Introduction:
Red Dead Redemption is the follow up title to the popular Red Dead Revolver. If you have played the previous Grand Theft Auto games you will be at home with a very similar game layout and style. Even though this game is based on the same engine as Grand Theft Auto 4 it has several very unique features.
Breakdown:
The game is broken up into several sections, story, side-missions and ambient objectives. The main story is a fair length but you will spend a fraction of your time completing these missions.
Achievement Issues:
There have been several reports of certain achievements not unlocking when they should. If this does happen the best resolve seems to be clearing your cache and re-attempting the achievement. This may not fix all issues but it has worked in most cases.
Main Story:
As you progress through the story you will encounter a handful of characters and earn most achievements with natural progression. You won't need to worry so much about these as they will unlock as you progress. There are several weapon based achievements which will also unlock with natural progression. The one achievement you will need to work for is "Spurred to Victory", this requires you to complete 20 missions on the same horse without changing or killing the horse. Make sure you earn this achievement as soon as possible. If you don't, you will need to start over at some point to earn it.
The one achievement you may have issue with is "Mowing Them Down", this requires you to earn 500 kills with a stationary gun. You will only earn this within the story mode if you're very lucky. The one way around this is to play a private free-roam and head to fort El Presidio in Mexico. From here you can become wanted and use one of the cannons to kill an endless amount of the Mexican Army.
Misc Achievements:
On top of the main story missions there are several achievements linked to mini games, hideouts, strangers and weapon based achievements. You can progress towards these achievements at your own rate, and at any point.
Completing the game to 100%:
Next to earning level 50 in multiplayer, this will be the most time consuming section of the game. You will need to complete the following objectives to earn the big 100 achievement:
- Missions (57)
- Rare Weapons (5)
- Jobs (5)
- Player Houses (13)
- Outfits (9)
- Gang Hideouts (7)
- Bounty Locations (20)
- Mini Games (6)
- Challenges (8)
- Strangers (19)
- Map Locations (94)
You can use this thread if you need hints, tips and extra information on completing the requirements.
Ambient Challenges:
There is a very long list of ambient free-roam challenges, which you will need to complete. They include 18 stranger missions, 20 bounty hunter missions, 7 gang hideouts, 5 jobs and 10 ranks over 4 different challenge modes. By following the 100% guide above you shouldn't have any issue finding all the locations and requirements to complete each challenge. There are several achievements linked to these challenges and they all count towards the 100% completion.
Multiplayer:
Most of the multiplayer achievements can be earned with little effort, though you will need to find a boosting partner or two for the consecutive wins. Leveling up will take the longest, but if you have the patience to play through gang hideouts you should be able to reach level 50 in no time.
If you're having issues with the free-roam multiplayer side of things you can find a partner in the Posse Sign-Up Thread to help you. You will either need to find 7 other players to help with "Posse Up" or keep inviting people into your own posse as they join the free-roam. The rest of the online achievements can be earned through teamwork and communication.
Before you start, you can get the first pack "Outlaws to the End" for free. This pack includes 10 achievements which will place you in a set of co-op based missions. This set of achievements are no more challenging than the ones provided with the game, but some will require you to play with expert aiming. I recommend you play through the casual missions several times, and earn your gold badges before progressing to the advanced modes. You will also need to find yourself a co-op partner. If you get stuck any any point you can use this guide for reference.
Legends and Killers Pack:
This pack consists of 10 more achievements, and several new multiplayer characters, challenges, locations and a few single player challenges. You will also have a new projectile weapon, the Tomahawk. Nearly all of these challenges and achievements can be completed in a private free roam with a friend or another player. Though this time you will need three friends to join your session to complete "Who needs Deadeye?" and "Double Bagger". The rest of the achievements are based around kill styles or challenges, you can use this guide for reference. The one achievement which may seem rather illusive to some players is "Legendary". You will be required to reach level 50, then pass over into your first Legend Rank. If you have already done this the achievement will unlock once you load up multiplayer. For anyone who is far from reaching level 50, and your first Legend Rank. Just keep at the multiplayer, play through the hideouts and complete challenges. Also make sure you check the Rockstar Newwire for upcoming XP events.
Note: Do not use the offline XP boosting methods. If you remove the patches and earn XP offline in a private free roam or via System Link, your multiplayer ranks and experience will be rest once you re-install the patches to go online.
The only singleplayer achievement to worry about is the Master Exploder achievement. The achievement requires you to complete the Explosive Rifle challenges in singleplayer. There are 5 different challenges to complete. The first challenge is to purchase the rifle. It is available for purchase from Blackwater's Blacksmith. See the achievement's description for more information on the achievement.
Multiplayer is where Liar's and Cheats really shines. With the inclusion of Liar's Dice, Poker, and Races, you'll have a blast with each new addition. Most achievements are straightforward and easy, however there are a couple that will take a little bit of grinding, a few boosting partners and a little perseverance. Each minigame has achievements related to it, and are quite simple to unlock. Pa-Pa-Pa-Poker Ace and Compulsive Liar, however, require a FULL game (6 players each minigame) and will take the most time to complete. Stronghold is a new gametype that also brings in some new achievements. These CAN be earned in a Private match, so the only problem will be to find the correct amount of people to boost it. Boosting partners can be found in the Achievement Trading Thread.
During your playthrough, make sure to check the surrounding areas for territories to save. There are 22 of them, 13 in America and 9 in Mexico. After so many in-game hours these locations will come under attack again (roughly 30-72 hours). Try to keep them saved so you have less to do during the cleanup section. You can tell when a location is under attack if on the map the location has a green marker on it. See Spinning Plates for more details about saving locations.
After completing the story, you will aim for 100% completion in Undead Nightmare's singleplayer portion. Anything you didn't do while playing through the story will be done now. 100% requires all challenges, all graveyards to be cleared, all stranger missions, break the unicorn, all outfits, have every territory saved at least once and save all 16 survivors. See Chupathingy for details on the chupacabra, Mad Marston: The Trail Warrior for challenges, Fan Service for the unicorn and Spinning Plates for details on saving territories.
For the multiplayer portion of the Undead Nightmare expansion, it contains 2 simple achievements worth 10 a piece. Neither take that long, the main problem with doing Kingpin is that it either requires you to be decent at Red Dead's multiplayer or that you get a group of 8 other people to boost it with you. Get the 8 other people together and start a land grab in a private free roam, and then take turns killing each person while you are in control of the land.
Overall you will enjoy your experience passing through the west and story. The main story won't take you forever to complete, but there are plenty of extra activities and challenges to do on the way. Most achievements will come naturally with a little effort, but others will require patience and time to complete.
[x360a would like to thank KillerBEA, Markolie & Yunder for the DLC additions]
