Introduction:
State of Decay 2 is the sequel to the hit zombie-survival game that came out in 2013 on the Xbox 360. You take control of a small group of survivors as you build a community to combat the epidemic. You'll scavenge the surrounding countryside for resources such as food, fuel, and ammo as you build facilities, recruit new members, and build relationships with other groups of survivors. All while attempting to eliminate the Plague Hearts from your land, making it livable once more.

Abbreviated Walkthrough:
State of Decay 2 has a steep learning curve for players new to the series but after a few trial-and-error attempts you shouldn't have too much trouble surviving the apocalypse. Your main goal is to eliminate the ten Plague Hearts in your territory, all while managing your ever-dwindling resources and maintaing positive relationships with the other enclaves of survivors. Most of the achievements will come while playing the game naturally, but it will take at least four complete playthroughs (one with each leader type) to unlock all of the achievements.

Multiplayer:
This is an online-only game, meaning you must be connected to the internet to play it. That said, multiplayer is entirely optional. You can play through the entire game by yourself. Even the achievement "Sie sind das Essen und wir sind die Jaeger!", which says you need to play with another player, will unlock simply by queuing up and then cancelling.

Mop-Up:
You should have most of the achievements by the end of your four playthroughs. The only achievment that should take extra time is "Others and Wights". This is quite the grind, so save this one for last.

Zedhunter DLC

Introduction:
State of Decay 2 Zedhunter Update is a free DLC that added crossbows, new melee and close-combat weaponry, an option to reset your survivor's core skill specializations, new quirk skills, and new plague consumables, which you can also craft.

Abbreviated Walkthrough:
There are two miscellaneous and one combat related achievements. You can do them while playing through your campaign, in any order you like. I suggest you always keep an eye on your map for the Mysterious Wandering Trader mission, which will eventually lead you to earning "New Lease on Life." Always carry a crossbow with you and use it to kill zeds whenever possible. Kill 50 of them and this will grant you "Am I the Only One Zen Around Here?" Save at least one plague consumable that come across your path, keep it at your inventory, use it under the right circumstances, and you'll have "Should Have Read the Warning Label."

Overall Conclusion:
Overall, State of Decay 2 is a long, but simple completion. The game can become quite repetitive if played for long periods of time, but if you stick with it you shouldn't have any trouble getting all the gamerscore.

There are 153 achievements with a total of 2400 points

  • Kill 100 zombies.

This will unlock while playing the game naturally. See "Others and Wights" for more information.

  • Search 10 containers.

This will unlock while playing the game naturally. See "No Stone Unturned" for more information.

  • Search 100 containers.

This will unlock while playing the game naturally. There are thousands of containers spread across the map. Every building you approach will display the number of containers in it. They will flash white when you approach. Simply search 100 of them to unlock the achievement. This will come very quickly, as you will probably search hundreds in a playthrough. I suggest searching each container slowly. Rushing has a chance of causing a loud noise, potentially attracting a hoard of zombies to attack.

  • Deliver a rucksack to your Storage facility.

This will unlock while playing the game naturally. See "I Got You a Pack Mule" for more information.

  • Deliver 50 rucksacks to your Storage facility.

This will unlock while playing the game naturally. Rucksacks are the large bundles of supplies that your character can carry on his back. You can only carry one per character, but if you bring a vehicle you can store several rucksacks in the trunk. You can also switch to a character who is following you to carry one more. Deliver them to the storage facility in our base. You can quickly transport rucksacks from your vehicle to your storage facility if you park in a parking spot, open your trunk, highlight the rucksack, and press .

  • Build a facility at your base.

This will unlock while playing the game naturally. See "Paradise City" for more information.

  • Build 10 facilities at your base.

Once you have reached your first base as part of the tutorial, you can build a facility in any of the open slots. You can either walk up to the empty slot or use the Base screen to see an overview of your entire base. The type of facility you can build depends on whether the slot in inside or outside, and what types of skills your survivors have. I personally always have a Garden/Farm, Infirmary, Workshop, and Beds.

  • Destroy a plague heart.

This will unlock while playing the game naturally. See "Total Eclipse" for more information.

  • Destroy 5 plague hearts.

This will unlock while playing the game naturally. See "Total Eclipse" for more information.

  • Recruit a new survivor to your community.

This will unlock while playing the game naturally. While exploring the map, you will often get radio calls from survivors that need help in various tasks, from defending them while they search a building or transporting them to another place. Help them out, and occasionally the survivor will offer to join your community. Accept and take them back to your base to let them join. There are other ways to recruit survivors as well. If you become "Allied" with a community of survivors, you can approach one and ask them if they'd like to join your group. This will disband their group and they others will leave, but you will gain a new member. You can also use the radio to call out to survivors in the area.

I suggest having a varied community of survivors with different skill sets. It isn't very useful to have two survivors with the exact same skill. "Gardening" and "Medicine" skills are very important, while some skills like "Movie Trivia" are useless. Experiment around to find the skills (and the facilities they allow you to build) that you like the most. There are skill books you can find that give survivors a particular skill or increase the level of that skill.

  • Survey 5 sites from high places.

See "Silent Cartographer" for more information.

  • Survey 50 sites from high places.

"High places" are indicated by the binocular icon on your map. Simply climb to the top and hold down the . Aim at each of the question marks to survey the site. You will have to climb several different high places to survey all 50 sites.

Warning: Be careful climbing down from these "high places". Sometimes a survivor will not recognize the ladder and walk straight off, falling and hurting, or even killing, themselves.

  • Earn enough standing to promote a recruit to citizen.

This will unlock while playing the game naturally. See "Gotta Be Larger than Life" for more information.

  • Earn enough standing to promote a citizen to hero.

This will unlock while playing the game naturally. The game will automatically promote a survivor from recruit status to citizen, and then to hero, when they earn enough influence for the community. Influence is earned by doing pretty much everything. Returning rucksacks, killing special infected, and running over zombies will earn you small amounts. The largest amounts come from completing quests and destroying plague hearts.

Reaching hero status doesn't take very long, and unlocks permanent traits for your community. Try to make all of your survivors hero status. Heroes are the only survivors that you can promote to Leader status.

  • Secure 5 sites by exploring every room and killing every zombie.

This will unlock by playing the game naturally. See "Every Piece of Trash in Town" for more information.

  • Secure 25 sites by exploring every room and killing every zombie.

A "site" is basically any structure that has rooms and containers. To unlock this achievement, you need to kill every zombie in the structure (and sometimes wandering just outside) and you need to enter every room. Unexplored rooms are indicated by a black box on your mini-map. Once the site is clear, zombies will no longer spawn inside the zone surrounding it for a short time. This achievement will unlock very quickly as you explore the map.

  • Destroy an infestation.

See "The Purge" for more information.

  • Destroy 10 infestations.

Infestations are indicated on your map with a yellow zombie icon. They consist of a couple of screamers and a larger group of zombies. Left unattended, infestations can spread to nearby buildings and you will see more and more zombies wandering around. You want to keep these in check, as your survivor's morale will drop if there are too many infestations around.

The quickest way to clear an infestation is to drive up to the building, honk your horn, and run over the zombies that come running out. The screamers will attract more zombies if you're not quick, but it shouldn't be a problem.

  • Destroy a horde.

This will unlock by playing the game naturally. See "Crowd Control" for more information.

  • Destroy 25 hordes.

"Hordes" are groups of zombies indicated on your map. They usually consist of less than 10 zombies. They don't pose much of a threat, and can easily be run over or fought normally. This will unlock quickly while playing.

  • Kill 50 zombies with your car door.

To open the car door while driving, press . You will hold the door open, and if you have a passenger, they will do it too. Your car doors will take damage and eventually fall off, but you can repair it with a toolkit. Just approach the front of the vehicle with one in your inventory to use it. This will not take long to unlock.

  • Kill a feral.

Ferals are the quick, nimble zombies with the loud roar. They are resistant to melee attacks, and can quickly injure your survivors, but are still weak to headshots with a weapon. However, the best way to kill them is to run them over with a car. Unlike the first game, ferals rarely dodge out of the way of vehicles, and one solid hit is enough to kill them.

  • Bloaters are the slow moving, bulbous zombies. They are extremely weak, but should be killed from afar. One bullet to their stomach is enough to pop them. If you get too close, the gas and pus they spew will injure your survivors. They also have a nasty habit of laying in the middle of the road. Running over them will fill your car up with their gas and injure you. Quickly exit the vehicle and wait for the gas to clear.

  • Kill a juggernaut.

Juggernauts are the largest, and most dangerous, of the zombies. Avoid them as much as you can, but you will have to kill one for the occasional quest. Don't bother ramming your car into them, you'll just break down extremely fast. They are resistant to flames, melee weapons, and bullets. They are still weak to explosions.

The best way to kill them is to circle strafe them, throwing what explosives you have and shooting them in the head. You can run up and get a handful of melee hits in if they are distracted by another survivor. Eventually the Juggernaut will fall to his knees. Run up and press + to execute them. This will also unlock "Piggyback Ride".

  • Call in a radio command.

See "Citizen Z" for more information.

  • Call in 25 radio commands.

The radio is accessed by pressing "Up" on the directional pad. Each command costs influence. The cheapest options are to ask around for a particular resource. The most expensive is to ask for blood hearts, helpful when you can't find that last one on the map. Continue to call in help 25 time to unlock the achievement.

  • Shoot the helmet off an armored zombie.

Armored zombies are the ones in army fatigues. They have helmets that protect them from headshots. Keep shooting them in the head and eventually the helmet will pop off and the achievement will unlock.

  • Choose a specialization for the Cardio skill.

The Cardio skill is raised by running around, jumping, and climbing obstacles. It shouldn't take long to max out. You can then choose a specialization in that skill, and continue to increase it.

  • Choose a specialization for the Wits skill.

The Wits skill is raised by sneak-attacking zombies and searching through containers. It shouldn't take long to max out. You can then choose a specialization in that skill, and continue to increase it.

  • Choose a specialization for the Fighting skill.

The Fighting skill is raised by attacking zombies with melee weapons. It shouldn't take long to max out. You can then choose a specialization in that skill, and continue to increase it.

  • Choose a specialization for the Shooting skill.

The Shooting skill is raised by performing headshots on zombies. It shouldn't take long to max out. You can then choose a specialization in that skill, and continue to increase it.

  • Elect a warlord as the leader of your community.

See "Can We Fix It? Yes We Can!" for more information.

  • Elect a sheriff as the leader of your community.

See "Can We Fix It? Yes We Can!" for more information.

  • Elect a trader as the leader of your community.

See "Can We Fix It? Yes We Can!" for more information.

  • Elect a builder as the leader of your community.

There are four types of leaders that you can elect to lead your community. You can only have one leader at a time. Every survivor you recruit has the potential to be one of these four types, which can be seen in their character sheet. A survivor has to reach "Hero" status before they can be promoted to a leader.

Each type of leader has a unique facility they can build and special quests to complete after destroying all the plague hearts in an area. Completing the game with a leader gives you optional bonuses to use in subsequent playthroughs.

  • Destroy every plague heart in your territory.

Plague Hearts are represented by the big red symbols on your map. There are 10 Hearts on each map, and they do not respawn once destroyed. When you are near one you will notice a red mist in the air and an increase in the number of plague zombies. The best way to locate Plague Hearts is to climb up all the survey points on a map and look around. You can also use a radio command to locate a single Heart, but this costs a large chunk of influence.

Plague hearts are resistant to melee attacks, and will spew a poisonous blast that will injure you if you get too close. It will also summon a large amount of plague zombies to defend it. The best way to fight a plague heart is to come prepared. Load up on explosives (pipe bombs and grenades) and fire starters (molotovs and napalm). These will take out a Plague Heart very quickly. Also bring along a distraction, such as fireworks or a road flare. Throw the distraction outside, then run in and unleash all you have on the Heart. It should take less than 30 seconds to kill the Heart, and all the plague zombies will be distracted away from you. Rinse and repeat with all the remaining hearts on the map.

  • Switch to a different survivor when you become fatigued.

This will unlock while playing the game naturally. After using a survivor for a while, their maximum energy will decrease as they get tired. When you see this, return to your base or one of your outposts and switch to a different character. Get used to routinely switching out your characters to raise their stats.

  • Complete a campaign with the warlord's legacy.

Once all the plague hearts are destroyed, you will have a handful of short and simple missions to complete depending on what kind of leader you have. Once you finish the last mission, the game will end and you will no longer have access to your community. You will be given a "legacy" that will help on subsequent playthroughs.

To unlock this achievement, simply complete the game with a Warlord as your leader.

  • Complete a campaign with the sheriff's legacy.

Once all the plague hearts are destroyed, you will have a handful of short and simple missions to complete depending on what kind of leader you have. Once you finish the last mission, the game will end and you will no longer have access to your community. You will be given a "legacy" that will help on subsequent playthroughs.

To unlock this achievement, simply complete the game with a Sheriff as your leader.

  • Complete a campaign with the trader's legacy.

Once all the plague hearts are destroyed, you will have a handful of short and simple missions to complete depending on what kind of leader you have. Once you finish the last mission, the game will end and you will no longer have access to your community. You will be given a "legacy" that will help on subsequent playthroughs.

To unlock this achievement, simply complete the game with a Trader as your leader.

  • Complete a campaign with the builder's legacy.

Once all the plague hearts are destroyed, you will have a handful of short and simple missions to complete depending on what kind of leader you have. Once you finish the last mission, the game will end and you will no longer have access to your community. You will be given a "legacy" that will help on subsequent playthroughs.

To unlock this achievement, simply complete the game with a Builder as your leader.

  • Settle a base in the foothills territory.

There are three different maps, or territories, that you can play on. Simply start a new game in the Foothills to unlock this achievement.

  • Settle a base in the plateau territory.

There are three different maps, or territories, that you can play on. Simply start a new game in the Plateau to unlock this achievement.

  • Settle a base in the valley territory.

There are three different maps, or territories, that you can play on. Simply start a new game in the Valley to unlock this achievement.

  • Start a new community with survivors from a completed one.

When you start a new game you can pick from randomized characters or you can select from survivors of communities of games you've already completed. These survivors will come with all of the traits, skills, and equipment they had on them when they finished the game.

It is a good idea to equip three good survivors with your best guns, weapons, mods, and more before ending the game, and then carry them on into your next session.

  • Shoot off a flare (or volunteer to help someone who does).

Press to bring up the radio menu. You can queue up to ask for help or volunteer to join someone else's game. As soon as you queue up, the achievement should unlock; you don't need to actually play with anybody at all.

  • Kill 1,000 zombies.

See "Others and Wights" for more information.

  • Kill 10,000 zombies.

Killing 10,000 zombies will take quite a while. Save this achievement for last, after you've unlocked everything else. The best way to kill zombies is to run them over with a vehicle. You can rack up kills pretty quickly, but your vehicle will become damaged over time.

Make sure you have a survivor with the Automechanic skill (the specialization of the mechanic skill) in your base. Build an Autoshop, which will allow you to build upgrade kits and repair kits. All normal vehicles can be upgraded, which provide extra fuel storage and and increased protection from hitting zombies. I suggest grabbing the large trucks and vans and upgrading them. You can increase the damage protection further by using the Autoshop facility's special ability, which makes you vehicles 50% more resistant to damage for a short time. You can increase this even more by driving around as someone with the "Driving" skill.

With all this combined you should be able to drive around running over zombies for quite a long time before you need to stop for repairs. It will still take a while, so I suggest having something to listen to or watch while you grind the kills out.

  • Kill 4 screamers.

Screamers are the pale, armless zombies found wandering around, usually with groups of other zombies or in infested buildings. If they notice you, they will scream, attracting more zombies to the area. They are quickly dispatched in melee or with a headshot. Kill 4 to unlock the achievement.

  • Destroy a plague heart at night.

Simply destroy a plague heart while it is dark outside. This achievement has proven to be a little buggy. Some players report that it took several tries for it to unlock, while others say it unlocked the first time. In fact, the achievement unlocked for me when I destroyed one while the sun was up. Keep trying and the achievement should unlock before long.

  • Use the Auto Shop to create an upgrade kit and apply it to a vehicle.

The Auto Shop is a facility you can build in your base. You will need a survivor with the Automechanic skill (a specialization of the mechanic skill). You can then create an upgrade kit and apply it to one of your vehicles. The type of upgrade kit depends on the type of vehicle you have. Just approach the front of your vehicle while it is in a parking spot, and use the kit.

  • Transfer an item from a vehicle's inventory directly into your base.

When parked in one of your base's parking spots, you can transfer goods directly from the trunk of the vehicle into your base by pressing . This is a good way to quickly transfer rucksacks into your storage.

  • Build the Trade Depot facility at your base.

Each type of leader has a specific facility that only they can build. The Trade Depot can be built by a Trader leader.

  • Build the Field Hospital facility at your base.

Each type of leader has a specific facility that only they can build. The Field Hospital can be built by the Sheriff leader.

  • Build the Armory facility at your base.

Each type of leader has a specific facility that only they can build. The Armory can be built by the Warlord leader.

  • Build the Sniper Tower facility at your base.

Each type of leader has a specific facility that only they can build. The Sniper Tower can be built by the Builder leader.

  • Finish off a juggernaut with a melee execution.

See "Glutton for Punishment" for more information.

  • Work with 5 enclaves to make them your allies.

Enclaves are the other groups of survivors in the world. They will request favors from you every once in a while. Completing these tasks will make them friendly, and then allied with your community. Allied enclaves provide bonuses to your community, and you can also recruit a member from the enclave to join you (although this will disband the enclave and the other survivors will disappear). Do this 5 times over the course of your playthroughs to unlock the achievement.

  • Spend Influence to buy 10 items from enclaves.

See "Can Buy Me Love" for more information.

  • Earn influence by selling 10 items to enclaves.

Enclaves are the other groups of survivors in the world. If they are not hostile, you can trade with them. Simply sell 10 items to enclaves to unlock this achievement. Buy 10 items to unlock "Black Friday".

Secret achievements

  • Have a survivor within your community die.

Simply put, kill one of your survivors. Throughout all my hours in the game, I never had a character die on accident. The only one I lost was someone I purposefully killed to unlock this achievement. Have a recruit you don't like? Empty his inventory into your supply locker, find the nearest juggernaut, and charge at him with nothing but a screwdriver. Achievement unlocked.

  • Cause a commotion while searching a container.

While searching a container, you can rush to go through it faster by pressing . However, this will often cause a loud noise, attracting a group of nearby zombies. Simply cause a commotion to unlock this achievement.

Secret achievements

DLC: Zedhunter

There are 3 achievements with a total of 25 points

  • Kill 50 plague zombies with crossbows.

The Zedhunter Update brought a new type of weapon into the game: crossbows. They are very useful when you're trying to go stealth, as zombies are not able to track you if you shoot them from a reasonable distance.

For this achievement, you'll need to kill 50 plague zombies (the ones covered in blood, with red eyes) using crossbows.

I suggest looking for hordes on the streets, you can kill them undetected and progress really fast. Don't forget to check the bodies for arrow pickups. If you run out of arrows at any point, you can use the workshop at your base to build arrows for your crossbows. 30 common arrows cost 2 materials.

  • Contract blood plague by using a plague consumable.

With the Zedhunter Update, a few plague consumables were introduced. These items give you a temporary buff but increase your plague meter. For this achievement, you not only have to consume one of these items, but get your character infected by it.

To speed up things and assure you got the plague from the consumable, you can run into a blood plague zombie and let it hit you first, increasing the plague meter which is displayed right above your minimap. Once you get bitten, get rid of the zombie and use the plague consumable.

Keep in mind, in case you want that character to stay alive afterwards, you should craft a blood plague cure at your infirmary first and carry it with you.

  • Use a training manual to retrain a specialization.

All characters have a few skills that you can develop throughout your game (Cardio, Wits, Fighting, Shooting and an Expertise related). Their progress is represented by stars, and once you fill all 7 stars from a particular skill, you're able to choose a specialization.

The Zedhunter Update brought the possibility to erase your specialization and pick another path for 1500 Influence.

First, you'll need the "Mysterious Wandering Trader" goal to appear on your map. There isn't any actions or stage at the game known for triggering the appearance for sure, but I recognized a pattern of weekend spawns, which some other players claim to have happened too.

Whenever it appears on your map, just drive to the location mark, talk to the Trader there and buy any of the 1500 Influence training manuals available, then use it any specialization your character may have.
