Dead Island: Definitive Edition is coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on May 31st, reckons retailer Best Buy.

The listing states that collection contains (presumably visually enhanced) versions of Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide, as well as a “brand new standalone 16-bit game” called Dead Island: Retro Revenge.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen mention of Dead Island: Definitive Edition from a retailer. Back in July last year, listings temporarily popped up for the collection on South African retailer Loot. It's also been rated by the Australian and Brazillian ratings boards.

This is the first time that the contents of the edition have been revealed, however.

Dead Island: Definitive Edition is listed at $39.99 and set for a May 31st release. Deep Silver has yet to make a public announcement.

[Update]

Dead Island: Definitive Edition (SRP: $39.99/€39.99/£29.99) has been officially confirmed by Deep Silver, along with the May 31st release date and confirmation that both Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide will receive standalone releases ($19.99/€19.99/£14.99) on the same date.

Here's some bullet-points:

  • Higher Quality Textures

Game textures have been redone in a higher resolution and the level of quality has been improved across the board

  • Photorealistic new lighting system

The lighting system in the game has been vastly improved, providing a much more realistic look, enhancing the stunning tropical setting

  • Physically based shading

The introduction of new physically based shading techniques due to the latest iteration of the Chrome Engine means a higher quality look to the game models and objects as they react in a more realistic way to various lighting conditions

  • Image quality enhancements via anti-aliasing

The addition of more sophisticated anti-aliasing means that console players can now experience Dead Island without unsightly “jaggies“ – meaning a much cleaner look throughout

  • Improved-quality game models and geometry assets

All major geometry assets (for example: NPCs and character models) highlight a marked quality increase

  • HBAO and motion blur effects

The introduction of Horizon-based Ambient Occlusion  adds an extra layer of depth and realism to the world

Through a better implementation of object shadows, while the all-new motion blur effects will provide a much more cinematic feel to the game experience.

  • Updated game UI

Providing a more consistent look between both Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide. Increase to equal quality level for seamless game experience.

  • The Current-gen Console Experience

The Dead Island Redux Collection will also of course take advantage of the latest console features such as Online 4 Player Co-op, PS Vita Remote-Play (PS4), Share-Play (PS4), streaming and recording

  • Power Fists Power-up

And last but not least, The fan favourite unofficial PC mod will also now be added to both products. Punch your way through the mayhem with craziest power-up ever!

But wait there’s more! Added into the mix of flesh-eating zombie chaos is a brand new side-scrolling/endless runner action game Dead Island Retro Revenge!

  • Retro look meets melee-based combat
  • Featuring leaderboards, achievements and plenty of depth
  • Game mechanics include power-ups, super attacks and a combo system

  • "We ran out of money for Dead Island 2..."
  • Scrolling through my Facebook earlier and the official Dead Island page had a trailer for it up. Shame I wasn't fussed on what I played of Riptide because I actually quite enjoyed DI1, glitchy mess that it was.
  • I really hope not, Dead island sucks big time
  • @3 - Then don't buy it. Obviously it's not aimed at a person such as yourself.
  • I enjoyed my time with Dead Island and Riptide. This definitive edition may just be a cash grab to continue funding Dead Island 2, which seems to be in development limbo, at the moment.
  • Nice. Always wanted die play the Dead Island games but never had the time.
  • I never played the originals, I will be in the market for this version though. Love me some co-op games. Remasters will never stop, just don't buy them if you don't want them. We're still getting a BioShock collection soon and possibly an Arkham collection as well. Soooo strap in fuckos, the generation of remasters will roll on brahhhh
  • I really enjoyed the first Dead Island, flawed as it was. If you're interested in this do yourself a favour and just buy Dying Light Ultimate Edition, it takes everything that was good about Dead Island, chops off the shit and adds some great new elements.
  • There goes my hope that they would be Backwards Compatible so I could continue my Dead Island experience on my XBOX 1.
  • @8 I was unaware this was coming out yesterday, when I took your future advice and purchased dying light the following, and you are correct, I have not played many hours just yet but it looks great and plays like DI, I never played riptide though, I have it just never started it.
  • @9: Doesn't mean they still won't. Shadow Complex, Gears of War, and Castle Crashers are on BC and also have remasters. With the growing trend of offering BC games as a pre-order bonus, we could see both 360 games offered via BC for buying this collection.
  • Shadow is getting a remaster? This is great news!
  • @12: Yup! I'm excited for it, loved that one. http://www.xboxachievements.com/news/news-22788-Shadow-Complex-Remastered-Coming-to-Xbox-One-in-2016.html
  • Hopefully they will let you transfer profile info! I have several modded and upgraded weapons that I would love to have in the game to help with the achievements!
  • The asking price is pretty decent too. The only reason I may not get it at launch is because of my backlog. I like all the extra details they've worked on... cover art is a bit disturbing though >[email protected]
  • Thank god for the amount of digital only xbox1 games because at least they try something different. Waaaaay too many re-releases and they keep coming! Maybe I'm the only one but I found dead island incredibly boring and repetitive even In co-op.
  • Cool, never played Riptide.
  • This is great news.I Actually loved the Dead Island and Riptide, day one for me as i can not get enough of zombie games
  • Too bad all that doesn't make up the boring gameplay
  • Dead Island never reached its full potential but it wasn't bad. Deserving of a remaster? No, especially not Riptide because that one was actually bad.
  • @21 Soooo true, riptide was terrible on all kinds of levels and even with the improvements listed I will say you can't polish a turd !!!!
  • Never played Riptide so might pick it up.
  • Wait they already made a Dead Island definitive. It's called Dying Light. xD I'll be here all day.
  • Wow actually looking forward to this! Loved the games on the 360 : ) can't wait to play then again in better quality and relive it all again
  • Day one for me and this Zombie slaying goodness
  • Not worth the $40 for me, as I've already played them both. I'll likely wait for them to be on sale for $20 or so before picking them up. Definitely recommend the games though! If you're hesitant to get them both, pick up the original only. It's kinda like Borderlands 2 vs Presequel. Both are good, but the original is much better
  • Hope it will be in a sale eventually. Loved the games. Although the first version on release date was super broken and you could XP yourself to level 50 in less than an hour, I liked the game and hope to see a comparison trailer soon. :)
  • May be fun to play it again. But I'll be waiting until a sale before buying it
  • Dean Ambrose really needed the money if he's on the cover.
  • @9 yeah I never finished the game, guess I'll be forced to finish it on the 360 if that's the case :(
  • I was kind of worried for a second that the third game would be Escape Dead Island after reading the title. Thank god it's not.
  • In my opinion...picking these up is worth it if you never played them and enjoy zombie/open world survival action games. I'd wait for a lower price but to each their own. Then again, as others have pointed out, Dying Light is basically the new and improved edition of these games. I didn't find them boring or overly grindy but there were some technical problems. Co-op with at least one other person is strongly recommended.
  • The reason they said the games didn't have split screen last gen was due to the technical restraints of the PS3 and 360. Now what's their excuse?
  • Just give us a Bioshock remaster already. Only remaster I've ever really wanted.
  • wonder if they will add new achievements? :)
  • Hm noticed didn't say 60fps
  • I LOVED Dead Island and Riptide. They may not have been perfect games but they were extremely fun to play. I'll be getting this, but not before a price decrease, because $40 for a 3 year old and 5 year old game is absurd.
  • I played the first one, but never got to finish it, then stopped gaming for a while and missed the rest. So am definitely keen for this... just need to find the time to play them now lol
  • I might pick this up somewhere down the line. I never bothered playing Riptide, but I really enjoyed the first DI. If games being remastered are done like this, where you get multiple games in one collection, then I'm down for that.
  • Hopefully they will leave in the duplication glitch!
  • I was hoping for a new DI, but since that seems unlikely at the moment, this will have to do. I look forward to playing these again.
  • first off i do hope this is a ploy to help fund dead island 2 if so great other wise unchrchant second why isent esscape dead island in this its still a dead island game and they also had a moba title they could of brought forth with it and finaly dyeing light is a completly diffrent type of game its a parcoring zombie survival game it has some good new elements but removes the classes and limited point skill trees which game for stradigy to dead island
  • I'd gladly buy this game.....when it's on sale for $19.99
  • Yeah I love just bought it and have it pre downloaded already. Now just wait to the release date
  • Escape dead island was from a different devoloper
