Ubisoft Massive has announced that everything that'll be coming to The Division as part of the game's second year will be entirely free. This came from a livestream the developer hosted on the one-year anniversary of the game's launch.
The free content will take the form of two large expansions, the developer revealed, and there won't be any publisher-specific deal on when the expansions launch either (between delayed launches and gameplay bugs that prevented Ubisoft from sticking on schedule, many gamers felt short-changed by the original content plan).
“All of the content updates that we’re going to provide are going to be free content updates,” explained Julian Gerighty, creative director for The Division, during the Twitch livestream announcement. “There is no season pass for year two.”
The Division will have two (currently unnamed) expansions throughout the year; the first is scheduled for summer and the other will drop later. The summer release is characterised by three main developments: firstly, it'll introduce timed events called Seasons into the game that use modifiers to alter gameplay in certain areas (think Skulls in Destiny).
Secondly, the game will add the ability for you to create and swap loadouts - meaning if you've got a ridiculous set-up, you can share that with your pals (so long as they have the correct gear). Finally, the game will add Feats: these are similar to achievements, but they work in-game. The more Feats you complete, the more 'patches' you'll earn and be able to equip to yourself, showing off all that crazy stuff you've done. Like cosmetic bragging rights.
The second expansion will focus more on the game's story elements, however, with the DLC having more of a 'narrative weight' to it.
To support the cost of giving away free content for Year 2, Ubisoft has added microtransactions to the game. To soften the blow of this a little, Ubisoft is giving all players 200 Premium credits in the coming weeks (that's worth about $2). These can be used to buy clothes, weapon skins and emotes.
You can look forward to more information on The Division's Year 2 plans in the coming months, and the first Y2 expansion will drop in the summer.
