Chet Faliszek, the writer behind Left 4 Dead, Portal and Half-Life 2, has departed Valve after 12 years. His most recent role was as the company's VR ambassador, and as such was the public face of Valve for many developers. Faliszek had been a strong advocate for virtual reality, and the opportunities it creates for storytelling.

He's perhaps best-known for penning Half-Life 2's episodes and both Portal games, as well as Left 4 Dead and its sequel. It's a shame then that he won't be around for Half-Life 3, if that ever happens. Faliszek didn't tell GamesIndustry.biz - to whom he broke the news of his departure - what he'll be doing next.

"[It was] Nothing exciting or drama filled," he told the site of his decision to leave Valve. "I worked there 12 years, shipped a bunch of great games and some amazing hardware and wanted to change things up. There's no news on what's next etc, I will let you know when that happens."

We wish Faliszek all the best in his future endeavours.

  • Can't say I blame him; Valve seems like they have no desire to make games anymore.
  • Yeah. Hard to be a writer for a "games" company not anxious to be more than a retail entity.
  • A talent which can most definitely be utilized elsewhere.
  • ....Halflife 3 con.. ok, I wont go there :p I think if Valve didn't have Steam and other buisness interests, we'd be seeing "consistent" console releases from them. I get a feeling they don't even care about consoles that much tbh.
  • Well when he started Half-Life 3 was a thing. Now it's not.
  • Anyone holding their breath for a new Valve game on consoles should give up. Luckily they're all backward compatible now.
  • I still hope left 4 Dead 3 will be made
  • @#7 - I think the closest you're going to get to L4D3 is Warhammer: Endtimes - Vermintide. I'm not even kidding...
  • Wonder if he's taking Half Life 3 with him -- perhaps another company could pick up the development -- assuming of course that some work and progress has actually occurred with HL3!
  • crazy, wonder if they threw him a going away party with a cake of the games he helped create
  • The cake is a lie lol
  • There is an article online about why Half-Life 3 will never happen. Very insightful and makes sense. Bummer.
