Taking over from previous free Games with Gold title Hitman Absolution, today sees Tequila Works' Deadlight stepping into the spotlight, offering up a slab of zombie survival viewed from a 2.5D side-scrolling perspective.

You play as Randall Wayne, a survivor on a fraught journey to return to his family, while coping with the horrors of a zombie apocalypse set in the 1980s. You'll need to run, jump and climb your way to safety, while braving hordes of shambling undead and the last, barbaric vestiges of humanity.

Requiring a steady trigger finger and good aim, survival is the tip of the iceberg in Deadlight, as there are plenty of secrets and collectibles to unearth too. You can also attempt the rock hard Nightmare Mode, facing tougher enemies and challenges.

Deadlight is available to download via Games with Gold now for free, until April 30th. You can add it to your download queue here.

  • Haven't played this yet, will definitely give it a try.
  • Great game and easy completion.
  • I played this earlier while I was waiting for Trials Fusion. It was quite good; much better than I expected.
  • Sounds good.. but when are the Xbox One Games with Gold going to happen?? I'm hoping it will be in the next few months and they will probably be mostly indie games. Although I can see Deadrising, Rise, Powerstar Golf and Crimson Dragon all being free at some point.. I dunno.. just would like this to start happening lol
  • I've already purchased the game a while ago (with no regrets, mind you), but I highly recommend it. The ending is slightly "meh", but the gameplay and art style is wonderful. :)
  • Well, finally have a reason to turn on my xbox and go on xbox live… it's been about a month or two since I last connected to live… hopefully there'll be some nice new interesting indie games as well to peek at.
  • I agree #6 my 360 has been collecting dust. Am glad I will be firing it up(may need a jump start :P) although zombie games are a dime a dozen so expectation will be high. At least its not a fucking tower defense game.
  • Paid for this during the December XBL sales... and still haven't played it. Darn. Oh well, still sounds like a good one.
  • Only ever turn my xbox on these days to download these free games here we go again
  • My character died at the Helicopter Chase and the game notified me that my data had corrupted. It's an alright game but doesn't grab me as much as I thought it was going to. Still, worth a few hours of game time.
  • @4 They said it would be announced "soon" my guess the program will be announced at E3 and won't start until the end of the year or early next year. It's only been 6 months, give it time for the library to build up.
  • Get ready for 2 whole hours of gameplay.
  • Achievements look pretty simple, and I got many free achievements from Hitman so I definitely have to leave my Xbox One for this.
  • @4 You're not going to get free games on a six month old console.
  • Great picture to go with this article. Gives you a good feel for the game, for sure!
  • Can I still get hitman for free or no? Forgot to download it. Oh well
  • That's another thing I need to delete something from my hard drive to make room for. Guess I don't need CoD4 installed from disc, not like it's even playable online anymore due to hackers!
  • "You can add it to your download queue here." Except Microsoft still insist on my having a "payment option on file" to download anything from the website, so on goes the 360 to grab it...
  • This game was awesome, alas I already bought it a couple years back :( oh well no extra free game for me this month lol, but awesome for everyone else who hasn't played it yet!
  • Absolutely fantastic. Recommend to anyone who loves horrors.
  • Looking forward to this one.
  • Easy as pie. Glad its free as i feel its not worth 15 dollars. Yet another one with no replay value to me.
  • @4 seeing as this took 8 years to to happen on the 360 i cant see them doin an xbox1 deal anytime soon, the x1 has only been out 6months with only like 30 odd games available for it. The price of the x1 digital downloads they deffo wont be givin away full games like dead rising 3 till like 2020
  • very easy.. with 4 hours in i only got the 3rd and final act left.. BOOORRRINNNG! not complaining about the it being free but being boring as hell :P
  • First time in a long time (ever, maybe) that I got both games in a month. I like this trend.
  • I'm actually quite enjoying it. Wouldn't jave bought at the price it went for... but most of the games in my collection were cheaper than that anyway. The artwork and the atmosphere in this game are pretty nice. No complaints from me. First monyh with gold has been great on the free games front.
  • Deadlight was great. Highly recommend it! Have fun everyone.
  • @23 They already announced awhile back that they were adding Games with Gold to Xbox One in 2014. Get your facts straight before you condemn them. OT: Seeing as it was free I'm not gonna moan, but I will give my review if any are interested. So far today I've played the first few levels. It's a bad game. An art style that's been done to death and is more often too dark, unresponsive controls, a poorly written, boring and predicable story with even worse voice acting. If it wasn't free I would be demanding my money back.
  • Just started playing this game. I am only on the opening act, but so far I am enjoying Deadlight.
  • I love games where I can sit down and play, enjoy, and complete in one short session.
  • Fun game, but it has some problems that stopped me from playing it more after getting all the achievements.
  • Picked this up ages ago and I enjoyed it while it lasted. Yeah its not amazing but It was certainly worth the time and money I spent on it. Kinda like Flashback(90's) crossed with Mark of the Ninja.
  • has to have the best achievement names in a game ever!!!!!
  • Great fun game. Few hard bits but mostly keeps a good balance. Achievements in it are pretty easy too if you have a collectable guide (if I'm remembering this game correctly).
  • Cool game for anyone that doesn't have it, get it. You won't be disappointed. My only real complaint came with the length of the game but you still get a couple of hours out of this excellent arcade game. The handheld video games are a nice throwback.
  • Can not find nightmare mode. Please enlighten me. http://www.xboxachievements.com/forum/showthread.php?t=573975
  • I got this game when it first came out and it is really killer great game and I love how all the achievments are song titles from the 80s
  • @#28 wha?!? Hmmm I think you better stop using drugs or whatever is fuckin up ur brain to bash this game (throws him out the window)
  • Nightmare Mode and alternative ending are pc-exclusive. Seems like Mr. Walker reviewed the pc-version.
