id Software's co-founder and technical virtuoso John Carmack has joined the Oculus Rift team as Chief Technology Officer, having been involved with the VR headset tech early on in its production.

Carmack has also been a proponent and pioneer of virtual reality hardware for years, being the first developer to add Oculus Rift functionality into a game. He'll work alongside Oculus Rift's development team at its offices in Dallas, although he'll apparently still hold his role at id Software.

"John has long been interested in the work at Oculus VR and wishes to spend time on that project. The technical leadership he provides for games in development at id Software is unaffected," a Bethesda representative told Gamasutra. An Oculus spokesperson also told the site that "he's full-time at Oculus VR," so we don't know who to believe. It seems Carmack is dividing his time three ways.

"My time division is now Oculus over Id over Armadillo. Busy busy busy!" Carmack tweeted. Will this have an impact on id's long-mooted Rage follow-up and Doom 4? Probably not, but it's worth noting nonetheless.

  • doom 4 would be awesome with the oculus rift imo :)
  • As cool as this might be, you still look like a knob with it strapped to your face.
  • No guy would be better for the job. And remember; he's also Armadillo Aerospace's founder and lead engineer.
  • Been thinking about grabbing a dev-kit for OR, might have to take the plunge, looks like things might shape up...
  • I'm still really hoping that they announce a Rift headset for the X1 at some point. This seems like something that Microsoft would want to get behind, especially if they can get it exclusively, or at the very least get it a long time before Sony gets it for the PS4.
  • @5 I wouldn't be surprised if this came to next Gen consoles. The makers of Oculus Rift said that they would love to see it on the X1 and PS4. What I would love to see on the X1 is the Illumiroom. That sounded kind of cool and interesting.
  • Well Doom 3 already supports along with Valve so that can only be a good thing. I was just reading article about this the other day. Hopefully this will become mainstream and accessible price wise in years to come unlike that shitnect MS is pushing=)
  • Sounds like they're really serious about this thing. If so they're gonna have to bring the price down, £200 for an accessory is way to steep, especially if you factor the fact that probably less than 5% of games will actually be able to use it. If they do bring the price down (say £100-£120) and make it for X1 then I'll definitely be getting it.
  • Now I understand why he shitted on kinect some days ago
  • I like John. He's forever looking ahead. I don't care what people said, I loved Rage. It played great and looked fantastic. I would have loved to see more games use its engine.
  • I really rate John Carmack, always looking forward in new innovative directions. His engines are top notch too. The Quake 3 engine is still one of biggest technological jumps for it's time.
  • chief technology officer? so does that make him 'oculus prime'?
