Prey 2 Officially Cancelled

Prey 2 is officially cancelled and is no longer in development at Human Head Studios, says Bethesda vice president Pete Hines.

First announced in March 2011, Prey 2 was a sci-fi FPS set on an alien planet in which you play as former U.S. Marshall turned-bounty hunter, Killian Samuels.

Since it was first revealed, the game has been subject to numerous delays and rumours have circulated suggesting that development had been handed off to Dishonored creator Arkane.

This particular rumour was debunked by Hines last year, but regardless, the game was still clearly in trouble and Hines put the blame squarely at Human Head’s feet.

“We spent years and millions of dollars and a ton of effort trying to help Human Head make a great Prey 2 game,” said Hines in June, 2013. “What we said the last time was that it’s not up to our quality standards.”

Despite this, Hines still said that the game would come out eventually. Now it seems that’s no longer the case.

Speaking to CNET, Hines confirmed that Bethesda has given up on the hope of Human Head turning the project around. Prey 2 has been officially cancelled.

"It wasn't up to our quality standard and we decided to cancel it,” said Hines. “It's no longer in development. That wasn't an easy decision, but it's one that won't surprise many folks given that we hadn't been talking about it.”

Hines did not comment on exactly when the project was cancelled, adding only that Prey is “still a cool universe worth exploring”.

In June last year, documents emerged suggesting that Arkane was indeed working on a version of Prey 2, conceived as a spiritual successor to System Shock 2. You can read more about that through here.

  • shame as it looked quite decent from what i saw.
  • Dam, really like Prey. Oh well, hopefully they invest their money into another awesome game, either a sequel or brand new title
  • The first game didn't deserve a sequel , it was garbage.
  • Um, this is stupid. The game is FINISHED. Released what you have for like, £5. Get some of your money back. We KNOW the game is fully complete, because a PC leak of it happened a year or so ago.
  • @5 thats the stupidest thing iv ever read. It has a pc leak so its finished? Let it go, let it go.
  • That's a real, real shame.
  • @5 even if it was finished it's not just a case of releasing it. They would have to support it with bug fixes, title updates, all stuff I'm sure they wouldn't want to spend time doing.
  • This is too bad. As much as the first game gave me nausea and migraines, it was really good.
  • This sucks. I really enjoyed the first one.
  • Damn. Sad news. I remember seeing the first CG teaser for it years ago and getting hyped up over it.
  • Aww, that is so disappointing. The gameplay we saw from that one E3 looked amazing. I was so excited for it. Damn...
  • I will still prey for it.
  • Prey sucked
  • I loved Prey. One of the first 360 games I played. Shame that the sequel got cancelled.
  • But it looked so goooood! :( Guess it's like the original concept for Metal Gear Rising, which looked ace (to me better than what we got), but mustn't have played well.
  • False hope much....
  • One of the things I've heard is that Bethesda was planning on not paying out to Human Head, so that they go in the red and Bethesda would've been able to purchase them on the cheap. HH got wind of this and refused to play ball. I guess they did something similar with Arkane as well? Real shitty practice if it's indeed true. I was very excited about this game and I'm genuinely having a hard time believing it's not being released because it's not 'up to standard.' It's bern way too long for that.
  • This franchise must be cursed or something. It took the first game something like 10 years to come out.
  • Move on to Dishonored 2 Bethesda...
  • They could of released it as an early access game
  • The worst part of this announcement is that they still don't rule out a future for the damn game. They cancel the game, yet state that the Prey universe is still worth exploring? So, they MAY want a second game eventually? That's not even derailing the hype train, only switching tracks.
  • I'm not heartbroken about this, but Prey was a decent enough game with some cool ideas.
  • Damn...well, maybe sometime in the not too disant future, another company will give it a go. I think Bethesda Game Studios would be a good match. Just let them give us another Fallout and Elder Scrolls first.
  • @9: So it wasn't just me?! The first prey made me nauseous constantly(as did the first homefront). I think I figured out it was the really slow frame rate.
  • FUCK BETHESDA!!!
  • @25 It made me so sick I couldnt play it for more than a few hours at a time. Duke Nukem 3D also made me hurl.
  • I liked the first game as well. It was unique.
  • It's a shame. I was quite interested in this one... Also, Pete Hines is still a prick. Haha!
  • @25 & 27 Same here.I had to force my way through the start.Eventually I got used to the inversions and flips. The game wasn't perfect, but I had fun with it.The game had some really OP multiplayer guns and a few controversial design elements (portals being one of them). I remember trying not to kill the ghost kids as well.I REALLY wish this game wasn't canned. Prey 2 would have been a day one purchase.
  • So disappointed. Not shocking but I was really hoping this would see a release sometime especially since the first game ended on a cliff hanger.
  • It had been so long...I almost forgot they were even still trying to make this... Probably for the best they quit.
  • Heartbroken. No, I'm completely serious. I was with #1 in the minority. One of the very few games I was looking forward to. :/
  • Apparently Prey lived up to their quality standards, but somehow this fell short. I'm hoping that means they raised the bar for quality, because if not, Prey 2 must have been truly awful. The first Prey wasn't bad, but I wouldn't call it good.
  • @#26 - Gackt, is that you?
  • @34 The first Prey was published by 2K. But regardless of that, 'not living up the standards set' sounds incredibly fishy when they release games like Fallout and TES in the states they did. As soon as I think of a Bethesda Software game, 'bug-riddled bullshit' pops into my head. I also have trouble believing it due to the fact that the first Prey was in development hell for well over 10 years and switched developers multiple times, yet HH managed to turn it into a pretty damn decent game with what they were handed. I'm not buying this bullshit from Bethesda.
  • I'm all for this. Move the funding back to getting Fallout4 and TES6 out the door. Not really a fan of all the other crap they develop/publish.
