Introduction:
Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor introduces players to the grand Lord of the Rings universe when Talion, a brave Ranger of Gondor, defies death with the help from a vengeful Wraith. His newfound purpose is to find and stop Sauron and exact revenge on the Dark Lord’s army of Uruk that get in his way. The game is presented in an open world format that can be freely explored at your own pace. While the main narrative only lasts around ten hours, there is more than enough side content waiting to be unlocked and explored. Achievement wise, most of your time will be radically split between experiencing the story missions and side missions, as well as completing two sets of challenges, hunting down two sets of unique collectibles and working on some extremely entertaining miscellaneous tasks that revolve around the game’s stealth mechanics, free-flow combat, and Nemesis System. Overall, you will need to dedicate around thirty or more hours over a single playthrough in order to see the game complete.
Main Story + Side Missions:
While there is no suggested or recommended order in how to tackle the main story missions and additional side missions during the course of your playthrough, there are several achievements related to these tasks that should be recognized before powering through the game. Keep in mind that Talion’s three weapons each have ten side missions that must be completed. Thus, completing all the Bow missions unlocks both "Legend of the Maker" and "The Maker’s Bow", while "Legend of Shadow" and "The Last Shadow" are related to the completing the Dagger missions and "Legend of Vengeance" and "Fire of Justice" are related to finishing up all the Sword missions. What’s more, completing a single Outcast Rescue mission will unlock "The Free Folk" and completing all twenty-four will unlock the "Liberator" achievement. Make sure to also focus on "Black Celebration" during a Feast side mission and Repaid in Blood during a Vendetta side mission.
As for the game’s main story missions, "You Will Obey" and "The Bright Master" will unlock extremely early on in the game without much effort on your part. The secret achievements of "Gorthaur the Cruel", "Beyond Hope", "To Rule them All", "Ratbag the Great and Powerful", "The White Wizard", "The Hand is Severed", "For My Brother", "The Tower Crumbles" and "The Hammer Falls" are all story-related and will unlock as you naturally progress through the game's storyline.
Captain & Warchief Objectives:
There are a great number of achievements related to manipulating the game’s brilliant Nemesis System and targeting different Uruk Captains and Warchiefs in certain ways. In total, there are ten achievements related to this segment of the game and while none of them are missable, it is best to plan them out early as working on them late in the game will prove to be tedious and challenging. Right off the bat, "Iron of Death", "A New Master" and "No Power in Numbers" are all related to specific acts against Uruk Captains and they all will probably come naturally as you advance through the storyline. On the other hand, "Stinking Rebels", "The Spirit of Mordor", "Lord and Master", "Divide and Conquer", "Power Vacuum" and "A Graug’s Heel" are all related to Uruk Warchiefs and will prove to be much more tasking than the previous three achievements. Finally, "Rise and Fall" is one of the most complicated achievements of the bunch because there’s three specific steps involved and there lies a great possibility of error when working on it. Remember, none of these achievements here are missable, but try to get them done sooner rather than later!
Collectibles & Challenges:
During your playthrough, you will want to focus your attention on the vast amount of collectibles and challenges presented in the game. Collectibles in Mordor are broken down into two distinct categories: Artifacts and Ithildin. Collecting the artifacts will unlock both "Paths of the Dead" and "Shadows of the Ancient Past" while "Crowned with Living Light" and "Bearer of the Shining Lamp" will unlock once all the Ithildin are discovered. Make sure to also discover all the Forge Towers across the different regions of Mordor, as doing so will unlock the "Memories of Eregion" achievement. Lastly, there are two types of challenges to tackle; these are Survivalist and Hunter challenges. The former tasks players with hunting down different types of herbs, while the later revolves around hunting down different creatures and beasts roaming around the open world. Completing all the Survivalist challenges will net both "Scout of Morannon" and "Ranger of Ithildin" while completing all the Hunter challenges will unlock the "Thrill of the Hunt" and "Master of the Wilds" achievements.

Mop-Up:
If at any point in your adventure you have missed a particular achievement, do not hesitate in referring to the guide below in order to complete the remaining objectives at hand. Chances are, some of these missable achievements will be related to collectibles, challenges, and miscellaneous tasks, so you will definitely want to roam around Mordor post-game to get these done. None of the achievements in the game are missable which means you can go back and work on anything at any point in the game.
Lord of the Hunt DLC
Main Story + Side Missions:
As soon as the story begins, Talion and Torvin's adventure will spring into action. After the first story mission has been completed, "A Short Introduction" will unlock and several story missions – represented by gold icons - will appear on the world map. Like the main game, these can be completed in whichever order you’d prefer. The main story missions here involve luring out the various Beastmaster Warchiefs in different ways so that Talion can finally put them down once and for all. After all five Warchiefs have been eliminated via the main story missions, "The Most Dangerous Game" will unlock.
During the story mission entitled “Matrons Rising,” try to set a Ghul Matron on fire with Talion’s Flame of Askar ability. There are about three Ghul Matrons in this mission, so there are plenty of chances in getting this done. If successfully pulled off, you will unlock the "Hot Flashes" achievement. Additionally, during the story mission entitled “Hypocritical Oath,” you will more than likely naturally unlock "O Mother, Where Art Thou?" as you are dominating vast amounts of Ghuls in Nurn. Make sure to attempt "Ghûls Gone Wild" at the end of this mission by dispatching your branded Ghuls while they are attacked the stunned Wretched Graug.
Finally, side missions - represented by white icons - are necessary in order to unlock one of the game’s new abilities. As always, make note that some of these side missions will not be available until you progress through the main story. Completing the first four of these side missions will unlock the final side mission, where "The Flames Make It Go Faster" can be unlocked after activating the new Blazing Steed ability.
Captain & Warchief Objectives:
Unlike the main game, there aren’t too many achievements directly tied to the Uruk Warchiefs and Captains in Nurn. In fact, there are only two achievements that require you to harm or kill Uruk Captains in a specific way and they can both be unlocked at the same time. After completing the story mission entitled “Unwarranted Aggression,” you will be in a perfect position to begin working on "Wretched Retch." This will unlock after spitting a Graug's projectile vomit on a Uruk Captain. Additionally, "Nom Nom Nom!" can be achieved shortly after by eating the very same Uruk Captain with the Wretched Graug. Take note that these achievements can be done at any point in your playthrough so long “Unwarranted Aggression” has been completed.
Miscellaneous Tasks:
There are several achievements that are not directly tied to the story and side missions. For example, killing twenty-five Uruk with a Caragath’s stealth attack will unlock "Jaws of Death", while performing an execution or “mount kill” attack on a Caragath will unlock "I Had To Put Him Down." As for "Rattle the Hive," this will more than likely unlock naturally over time as you bait Ghul mounds a total of ten times during your playthrough. Lastly, "The Collector," one of the more tedious achievements in the expansion, will only unlock after you have a dominated Caragath, Wretched Graug and Spitter Ghul simultaneously. This should probably be attempted after the main story missions are complete, so that you are familiar with where certain Graug baits and Ghul mounds spawn around the region of Nurn.
Test of the Wild:
In this new trial, accessed via the Main Menu’s Trials of War, players will be tasked with eliminating all five Warchiefs and twenty Captains in Nurn. In order to unlock "The Hunt is My Mistress", players will undergo the seemingly impossible task of completing this main objective in forty minutes, while using monsters to kill at least ten of the Captains, all while amassing thirteen-thousand points during the playthrough. This achievement is incredibly hard compared to the rest of the expansion and may take multiple attempts to obtain this achievement. with enough persistence and knowledge of the game’s core combat, coupled with the strategy provided in the achievement guide below, players should be able to obtain it in just a few hours.
The Bright Lord DLC
(Full G&RM Found Here)
Introduction to The Bright Lord DLC:
Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor’s The Bright Lord is the game's second and final major downloadable expansion that brings players back to the region of Udun as the Elven ring maker, Celebrimbor. Set few thousands years before the main campaign, players will guide Celebrimbor through Sauron's disciplined Uruk Captains and Warchiefs as the Eleven warrior finally confronts the Dark Lord. Packed with new abilities and higher leveled enemies, this expansion will last average players about three to four hours for all but one achievement. One of the new Trial of Wars, Test of the Ring, is a rather tasking challenge in this expansion that asks players to eliminate all the a majority of the Uruk presences in Udun under a specific set of strict constraints. With enough dedication and practice, this expansion can be completed in about four to eight hours.
Main Story + Side Missions:
As soon as the story begins, Celebrimbor will be frantically ambushed by a group of Uruk grunts. After defeating these enemies and completing the next two sets of objectives, "The Scouring of Mordor" will unlock and several story missions – represented by gold icons - will appear on the world map. Like the main game, these can be completed in whichever order you’d prefer. The main story missions here involve luring out the various Elite Warchiefs in different ways so that Celebrimbor can dominate their minds and turn them against Sauron. After completing the final boss fight in the mission entitled The True Lord of the Rings, "Betrayed" will unlock.
During this playthrough, there will be three main story missions that involve rebuilding the Forge Towers of Udun by luring out and eliminating the Uruk Captains that reside in the area. These missions are short and simple, and upon completing all three, "Eregion Reforged" will be yours.
Lastly, the side missions - represented by white icons - are necessary in order to maximize the power of Celebrimbor's new One Ring ability. As always, make note that some of these side missions will not be available until you progress through the main story. Completing all four of these side missions will unlock "Battle Forged." As a final note, make sure to complete all the side missions before starting the final mission, as you cannot return to Udun post-game to free-roam.
Miscellaneous Tasks:
There are several achievements that are not directly tied to the story and side missions. For example, Shadow Branding twenty Uruk will unlock "Burning Shadow," while branding fifty Uruk through Celebrimbor's new Wraith Flash Domination ability will unlock "Dominion." As for "From Shadow to Shadow," this will require a bit of planning in order to Stealth Brand an Uruk Captain. Lastly, "The Silver Fist," one of the more difficult miscellaneous achievements, will unlock after dominating twenty Uruk grunts in under sixty seconds. This is best done inside an Uruk Stronghold while overwhelmed by large mobs with a fully charged One Ring gauge.
Test of the Ring:
In this new trial, accessed via the Main Menu’s Trials of War, players will be tasked with eliminating five Warchiefs and twelve Captains in Udun. In order to unlock "Lord of the Ring," players will be faced with a few easy tasks of completing this main objective in sixty minutes, while Branding at least fifty Grunts (non-Captain and non-Warchief Uruk) during the playthrough and finishing with the eight of the twenty Captains Branded. Compared to the previous DLC Trial, this achievement is - while still somewhat luck-based - very easy. Lastly, though it might prove to be a tad confusing, obtaining a Level 30 Rune in the Test of the Ring will unlock the "Beyond Epic" achievement.
Conclusion to The Bright Lord DLC:
Overall, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor’s The Bright Lord expansion is a wonderful way to give insight towards Celebrimbor's story arc. The new abilities presented are satisfying to utilize within combat and the final boss fight against Sauron trumps all previous boss fights in the core game. With a nice mix of ten achievements, everything can be completed in just four to eight hours for experienced players. Here's hoping for a successful future in the Middle-Earth series, seeing that Monolith's work with Shadow of Mordor was nothing but excellent.
Conclusion to Game:
Overall, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor is a blast to play. Monolith has successfully crafted both a compelling combat system and beautiful world for players to experience Talion’s adventure as the cursed Ranger attempts to take on Sauron’s army of Uruk baddies. Whether you enjoy stealthy combat, hack-and-slash-free-flow combat, or the freedom to explore a vast open world at your own leisure, Shadow of Mordor offers an incredible amount of stylistic gameplay variety and content for all kinds of players. The achievement list is rather straightforward and while nothing is entirely missable, players will definitely want to plan out their strategies when tackling the certain Warchief-related achievements and other miscellaneous tasks. This title is perfect for any and all action genre fans and lovers of Lord of the Rings lore, so you’ll definitely want to check Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor out at some point this year!
