E3 2023 Has Been Cancelled

Richard Walker

E3 2023 has been cancelled, following a number of major publishers choosing not to attend the event, which had been scheduled for June.

Most recently, Ubisoft announced that it will be skipping E3 altogether in favour of its own Ubisoft Forward broadcast on 12th June, with SEGA and Tencent subsidiary Level Infinite, swiftly following suit.

Nintendo also confirmed it wasn't going to have a presence at E3, and both Sony and Microsoft were rumoured to be giving the show a wide berth. The event was due to be a “reshaping” of the beleaguered expo, with PAX and NY Comic Con organiser ReedPop taking the reins, alongside the ESA.

According to a message from the ESA, received by IGN, E3 2023 “simply did not garner the sustained interest necessary to execute it in a way that would showcase the size, strength, and impact of our industry.”

Apparently, ReedPop and the ESA expressed interest in working together again on "future E3 events”, suggesting that the new organisers haven't quite given up on it just yet. As for E3 2023, however, that one will no longer take place.

E3 2023 had been scheduled for 13th to 16th June as the first in-person form it's taken since 2019, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.

  • Noo i wanted to see games what would not release for another 7 years then release broke
  • final nail...
  • What a let down honestly the best thing from E3 was everyone coming together for a week to showcase their games and just be a wholesome event, all gamers can enjoy, it was more about the unity than the games, this will be beyond missed
  • Damn, end of an era. E3 used to be the big gaming event I always looked forward to when I was in my teens. I also kind of prefer it to what we get now because you knew it was just a dedicated weekend of each major publisher showing off new games. Now there’s just loads of different events to keep track of. In a way I guess that’s also a positive since you’re getting new announcements every other month rather than just waiting for that once a year hit. Still, it shall be missed
  • @4 E3 was just an outdated concept. Why would companies pay to showcase there, when they can do it on their own.

E3 will just need to be that nostalgic positive memory we have of days past. Like gaming magazines and old engines. I know that digital versions of games is the better options, I will always have positive memories of going to game stores and rental stores with my now deceased mother. It is some of my most fond memories with here.
  • I always found these events so pointless. Even the ones that major companies put on themselves are completely pointless, in my opinion.

Most times, the games showcased are simply reveal trailers or trailers with zero in-game footage. It's always doctored up cinematic videos that is never representative of the actual game with some person telling you all of the insanely revolutionary things the game is capable of doing, which will turn out to be a lie, for a game that is set to release years from when the reveal/announcement was made.
  • So long to the biggest false advertising video game show of all time.

They could always just save a shit load of money and not pay for any venues at all and use the technology of the day called YouTube to showoff your false advertisements
  • I will miss it for sure. Never attended, always wanted to. But now that I can finally afford it everyone is looking to save money… if only that money saved went towards employees instead of another money making scheme… Oh well, not all hope is lost yet, but definitely not seeing this coming back:-(
