Introduction:
“LEGO Brawls is the first team action brawler set in the LEGO universe; a light-hearted, casual-competitive brawler the whole family can enjoy! Build your own minifigure hero and brawl to the top in this multiplayer, brick-bashing platformer inspired by iconic LEGO sets and themes! Battle solo or with family and friends! Collect minifigures and power-ups, combine them to create your ultimate brawler, and climb to the top of the global leaderboard.” - bandainamcoent.com
Note: The introductory/tutorial match when you start the game for the first time does not count towards any achievements.
Originally released for mobile devices through the Apple Arcade in 2019, this game is not much more than a port of the original game. Similar to games such as Super Smash Bros., Brawlhalla and MultiVersus, it is your most basic of platform fighters. The gameplay is simplistic yet somewhat chaotic and doesn’t require any real skill; you can just pick it up and play. The game also offers a number of LEGO-licensed themes and various game modes for you to enjoy.
Note that cross play between all platforms is enabled and cannot be turned off, so when you play online, you’ll be playing against people that are on Xbox One and Series X|S, Windows 10, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, as well as mobile devices.
Step 1 - Create and Customize Brawler/Loadout:
There are three achievements we can get out of the way immediately, and that is for customizing a brawler, customizing a loadout, and creating three custom brawlers. Refer to Fashionista (20G), Mechanic (20G), and Custom Built (25G) below for simple and quick solutions.
Step 2 - Brawl/Party/Top Brawler:
Each brawler, while you can change their appearance, has the exact same melee abilities, so there is no advantage between players. Only by picking up a Powerup can you perform a special attack, but they don’t last very long. Thus, playing Brawl mode may not be ideal for unlocking the ‘Top Brawler’ and ‘Win 5 Consecutive Matches’ achievements.
While you will be playing a lot of Brawl matches to master the six champions, there is a guaranteed way to unlock the ‘Play’, ‘Top Brawler’, and ‘Win’ achievements quickly, which is outlined in Winning Streak (100G). If you follow that process, you will unlock all 9 of those achievements in about 30 minutes.
Step 3 - Master Champion:
This is where you will be spending the bulk of your time. You will be playing a lot of Brawl matches with the goal of mastering three abilities (special attacks) for each of the six unlocked champions.
After you unlock a champion, select it for each match you play. During the match, locate and break the square Powerup brick for a random special attack. If you are lucky enough to get one of the three needed for your champion, using it and inflicting damage towards enemy brawlers will count towards mastering it. Each champion will take an hour or so to master depending on your playstyle, so for more detailed information, refer to NRG Nya (75G).
Conclusion:
Don’t get me wrong, LEGO Brawls is an enjoyable game, but since it is clearly a mobile port, it lacks content. The developer and publisher put no extra effort into making the game better by incorporating more content and better functionality for consoles, and charging $40 USD for it is almost laughable. But, it is what it is.
Since every brawler is identical, there is no clear point in ranking up other than obtaining a shiny new medal (which also serves no purpose). There is no icon identification on the results or creation screens, and when a match is chosen, it doesn’t clearly tell you what you are playing (Control Point, Brawl Royale, Collect Mode). Also, the achievement list seems somewhat uninspired; there is nothing for 100% completing a theme or multiple themes, unlocking some or all featured champions, or winning a certain number of specific game modes. Other than grinding to master all the champions, there really isn’t any reason to play beyond earning all the achievements.
Despite these flaws, LEGO Brawls is a decent game, albeit somewhat bare. Hopefully, in time, the developer will add more content, themes, and minifigs to unlock to entice players to keep returning to this game.
