Following last night's gameplay reveal, and confirmation that Alan Wake will be joined by FBI agent Saga Anderson (played by Game of Thrones, This Is Us, and Bad Boys 4 actor Melanie Liburd) as a fellow playable character, developer Remedy Entertainment has now confirmed that Alan Wake II will be a digital-only release.

“There are many reasons for this. For one, a large number of have shifted to digital only. You can buy a Sony PlayStation 5 without a disc drive and Microsoft’s Xbox Series S is a digital only console. It is not uncommon to release modern games as digital-only,” Remedy states in an FAQ.

“Secondly, not releasing a disc helps keep the price of the game at $59.99/€59.99 (£49.99) and the PC version at $49.99/€49.99 (£39.99),” the studio add. “Finally, we did not want to ship a disc product and have it require a download for the game — we do not think this would make for a great experience either.”

There are no plans for a disc-based release for Alan Wake 2 at all, then, although the digital release will come in Standard Edition and Deluxe Edition flavours, the latter bundling the game with the Expansion Pass (granting access to the Night Springs Expansion and Lake House Expansion), a Nordic Shotgun Skin for Saga (included in the Expansion Pass), a Parliament Shotgun Skin for Alan, a Crimson Windbreaker for Saga, Celebrity Suit for Alan, and Lantern Charm for Saga.

The Alan Wake II Deluxe Edition will cost $79.99/€79.99/£64.99 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC, with pre-orders giving you an Ornate Revolver Skin for Alan and Survival Resources Pack for Saga. Alan Wake II is out on 17th October 2023.

  • Lame
  • I never meant to go digital but I apparently have. RD2 and REmake 3 are the only disk games I’ve gotten for years.
  • Haven’t bought a physical game for over a decade now.

No big deal to me, just want to play it.
  • "not releasing a disc helps keep the price at $59.99"

So don't forget to buy the $80 version with the content they purposely left out. Oh, right... and you get a couple of skins. ::rolls eyes::
  • @3

Last game I bought a physical box for the the DICE Battlefront 1, and it was just a download code, lol.
  • Discs have 0 content on anyway. Who cares.
  • Another step in the wrong direction
  • Haven't bought a physical copy since Resident Evil 7. Just no need for it anymore. People need to get with the times and stop hanging onto the past.
  • No thanks. Not payin £50 that can be taken away with zero notice. Oh and announcing a season pass months before release will ALWAYS scream greedy and cash grab to me. Hope it bombs.
  • Keep the cost down but, still give us the 10 dollar console tax.

    Lame.
