3D Realms Closes Its Doors

According to recent reports around the web today, long standing developer 3D Realms, has recently closed its doors for good with money problems being cited as the reason.

The Texas based studio had been hard at work on Duke Nukem Forever since 1997 whose future now hangs in the balance. Early rumours on the studio closure stated that it was down to Take Two pulling their funding for the title, however Shacknews earlier reported that Take Two VP of communcations Alan Lewis stated that the "relationship with 3D Realms for Duke Nukem Forever was a publishing arrangement, which did not include ongoing funds for development of the title." Furthermore Lewis stated that "Take-Two continues to retain the publishing rights to Duke Nukem Forever."

Confirming initial reports this morning was 3D Realms Webmaster, Joe Siegler, who posted on the official forums stating that "It's not a marketing thing. It's true. I have nothing further to say at this time."

With 3D Realms owning the intellectual property rights for Duke Nukem Forever and Take Two owning the publishing rights, it's hard to see the title ever being picked up.  The end of 3D Realms could also see the end of the Prey series that was greatly received back in 2006 unless someone feels adventurous enough to pick that up too.

A sad day for the games industry in which one of the old skool major players wanes into non-existance.

  • too bad
  • Today, is a sad day.
  • #4: "this game sounds cool" You must not have even read the article... And I do hope Prey gets picked up. That game was surprisingly fun.
  • @4 WHAT FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU? jesus dont even know what your on about to obsessed with what umber you are. This sucks though I know a lot of die hard duke fans will be sad.
  • duke nukem NEVER xD
  • Dam i wanted to "Kick Some Ass" all duke nukems owned and i thought prey was really good ill miss those games
  • I thought Prey 2 was in development. I hope it gets picked up. Prey is one of this gens most under rated games imo. #3 and #4 You are and idiot sir. ***facepalm***
  • no next max payne too
  • Tis a sad day indeed. Couldn't care less about all these other companies going under but 3D was one of the best in my book.
  • I'm actually much more concerned about the Prey series than Duke Nukem. Prey was awesome.
  • /me waits for lots of "Duke Nukem Never" gags....
  • @ #9 - Max Payne isn't being done by 3D Realms, it's being done by Rockstar Vancouver. The original was done by Remedy as well =P
  • D:
  • "Time to kick ass and chew bubblegum.... and im all out of bubblegum" has to be one of the best lines in all of gameing !!!!! idk why gameing companys are having money problems when its going strong compared to most jobs out there...... still a sad day. @3/4 Spaz!!!!! and a fuck up.
  • Aww man such a shame, first Free Radical now 3D realms. Is a shame. Duke Nukem was one of the best!
  • i'm not a die hard duke fan, but i was 7 when they began this project, i'm now 19 and it might not get picked up by someone else and we'll never see this game come out. (sad face). guess i'll have to but duke on XBLA now. and Prey was a suprisingly good game(agree w/ Hubsch). i hope someone grabs that title out of the trash can also. Sad news, but i can easily (underlined twice) move on.
  • i read this up a couple of hours ago.......was well dissapointed =(
  • Aw, even though I used to think the Duke Nukem games were whatever, I probably would have gotten this, or at least rented it. Sucks.
  • Was 3d realms making the game "They"......if so that sucks :-(
  • While the loss of the titles hurts gamers, let's not forget that this is about several unforunate people losing their jobs. I hope the best for them & their families. Thanks for the great titles & may y'all become members of another popular title by way of being hired onto a succesful development team.
  • I just heard about this from a friend...very saddening...hopefully they won't shut down the servers for Duke Nukem 3D...and I was really looking forward to Duke Nukem Forever :(
  • This is a sad sad day indeed, another Duke fps would have been the shiznit. Just imagine a duke/prey crossover :[
  • That sucks hard man T_T
  • Duke Nukem Forever wasn't going to and will never come out..
  • I honestly don't care. The game was never going to come out and was frankly, an embarasement.
  • can we have 2 minutes silence for these people and there jobs(let alone there work and accomplishments)
  • Wow, Duke Nukem was the first game I've ever played, I still can't believe this.
  • While this is a sad day for the history of 3D realms (i grew up with there games, Duke of course, but i loved other titles like terminal velocity and shadow warriors), lets not forgot that there is a clear reason for this happening, while i won't judge to much as i don't know the ins and outs of 3D realms, but in one form or another they have been working on Duke Nukem Forever for 12 years now, 12 YEARS! that is beyond ridiculous, from a business point of view, you just can't work on something for that long without getting any profit in from it, how can you expect anyone to want to fund you when you've messed about with the same title for 12 years and still no sign of it being released any time soon, EA flourish because they can make at least reasonably good games, but get them out quickly
  • @14 Though it was developed by Remedia, it was produced by 3D Realms
  • #26 How was the game an embarrassment? It gave people something to look forward to...Oh yeah, thats a bad thing right? Yeah, go die please. Anyways, sad to hear, hopefully both titles will be picked up by good companies, heres hoping.
  • I meant #27, typo.
  • 3D Realms is here to kick ass and release Duke Nukem Forever, but they're all out of dough. :[
  • They failed for 12 years and now they got what they deserved. Also prey was a sack of shit, goddamn awful game.
  • Man, this is fucking sad.
  • I would like to see more of the Prey story because of the way they ended the first one Let Duke Nukem Forever just die though, I really don't care about it anymore
  • My childhood is dying away.
  • Noooooo this is bad hopefully somebody will pick up duke
  • this is so sad, i grew up with their games....
  • i agree with #33 prey sucks!!! and furthermore: who actually thought that duke nukem forever was ever going to be realized??? they "programmed" it for years! i mean 1997!!! looool
  • =( recently been playing land of the babes haha, awesome game. gutted...
  • If you don't make good games this is what happens. Just look at Midway!
  • Duke Nukem can suck a pole. Prey 2 is worth keeping.
  • At #31 You first.
  • I love how comment deletion makes it look like the now-#4 is yelling at himself. It took something like 8 years to get Prey out the door, so it's reasonable to assume that while 3D realms have fine products, they have no business sense.
  • Duke Nukem shall forever live on in the hearts of it's true fans. Today truly shows how economic recession sucks ass. Does this mean the servers for Duke Nukem 3D will close?
  • Something tells me that, although 3D Realms has shut its doors, Duke Nukem Forever will live on. Bad news is it will end up being developed by someone like Activision's 'B Crew', you know the crew I'm talking about. The A Crew comes up with their best titles, the ones that make Activision look good. The B Crew makes the games based on movies that are nearly unplayable at times...
  • Prey was an awesome game, and Prey 2 was said to be in development, I remember the handful of concept arts that came out last year with Tommy in some cool looking ruins and what not, if 3D Realms is done, hopefully someone will pick up Prey I could easily see someone picking up DN: Forever too, buuut whoever does will probably rush finishing it for us all to finally play and it end up being a disappointment Still, RIP 3D Realms!
  • Damn I really wanted to play Duke Nukem on Xbox360 in all its glory!!
  • it aint no bike, but it sure beats the hell outta walking
  • PREY was the fucking shit son! AND @3/4 you two are fucking idiots, nuff said. RIP Duke Nukem
  • Am guessing the "original" 3 + 4 posts have been deleted...anyway...on topic sad sad day, saw this reported on the BBC website earlier.
  • It's time to kick ass and chew bubblegum... and I'm all out of funds...
  • #23 is right, as I began to read the article I immediately knew exactly why it happened. Because they spent so much time developing Duke Nukem Forever, that they just weren't getting money to stay alive. I guess Duke Nukem Forever will actually become Vaporware. Honestly, I lost interest in the game long ago. 12 years in development, quite honestly, no game is worth that much time, despite what everyone may argue.
  • I don't think it's the end of Duke Nukem, it's too much of a cash cow, Duke sells. Likely someone will pick it up...EA or Activision, and churn out sub-par Duke titles like crazy. Perhaps Take Two, as they have some of the rights already, but...there is a dread as to who will get it. As for Prey, it may be picked up but it's not a cash cow like Duke is, so it's future is much more bleak. A sad, sad day for gamers.
  • R.I.P menzzzzz
  • What?! I remember telling my brother a few days ago that Prey 2 is coming out late this year as thats what it said on stupid wikipedia. Damn, Prey 2 better get picked up
  • #54 Not to be pessimist, but I highly doubt it. Duke Nukem 4 is basically an industry joke. A developer would have to be insane to pick that up since they have 12 years of hype and a serious uphill battle to undertake (fanboy opinions and what have you). Regardless of how much of the game is done, a stigma will be attached to it's already annoying development that the new devs butchered the game, true or not. 3D Realms basically set this up for failure long ago. Ultimately, it just comes down to whether it is a small failure with another developer picking it up, or Duke Nukem fans hunting down the former devs with pitchforks and torches...
  • wtf, i want Prey 2! lol
  • Damn! Like others, Duke was probably one of the first games I ever played. Hope it gets picked up by someone. Prey 2, well not all that bothered.
  • Awww...
  • Dark day indeed, Prey was fun but short and simply the average FPS fair. I grew up with the Duke from 1 and 2 to 3D and beyond. I was among the first players to get their 500 Kill achievement for the Duke on XBLA, Played for upwards of 24 hours straight when it came out. And Ill do it again for the next platform its released on. THE DUKE SHALL NOT DIE HERE!! HAIL TO THE KING BABY!!
  • what sad times we live in today! the us just brings really bad games too the table today which is very sad,3d realms had brought us some very great games in the past and they will be missed!! thank you for all the great games you have brought us 3d realms and you will not be forgotten.
  • hopefully a good co. will grab Nukem and Prey, there's no way the gaming community lets Nukem die - Prey is debatable but more questionable castoff titles have been scooped up lately. speaking of those games, has anyone claimed Crackdown 2 yet or is it still in limbo?
  • I kind of get the "suit yourself" feeling here, I mean, 12 years of development on a game? Blizzard is pushing it with their games, but not even they take 12 years. But they - I hope - did some stuff inbetween at least.
  • I knew Duke Nukem Forever would never come out
  • I couldn't believe the article title until i read it. Sad to see a developer you grow up with go under :(
  • Damn, grew up playing Duke Nukem, shame to see it go.
  • Ah, shit. This sucks. I loved 3D Realms, and was hoping that Duke Forever would be released EVENTUALLY. Now there's no hope even for Prey 2. Shit.
  • This article fails. Saying you can keep Duke down is like trying to pacify Chuck Norris.
  • R.I.P. King of the Vaporwares
  • #69, you could have delivered a better argument if you didn't decide to use an overused and annoying meme...
  • Duke Nukem: Forever - Coming Two-Thousand Never, should have came out with better options, but as one door closes another one opens
  • There you have it, a perfect example of a company living too much on one title alone (please, before commenting analyse what 3D Realms are known for). Instead of releasing a couple of games to make way for Duke Nukem no... They just flogged a dead horse, and only released Prey, a great game with poor support. It deserved more than that. No, I don't feel pity. To me, they won't be missed.
  • Brother goes down... A moment of silence....
  • I loved the classic duke nukems.
  • NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! fuck, now duke nukeum forever will never see the light of day.
  • Unfortunate. I wan't going to get DNF but I hope someone picks that up, after the "hard" work they put into it for 12 years.
  • The classic Duke Nukems were some of the first games i played, i remember being scared of playing it too but it was awesome.
  • a very sad day indeed i wish they will let other companies take there games
  • Damn
  • In my book there was 2 titles i was resigned to forget, Duke Nukem 3D and Shenmue 3. Seem likes the 2 of them are not bury forever... Sad indeed. As for Prey the game was correct, had fun doing it but it was nothing spectacular and multiplayer was laggy crap(too bad cause it was promising) so i can't say im that sad for Prey.
  • like a death in the family :(
  • Today is a happy day. Duke Nukem never played em never will and the prey series. I played the demo on the 360 it was crud it cussed left and right, creepy, gory, and the blood please no more it;s crud.I would only play the games for the achievements get all of them then throw the games away. Yes as in the trash because these games are trash so i would not and i repeat would not sell these games to anyone so in the trash they go.
  • fucking stupid how they led us on, r.i.p duke nukem. he was all outta bubble gum I guess ... #84, go back to playing Viva Pinata
  • Man, I have looked forward to the day that Duke Forever would finally come out...now it looks like I'll never see it...
  • I'm gonna miss 3D Realms but I guess a lot of companies from the good age are losing there touch. R.I.P Duke Nukem.. Also, #84.. are you fucking 7? You have not a clue what your talking about. Your probably one of those new gamer fags whos first game was some Barbie game and you thought all games should be clean like that. You also note you only get games to get the achievments then THROW THE GAME AWAY? You have no respect for the gaming industry.. your just another fag without a life and getting achievements is the only thing you can do because you can't pay monthly for World of Warcraft on your Moms Credit Card.
  • Fuck them! It has been 12 years and 3D Realms couldn't finish Duke Nukem Forever? If their employees actually worked on creating the game they wouldn't even be in this situation.
  • Hopefully another developer can maybe work on Duke Nukem and actually get it done.
  • It's too bad. I guess Valve will have to hold the title for having the longest game in development then (Team Fortress 2)...too bad :/
  • @#12 Too bad that line is stolen from the film They Live staring Rodey Piper. Just like all of Duke's good lines, it's from a movie. While I'm sad this probably means no Prey 2 I can't say I'm all that sad to see them go. They were supposedly working on Max Payne 3, which I feel should not be done since 2 ended the story quite nicely (kind of like Terminator 2, really). I loved Max Payne 1 & 2 but what's done is done, don't pull an Activison with this series. And let's be honest, Duke Nukem Forever was never ever going to come out and 3D Realms deserves this fate for wasting millions of Take Two's dollars on the most infamous vaporware title ever while having the balls to claim that it was really coming out this year, every year. I get it that people really liked Duke Nukem 3d but th
  • cont. I get it that people really liked Duke Nukem 3d but that was 13 years ago now. There's no reason to believe that DNF would be even remotely good, especially considering the god-awful "trailer" from like 2 years ago now.
  • end of an era
  • #91,92 i agree with ya 100% on that buddy.
  • My hopes for a Shadow Warrior remake are sullied!
