Gearbox Software May Have Just Shown Off Our First Look At Borderlands 3

Our first possible look at Borderlands 3 could have been shown off at GDC 2017 last night, thanks to Randy Pitchford, Gearbox Software and Unreal.

During Epic’s Unreal presentation at GDC (taking place in San Francisco), Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford took the stage to show rendering tech the studio 'may' use in a future game.

Pitchford went into a bit of detail about the tech, explaining that it helps create real-time shadows and responds dynamically to the information you feed it - so if you want to make various planets with different properties regarding light and gravity, the engine will do all the legwork for you.

Pitchford states:

“It allows the scene to simulate in real-time. As time of day changes, or, as, maybe conceivably we have different physics if we, for example, were to explore different planets. There might be different physics and the sun and the moons might be in different positions than what we’re used to on Pandora.”

That, right there, is an explicit Borderlands reference, right? That leads us to believe this tech and these images could be prototypes or concepts for the next game in the series. Better yet, Pitchford signs off by saying Gearbox is definitely working on a new Borderlands game, and that they'll get it to us soon. Exciting.

If you want to see Pitchford's talk yourself, you can check it out from 1:04:00 to 1:15:50 below:

  • Looks about the same as the others.
  • so, Borderlands 3 is all about light and shadow? that's important when the game is filled with pink neon sniper rifles... regardless, just make your system better than Fallout's, where I can stare at the ground and watch the shadows clumsily lurch along like an old clock. annoying.
  • #1 Got downvoted for stating a fact? You put these screens next to BL2, they would be indistinguishable from one another.
  • I can't wait for this to be properly announced. I'm hoping they're gonna release it this year but there's been literally nothing said about this by Gearbox until now, and even this is just a tech demo. Regardless, I'm sure it'll be awesome when it comes out. Borderlands 1 was awesome, Borderlands 2 was my personal favourite but the Pre-sequel wasn't too good so I hope they've learned from that.
  • @3 Not sure why you got down voted either, BL1, BL2 and the Prequel all look the same. Its just a fact.
  • weird how this comes out the same day as Borderlands 2 on BC. I think the hype train is being fulled and ready to go.
  • I was just talking about blands3 with my nephew yesterday. I really hope it come out within the next year, I can't wait to do quests for the psycho character from blands2!
  • [Shown Off Out] what does that mean? Good news about BL3, one of my favorite game series. Heyoo!
  • I agree with number 1 but I'm ok. The art style is something I really liked so it's good to go for me. Can't wait for the proper unveiling.
  • If only we could have cross-online with PS4, the co-op oportunities for this game would be huge. Why do people choose to fight instead of cooperating? Companies fight among themselves and so do the users. If we work toghether, we could create a better future for all of us.
  • @5 if you think BL 1 and 2 look remotely the same you're either lying or blind...
  • Wonder what game Gearbox will embezzle funds from to fund this one...?
  • Definitely not much of an upgrade, if any, from BL2 or TPS. Doesn't matter though, this series is all about the gameplay and characters.
  • @11 If you think BL1 and 2 look remotely different you're either lying or blind...
  • Does anyone really believe anything Pitchman says anymore?
  • @14 If you walk into a lamp post and say it doesn't hurt you're both lying and blind...
  • Did no one watch the video? He states its not a game just a tech demo, and I very much doubt that's how they wanna "leak" BL3. I think there just creating some hype since there last game didn't do well
  • @17 borderlands 3 doesn't need any hype. The name is hype enough. Just make BL3 huge open world , hopefully 8 man coop, plenty of characters and a good story and infinite replayability and everyone is happy. Let's not forget LONG LONG LONG
  • Am I the only person who never really got into borderlands? Even playing with friends.just a load of fetch n carry quests while shooting wave after wave after wave of identical enemies' just found em boring n repetitive
  • @14 I think I can see both sides of this. Yes, they both look identical in the comic book art style, and the graphics haven't really improved as there isn't much to improve on, but theme-wise they are different. BL 1 has a much more brown/red palette, much like the above pics. Everything's rusted, faded, and dead, and there's nothing but sand. Similar feel to Mad Max I suppose? While BL 2 and Pre-Sequel are much more flashy and colorful, the environments are much more alive, they did a lot more work with lighting. Most of the models also seem to be a bit more chunky and more cartoon-ish.
  • @14 Environmental textures, animations, frame rate. clipping issues. Borderlands was a mess compared to Borderlands 2. You're clearly an idiot trying to complain about something that isn't there.
  • @19 Says the guy with Handsome Jack for a gamerpic haha
  • @21 In what way is me saying BL1 and 2 look the same a complaint? Did I say them looking the sasamene was a bad thing? No, I simply said they look tgthee same. Maybe brush up on what an actual complaint is before you call someone an idiot, idiot.
  • HISSING MEAT IS A CUNT I.D.S.T
  • @25 1v1 me in Borderlands bby ;)
