Ubisoft Confirms The Division's Year 2 Content Will Be Entirely Free

Ubisoft Massive has announced that everything that'll be coming to The Division as part of the game's second year will be entirely free. This came from a livestream the developer hosted on the one-year anniversary of the game's launch.

The free content will take the form of two large expansions, the developer revealed, and there won't be any publisher-specific deal on when the expansions launch either (between delayed launches and gameplay bugs that prevented Ubisoft from sticking on schedule, many gamers felt short-changed by the original content plan).

“All of the content updates that we’re going to provide are going to be free content updates,” explained Julian Gerighty, creative director for The Division, during the Twitch livestream announcement. “There is no season pass for year two.”

The Division will have two (currently unnamed) expansions throughout the year; the first is scheduled for summer and the other will drop later. The summer release is characterised by three main developments: firstly, it'll introduce timed events called Seasons into the game that use modifiers to alter gameplay in certain areas (think Skulls in Destiny).

Secondly, the game will add the ability for you to create and swap loadouts - meaning if you've got a ridiculous set-up, you can share that with your pals (so long as they have the correct gear). Finally, the game will add Feats: these are similar to achievements, but they work in-game. The more Feats you complete, the more 'patches' you'll earn and be able to equip to yourself, showing off all that crazy stuff you've done. Like cosmetic bragging rights.

The second expansion will focus more on the game's story elements, however, with the DLC having more of a 'narrative weight' to it.

To support the cost of giving away free content for Year 2, Ubisoft has added microtransactions to the game. To soften the blow of this a little, Ubisoft is giving all players 200 Premium credits in the coming weeks (that's worth about $2). These can be used to buy clothes, weapon skins and emotes.

You can look forward to more information on The Division's Year 2 plans in the coming months, and the first Y2 expansion will drop in the summer.

  • You mean skulls in halo right ?
  • @1 Destiny has them too and I thought since The Division and Destiny's place as on-going service-based games were so similar, it'd be the better comparison to draw!
  • this makes me really consider rebuying this. plus its cheaper now.
  • It be more dark zone crape, mehhhh I want the division ubisoft showed off years ago when you could take car doors off and use them as shields
  • @4 I mean, that would be cool, but there's already a shield skill in the game. Defeats the purpose if there's a second.
  • another game fucked up with micro transaction
  • @4 I know this is a game but car doors don't make very good shields in real life, plus they aren't all that easy to just take off. You know, if they were going for that whole realism thing.
  • @6 What lol?
  • They need to completely redo the troll zone, aka dark zone, and allow players to enter PvE only dark zones.
  • @9 Obviously intelligence isn't #6's strong suit.
  • @6 = the micro-transactions in The Division are purely for cosmetic items (backpack and weapon skins as well as clothing for your agent) and entertainment purposes (emotes for your character) only. There is no way you can get better weapons/gear/mods through micro-transactions and the clothing options do not add any stats. In this case, micro-transactions are not destroying the game, they are simply there as an optional feature if someone wishes to purchase them. Maybe do a little research next time before just commenting away?
