Mass Effect 3 'Omega' Story DLC Incoming, Another Full Mass Effect Game and a New Next-Gen IP on the Cards

Richard Walker

With yesterday's announcement that BioWare's co-founders Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka will be retiring from the company they built together, BioWare General Manager, Aaryn Flynn issued a statement regarding the future of the developer and its franchises, including Mass Effect.

While we noted that Mass Effect 3 will be getting single-player story DLC in the form of the Omega add-on coming this fall, we didn't really draw as much attention to it within the news piece as we should have. So, here it is in full, from Aaryn Flynn's statement:

"Executive Producer Casey Hudson and his team are coming off an amazing eight-year run with the Mass Effect trilogy. But they’re not done yet. We are releasing more multiplayer content and we have more single-player stories coming throughout the next six months, including Omega which is coming in the Fall. But the Mass Effect universe is vast, and Casey and our teams have plans for another full game. “Where to go next?” with such a project has been a question a lot of us have been asking, and we’d all love to hear your ideas."

That's right. BioWare is planning another full Mass Effect game, while Casey Hudson and his team are also "putting together their vision for an all new game set in a fictional universe, built from the bottom-up with all new gaming technology." A new next-gen BioWare IP? Yup.

Exciting stuff.

  • Awesome. But it sucks that it won't be a ME4, because that means we won't be able to transfer our saves. It's probably a prequel playing as someone else. Also, Omega is EXACTLY the DLC I wanted. Actually, it's something I assumed would have been in the full game, but better late than never I guess.
  • I remember someone from Bioware saying we should hold onto our saves just in case. You never know.
  • I back #1. Taking back Omega should have been in the full game. I wonder what this new IP is?
  • I can't say I'm excited for it, say what you will, I thought the series has lost a bit of the soul that made it great. Take for examle, the removal of the Mako and it's exploration, only to be replaced by one of the most tedious mini-games, I've ever had the displeasure of actually playing. It just seems like another money making scheme right now to me.
  • So they're making another game even though they have no idea what to do with it?
  • @#3 um they said it was a new Mass Effect game
  • @6: Yeah, a new Mass Effect game, but also a new 'next-gen IP'. Right there at the bottom of the article.
  • Holy shiite here we go again, still haven't played Leviathan now this. Fare to say my second playthrough is gonna be epic with these dlc's. Shall wait for the full game lol.
  • I can't wait for a new Mass Effect game, and if they can capture the essence of the original, then I have no problems. An excellent trilogy, with ME2 being the worst in the trilogy due to stripped back RPG elements over shooting, but still great. I like Bioware and all their games and Mass Effect is still one of the best RPG's of all time.
  • @9 Mass Effect? One of the greatest RPGs of all time? Pffffffthahahahaha.
  • What if the next-gen game is Knights of the Old Republic 3?! :D Hey, I can hope right? Anyway I love Mass Effect and would love to have another game. I'm thinking it would have to be a prequel since the Reapers are gone now right? Unless they didn't all get wiped out or there's something even worse. Maybe like an entire race that controlled the Reapers, that would be really hard to do though since the reapers were such a big threat. I guess it could still work if the Alliance and everyone else has used reaper technology to improve their weaponry, ships, and equipment though.
  • @7 I'd take that last part of the article as speculation and with a massive pinch of salt. Bioware did not explicitly say it's going to be next-gen, and while it would be nice to know we're going to be greeted with a new ME game on the next cycle, it could just mean a brand new engine and coming this cycle. We'll see I guess.
  • can't wait for the omega dlc but first and foremost they need to give me a krogan squad mate for fuck sake!!!
  • @10, I said one of the best not the greatest. You can't even get your wording correct when atticking someones opinion.
  • And it appears I can't spell attacking correctly either, lol.
  • @1 id keep your save anyway, dragon age has different player characters in each but still does the save transfer like mass effect to build he back story from what you did and to allow survivors to meet with your new character
  • Awesome!
  • Great, I just hope it's not going to be one of those PC only MMO type things, Mass Effect started on the xbox so it should stay
  • "while Casey Hudson and his team are also "putting together their vision for an all new game set in a fictional universe, built from the bottom-up with all new gaming technology." Isn't it likely that this is in fact referring to the new Dragon Age: Inquisition game that they announced, which is apparently going to be using Frostbite 2.0? Just a thought.
  • It says 'an all new game set in a fictional universe'. It doesn't mention that it's a new IP at all.
  • Awesome! Regardless of the ending controversy, ME has been one of my favorite RPG series. Ever since I read the preview in Game Informer years ago. I'm looking forward to more ME titles, hopefully a strategy title similar to Halo Wars. I'm also pretty excited about Bioware's new IP.
  • @19 Given that Dragon Age 3 was announced prior to this statement, and the fact that Hudson has had no involvement in any of the Dragon Age games, I doubt that's what it's referring to.
  • Sounds like the cow is ringing its bell.
  • There are so many possibilities that they have for this game franchise it can go off into other genre's of games or stay the way it is there is a huge universe to cover and a big time line they can use. Mass effect can spin off into anything if they do it right.
  • Any more mass effect is good! me and my friend love playing the series! more time to play with them :D as for the new IP they did mention to hold onto the me3 saves.. so.. yeah cool! im keen for more content.. single or multi! i love the mass effect universe!
  • Do people not understand what a new IP is? Interactive Property. When someone says NEW IP, it means this new IP will not be set within the bounds of any existing Franchise. So this new IP(I understand they didn't explicitly say new IP) will not be Mass Effect. I repeat this NEW IP will not be Mass Effect or Dragon Age. Probably not Knights of the Old Republic either.
  • @27 Intellectual Property
  • @11 I actually think they will make a sequel to Mass Effect 3. If they plan on using the universe at any point in the future, they need to establish a canon of how the relays are restored (or the new tech that allows travel) in the ME universe. I could see a sequel covering this. Besides, with the reapers gone, the species (ahem *Batarian assholes*) are bound to start fighting once again. Hell, they barely managed to stop long enough to fight the reapers. Creating a ME4 explaining the post-reaper relations/traveling/etc could bring about a clear ending to the Shepard/Reaper story arc and allow for any number of new spin-offs/storylines to be created once the galaxy has recovered/stabilized.
  • @#28: Nitpicking, but IP is intellectual property, and it's not limited to just video games; any work of fiction can be considered to be an IP. The rest of your explanation is on target, though. I can only speculate what the new IP will be. Whatever it is, as long as vital plot details aren't written just by Hudson and Walters like the original abomination of an ending for ME3, it should be fine.
  • Well if it's a next-gen game I'll be fine with that because I don't plan on getting a new console. I'm fine with leaving the franchise the way it is, with a dead Shepard and no more reapers. I'll finish off the DLC and that's going to be about it. @9 ME2 was my favourite of the series, sure in terms of RPG elements it was really dumbed down, however the story was much more engaging and I enjoyed getting to know your squadmates a bit more intimately, and getting in depth with their backgrounds. Overall ME has been my favourite trilogy. I loved the overall story, characters, etc. Thanks Bioware. Too bad you're pretty much dead now.
  • Just let it die... The series has taken the worst turns... It sucks now
  • @31 i agree it was my fav to, the RPG elements may have been dumbed down to idiotic levels but the actual story and the ending in particular were brilliant only part i really hated with 2 was the stupid planet scanning
  • Cool. I hope it's an existing character on ME3. Instead of a new one.
  • I'd like to play a reaper for a change,m destroying universes and civilizations. That would be a fun thing to play, but doubt it will ever happen=)
  • Sounds good.
  • With the amount of talk of Mass Effect being a trilogy from Bioware, if they decide to make a Mass Effect 4, then my opinion will have changed from being indifferent to flipping them the middle finger.
  • The GM of Bioware's last name is Flynn?!? Everyone!! We WILL be ok! I love that company.
  • @11 "What if the next-gen game is Knights of the Old Republic 3?! :D Hey, I can hope right? " it's not. it explicitly says a NEW next gen ip. kotor is an old ip. this will be something completely original.
  • Replaying ME series for the 4th time this year, (my ME total is over 10 on it's own!) so more DLC is worthwhile to me. Looking forward to taking back Omega.
  • For a new Mass Effect, make it an MMORPG type. They have alot of characters and worlds, the multiplayer looks like an MMO (only not exacly) and each character has their own powers. So might as well go for it. Just dont make us pay each month.
  • @#15 Good job failing there.
  • Wait.. i did read that... Omega dlc for ME3... A new ME game... AND a new ip... 3 treats in one.
  • I totally called it. When I first met Aria in the bar on the Citadel I was wondering when she was going to have me help her retake Omega. Then when it didn't happen I got that sinking feeling in my stomach that Bioware was going to release it as DLC, just like how the Lair of the Shadow was clearly set up in game, but put off until after the game already came out.
  • @44 You and pretty much anyone else who played the game called it! @37 Whilst that may have been the original plan, I'm pretty sure that the idea evolved to it being Shepard's trilogy with scope for further games set in the vast ME universe for other characters. Don't think anyone at Bioware or EA will lose any sleep about your changing of opinion. Personally, I'm more a sci-fi fan than fantasy so the ME trilogy is one of the most engaging stories I've experienced in a computer game. It certainly wasn't perfect but I'm happy to hear that we can expect more from the universe.
  • About time. Really pissed me off that Omega wasn't part of th emains tory. Hope kicking Cerberus all over the largest hive of scum and villainy is worth the wait. Personally, the only way I'll be satisfied is if you get Aria for a temp squadmate.
