The voice actor Elias Toufexis was sacked from a role playing the protagonist in Far Cry 3, because Ubisoft feared that players would confuse him with Deus Ex’s Adam Jensen.

Toufexis had been working recording the voice of Far Cry 3’s Jason Brody for two years, but when Deus Ex: Human Revolution launched in August 2011 and subsequently became a hit, Ubisoft got scared that the two character's voices were too similar.

Speaking at the MCM Comic Con in London, on the X360A and PS3T Games Stage, Toufexis explained how the popularity of Deus Ex and the distinctive nature of his voice had “lost me jobs.”

“In fact, I shouldn’t say this, but there’s a game called Far Cry 3, which I’m sure you guys know, where I had played Jason Brody,” said Toufexis. “I played him for two years, did the voice and when Deus Ex came out they replaced me because they were nervous that… ‘we don’t want people playing this game and thinking of another game.’

“It’s justifiable,” he added, “it’s understandable, but my normal voice is what I used for that character too. So now it’s like I’m losing work because Jensen is so popular.”

Look out for the full Elias Toufexis interview going up on the site later today.

  • Yeah cause that's hurt every game with Nolan North's VA.
  • And yet Nolan North and Jennifer Hale continue to get work.
  • Guy is a great voice actor, real shame Ubisoft were such dicks about it.
  • He voiced Kobin in Splinter Cell Blacklist I recognized his voice immediately and thought of jenson. Both great games, great voice actor
  • Troy Baker, Nolan North, Jennifer Hale, Steve Blum, Laura Bailey, Robert Atkin Downes, Tara Strong, etc. would all like a word with Ubisoft...
  • Would love to hear some of the old voice recordings from the game. At least we got a couple funny videos with him and Vaas so not a total loss
  • "I never asked for this..."
  • Unusual name he has, anybody know where he is from?
  • @8 Montreal, Quebec.
  • I'm heartbroken...really I am...
  • I see ubiosft didn't fire nolan north when he used the same voice for desmond and nathan drake.
  • UbiSoft are pretty weird when it comes to voice actors then.
  • @11: Don't forget his New Yorker accent in Prince of Persia, the technicolor edition.
  • Yeah well, when I played Catherine, hearing Troy Baker's voice obviously reminded me of his work in Saints Row 3, but it's not like I was thinking of that the entire time. I mean sure, Adam Jensen is pretty much his defining role because of how unique his voice is, as well as how well he played the part. But just because a voice actor reminds you of something else the voice actor was in, doesn't mean that's a negative. I've seen some people buy a game with the voice actors of a game in mind, because they know beforehand who the voice actors are, and have a good idea of the quality of the voice acting. To me, it seems like another factor that would go in to how a consumer picks a game to buy; and in no way a negative. What a shame.
  • What would actors do if producers thought the same way?
  • What kind of reasoning is that? "This game is pretty great so f--wait, is that Adam Jensen's voice? But it's not Adam Jensen? Nah, I'm done with this piece of shit."
  • To be fair to everyone discussing Nolan North, Jennifer Hale, Troy Baker, and Laura Bailey. Yes they are in A TON of stuff, but the thing is they can mask their voices and change their voices so that you don't even recognize who they are. Elias Toufexis (while not meaning any offense to the man) may not be able to mask his voice enough to avoid sounding like the same person.
  • Someone needs to get hold of those files (they must exist somewhere)and Mod a Far Cry 3 Adam Jenson Edition
  • To be honest though... I really can't imagine Jason's voice being like Adam Jenson's. The guy sounds kinda like Clint Eastwood
  • Would Brody still have been a whiny gimp with Toufexis reading?
  • @21 Hell yeah, thanks to the awful script.
  • Thats just his NORMAL voice??? God he must be a god to talk to
  • I don't blame them. I agree with Ubisoft on this one. I can't tell you how irritating it gets when you hear the same voice actor again and again. Steven Blum is a good example. His voice is cool the first time, then it gets SO ANNOYING.
  • Good, he sounds the same in every game he's in
  • What a shame. The man is a great voice actor
  • I know I always get confused about which games Nathan Drake and Desmond Miles are in.
  • guess he can be in far cry 4 now
  • I don't get it, why does it matter, I didn't watch Avengers and keep expecting Nick Fury to pull out a purple lightsaber...
  • Meh. Just put Vaas' voice actor in more games. That dude ruled.
  • pretty drastic decision by Ubisoft, sure Deus Ex sold well but it's not like the voice actor has a recognisable voice like David Hayter.
  • Ubisoft, stop being dumbasses.
  • @33 Are you sure your neighbour's mother-in-law isn't being paid $67 hourly to sit on someone's lap--topless? Ba-dum ching!
  • and he is who? man up learn new accents to switch it up
  • just before I looked at the receipt which said $6907, I did not believe that my best friend woz like they say truley taking home money part time at their computer.. there great aunt has done this 4 only about and resently repayed the loans on there house and purchased Maserati. • johnny yong bosch from trigun sounds the same in everything and i dont get sick of him...
  • Such a shame. He was great as Adam Jenson. Surely he could have tweaked his voice a little?
