Sports games, one of the more popular game types out there, have a reputation for being either a ridiculously easy 1000, or a ridiculously hard 1000. NHL 08, unfortunately, is the latter. With requirements like beating someone ranked in the Top 50 on the leaderboard, scoring on a penalty shot and scoring with your goalie, this game is a difficult 1000 even with boosting. But, this road map should help make things a bit easier.
Step One: Online play
This game has been out for a while and the servers are still up and reasonably active, but that is not likely to last. If you are concerned about it, do this step first. Playing 50 games is likely to take the longest out of any achievement, but any game counts as long as it goes a certain length (5 minutes into the game). Most of the achievements are likely to pop naturally over the course of the 50 games if you play them to completion, so you don’t really need to boost anything except for "Playing as a Team". If you feel the need to boost, or get "Online All the Time" without some of the achievements, you can always find a partner in the achievement trading thread. A boosting partner may be required for "Shootout King", too, since that game mode is quite dead, and you probably will need a boosting partner for "Fun for All". You can even unlock some of the offline achievements online according to some people, so you may get lucky and find a few more popping than you thought. 375 for you.
Step Two: Dynasty Play
Simulation is your friend here. Many of the offline achievements can be gained by simulating the entire season. Start by creating a goalie, a skater and a team (Charlestown Chiefs for me) and playing a game with them in Play Now. Make sure you make the team as dominant as possible, since you are going to need to do some tricky things with it. Take good players and cheap rookie phenoms to help minimize the need to work around the salary cap. Now start up a Dynasty with the created team and adjust the lines so that every line has the same players on it, making the "Goalie’s Nightmare" achievement easy. You will need to simulate each game individually, otherwise the assistant coach will start changing lines on you. Hopefully, your team is strong enough to win the President’s Trophy and net you the achievement (reload your Dynasty if they don’t) and then use the sim/save (save after a win, load after a loss) method to win the first five games of the playoffs. Another 225 down.
Step Three: "Tournament Champs"
Easily done by sim/saving through the International Tournament as a good team (Canada or Russia). Easy 50 right there.
Step Four: Play Now
All of the difficulty specific achievements can be done with two controllers. It is far easier to have a friend help you locally, but it isn’t required. Most of the achievements are pretty easy if you are using two controllers, aside from "Penalty Shot Hero" and maybe "He Shoots, He Scores!". A very thorough guide to "Penalty Shot Hero" can be found here, otherwise, refer to the achievement guide below for info on specific achievements.
Step Five: "Beating Tough Competition"
This achievement ranks up there with Online with 1000 people in terms of ridiculous sports achievements. It is made worse by the fact that an achievement clan claimed most of the spots in the top 50 a while back and are not likely to give it up. There are 3 methods to getting this achievement. The first being “be a god of NHL 08.” Since that is not realistic for most people, we will discuss the two that are.
You can always try asking someone in the Top 50 to meet you and throw a game to you, but that is not the wisest move. I have heard of people getting ripped off sending points codes to the potential opponent, only to have communications blocked.
Finally, you can create your own Top 50 account. It will involve creating a lot of Gold accounts to transfer the starting 500 points that an account receives into one powerful account. The full method can be found here.
While the servers are still up, you can get 800 from NHL 08, pretty easily. The rest will require boosting or a tremendous amount of luck. That being said, playing the game is quite enjoyable, and you may regret not trying to get some of the achievements naturally, but it is a long slog to 1000 for most people.
