John Carmack Resigns From id Software

Lee Bradley

Legendary programmer John Carmack has left id Software, the company he founded in 1991 alongside John Romero, Tom Hall and Adrian Carmack.

“John Carmack, who has become interested in focusing on things other than game development at id, has resigned from the studio,” said studio director Tim Willits,. “John’s work on id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects.

“We are fortunate to have a brilliant group of programmers at id who worked with John and will carry on id’s tradition of making great games with cutting-edge technology. As colleagues of John for many years, we wish him well.”

Carmack will now be able to concentrate fully on his role as CTO at Oculus VR, the creators of Oculus Rift. His legacy at id includes titles like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake and Rage.

  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Worst news ever! On a side note, where's Doom 4? :/
  • Wow. Can't believe he actually left. The godfather of the FPS and smartest man in the industry. The guys a rocket scientist too lol
  • Sucks that he left id but the fact that he's now completely devoted to the Oculus Rift pleases me. I want VR so bad.
  • one true leader he is one of the best No JC No Doom No Doom No FPS No FPS No Call Of Duty Thanks John lol
  • i ment that as a joke COD sucks DOOM is the true god ID TECK is great Rage is great and OR will be good yes
  • Fuck Doom, gimme another Rage!
  • Good. Id Software have been stuck in the 20th century for so long. It was time for a change.
  • I know this is off topic I'm sorry but does anyone know how to turn off Xbox One controller vibration?
  • I have headaches when I using my 3DS, I'd imagine VR will make me implode.
  • "John Carmack says thats kinect 2 sucks, ANYTHING would be better than kinect" Awesome Dude!
  • Honestly, the best thing would be if Occulus Rift made their own variant of the Kinect. The Kinect on a console is stupid. But a Kinectlike could pair up with the Rift so much better, to make VR a reality. Where the OR is your "eyes" and the hands, legs, head, neck, mouth, etc. are your controller via the camera. Like even from a sitting position, you could bounce your knees up and down to walk/run. I give it a good ten years and that might be where we end up. I love controllers, but it's time to evolve them. That Steam Controller is a decent first step, to have that mouselike precision that would be like night and day for console shooters.
  • @11 the Kinect is already being used on rift accessory prototypes I hope this isn't the end of his talks at QuakeCon
  • Good luck on your new project Mr Carmack. Without you doom 4 would have already been out as generic 7-8 hour fps with bad AI companions and all of those generic shooter mechanics, Quote "rechargeable health and a turret section thrown in". Allowing a decision this bad to be carried out would have ruined id software and doom for good. I hope the good sense you have shown time and again serves you well in making game goggles a viable option, because you are going to need it. Best wishes from myself and anyone who has enjoyed your brilliant games.
  • Yeah, great the guy at the origin of 3D shooter leaves Id. The genre that killed all the others. why should we care ?
  • @15 We should care because the man is a genius, one of the brightest and most respected members of the industry, and despite the fact that id has only made two games in the past decade and a half, anyone who denies the influience he and his company has made on the video game industry is nothing but a fool. its sad to see the last founding member of id software leave the company, but I see many great things in the future coming from this dude. Carmack is a role model for any aspiring game designer and I wish he the best of luck treading new ground in VR game design.
  • its hard to be sad about it when hes moving on to the next revolutionary leap in first person gaming , honestly he is the kinda guy you want overlooking this
  • @16 agree, he's one of the reasons I got into Games, into Games Design, it's just shame he left but I guess he had to leave eventually but it does make me concerned for the future of Id Software.
  • I'd pick up anything by ID. From playing Doom with a joystick way back never to enjoying the shit out of Rage (minus the ending); it's been a great journey so far. I hope they can keep up that kind of quality.
  • I've made $64,000 so far this year working online and I'm a full time student. Im using an online business opportunity I heard about and I've made such great money. It's really user friendly and I'm just so happy that I found out about it. Heres what I do.................. WWW.Wow40.ℂℴm
  • Why did I get voted down? could someone provide me with a reason.
