Introduction:
Resident Evil 4 marks a new chapter in the Resident Evil series. You rejoin Leon S. Kennedy six years after his first mission as a rookie cop from Resident Evil 2. Leon is on a top-secret mission to investigate the disappearance of the president's daughter, Ashley, from an evil, zombie cult called Los Illuminados. As Leon, you must make your way to a mysterious location in Europe, where new enemies await. Though the game has been ported from the Xbox 360, the controls remain from the original consoles. These can be changed in the settings menu.

Playthrough #1:
With this playthrough, you will get most of the achievements. You can also get the three missable achievements as well. When you finish your first playthrough make sure you save your cleared game data, which will open optional costume sets and professional mode.

The achievements you will earn on this step are:

  • "Do Not Shoot The Water"
  • "A Rock and a Hard Place"
  • "Secure the Ballistics"
  • "A Bloodline Severed"
  • "A Terrifying Assassin"
  • "The Castellan Falls"
  • "The Ties That Bind"
  • "We're Going Home"
  • "What Are They Worth?"

Playthrough #2:
With this step, you want to play Ada’s playthrough, Separate Ways, which is under the "Extras" tab on the Main Menu. Completing Separate Ways will unlock the Special 2 costume set which will make Professional Mode much easier.

The achievement you will earn on this step are:

  • "The S Stands for Stylish!!"

Playthrough #3:
Now you have unlocked professional mode and special costume set 2, it’s time to battle the highest difficulty.

The achievement you will earn on this step are:

  • "A Heart of Steel"

Mop-Up:
If you have missed any of the achievements, you will have to start a new playthrough as the game does not have a chapter select option.

Conclusion:
Overall, the game should take you about 30 hours to complete. The controls may take a little to get used to, but once you do, it will be fine.

There are 12 achievements with a total of 1000 points

  • Ring the mysterious bell. What happens after that, is up to you.

This is story related and cannot be missed.

Near the beginning of Chapter 1-1, you will get to this part of the game and the villagers will start to attack you.

Just after the fire, you need to run into the house on the left-hand side, which will start a cutscene. Leon will block the door and a chainsaw guy will show up. Go upstairs and get the shotgun off the wall and the grenade out the cabinet. Just survive this until a bell rings, sending them away and the achievement will unlock.

  • Summon the master of the lake. Don't rock the boat.

    This achievement is missable!

At the end of chapter 1-3, you will get here and kill a boss.

Before you kill the boss, all you need to do is go to the edge of the water, then fire bullets into the water and the boss will come out and eat you. If you want to save on bullets, you can make a save in the hut to the right of the picture, then reload your save.

  • Outmaneuver the rampaging beast, El Gigante.

This is story related and cannot be missed.

Near the end of chapter 2-1, just after you get the “Round Insignia” from the waterfall, you will end up fighting a boss called El Gigante.

There are two ways you can kill this beast.

    1. When you get to the boss fight, shoot him full of bullets. Once he curls over and his weak spot comes out of his back, run up to him and press to get on his back, then mash the button to slash the parasite. Rinse and repeat until he dies. He will take a lot of bullets, but after he goes down three times, the battle should be over.
    2. If you have the cash and the space to carry one, you can buy a rocket launcher from the shop before the battle. If you shoot him straight away...he will die.
  • Rescue the president's daughter, Ashley. Afterwards, the real fun begins.

This is story related and cannot be missed.

After defeating El Gigante, you will get back to the church. Once inside, you will need to solve a puzzle. When you have solved the puzzle, you can rescue Ashley and the achievement will unlock.

If you need help solving the puzzle, here is the solution:

  • Defeat the village chief in battle.

This is story related and cannot be missed.

Towards the end of chapter 2-3, you will approach a barn. In this barn, you will fight the village chief, Bitores Mendez. First, you must input a combination to dodge, press + or +. It is best to keep him at a distance and shoot his spinal column, once he's taken enough damage his body will split into two. He will swing around the beams now and if he gets near you he will grab you. A shotgun blast will knock him to the ground, so you will have a few seconds to keep shooting him.

  • Turn the tables on Verdugo, the right hand of Salazar.

    This achievement is missable!

Near the end of chapter 4-1, you will get a cutscene in which Salazar will drop you into a pit. Go on and dodge all the quick time events until you are in the section where Verdugo appears. Power on the elevator control and wait for Verdugo to show himself. Now you can kill Verdugo or you can keep dodging his attacks until the lift comes. To unlock the achievement, you need to kill Verdugo.

There are two ways you can kill him:

    • There are four bottles of liquid nitrogen one in each of the three rooms and one in the tunnel. Throw down the liquid nitrogen bottles and shoot him with what you have got. After that, wait until the rolling shutter opens and run to the next nitrogen bottle and do the same. Then do the same with the other two bottles, if you have shot him enough he will die.

    • If you have the cash and the space to carry one you can buy a rocket launcher from the shop before the battle. You will still need to throw down the nitrogen bottle then hit him with the rocket.
  • Defeat Salazar, and make your escape from the castle.

This is story related and cannot be missed.

Just like some of the bosses, there are two ways you can deal with it.

Near the end of chapter 4-4, you will need to defeat Salazar.

1: If you can get a fully powered Broken Butterfly. Shoot the eye until Salazar appears it should take one shot with the Butterfly.

Now shoot him as many times as you can with the Broken Butterfly. You may have to repeat it twice as he takes up to nine shots for him to die. You may have to dodge the tentacles from the left and right. When the monster starts opening its mouth run to the left or right, so it does not eat you.

2: If you have the cash and the space to carry one you can buy a rocket launcher from the shop before the battle. You will still need to shoot the eye to make Salazar appear then hit him with the rocket.

  • Defeat Krauser, your former partner, in battle.

This is story related and cannot be missed.

At the end of Chapter 5-3, you will get to some ruins and run into Krauser.

You'll need to get 2 parts of the key before you can take him down.

    And one from him.

This boss battle is in two parts. With the first part, you need to go around the ruins and have fights with Krauser.

With the second part, you need to deal damage to Krauser until he dies.

You only need your knife to beat Krauser, so you don't need to buy any ammo for this fight. In the first part wait for Krauser to get close and then use your knife. Now and then he will try and do a move at this point there will be a quick time event. When you have hurt him enough he will throw a flash grenade and leave.

Once you get two parts you will fight him for the last time and get the final part that you need.

    Unlocking the achievement.

  • Defeat Saddler in battle, and escape from the nightmare.

This is story related and cannot be missed.

Like some of the bosses are is two ways you can deal with the fight.

At the end of chapter 5-5, you must fight Saddler.

1: When the fight starts you notice flammable barrels, stand from a distance and shoot them. This will stun Saddler so you can shoot the centre eye.

Pull out your weapon and shoot the eye. Alternatively, you can approach that central eye and press you button which will engage Leon in an eye-stabbing action with his knife. There are also some cranes in the area that will help. Once you have done enough damage Ada will still drop in another rocket launcher and you will also need to use it to finish the job. Once he is dead the achievement will unlock.

2: If you have the cash and the space to carry one you can buy a rocket launcher from the shop before the battle. First you need to stun Saddler by shooting his small eyeball on each leg. Now aim your rocket at him and fire, but it’s not over yet Ada will still drop in another rocket launcher and you will also need to use it to finish the job. Once he is dead the achievement will unlock.

  • Clear the game on the highest difficulty.

First, before you can start the highest difficulty which is professional you need to complete the game on normal to unlock the setting.

Professional not only has the enemies hit harder and take more damage but will give you less ammunition and items. So, try to conserve your ammunition the best you can.

Here are some tips that could help you in your survival.

1: Every time you go through a door, steps etc leading to a different area and the OPEN text is in green, the game will give you a checkpoint once you enter the new area. So, use it to your advantage.

2: If you are about to get attacked try to turn your back to the enemy and you will take less damage.

3: Select costume 2 for Ashley to have on her Suit of Armor. It will make Ashley invincible, so you never have to worry about her dying. The enemies will also not be able to carry her away.

4: Find as many of the hidden treasures which will give you more money to spend at the merchant. This is a link to all the Hidden Treasures in the game. Thanks to Emilia the Sage.

Here are the combinations of the herbs if you’re not sure what they all do.

Green - Restores a small amount of health
Green + Green - Restores a large amount of health
Green + Green + Green - Fully restores health
Red - Cannot be used alone
Yellow - Cannot be used alone
Green + Red - Fully restores health
Green + Yellow - Restores a small amount of health and adds an extra 5 percent to total health
Green + Red + Yellow - Fully restores health and adds an extra 5 percent to total health

  • Acquire all of the bottle caps in the game.

    This achievement is missable!

The way it works is this:

1: There are 6 bottle caps for each section, totalling 24 caps (4 game modes A, B, C and D).

2: You can access all games modes at once in 5-3.

3: After three bottle caps (score above 3000 each time) the layout changes for the last two (technically 3 depending on the order you get them in).

4: In each game mode, the 6th cap is special, either getting about 4000 points OR hitting all the non-friendly targets anywhere on the body (you can miss shots if you hit them eventually).
THE MOVING SALAZAR HEAD TARGET DOES NOT COUNT TOWARDS THE HIT COUNT.

5: Your best bet is to use the pistol for everything, you can attempt to use the sniper for Salazar's heads, but I find the pistol best. Reason for not using the sniper normally is it's slower plus you need to reload after every shot. And it penetrates multiple targets, so you won't get that 5 hits in a row for the Salazar's head if you use it.

When you get to the first gallery there will be a note where the merchant is giving you the rules.

    Scoring
    Male Ganado = 50 Points (100 Headshot)
    Female Ganado = 50 Points (200 Headshot)
    Salazar Head = 500 Points
    Ashley Graham = -1000

  • Acquire all of the costumes in the game.

There are two extra costumes for each Leon and Ashley to unlock in the game.

The first two are unlocked for simply beating the main storyline. This will earn you: Leon’s RPD uniform & Ashley’s white and red-trimmed pop star outfit.

Beating the storyline will also unlock the mini-game ‘Separate Ways’ (a mini-story involving Ada.) Beating this will earn you: Leon’s Gangster outfit & Ashley’s medieval suit of armour.
