Introduction:
The Evil Within 2 is a third-person survival horror/stealth game directed by John Johanas, developed by Tango Gameworks, and published by Bethesda Softworks. In The Evil Within 2, you continue to play as Sebastian Castellanos, a washed up detective who is haunted and traumatized by the events of the Beacon Mental Hospital incident from the first game. The disappearance of Sebastian’s wife and the death of his daughter continue to haunt him. Sebastian is approached by Juli Kidman, his former partner from the Krimson City Police Department, revealing that Sebastian’s daughter is still alive. Kidman is looking for Sebastian’s help in order to save his daughter and so naturally, Sebastian leaps at this new opportunity and accompanies Kidman to a secret facility belonging to the sinister Mobius corporation….

Abbreviated Walkthrough:
To complete The Evil Within 2, you have to clear the game at least two and a half times. In order to unlock Classic Mode (the highest difficulty available), you must first beat the game on any other difficulty. Completing Classic Mode is the hardest achievement in the game, but it isn’t as much of a challenge as clearing Akumu Mode from the first game.

Cheats codes were added to The Evil Within 2 as part of Patch 1.05. You can enable cheats by linking the game to a Bethesda.net account or creating a new Bethesda.net account by pressing in the game's main menu. After the Bethesda.net account has been linked, go to the options menu, and under general settings you can find three cheats (infinite stamina, super strength, and invincibility). Turning on cheats will not disable achievements, so you can use these cheats to your advantage if you want to make it easier to complete the game. Keep in mind that there are some situations where invincibility does not apply. I have listed these scenarios under the "You Asked For It... Again" achievement for completing the game in Classic Mode.

Playthrough #1: Nightmare difficulty, all collectibles, weapons, and misc. achievements
It’s recommended that you start out on Nightmare difficulty for practice, so you can be better prepared for your Classic Mode playthrough later on. Use a collectibles guide and try to knock out as many of the collectibles as you can so you don’t have to worry about them after this playthrough. Familiarize yourself with some of the locker key locations so you know where they are in your Classic Mode playthrough, as locker keys can give you access to some additional ammo if needed.

Be wary of the “Rogue Signal” side mission that you must play in Chapter 3 so you can unlock the “Backup Ain’t Coming” achievement and gain access to the Sawed-Off Shotgun. There are also two side missions that you must complete in Chapter 7 so you can finish “The Last Step” side mission in Chapter 13 and unlock the “Sykes Out” achievement. Also note the multiple steps that must be taken from chapters 11-14 to unlock the “I’ll Take You Down Myself” achievement.

For the most part, you should expect to unlock the achievements in this approximate order during your first playthrough:

Chapter 1

  • N/A

Chapter 2

  • "Welcome to Union" (story-related)

Chapter 3

In this chapter, make sure that you obtain the Warden Crossbow, the Sniper Rifle, the Laser-Sighted Handgun, and the Sawed-Off Shotgun. You will need to collect every standard weapon in order to unlock the “Powerhouse” achievement by the end of the game. Finding the Warden Crossbow is directly tied to the “Good to See You Again” achievement and you can find the Sawed-Off Shotgun as you make your way through O’Neal’s “Rogue Signal” side mission. There is also the Revolver that is obtained by triggering the four Anima-related collectibles. Two of these collectibles are in Chapter 3, one is in Chapter 7, and the last one is in Chapter 11. You will receive the Revolver in Chapter 11 as long as you follow a collectibles guide, so you don’t have to worry about it. The Sniper Rifle is located on a rooftop near O'Neal's safehouse, and you must repair it by combining the Sniper Rifle with Sniper Rifle parts. The parts can be found inside of a shed around the north west area of the map.

  • "DIY" (craft something)
  • "Good to See You Again" (obtain the Warden Crossbow)
  • "Shock Therapy" (use a shock bolt to stun an enemy standing in a puddle of water)
  • "I Am The Night" (kill 10 enemies with sneak kills)
  • "Wait For It" (unlock the Ambush ability in the stealth tree, then perform Ambush on an enemy)
  • "Thinning Them Out" (kill 30 enemies)
  • "Backup Ain’t Coming" (complete the “Rogue Signal” side mission given by O’Neal)
  • "You Got Red in You" (use red gel to unlock more of Sebastian’s abilities)
  • "Making Things a Little Easier" (use a high-grade weapons part to upgrade a weapon)
  • "Taken" (story-related)
  • "Kick, Shoot, Burn" (kill 2 or more enemies at once by using oil)

Chapter 4

  • N/A

Chapter 5

  • "Not Running This Time" (defeat the Guardian boss)

Then reload a save, don’t kill the boss, and make it inside of City Hall to earn:

  • "Sometimes Fighting Isn’t the Answer"

Continue on and you will obtain this next achievement as long as you were following a collectibles guide:

  • "Doing Some Detecting" (collect 20 files)

Chapter 6

  • "Clearing a Path" (kill 60 enemies)
  • "The Team Psychologist" (story-related)

Chapter 7

In this chapter, make sure that you save Sykes in the parking lot and complete his “Out in the Open” and “Getting Back Online” side missions in order to complete “The Last Step” side mission in Chapter 13. Once you complete the “Getting Back Online” side mission in Chapter 7, Sykes will reward you with the Silenced Handgun, which you need for the “Powerhouse” achievement. In this chapter, you will also need to find the Full Barreled Shotgun, which can be found inside of a locked shed at the north east side of the map. To unlock the shed you must find a key on a corpse towards the south west corner of the map.

  • "Smoke Assassin" (kill 3 enemies with upgraded smoke bolts)
  • "Half the Stash" (open 16 lockers)

Chapter 8

  • "Premature Finale" (story-related)

Chapter 9

  • "Death From Above" (kill 2 or more enemies at once using a hanging lamp)

Chapter 10

  • "Bootable Offense" (kill 15 enemies by stomping on them – I personally unlocked this achievement naturally during the house defense section)
  • "Another Ally" (story-related)

Chapter 11

After unlocking the “Crossing to the Other Side” achievement, be sure to pick up the Flamethrower the boss was using. You will need to repair this Flamethrower by chapter the end of chapter 13, before talking to Hoffman and advancing towards Theodore's stronghold.

  • "Caffeine Addict" (use every coffee maker)
  • "Finally Free" (complete all anima event related collectibles)
  • "No More Playing With Fire" (destroy the fuel canister on the back of the boss during the boss fight)
  • "Crossing to the Other Side" (story-related)

Chapter 12

  • "Now You’re Playing With Power" (upgrade a weapon to level 3 - you may unlock this earlier or later, depending on when you decide to upgrade a weapon)
  • "Melancholy Memories" (in Sebastian’s house, interact with Lily’s drawings, Sebastian’s desk, and Myra’s certificates before touching the letter on the kitchen table)
  • "Spiritual Awakening" (story-related)

Chapter 13

Don’t forget to pick up the Assault Rifle. It’s right in front of you as soon as the chapter begins.

You will need to kill at least two of the three Harbinger enemies in this chapter (they use Flamethrowers). You can find the Harbingers roaming around Union. Upon defeating a Harbinger, they’ll drop one fuel tank. You need two fuel tanks in order to repair the Flamethrower you picked up back in Chapter 11. After acquiring two fuel tanks, head over to a workbench and repair the Flamethrower before Chapter 14.

Make sure that you complete “The Last Step” side mission for Sykes, as you will be rewarded with the Double-Barreled Shotgun. As soon as you complete the mission, enter the room that Sykes was in and open the case to find the Double-Barreled Shotgun.

  • "Sykes Out" (complete “The Last Step” side mission given by Sykes – you need to have completed the two side missions for Sykes in chapter 7 to gain access to this side mission)
  • "Chatting With Kidman" (find all photographic slides and talk to Kidman about them when you’re inside Sebastian’s office)
  • "Fire Walk With Me" (story-related)

Chapter 14

Avoid using any Flamethrower ammo that you have throughout the chapter. You’ll be needing Flamethrower ammo for one of the boss fights at the end of the chapter.

  • "Diligent Reader" (collect every file)
  • "Locksmith" (open every locker)
  • "I’ll Take You Down Myself" (defeat the Laura boss with the Flamethrower)

Chapter 15

  • "Overcome the Past" (story-related)

Chapter 16

  • "Everything Comes Crumbling Down" (story-related)
  • "Echoes Within STEM" (view every residual memory)

Chapter 17

  • "Unfortunate Consequence" (story-related)
  • "All in the Family" (collect every mysterious object)
  • "Against All Odds" (beat the game on Nightmare)
  • "Survivor" (beat the game on Survival)
  • "Rookie" (beat the game on Casual)
  • "Powerhouse" (acquire all standard weapons)

As long as you were playing on Nightmare difficulty, you will have unlocked the Brass Knuckles, which you needed for the “Powerhouse” achievement.

Playthrough #2 (Partial Playthrough): New Game+, gather enough gel and weapons parts to max out all weapon upgrades and abilities
In this playthrough, your goal is to completely upgrade every weapon and all of Sebastian’s abilities. If you missed any of the miscellaneous achievements outlined from playthrough #1 above, be sure to get those achievements during this playthrough.

  • "That Cinematic Feel…" (enable letterbox mode)
  • "Handyman" (craft every type of item)
  • "A Little Extra Kick to it" (upgrade one of the Warden Crossbow bolts to its max level)
  • "Stick it in My Veins" (completely upgrade all of Sebastian’s abilities)
  • "They Never Even Stood A Chance" (completely upgrade every weapon)

Playthrough #3: New Game on Classic Mode
Classic Mode is the same difficulty as Nightmare, but a few things have been altered. In Classic Mode, there are no autosaves or checkpoints. You only have seven manual saves that you can use across your entire playthrough. You cannot upgrade any of the weapons or Sebastian’s abilities. See the “You Asked For It… Again” achievement down below for more details regarding Classic Mode.

Mop-Up and Conclusion:
And with that, you should have the full 1000! Classic Mode has a few tricky situations, but it’s nothing that you can’t overcome, especially if you have already completed Akumu mode from the first Evil Within. While The Evil Within 2 marks a step down in difficulty compared to the original game, it does bring a few improvements when it comes to combat and overall performance. This is a completion that should pose some trouble for newcomers to survival horror, but with a little patience you can persevere. Veterans of the survival horror genre shouldn’t expect much difficulty at all in The Evil Within 2, and for the most part it’s just business as usual.

Completed the game on Casual difficulty or higher.

    See “Against All Odds” below.

  • Completed the game on Survival difficulty or higher.

    See “Against All Odds” below.

  • Completed the game on Nightmare difficulty or higher.

Nightmare difficulty is unlocked from the beginning. It’s strongly recommended that you set your first playthrough of The Evil Within 2 to Nightmare in order to practice for Classic Mode (if you intend to unlock every achievement in the game in as few playthroughs as possible).

Upon completing The Evil Within 2 for the first time, you’ll unlock Classic Mode, which is essentially Nightmare difficulty. However, autosaves and checkpoints are disabled in Classic Mode. You cannot upgrade any of Sebastian’s weapons or skills, and you are limited to a total of seven manual saves in Classic Mode.

See the “You Asked For It… Again” achievement down below for more information on Classic Mode.

  • Completed the "Rogue Signal" side mission.

This achievement can be obtained early on in chapter 3. Talk to O’Neal in his safehouse. When the dialogue tree comes up, pick the “Supplies?” option. From there, leave the safehouse and follow the waypoint. Use the communicator to track down the radio signals. After you follow the waypoint and complete the first signal, more signals will appear on the map. Head over to the locations as seen on the map and locate the source of the signals. Once you find the source of the signals, use the communicator on them. When you’re done, return to O’Neal and speak with him in order to complete the side mission.

Here is a video walkthrough of the “Rogue Signal” side mission, courtesy of PowerPyx:

  • Completed the "The Last Step" side mission.

This side mission has multiple steps across two different chapters. “The Last Step” side mission takes place during chapter 13, but in order to gain access to “The Last Step,” you must first rescue Sykes in the parking lot during chapter 7.

After you save Sykes in chapter 7, follow him to his safehouse. This will complete the “Out in the Open” side mission. Talk to Sykes in his safehouse in order to begin a new side mission called “Getting Back Online.” You’ll have to enter the Marrow and restart a server. Once that’s done, return to Sykes and go through all of his dialogue and you’ll complete the side mission.

As long as you completed “Out in the Open” and “Getting Back Online” in chapter 7, Sykes will call you through the communicator during chapter 13. This will add “The Last Step” to your objectives. Go to the safehouse Sykes was in and talk to him. You will need to access the Experimental Wing of the Marrow, turn the power on, and eliminate every enemy in the Experimental Wing in order to clear a way for Sykes. Once this is done, enter the Test Lab area in the Marrow and Sebastian will automatically call Sykes. A cutscene will take place. After the cutscene concludes, the achievement will unlock.

  • Experienced every traumatic encounter and made peace with your inner demons.

This achievement will unlock after triggering the four anima events in the game. The anima events are tied to specific collectibles. An anima event will happen when you pick up photographic slide #2 and the Woman’s Journal file in chapter 3, residual memory #12 in chapter 7, and Computer File: Pit Observatory in chapter 11. After gathering all four of these collectibles and completing the anima events, the achievement will unlock.

See the “Caffeine Addict” achievement below for a collectibles guide.

  • Used your first Red Gel.

See the “Stick it in My Veins” achievement below for more information.

  • Completely upgraded all abilities.

In order to upgrade Sebastian’s abilities, you must enter Sebastian’s office through one of the mirrors in the game world. By chapter 3, a wheelchair will appear down the hallway to the left of the workbench in Sebastian's office. Sit in the wheelchair and you will be able to upgrade Sebastian’s abilities.

You’re going to have to farm a ton of green gel through killing enemies, and you’ll also have to find some red gel scattered throughout the game. Fortunately, green gel is far more plentiful in new game +. Once you’ve completely upgraded everything in the health, athleticism, recovery, stealth, and combat skill trees, exit out of the upgrade menu and a small scene with Nurse Tatiana will play out. Once this scene is over, the achievement will unlock.

Here is a list of the locations where red gel can be found in the game:

    Chapter 3:

    • Look around the west side of the map at the very end of one of the train cars.
    • From the north safehouse on the map, follow the road east, then south, then east again. Enter a house and look in the garage for the “KCPD Request for Psychological Evaluation” collectible file. Pick up the file, then go back to the living room and interact with the television set. After the cutscene, the red gel spawns by the corpse next to the television.

    Chapter 4

    • At the end of the chapter before going up the ladder to fight the Guardian boss, there’s a little safehouse with a save point, a coffee maker, and a mirror. The red gel is right in front of the mirror.

    Chapter 6

    • This one is found in Hoffman’s safehouse, on a black couch.

    Chapter 8

    • Before the Stefano boss fight, look around the darkroom close to the mirror to find this red gel.

    Chapter 11

    • You’ll be chasing after Hoffman, but your progress is halted by a large door. You’ll need to find a Unity Cerebral Chip in order to continue beyond the door. From the large door, move right, then continue down the hall and enter Lab 1 on your left. Turn left and go through the double doors to find the red gel next to a body.

    Chapter 13

    • This is at the north east safehouse, right by the mirror.

    Chapter 14

    • Go past the area with one Harbinger and numerous Disciples. A gate will close behind you and you’ll move up a large winding staircase. Theodore will talk to you as you move up the stairs. At the top of the staircase you’ll see the red gel right in front of you on a small table.

    Chapter 16

    • This red gel is found at the last saferoom before the final boss. It’s right in front of the mirror.
  • Used your first High-Grade Weapon Parts.

See the “They Never Even Stood A Chance” achievement below for more information.

  • Upgraded a weapon to Level 3.

See the “They Never Even Stood A Chance” achievement below for more information.

  • Upgraded one of your Warden Crossbow bolts to max level.

See the “They Never Even Stood A Chance” achievement below for more information.

  • Completely upgraded all weapons.

To upgrade weapons, you must be at a workbench. Workbenches can be found at various locations throughout the game, but the workbench you’ll be visiting the most is the one that can be accessed at Sebastian’s office by using one of the mirrors.

You’re going to have to gather up a total of around 25,000 weapon parts. You’ll be needing a few high-grade weapon parts as well. Fortunately, weapon parts are plentiful in new game +, just like green gel. You must completely upgrade the Handgun, Shotgun, Sniper Rifle, Warden Crossbow, Assault Rifle, and Magnum.

For a list of the weapons that can be acquired in the game, see the “Powerhouse” achievement below.

Here is a list of the locations where high-grade weapon parts can be found in the game:

    Chapter 3:

    • The first one can be found at the end of one of the train cars on the west side of the map, hiding inside of some crates.
    • Another is located in the hidden supply cache underneath the Auto Repair Shop on the west side of the map. Go below ground, and when you get to the door that requires a security code, punch in "9676" on the security panel. Enter the door and you’ll find the parts inside a duffel bag to your right.
    • Your search for Lily will lead you to the large warehouse in the scrapyard. In the warehouse, head upstairs, then enter the first door on your left. The parts are sitting on the workbench.

    Chapter 6

    • Continue past Hoffman’s saferoom and leave the Marrow. You’ll have to go to Union: Post Plus. As soon as you arrive at Post Plus, turn around and the parts are in a duffel bag.

    Chapter 7

    • Save Sykes and complete his “Getting Back Online” side mission. Then go to the tool shed in the north east corner of the map where the Full Barreled Shotgun is found. The tool shed is locked, and you’ll need a storage key located on a body in the south west corner of the map. Once you’ve opened the tool shed with the storage key, go inside the tool shed and open the orange box. The parts are inside the orange box.

    Chapter 11

    • At the beginning of the chapter, go through the door by Torres. Then enter the door immediately on your right. A mirror will be here, and the parts are on a shelf to your left.
    • Soon after the previous part, you’ll be chasing after Hoffman. You’ll have to enter an elevator, but before going into the elevator, look to the room on the right. The parts will be in here.
    • After defeating the Harbinger boss, go through the door next to the boss and immediately turn to your right and you’ll see the parts on a table.

    Chapter 13

    • You need to have saved Sykes and completed his “Getting Back Online” side mission for these next two parts. Go inside the same exact tool shed where you found the high grade part in chapter 7 and open the same orange box again. There is another part here in the same exact location as the one in chapter 7.
    • This next part is in the same tool shed as the last part. Go to the back of the tool shed and it’s on the desk.

    Chapter 15

    • After the fog room/cutscene with Myra near the beginning of the chapter, go right and continue down the stairs. Go through the doorway next to the mirror and look to the ground on your right for the parts.
  • DIY

    10

Crafted something for the first time.

This achievement can be obtained once you reach O’Neal’s safehouse in chapter 3. Go to the workbench and craft an item. You must craft at least one of every type of item in the game for the “Handyman” achievement.

See the “Handyman” achievement below for the list of items you must craft and the materials that are required for each item.

  • Crafted every type of item at least once.

There are a total of thirteen different items to craft in the game. You cannot unlock this achievement until you’ve completed your first playthrough and entered new game +, as you need to craft Magnum ammo. You do not have access to the Magnum or Magnum ammo until you complete the game for the first time.

Most materials such as gunpowder can be scavenged from dead enemies. You can also find crafting materials hidden inside wooden crates or cabinets and drawers. It’s best to craft these items at a workbench so you don’t use up as many materials. You can craft items when you’re away from a workbench and out in the open if you want, but keep in mind that field crafting requires twice as many materials.

    Weapons & Ammo:

    • Handgun bullets (2 gunpowder)
    • Shotgun shells (5 gunpowder)
    • Sniper Rifle cartridges (7 gunpowder)
    • Assault Rifle cartridges (1 gunpowder)
    • Flamethrower fuel (1 gunpowder)
    • Magnum ammo (8 gunpowder)

    Crossbow Bolts:

    • Shock bolt (2 gunpowder, 1 fuse)
    • Smoke bolt (1 gunpowder, 1 smokepowder)
    • Explosive bolt (2 gunpowder, 1 nail)
    • Harpoon bolt (1 metal pipe)
    • Freeze bolt (2 gunpowder, 1 condenser)

    Health & Recovery:

    • Medical syringe (3 herbs)
    • Medical kit (5 herbs)
  • Observed all Residual Memories.

See the “Caffeine Addict” achievement below for more information.

  • Collected 20 files.

See the “Caffeine Addict” achievement below for more information.

  • Collected all files.

See the “Caffeine Addict” achievement below for more information.

  • Opened 16 lockers.

See the “Caffeine Addict” achievement below for more information.

  • Opened all lockers.

See the “Caffeine Addict” achievement below for more information.

  • Acquired the Warden Crossbow.

The Warden Crossbow can be found at the start of chapter 3. After speaking with O’Neal, leave his safehouse and head left. Follow the road all the way down until you see the large APC in the south west corner of the map. Behind the APC is the Warden Crossbow. Pick up the Warden Crossbow to unlock the achievement.

As soon as you obtain the Warden Crossbow, a cutscene will play where a car nudges into a fire hydrant. The fire hydrant breaks open, spraying water into a puddle on the road. Enemies will come running to the puddle. Once enemies are standing in the puddle of water, shoot the puddle with a shock bolt from the Warden Crossbow to stun the enemies and unlock the “Shock Therapy” achievement.

  • Talked to Kidman about all of the photographic slides.

See the “Caffeine Addict” achievement below for more information.

  • Acquired all standard weapons.

There are a total of fourteen different weapons to collect in The Evil Within 2.

This achievement must be done on either Nightmare difficulty or Classic Mode. Beating the game on Nightmare or Classic Mode will award you with the Brass Knuckles. You cannot obtain the Brass Knuckles by completing the game on Casual or Survivor difficulty.

Here are the weapons in the order they can be acquired:

    1) Survival Knife – Story-related and cannot be missed. Automatically received in chapter 2.

    2) Semi Automatic Handgun – Story-related and cannot be missed. Automatically received in chapter 2.

    3) Sniper Rifle – Upon leaving O’Neal’s safehouse at the start of chapter 3, look across the road to the tall building slightly to the left. There is a broken Sniper Rifle at the top of this building. Use the stairs and climb the ladder on the side of the building to reach the roof. Pick up the broken Sniper Rifle on the roof, then head to the upper north west corner of the map and locate a tool shed. Sniper Rifle parts can be found inside of the tool shed. Use the workbench and combine the broken Sniper Rifle with the Sniper Rifle parts to receive a functioning Sniper Rifle.

    5) Laser-Sighted Handgun – Found in chapter 3. Head to the west side of the map, around the middle. Enter the parking lot above the Auto Repair Shop and check one of the corpses in the parking lot to obtain this Handgun.

Laser-Sighted Handgun Location Video (Chapter 3)

    6) Sawed-Off Shotgun – Found in chapter 3 while doing the “Rogue Signal” side mission for O’Neal. It’s located in the Marrow: Armory underneath the Auto Repair Shop.

    7) Silenced Handgun – Save Sykes during chapter 7 and complete his “Getting Back Online” side mission. Once you complete the side mission, open the orange box inside of the safehouse Sykes is in and you’ll receive the Silenced Handgun.

Silenced Handgun Location Video (Chapter 7)

    8) Full-Barreled Shotgun – You can get this in chapter 7. It can be found in a tool shed in the north east corner of the map, just below the safehouse. You will need a key to open the tool shed. The key can be found on a body in the south west corner of the map. Once you have the key, return to the shed and open the door. In the back of the shed is a case, with the Full Barreled Shotgun sitting inside.

Full-Barreled Shotgun Location Video (Chapter 7)

    9) Revolver – Obtained by collecting the four anima event-related collectibles (“Finally Free” achievement). Once you pick up the fourth anima collectible in chapter 11, you’ll receive the Revolver. See the “Caffeine Addict” achievement below for a collectibles guide.

    10) Flamethrower – Pick up the broken Flamethrower after defeating the boss towards the end of chapter 11. Once you have his Flamethrower, you’ll need to repair it with two fuel tanks. You can obtain fuel tanks by killing two Harbinger enemies in Union during chapter 13. After you acquire two fuel tanks, go to a workbench and combine the broken Flamethrower with the two fuel tanks and you’ll have a working Flamethrower.

    Flamethrower Location Video (Chapter 11)

    11) Assault Rifle – It’s right in front of you at the very beginning of chapter 13.

    12) Double-Barreled Shotgun – In chapter 13, complete “The Last Step” side mission that is given by Sykes. You will only have access to this side mission if you rescued Sykes during chapter 7 and finished the “Getting Back Online” side mission. Upon completing “The Last Step” side mission, enter the room Sykes was in and open the case to acquire the Double Barreled Shotgun.

Double-Barreled Shotgun Location Video (Chapter 13)

    13) Magnum – Automatically received upon completing the game for the first time on any difficulty.

    14) Brass Knuckles – Automatically received upon completing the game on either Nightmare difficulty or Classic Mode.

  • Collected all of the Mysterious Objects.

See the “Caffeine Addict” achievement below for more information.

  • Used every Coffee Maker at least once.

In The Evil Within 2, there are 7 Coffee Makers, 8 Mysterious Objects, 11 Photographic Slide, 24 Residual Memories, 32 Keys, and 40 Files, adding up to a grand total of 122 collectibles overall. Finding all 122 collectibles in the game will unlock the following achievements:

    • Doing Some Detecting” (collect 20 files)
    • Half the Stash” (open 16 lockers)
    • Caffeine Addict” (use all coffee makers)
    • Finally Free” (complete all four anima events)
    • Chatting With Kidman” (find all photographic slides and talk to Kidman about them)
    • Diligent Reader” (collect every file)
    • Locksmith” (open every locker)
    • Echoes Within STEM” (viewed every residual memory)
    • All in the Family” (obtained every mysterious object)

None of the collectibles in the game are saved automatically as soon as you pick them up, so if you grab a collectible then die before reaching a checkpoint or creating a manual save, you’ll have to pick up the same collectible again. Your collectible progress will carry over through new game +, so if there was something that you missed in your initial playthrough, you can enter new game + and continue your collectible progress. Beware, there is no chapter select in The Evil Within 2, so if you do miss something you’ll have to go through the game from the very beginning, unless you happened to create a save point before the collectible you missed.

You should be able to kill far more than 60 enemies during your first playthrough of the game with no problems whatsoever. By the end of your first playthrough you’ll defeat hundreds of enemies, so this achievement will come naturally. I personally unlocked this during chapter 6.

  • Killed 3 enemies using upgraded Smoke Bolts.

You must upgrade your smoke bolts for the Warden Crossbow to at least “smoke bolt 3.” This makes it so that you can perform sneak kills upon enemies within the smoke bolt’s area of effect. Once you’ve upgraded your smoke bolts to “smoke bolt 3,” fire a smoke bolt at an enemy, then come up from behind the enemy and press to perform a sneak kill. Do this two more times and you will unlock the achievement. If you’re quick enough, you might be able to do this by using only one smoke bolt against a group of three enemies.

  • Stunned an enemy standing in water using a Shock Bolt.

The best way to obtain this achievement is as soon as you obtain the Warden Crossbow in chapter 3. Once you pick up the crossbow, a small cutscene plays where an earthquake happens and a car is nudged into a fire hydrant. The fire hydrant breaks and a ton of water spills onto the road, creating a puddle. Enemies will run over to investigate. Use this opportunity to fire a shock bolt at the puddle of water while the enemies are standing in the water. They’ll be stunned right away and the achievement will unlock.

  • Killed an enemy using an Ambush.

In order to obtain this achievement, you must purchase the “Ambush” skill for Sebastian. Once you start chapter 3, you can use one of the mirrors to return to Sebastian’s office. Go and sit in the wheelchair in Sebastian’s office, pick the stealth skill tree, spend 1,500 green gel to unlock “Low Profile 1,” and then spend an additional 3,000 green gel to unlock the “Ambush” skill above “Low Profile 1.”

Once you have “Ambush” unlocked, find an area with an enemy. Enter cover using and move to a corner. Wait for the enemy to patrol by the corner. Make sure that the enemy is in the middle of the screen so the sneak kill icon appears. Once the sneak kill icon is on the screen, press , and Sebastian will perform an ambush. You can do this achievement anywhere in the game once you have purchased the “Ambush” skill, but remember that you can’t perform a sneak kill if the enemy is alert and knows where you are.

  • Killed 2 or more enemies at once using oil on the ground.

One of the earliest locations to obtain this achievement is in the scrapyard during chapter 3. In the back of the scrapyard is a patch of oil. Lure some enemies to the patch of oil, then once the enemies are standing on the oil, use your Handgun to shoot the oil and light the enemies on fire.

Another good place to get this achievement is at the very beginning of chapter 10, during the house defense segment with Torres. Kick over the red barrel in the middle of the room, wait for the oil to spill out, then shoot at the oil once 2 or more enemies are grouped around it.

Here is a video guide from PowerPyx, showcasing where this achievement can be earned in chapter 3:

  • Stomped and killed 15 fallen enemies.

You can knock down enemies without killing them pretty easily by firing at them once or twice with the Sawed-Off Shotgun. Once the enemy has been knocked down, run over and press to stomp on them. I used the Sawed-Off Shotgun during the house defense section with Torres at the start of chapter 10 and unlocked this achievement there.

You could also use the shock bolts from the Warden Crossbow and fire the shock bolts at enemies standing on puddles of water throughout the game. This will stun and knock enemies down easily enough, then you can rush in and stomp on them while they’re still down.

  • Killed 10 enemies using Sneak Kills.

Simply sneak up on an enemy from behind, then press to perform a sneak kill once you are directly behind them. The game will teach you how to perform sneak kills during the end of chapter 2. The enemy must be unaware of your presence so you can kill them with a sneak kill. If the enemy has detected you, run away from them and break their line of sight. Eventually, the enemy will return to its original patrol route, so you can try to perform a sneak kill again. The achievement unlocks once you have killed 10 enemies with sneak kills throughout the course of the game. Stealth is very overpowered in The Evil Within 2, so use stealth to your advantage.

  • Avoided unnecessary bloodshed outside City Hall. (Ch. 5)

This achievement is obtained at the start of chapter 5. The Guardian boss will appear and block your entrance to City Hall. To earn this achievement, you cannot kill the Guardian. Instead, run over to the left of City Hall. Your path is obstructed by crates and red barrels. Shoot one of the red barrels. Continue around to the back of the building, avoiding tripwires and destroying more crates along the way. Eventually you’ll see a door. Shove open the door. The achievement unlocks once you make it inside of City Hall without killing the Guardian.

  • Killed 2 or more enemies at once using a hanging lamp. (Ch. 9)

As you make your way through chapter 9, you will need to find a crank handle as part of the story. Once you obtain the crank handle, some doors to a few cells will open and enemies will begin to freely roam around the area. Lure a couple of enemies to one of the hanging lamps. Once the enemies are underneath the lamp, shoot at the lamp. The lamp will fall and ignite any enemy that stood underneath the lamp.

  • Stopped a true believer from playing with his favorite toy. (Ch. 11)

This achievement must be obtained while fighting the Harbinger boss at the end of chapter 11. You must destroy the Flamethrower the boss is using. To do this, stun the Harbinger by using some freeze or shock bolts from the Warden Crossbow. Once the boss is stunned, use one of your Shotguns or the Sniper Rifle to shoot at the tank on the Harbinger’s back. Once you’ve done enough damage to the tank, it will explode, the Harbinger will no longer be able to use his Flamethrower, and you’ll unlock the achievement.

  • Reminisced about every moment from your past. (Ch. 12)

There is a flashback scene at the end of chapter 12 where Sebastian returns to his old home. During this scene, you must interact with Lily’s drawing near the top of the staircase. Then head to the door at the top of the stairs. Enter this door and interact with Sebastian’s desk. After this, go downstairs to the living room and interact with Myra’s certificates on the shelf. Make sure that you do not touch the letter on the kitchen table until you interact with Lily’s drawing, Sebastian’s desk, and Myra’s certificates. Once you have interacted with those three items, the achievement will unlock. When that’s done, you can collect the letter on the kitchen table and continue with the story.

  • Brought your own equipment to the barbecue this time. (Ch. 14)

This achievement has multiple steps that must be taken, starting at the end of chapter 11 once you defeat the Harbinger boss. Upon killing the Harbinger boss at the end of chapter 11, pick up his broken Flamethrower. You will need to repair it.

In order to repair the Flamethrower, you must gather two fuel tanks. These fuel tanks can be obtained by killing at least two of the three Harbinger enemies that roam Union in chapter 13. Upon killing one of these Harbingers, loot their body to receive a fuel tank. Kill another Harbinger for another fuel tank. Once you have two fuel tanks, go to a workbench and combine the broken Flamethrower with the two fuel tanks to receive a functioning Flamethrower.

At the end of chapter 14, you must use the Flamethrower to perform the killing blow against Laura. You can use the fire trap in the room only once to do some initial damage, but using the fire trap a second time after the trap resets will kill Laura. She must be killed with your Flamethrower. Once Laura has been defeated with the Flamethrower, the achievement will unlock.

Secret achievements

  • Completed the game in Classic Mode.

Classic Mode is locked from the start of the game and cannot be unlocked until you have completed The Evil Within 2 at least once on any difficulty. Classic Mode is the same difficulty as Nightmare, but this time around there are no autosaves or checkpoints, and you are given only seven manual saves to use throughout your entire Classic Mode playthrough. You will not be able to upgrade any of Sebastian’s weapons or abilities.

I would recommend that you spread your seven saves across the following locations:

    • End of chapter 4/very beginning of chapter 5, before encountering the Guardian boss outside of City Hall
    • In the darkroom during chapter 8 before the Stephano boss fight
    • During the end of chapter 9 (right after you solve the puzzle on the floor and the gate opens, do not proceed through the gate, but go back the way you initially came where a mirror can be found and save inside Sebastian's office)
    • End of chapter 11 after defeating the Harbinger boss
    • Just before pushing Theodore’s stronghold with Hoffman at the end of chapter 13 (when talking to Hoffman in the Sanctuary Hotel, say "No, not ready yet" when the dialogue option appears, then enter the mirror and save in Sebastian's office)
    • Towards the end of chapter 14 before fighting the Sadist/three Keepers/Laura
    • Before the final boss fight in chapter 16, at the last safe room

Try to look for some locker keys as you make your way through Classic Mode. Lockers will provide crafting materials and additional ammo if you need it, so locker keys can be a great backup. Conserve ammo and use stealth in situations with common enemies so you can avoid unnecessary conflict. Take advantage of stealth kills when you can, but don’t try to be too aggressive if it has been a while since your last save.

When I played Classic mode, the weapons I primarily used were the Semi-Automatic Handgun, the Sniper Rifle, the Warden Crossbow, and the Sawed-Off Shotgun.

For an abbreviated walkthrough for this achievement, refer to the following post.

    Classic Mode Abbreviated Walkthrough

    Patch 1.05:
If you are using the invincibility cheat for assistance during your Classic Mode playthrough, remember that there are a few spots where you can be killed instantly despite enabling invincibility. These situations are as follows:

    Chapter 2:
    - Once you see Stefano kill for the first time and the game introduces cover mechanics, it's possible to die if you leave cover here and Stefano sees you
    - Guardian (red hallway, after leaving the vents) can kill you if you don't run away from it
    - Guardian (same area as above, right after Stefano throws the knife at Sebastian) can kill Sebastian during a QTE sequence where you must tap the A button repeatedly. Failing the QTE results in death.

    Chapter 6:
    - The Watcher can kill you in the Marrow tunnels (like I mentioned in the OP) but not during the initial encounter where it's possible to sneak around it or fight it. There's a moment just after the initial Watcher encounter where Sebastian opens a set of doors, but one of the Watcher's arms grabs Sebastian from behind, and you have to shoot the Watcher in the face five times before it can eat Sebastian (this part has really weird sensitivity when it comes to aiming the pistol, but at least you have infinite ammo for a brief moment).

    Chapter 8:
    - Before the boss fight with Stefano in this chapter, there's a part where you have to stay out of Aperture's (the giant camera/tentacle thing) line of sight, represented by blue light. If Aperture spots you, then you have an extremely short window of time to get back in cover, but if you don't find cover then Aperture quickly squashes Sebastian in a cutscene, resulting in a game over.

    Chapter 14
    - During the confrontation with the Sadist (chainsaw wielding character), you have to run away. If you stand still or don't run away then the Sadist will kill you.
    - There's a little QTE battle with the Sadist shortly after the moment you run away from him. You need to tap the A button to win the QTE battle or else you'll be killed.

    Chapter 16:
    - In the final boss battle, after you shoot off one of the boss' shoulders, there's a moment where the detached arm grabs Sebastian and you have to shoot the glowing spot on the arm four or five times to free yourself. If you don't do this in time then the boss will kill you (this is similar to the moment where you can be killed by the Watcher in chapter 6).

    Chapter 17:
    - Even with the invincibility cheat enabled, I still took damage during the final shooting gallery section with Kidman, oddly enough. It's possible to die here if you're a really bad shot or if you spend too much time out of cover, but you have to spend a LOT of time out of cover in order to be killed during this sequence.

This should cover most, if not every scenario where it is possible to be killed while having invincibility turned on. If there was something I missed, then leave a response to me in this thread and I will update the guide.

  • Took the plunge back into STEM.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

This achievement unlocks about halfway through chapter 2, once you enter Union after you finish talking to Kidman.

  • Taken

    10

    Saw a chilling vision.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

This achievement unlocks towards the end of chapter 3, after encountering the Myra doll.

  • Defeated the Guardian outside City Hall.

This achievement can be unlocked towards the beginning of chapter 5.

Try to bait the Guardian towards the traps scattered around the area. Get the Guardian close to the red explosive barrels or oil puddles, then shoot the barrels or puddles with your Handgun to do some additional fire/explosive damage. You can also use shock bolts with the Warden Crossbow in order to stun the Guardian and slow it down. Use everything you have at your disposal in order to defeat the Guardian.

After you kill the Guardian, reload an older save. Do not kill the Guardian. Instead, run around to the left side of the City Hall. Destroy the crates and watch out for the explosive traps. Enter the door at the back of the building. This will skip the boss fight and you will unlock the “Sometimes Fighting Isn’t the Answer” achievement.

  • Found a potential ally in The Marrow.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

This achievement unlocks during the second half of chapter 6, after encountering Hoffman for the first time.

  • Shut down a bloody performance.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

This achievement unlocks upon defeating the boss at the end of chapter 8.

  • Survived an ordeal with the help of a new friend.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

This achievement unlocks during chapter 10, after defending the house with Torres.

This achievement unlocks at the very end of chapter 13/at the start of chapter 14.

  • Your trauma is no more.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

This achievement unlocks right at the beginning of chapter 15.

  • Reached the very end of the world.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

This achievement unlocks at the very beginning of chapter 16.

  • Did what needed to be done to save your daughter.

    Story-related and cannot be missed.

This achievement unlocks at the start of chapter 17.

  • Opted for a cinematic experience.

After you beat the game for the first time, you will have the option to turn on letterbox mode in the settings. Go to the options settings in the main menu, scroll down and select HUD Display Settings, then scroll down to the letterbox option. Use right or left on the d-pad to change the letterbox setting from hide to show. Then start a new game and the achievement should unlock straight away. If you go into new game +, the achievement might take a while to unlock. I went into new game + but the achievement didn’t pop up until I reached Union in the second half of chapter 2.
