Evolve Is Going Free-To-Play On PC, But What Does That Mean For The Console Version?

Since Evolve's fairly disastrous launch, a huge chunk of the community has been calling for the game to go free-to-play. Well, as it turns out - developer Turtle Rock has listened, and as of July 7th, it'll be a fully free-to-play game... on PC.

The devs put out a fairly heartfelt message regarding the game's position as a paid game, it's reception, and that whole 'DLC shitstorm' that went down post-launch (their words, not ours!). That full message can be read here.

So the result? The game goes free-to-play on PC. But that's left an awful lot of the console playing community totally pissed-off... as this comment thread will testify (Control+F / Cmd+F 'Console' and see for yourself here).

So what's next for those of us that bought the game at retail price, and even those that bought a season pass?

The Evolve forum's moderator and 'resident monster doodler' writes that console players should keep an eye on Evolve's Twitch channel, though, and that they should keep an eye on official Evolve channels for an update soon.

To us, that sounds like something is certainly in the works regarding Evolve's place as a paid game on console. One line in particular is telling:

@MaddCow will be streaming and answering questions and you guys can get a feel for all of the changes that will be coming to consoles after the PC Beta.

This confirms there will be console changes... what form they will take remains to be seen.

  • ....I brought the season passes :(
  • @1 then you are a fool :)
  • They've already said on Steam that down the line it'll be F2P on consoles. That the PC version today will be a "beta" of the new format and once it's in a decent place (or more likely, to see if the work is worth putting in to be financially viable) it'll make the jump to consoles.
  • I bought the game, played it for a handful of hours, and promptly traded it in. Such an absolute bore to play.
  • @3 That's XA 'reporting' for you. Not that it's terrible, just not always entirely accurate... :
  • I paid full price with the season pass hope I get a refund
  • I'd wager they're testing out the F2P model on PC first since its easier to do stuff like this on Steam than on consoles. If its successful, I'd wager the console versions will come quickly.
  • It was okay and pretty fun to play the beta with friends. Unfortunately none of my friends bought the full game once it came out.
  • Sounds like some of you learned a valuable lesson. Don't buy a game like this with all the dlc when you can predict before launch how fast the population will die off. Even for those who predicted it, was astonishing seeing how fast the population died
  • I bought Evolve for $15 used from Gamestop. Got home, took 45 minutes to find one player, ejected the disc, and returned the game that same day.
  • I was interested before release, then saw it nose dive pretty fast. If it goes free to play, I may consider it should some of my friends go for it too.
  • @5: To be fair, every official announcement only mentions PC. I don't know where on Steam they mentioned this model would also be coming to consoles, but it's not something they're putting out in pressers or social media. #3's post is the first I'm hearing of it confirmed for consoles.
  • The game offers bots. So there's some value even when the servers are underpopulated. Co-op versus bots is an option. Turtle Rock already said PC players at least will be getting a lot of "free" content if they already paid for the game. I'd be surprised if they didn't offer the same deal to console players. I don't regret buying it. It's a fun and unique game.
  • https://twitter.com/EvolveGame/status/751085754705547264 "Right now we are leading with Stage 2 Beta on Steam and intend to work toward a console release after we prove it out."
  • @12 To be honest I hadn't seen many other press releases so that's more than likely the case. It was more of a general comment on something I had noticed recently. News articles here every so often seem to have details missed, details that I'd previously seen in WPCentral articles. Just worried me that Windows Phone Central of all places was slowly becoming more accurate than here :S
  • I'm watching the Twitch stream. Consoles must wait because the certification process of Microsoft and Sony make it harder to iterate. So the beta will happen on Steam, available today. It sounds like a lot about the game has been changed. Offline play vs bots is still a viable option, they say, but obviously MP is still the focus. Anyone who owns the base game (no DLC required) will be a Founder and receive continued content because of that. But for each DLC character/monster you bought, you will get related content (skins, etc). All content can be earned for free now. But I'm not sure if they mean all characters/monsters or just all skins and perks. It will probably be clearer when the site isn't getting hammered.
  • I don't buy multiplayer only games but I'd play it if it went free.
  • @4 - I feel really bad for you. Evolve is one of the best games of this generation.
  • Going F2P killed this game, like everyone with a brain knew it would.
