Note. You will need to have at least a level 80 in Blacksmithing and the perk to be able to craft Ebony to be able to craft with Stalhrim.

  • looks like a alchemy ingredient from bloodmoon :D http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Raw_Stalhrim
  • Shut up.
  • On the same page it shows Stalhrim armor, so I'm hoping for that as alchemy is really weak in this game.
  • Where is the ancient nordic pickaxe?
  • Nevermind, the marker just showed up on the map.
  • You need to have the perk to make ebony to make stahlrim.
  • stalhrim armors are actually better then dragon and deadric armors! the bow too is better. only problem is stalhrim is rare so mine everything you find and buy it everytime it is available. btw, You can buy the nordic pickaxe from the skaal blacksmith. can also buy some stalhrim armors and weapons in case you are out of minerals.
  • The forge doesn't even give me the option to make Stalhrim stuff.
  • you have to learn it from the Skaal blacksmith and it is only after you save him from the Thalmar.
  • rofl this whole time i was looking for flora. i feel shamed
  • Im not sure what i havent done, but the blacksmith never goes "missing". I have beat the main storyline for the DLC. I only have 3 cheevos left on the DLC as well (one being this one)WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? I have came and went to the Skaal Village numerous times. Any ideas? I have plenty of Stahlrim to use up
  • i think this quest to save the smithy happen before the village leader dies reading the black book as he mention that he saw 2 elf dragging something away the day before. however, i am not 100% sure the leader is the one saying that. I just know i wanted stahlrim armor as early as possible and didn't do much of main quest up until i got it.
  • To unlock the ability to forge Stahlrim you need to return the nordic pickaxe to the Blacsmith in Ravenrock and then head to Skaal Village where you will be asked to rescue the blacksmith of the town. Once done you'll be able to create Stahlrim.
  • Forgive me! I'm an idiot. After reading your comments again I suddenly realized I am way to stoned and should keep my fingers of the keyboard.... Sorry!
  • Howcome the people in skaal not moving? The 3 were just meditating, the kid was the only one moving. Do you need to finish the temple of misraak in order to do the blacksmith quest?
  • Where can you find stalhrim?
  • #15, you need to do the quest temple of miraak, that open up a lot of future quest lines cuz if you don't, well at least 4 or 5 achivo you'll never get. #16, stalhrim is rare, found only 4 or 5 deposit until the blacksmith in Skaal give you a location where there are 10 deposits that you can do over every few days(game time)...
  • ok thx
  • So what if the blacksmith has always been there? I never had to find him but he's there at the forge. When I speak with him it only gives me the option to buy stuff. This has to be a glitch. It BS too!!
  • #19, you are not far enough in the story yet or need do more sidequest from that village. you guys are really in a hurry to get these stahlrim weapons and armors :)
  • I am done with the DLC main quest and have done all the quests in the Skaal village and most other side quests as well. This is my last achievement (I still have to ride one more dragon).
  • Thank you #17
  • #19 #21 I agree, I have done the all the quests(28) + side quests that I can find (except the east empire pendants), all achievements except this. When I was in raven rock I could ask people about stalhrim but not in skaal village. If only I could simply ask him to teach me. The question is , is it a glitch or missable ?
  • Deor Woodcutter(name?) died in my game while I was freeing the Skaal. I think with him dead the quest does not trigger. I have done everything I can find, and the blacksmith does not get kidnapped. I think Woodcutter is the one who tells you of the kidnaping, so with him gone, it won't start. I think this is the problem, I've seen a few others online that can't get this achivement, too. I hopee I'm mistaken or it gets fixed:(
  • ok i have redone this with a 2nd save, everything start when you are ask to recover a nordic pickaxe by the raven rock blacksmith. then i did temple of miraak then i used shout on stone to free skaal people, quest from Frea i think then i went to their village and was intercepted by a villager to help find their missing blacksmith. i saved him from 4 thalmar then he asked me to recover something from the thalmar boss in the north on his boat once that done, the blacksmith showed me to use stalhrim. hope this help a little, if not, well i tried :)
  • Ask Deor about Baldor's Disappearance this is the quest name to go free the skall blacksmith in the miscellaneous section. it lead to learning stahlrim crafting. If Deor died earlier, you will not be able to do this. if the quest does not start when you go to skaal village, travel back and forth a few times between skyrim and solsteim, this has helped my friend get the quest started. you need ebony crafting to do stahlrim crafting and no worry if you are lvl 81 and have no spare skill points to learn ebony crafting, at the end, you are allowed to reset your skill points for 1 dragon soul...
  • I contacted Bethesda an he told me that if ANY of the Skaal NPCs are killed you have to revert to a previous save as the quest will never activate. I think one of them was killed when I was cleansing the Wind Stone. It sucks that I had to go back but I eventually got the achievement.
  • great lol my saves are way back as i done the whole thing in one sitting lol
  • @27 that's what I thought, oh well:( thanks for letting us know.
  • @26 Thank you for letting me know about the chance to reset my perks. I'm level 81 and was convinced I was going to miss out on this achievement.
  • Can you still get it if the leader of skaal (the one that sacrifices himself) dies?
  • Yea i killed most of the skaal cuz they attacked me for some reason :/ now i have to make a new character.
  • #31, the leader has to sacrifice himself, so he dies no matter what and this does not interfere with the quest for stalhrim. however killing or not saving any other Skaal people will prevent you from getting this achievement.
  • Ok thx I was wondering that. This was very helpful.
  • Got Email back from Bethesda stating that there is no timescale on patch to fix this issue of NPC missing, implying a patch is likely.
  • I just clicked on the woodcutter in skaal village and my only option to say to him was 'who's missing?' and that started the quest for me
  • yeah all i get is the female learder and the woodcutter standing at the back of the village. I ask who is missing and she sends me to talk to him, but all he says is "ash from the red mountain made the land sick" get no quest update from him
  • is the place you rescue him from random, or a fixed location, because iof its a fixed location and he is missing cant you just go their and rescue him?
  • @35 cheers for info i have tried everythink to start quest and i over wrote my save b4 sorting out the wind stone i never thought it would b an issue.
  • Yeah I completed the nordic pickaxe side wuest, the temple of miraak and used the shout on the windstone. No one has gone missing from Skaal. And i went through the entire black book number one, killed everything, looted everything and have not received any respec token at all. What's going on? People are saying they get new powers from these black books and I get nothing. And as far as no one from the town dying, it is nearly impossible to have no one die when you shout at the wind stone and the lurker rises. He swings almst immediatly and bashed idiots to death in one second. This DLC is really starting to frustrate me.
  • agree wit h#40 but if you have the bow and arrow slow down time perks its a little easier. Slow time just as the lurker starts to rise and you can put a couiple of sneak shot arrows into his head and drop him before he spits out bile
  • If you want to know where to get alot of stahlrim, check this location http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0ebXkC2voM
  • Deor Woodcutter wont even give me any dialog, apparently on the wiki if you attempt to talk to them before they are finished talking it fucks it. I may have dont but I dont know if I did or not. So fucking pissed off, gotta do so much for such an easy achievement, and I dont want my character without that smithing ability. Finaly some half decent looking weapons and armor.
  • Heads up everyone i contacted Bethesda and after trial and error found out that you have to do the quest before the Shaman sacrifices himself in the main story line. None of the skaal can die when you cleanse the wind stone, and you dont need to cleanse the tree stone (a couple of skaal are fixing it) but you need to do the Temple of Mirrak quest and the fate of the skaal quest beforee it unlocks. Also you do not need ot do the pickaxe quest in Raven Rock, the blacksmith has the nordic pickaxes for sale before and after he disappears. Also you need to have found the abandoned trading post before hand (its northeast of Raven rock) and then you can get the quest.
  • #44, I got the quest to retrieve the missing blacksmith after the Shaman sacrificed himself in the main story. I am pretty sure he isn't a necessary NPC.
  • This bites I am down to to my last three Chevos, this being one and I have tried everything to get the blacksmith to go missing. I have done all the side quests for the village and never get the dialogue for the quest.... At this point it looks like I will have have start a new character....
  • 44 is right, you need to find the trading post first, and then fast travel to the village and the two people will be discussing his disappearance.
  • This one eluded me at first, because you need to be able to work ebony. So I had to start a new character that worked heavy mail as blacksmithing. Very annoying trying to level up again enough to do this quest. lol
  • It takes age to do -_-
  • *Ages
  • #6, Nice gamerpic :D
  • I returned the pickaxe, completed the temple of miraak, and freed the wind stone. you wait out of the village for a few in game days then talk to a woman talking to someone around where the shaman was making the barrier then talk to the man she was talking to about a disappearance and the quest begins
  • Its the last achievement i need on dragonborn and it wont work D:
  • #53 do you have the ability to craft ebony
  • Had to do this several times. Major pain. Correct order (for me at least): -Level your character in Skyrim to somewhere in the 20-30 range, minimum, training your Smithing perk as you go. Smithing must be at 80, since a prereq for working with Stalhrim is being able to work with ebony (perk unlocks at 80). -Travel to Stalhrim -Talk to the town blacksmith and retrieve his pickaxe, which he'll let you keep. -Talk to people in the town to get a quest marker for the Temple of Miraak. -Travel to the temple and assist the villager in clearing it. -Follow her back to the village and talk to her father. -Go learn the 'Bend Will' Shout. -Release the villagers from the Wind Stone, being careful to keep EVERY villager alive. -Return to the village and complete the quest. -Fast travel back a
  • cut me off... -Fast travel back and forth between the village and Raven Rock a few times, until you see two villagers (one is the Woodcutter) talking about someone going missing. -Talk to the Woodcutter, who will tell you where to find the missing Blacksmith. -Kill the elves guarding the Blacksmith and free him (he's in the basement). -Travel to the elves' boat and convince them to leave (or kill them). -Obtain Stalhrim from the small, unmarked island just northeast of their boat, if you don't already have some. -Return the map to the blacksmith and he'll show you how to use Stalhrim. -Craft a Stalhrim weapon and get that 20 GS. Long, easy-to-screw-up chievo, that's for sure.
  • Here's what happened to me; I completed the main questline for the dragon born dlc, got an ancient Nordic picaxe, re-opened the mine, and went to the skall village. Their leader told me to talk to Deor about someone who has gone missing but when I try to talk to him, the conversation doesn't start. I don't know if it's glitched or if I missed my chance. Any help?
  • Did they fix this in the new 1.9 patch? I put the game in and I still can not get the quest to start for the missing blacksmith in skall village....
  • I wish they would fix this. I killed the wood cutter not realizing it was part of the quest and had saved after? finishing the dlc. Its the last achievement I need.
  • Dammit! I made smithing legendary before starting dlc! Gonna have to boost it to 80 again now, at least I've got plenty of assorted ingots, leather and gems stashed back at my house in Whiterun!
  • listen guys i made an account because nobody seemed to really have what i needed ( i did skim through some of it) so here is what is happening 1. I finished this DLC the whole main quest is done 2. I have done everything for the blacksmith in Raven Rock 3. I can talk to skaal leader but not to deor woodcutter as they just kind of sit there 4. I have killed the bandits for the skaal I still after all of that do not get the option to even talk to Deor Woodcutter so if anyone can help that would be great I just want this Stahlrim armour
  • Does anyone know of a quick way to level up your smithing?
  • Cheeus Krist! achievement is lame. I'm not gonna even bother because I didn't know that dude was not supposed to die and I'm only level 30 at smithing.
  • I havn't bothered with this one. It glitched on my playthrough and i honestly can't be bothered to start again just for one achievement.
  • @#1: True, true. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Stalhrim_Weapons_%28Bloodmoon%29
  • #63 make iron daggers?
  • This is one fucking ball ache of an achievement. So much shit to do just to make a weapon I don't even want. I got a glitch due to a dead characted so have to load an earlier save and do the DLC again.
  • I have level 100 smithing, have finished everything in the dlc and the main game, i only need four more achievements to finish it, but the blacksmith never goes missing and I've had this profile for a long time, what can I do? I've done every side quest for the village, i really don't want to have to start a whole new game (i cleared all my old save files cause they really started to add up after multiple characters) to get this one cause getting to Ebony smithing is a pain in the ass, any ideas i can try before I start the long process over?
