Introduction:
Welcome to Mortal Kombat X, the latest, and arguably the greatest entrant in this most venerable of fighting franchises. MK X is also the first of the series to hit the newest generation of consoles, and it certainly looks the part, boasting a deep roster of 24 fighters, 8 of which are completely new to the series, multiple game modes, an all new faction system, 3 kombat variations for each character and the return of the ever popular fataliites/brutalities. All of this combines into the richest, most mechanically deep MK game I have played in a long time, it's a metric s**t ton of fun too!
Achievement's wise it's the typical list we have come to expect from NetherRealm Studios, only this time it is slightly more weighted to the grind than to straight up skill. Obtaining the full 1000 will have you playing virtually every mode on offer, with the majority of your time being spent with the online portion of the game.
Abbreviated Walkthrough:
There is by no means a hard and fast rule when it comes to going for the achievements in MK X, in the interest of keeping things as streamlined as possible I suggesting breaking down the achievements into five steps.
NOTE: During all these steps have this checklist (PDF, Numbers, Excel) handy. There will be certain points, especially during the campaign, where you will be fulfilling some of the requirements for the 'Target' achievements we will be working on later. Keeping track of everything from the start will save you time down the road.
Step One: Misc/Random
First up will be the quick miscellaneous/random achievements that are obtained throughout the various single player modes or in versus using a second controller. You can also use the time during this step to play around with the various characters and variants to find something that you like. By the end of this step you will have unlocked the following achievements:
- "Tower Kompetitor"
- "Pledge Yourself"
- "Time Out"
- "Statistical Advantage"
- "Moving Up"
- "Terrifying Encounter"
- "Hit the Dojo"
- "That's How You Do It"
- "FINISH HIM"
- "Brutal End"
- "Only a Real Master"
- "It's a Gusher"
- "Blanche Advantage"
- "Hara Kiri"
- "Back It Up"
- "Real Icon"
- "So Bored"
- "Jumping Bean"
- "Trolling"
- "All the Pieces"
- "Luck be a Lady"
- "Disco"
- "Almighty"
- "Not Dead Yet"
Step Two: Story
Although there are only two achievements related to the story mode once you complete it you will unlock Shinnock as a fighter, because you will need to use him in the next step for the 'Target' achievements it's best to get the story out of the way. The story is fairly short, coming in at about three hours, maybe even less if you skip all the cut scenes. After completing the story you will have unlocked the following achievements:
- "A New Beginning"
- "There is a Ruler"
NOTE: Although not directly achievement related, you will unlock an Icon/Border/Background set for each of the story QTE's you complete perfectly, including one for completing all story QTE's perfectly. Some of these sets may have rewards that will make the final XP grinds easier so it's worth taking your time with them to see what you can unlock.
Step Three: Target Achievement
During this step we will be getting all the achievements that task you with completing something xx amount of times or performing certain actions with all fighters. This is where your checklist will be useful and keeping track of some of the things you have already completed will save you time. At the end of this step you will have unlocked the following achievements:
- "Tower Warrior"
- "Tower Master"
- "Tower God"
- "Faction Champion"
- "Knockout"
- "Bloody Good Time"
- "Straight Power"
- "Dark Future"
- "Need a Doctor"
- "Master"
- "Well Rounded"
- "Not Dead Yet"
Step Four: Online
Now it's time to jump online and grab our last big batch of achievements. The majority of these online achievements can be boosted, I have marked these achievements with (B), for more information on the boosting methods please check the individual achievement descriptions. At the end of this step you should have unlocked the following achievements:
- "Challenge Accepted"
- "BUDDY!!!"
- "Inner Strength"
- "Giving Respect"
- "Return Kustomer" (B)
- "Royalty" (B)
- "Good to be King" (B)
- "Respected Fighter" (B)
- "I'm Number 1" (B)
- "Juggernaut" (B)
- "A Kontender" (B)
- "Bill of Goods" (B)
- "Unstoppable" (B)
- "Dropping Fools"
The following four achievements are not found under the Online area of the main menu, you will find them under the Faction area, despite this you still require an internet connection to make the modes available so they are listed under this step. The four Invasion related achievements are:
- "Stay Back"
- "DIE WILL YOU"
- "INVASION"
- "Can't Stop This"
Step Five: Grindin' the Mop-Up:
By this point we should only have four, maybe five, achievements left to obtain. The first three we will work on are the only three achievements that will require any sort of grinding, these achievements are:
- "No Loyalty"
- "Elder God"
- "The Kollector"
If you were lucky you may have already unlocked "The Kollector" while you were completing your 50 living towers earlier as it is the best way of unlocking the Kustom Modifiers. Once those three are out of the way you should be all done, although it is possible that you will still have one achievement left to unlock:
- "Keep it Secret"
As of right now there is no known way to unlock this achievement. As soon as further information is made available the guide will be updated.
Conclusion:
Mortal Kombat X is a fantastic game, it looks great, it plays extremely well, it has good depth and variation, but most of all it's really a blast to play. The achievements are comfortably obtainable with only a minimum amount of grinding required and it should be a mostly smooth ride to your 1000.
