Halo 3 Doesn't Look Like it's Ten Years Old on Xbox One X - Video

Would you believe it's been 10 whole years (a decade!) since Halo 3 first launched for Xbox 360? All those years on and the Xbox One X breathes new life into Master Chief's penultimate outing on Microsoft's previous console, working its magic once again.

Trees and plants look smoother, NPC faces are more detailed and the jagged edges are all smoothed off, making Halo 3 look the best it has ever looked on an Xbox. Halo 3 looked nice in the Master Chief Collection, sure, but arguably not as good as this.

Give our comparison video a look below to see how the Xbox One X enhanced version of Halo 3 measures up to the upscaled version of the backward compatible game on Xbox One S. You'll be able to experience the magic of Xbox One X on 7th November.

  • The upgrade is nice. How does this compare the the Master Chief Collection version? Seems a great amount of care was taken to make the baseline 2007 version beautiful, but I got MCC with the understanding that I was getting the prettiest builds of each game. Halo 3 is still the pinnacle of the series and the most realized of Bungies vision for Halo before it was tainted with COD influence and the like. Last time Halo was truly it's own thing.
  • That's partly my question as well.
  • Halo 3 is for me the perfect Halo this game was/is amazing. I remember quite well the 4 player co-op Legendary Run who we did 9 Hours non-stop just a short break to grab something to eat. At the last level we were so tired and did silly mistakes but it was so much fun and probably the best online experience I ever had in my xbox 360 time.
  • So is this the Back Comp version, or MCC?
  • That's cool and all, but that's kind of MS problem right now isn't it? Existing games and past games look amazing.... but all our future games are ports, remasters, or multi-plats that you have played, or can play on superior hardware. I am truly an Xbot, been with it since 2001, but selling hardware on the premise that it makes 10 year old games look 5 years old.... lol, that's actually kind of sad, not good.
  • I don't understand the deep desire to want new, original, exclusives. In my perfect world we would be playing all the games on a We should do well not to forget that games are only new and/or exclusive for a very short time. The steps Microsoft are taking to secure a legacy of games via backwards compatibility is commendable. In forty years, its one of the very few steps taken by the manufacturer to ensure we arnt chasing our nostalgia down in pawn shops for decades old hardware. What they have done has ultimately made Xbox One the platform with the most exclusives, in comparison to PS4 or Switch. Great exclusives like The Orange Box, Black Ops 2 and KOTOR can only be played on one console this generation.
  • This is awesome. Can't wait for my Xbox One X Scorpio ed to show up. Love to see what Microsoft is doing for past games. I don't always get to play all the great games when they are new. If you are a true gamer and lover of games I think you try to own a Vita, 3DS, PS4, Xbox One, Switch and a gaming PC. That way you can play any game you want.
  • @7 if nostalgia gaming is your thing, that's fine... I don't really find the need to revisit games I've played 5-15 years ago and sunk 50+ hours into. Anything I didn't play when it was new, even smaller chance I'm going to play it 10 years later. I don't want to eat the member berries. And it's not about WANTING exclusives, it's about giving me a reason to own the hardware. I'm buying an x1x, cause I have a 4k TV, and I absolutely hate PC gaming. But I'm not stoked abut it, it's more like, might as well.
  • Would be interesting to see a Halo 2 comparison now.
  • This is excellent. I wanted Halo 3 Anniversary badly, and can play this and get an upgrade still.
  • @7 If you think the gamer world will accept games that are 15 years old with updated graphics in place of newer games...you're delusional. MS needs to make or secure new exclusives. That's just that. @9 THANK YOU!!!! I'm so glad that we have some Xbox fans who aren't "fooled" by just nostalgia. Is it a great bonus...yes. the backwards compatibility is one of Xbox One's greatest features. However, we as gamers want GAMES! New ones to experience. Nothing wrong with MS making hardware to make these games older games look great. It just shouldn't be the main focal point of the console.
  • I'm not saying it's alright to accept BC titles over New games, but if you think its nostalgia that calling for backwards compatibility you are the delusional one. It's the principal that spending $1000+ on games one generation isn't lost in the move to the next. In life we collect things if we realize it or not, and Xbox One is the only console that insures its future by not locking you out of the past or assuming you want 3 generations of consoles hooked up constantly. It's not nostalgia that is making people want to play Black Ops 2, Far Cry 3, and Halo 4 again. Those games are but 5 years old. If your nostalgic for a time that close, good luck in life because your 30s might knock you on your ass.
  • @13 I'm actually in my mid 30s, so, not sure what that comment means. And you are absolutely right, people that play those games now aren't necessarily playing for nostalgia, it's because the current new game offerings aren't made with enough give a shit to be better than those games. I'm not saying that setting up a multi-generation capable console is a bad thing, but that being the MAIN selling point kind of is. And saying "we" collect things, sure, but you are talking about a piece of the puzzle, and implying that everyone else thinks the same way. Well, like I said, I rarely go backwards to play games, I've played a handful of remasters, but that was like 75% achievements 25% wanted to. Not everyone thinks the way you do, thought I covered that already. They NEED to do both, secure new exclusive IPs AND fill out the BC library. That is how thew can start tipping the scales, and winning over ALL types of gamers.
  • I'm seeing 0 difference myself my eyes must be running xD
  • @15 - I pretty much agree. The only REALLY noticeable improvement is with the bubble. Impressive. But not enough to make me want to play this game again. I can see revisiting Oblivion or Fallout because they look quite gorgeous but an fps game with prettier graphics? Not so much.
  • THAT is such an impressive video comparison! Truly amazing... it sort of reminds me of the difference between playing Halo: CE Anniversary, and flip-flopping between the old and new res (although not quite as pronounced). Speaking of anniversary... I *knew* that somebody was going to say something (AGAIN!) about a Halo 3 anniversary edition... which will NEVER HAPPEN! It won't happen, and we don't need it! Halo 3 "was" an original release on Xbox 360, as was Halo 3:ODST, Halo: Reach and Halo 4. Halo CE and Halo 2 were originally on the original Xbox, which is WHY we got the anniversary edition of Halo CE for the 360, and Microsoft wanted to push sales of Xbox One and the Halo:MCC... so we didn't get Halo 2 anniversary for Xbox 360 (the bastards... at least I got to play Halo 2 again and with better resolution on PC, as well as achievements... BEFORE the MCC came around)! You people who can't see the difference... are you watching this on your damn phone?! Maybe you need a better PC... better monitor??! There is DEFINITELY A DIFFERENCE! We, who can see, can only assume you have poor hardware for viewing the video, poor vision... or are too stupid to notice the difference (I'm sorry if that sounds mean, but how do YOU explain why you can't see a difference... it's one - OR MORE - of those reasons)!!! @16 (specifically) What motivates you to play a game is, of course, totally up to you... but I would NEVER compare a "Halo" game to ANY other FPS game is similar in appearance! Although ANY game I would like to play again would certainly be more desireable if the graphics were much improved... but the Halo games typically have such beautiful, alien landscapes or architecture (or ships/vehicles)... that seeing those with better graphics is definitely not passe (sorry... I don't know how to call-up the special character set for the "e" in that word).
