Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki has reiterated that he won’t be making any more games in the series, adding that work has already begun on his next project.

Speaking in an interview with GNN Gamer, Miyazaki said, “Dark Souls 3 will be have several DLCs like previous games. But there is absolutely no plan right now for any sequels, spin-offs, or tie-ins.”

Miyazaki didn’t count out the possibility of From Software making another Dark Souls game in the future, but said that if it happens it won’t have anything to do with him.

“If a From Software developer come to me five years from now and begged, ‘please let me make another Dark Souls,’ then I will not rule out the possibility to let my subordinates start a new project,” he said.

“What is certain for now is, to me personally Dark Souls is over. So rather than make another sequel, I think it’s time we take a step to a new direction. Development of a new IP has already begun.”

Fans holding out for a Souls style game in a different setting may also be out of luck. Miyazaki said that “We want to try making new things.” He even ruled out a Demon’s Souls remaster.

As for the Dark Souls 3 DLC in the works, Miyazaki said that the second of the add-ons will release in early 2017. The first add-on will launch this autumn.

  • Really wish this said he was making one. Nothing gives me great pleasure than playing a souls game and beating it.. such a shame. But a great end to a fantastic series. Thanks making a great set of games
  • Of all the series that id like to see an end, this one is not one of them. I think a new game a couple of years down the line wouldnt hurt the franchise.
  • For the best Imo. Played and loved them all from DS 1, 2, SotFS and 3 (even started PtDE on GFWL but quit when realised achievements are broken as fuck). They are great games but are starting to become oversaturated and samey Imo. I mean I didn't even play Bloodborne and have been playing Souks games 3 years on the trot now. The mandatory 3 playthroughs and excessive grinding for covenant items font help either. To reiterate, I've really enjoyed these games but its good that they aren't pursuing the same annual model of many series and quitting while their ahead, or perhaps just taking a lengthy hiatus.
  • As long as they preserve the old school difficulty in new IPs, I'm totally fine with it. Though I have to agree, the souls games are probably my absolute favorite.
  • Loved the Souls gams but definitely time for From to rest the series and do something else.
  • Honestly id love to see a comeback of Tenchu z,its probably one of the best stealth games i played in a long time

  • So Dark Souls couldn't beat the final boss? Eh eh?
  • I would kill to have Demons Souls and Bloodborne released on XB1. God damn Sony. Cheers to a new IP though
  • Ds3 is the shiz! There's just something about it that makes it a must have game. It would be a shame if there were no more games in the series. A new Ip sounds good though.. but to supplant the DS series, it better be good.
  • I want Chromehounds 2 and a good Armored Core, From!
  • The only game I would have wasted money buying a PS4 for would have been Demons Souls 2. DS3 has a lot of demons souls feel to it which is nice but i Always hoped for a flat out sequel or a remaster with the Giant world that was removed. A shame that the best genres die and barf like AC and COD survive. Guess ill be waiting for LOTF 2 to get my next souls fix. “If a From Software developer come to me five years from now and begged, ‘please let me make another Dark Souls,’ then I will not rule out the possibility to let my subordinates start a new project,” he said. yea look how well Ds2 turned out....
  • @12 I guess if the Souls series would continue on it would eventually become shit as well. I never really liked CoD or AC but I think fans would probably say, that the first few in these series were awesome games as well until there were too many in a too quick succession and they became samey and generic.
  • @13 I was referring to this line Fans holding out for a Souls style game in a different setting may also be out of luck. Miyazaki said that “We want to try making new things.” He even ruled out a Demon’s Souls remaster. I didnt necessarily means a Dark souls game but something in the spirit. Like bloodborne or kingsfield were. I just love the forumla it sounded like he was saying they were doing something new not related to that. Even though i was not a fan of Ds2 it still was amazing compared to most other games. I just want to keep being punished hehe
  • Well that's good enough for me. Not every game series has to be milked for 20 iterations until everyone hates it. Being able to look back on these for years is gonna be great. They're instant classics in my book.
  • I hope From Software is done with these series and similar (Bloodborne) and get to work on a new Echo Night. Echo Night is not only a great graphic adventure game but it is From Software's best IP in my opinion. I was really pissed all these years seeing one King's Field clone after another.
