Capcom Games Have to Sell 2 Million Copies to Get a Sequel

Capcom has a policy that prevents the company from creating a sequel to any game that fails to sell over two million copies.

That’s according to Street Fighter series producer Yoshinori Ono. Speaking to Famitsu, Ono said, “At the end of the day, there are just some brick walls that a salary-man can never overcome.”

“For instance, if a game doesn't sell over two million copies, then we'd have to put the brakes on any plans for a sequel. All that means is that we weren't capable enough.”

"And all we can do after that is to reflect on the experience, take what we can learn from it, and try to apply those lessons on some other title.”

The answer came in response to a question about the possibility of a Street Fighter X Tekken sequel, which only sold 1.7 million copies worldwide.

Ono also said that Darkstalkers will not receive a sequel either, because “we didn't manage to hit our sales targets” for Darkstalkers Resurrection.

  • So... how many games do we recon they'll ignore their own rule for? I doubt half their games that have sequels have sold that well. Plus we may now not see some sequels for some good games, shame. (not up to date on sale numbers on all of their games).
  • So THAT'S why God Hand hasn't got a sequel yet. =[
  • Dont care no longer buying a capcom game till they get off their high horse and give us s new megaman game either a reboot of the original or a reboot of the X series.
  • @3 Yeah...right...
  • So I was thinking, if they made a good game, people might be inclined to buy it. Oh, but wait. Capcom sucks now and they release ten versions of a game and have a shit ton of DLC's. Go out of business already Capcom. Your IP's would be better off in someone else's hands. The Capcom I grew up with died a long time ago.
  • So does that mean we'll be getting only Street Fighter games in the future? :p My advice would be to stick to their expertise, Fighters!
  • every body buy resident evil re remake, i want a resident evil 2 remake...
  • @7 would love a RE2 remake. The remake on GameCube didn't sell that well though and I don't expect this to either. I will be getting it though, can't beat a classic.
  • We will more than likely be getting a Resident Evil 7, since 6 sold more than five million copies. Thats cool though, because RE is one of my favorite series.
  • @7 and 8 You guys do realize that the RE 1 remake is just an graphically upgraded version of the gamecube game with a few extra stuff added. It probably didnt cost them an extremily large amount of money to make it. Where as to make a RE2 remake they would have to start from the ground up with the next-gen engine to make it. A lot of time, money, and effort would be put into making a game that is 16 years old when they could be making Resident Evil 7, Street Fighter 5, or Dead Rising 4. I'm not saying I wouldn't want it, because I would be one of the first to line up to buy it. Just saying from a business stand-point, it's a risky move. Regardless, I'm with the rest of you and really want a RE2 remake.
  • how does this explain lost planet?
  • Quick, everyone go buy 10 copies of Dragon's Dogma so we get a sequel!
  • @11. Good point. Two bloody sequels as well!
  • This is the highest caliber of bullshit I have ever heard in my life. This doesn't explain how Lost Planet, Mega Man 9 and Viewtiful Joe got sequels. Jesus, no wonder everyone is leaving the company.
  • Wait didn't that devil may cry reboot sell two million copies or am I mistaken. I really liked it so maybe it'll get a sequel.
  • Good bye Capcom unless we get more Dead Rising I'm out
  • Capcom please have a talk with THQ.Compare what they did, to what you're doing. If you guys don't want to end up like them, you'd better shape up.Your (and the industry as a whole) approach to dlc is sickening.Get back to making good games and everything will take care of itself.
  • @3 and 16. Well thats capcom out of business then...
  • I am not going to buy the resident evil remake, already completed the original ages ago, and the remake on the gamecube. Ill play something new instead
  • So we won't get a proper Darkstalkers sequel because their half assed effort in Darkstalkers Resurrection didn't sell so well? What kind of bull crap is that?! I couldn't agree more with those who wish they'd go under. Maybe if they stopped churning out shit (cough Resident evil 6 cough, gamers would be more inclined to open their wallets.
  • Does this means Resident Evil remake must hit 2 million copies in order to get a remake of Resident Evil 2?
  • #15 I'm happy I'm not the only one who actually enjoyed the DMC reboot, fingers crossed for a sequel!
  • So... How does street fighter keep getting releases? Surely the re-re-re-re-releases are going below 2 million... Who wants 6 different versions of street fighter?
  • Don't care about anything else from them as long as we get more dead rising.
  • Well there you have it, its about the money not the fans or the game.way to go capcom
  • lost planet 1 was great!
  • @23 They aren't exactly sequels, they're dlc that gets a physical copy for those who don't own the previous versions. Street fighter 5 would be an official sequel
  • @28 that sounds like a technicality... Haha
  • @12 Last figures from 2013 say 1.4 milllion sold :( Would be a crying shame if they didn't get a sequel.
  • Ok people we just have to wait until that RE1 remake sells 2 million, then we can go storm their heads to make a RE2 remake.
  • If it don't make dollars then it don't make sense
  • I tend to avoid games that have a crap-ton of DLC available at launch date, I'm sure I'm not the only one.
  • Currently from where Capcom is, the company who I grew up played in 80's to late 90's (Mega man, Street Fighter, Resident Evil and a lot more) isn't the same as it is today unfortunately.
  • On the bright side, there will be lots of mew ip from them :p
  • How many copies of Onimusha do I have to buy before they make a sequel, reboot, anything?
  • That's neat, bur when Capcom finds themselves lucky to even sell 1 million ANYTHING, I really doubt they keep up that policy.
  • So THIS is the reason I'll never get another Darkstalkers game... I always clung to some hope Capcom would release one despite the low sales of the HD ports but nope! My dreams are crushed.
  • Wooo! RE: ORC sold 2.3 mil copies, maybe we'll see a sequel to that one day xD
  • Wish they would pick Megaman Legends 3 back up. I was bummed when they canceled it.
  • As long as i get DMC 2 or Devil May Cry 5 i dont care.
