Deep Silver, BioWare and Evolution Veterans Form 'Wushu Studios' For New Sci-Fi Project

Based in Liverpool, UK, the newly founded Wushu Studios has announced that it's working on a sci-fi game utilising Unreal Engine 4. Formed of industry veterans from AAA studios like Deep Silver, Broken Sword dev Revolution Software and racing game specialists Evolution, Wushu Studios started operating in August 2017, before prototyping its first project in September.

Heading up the Wushu team is founder and former Evolution and PlayStation dev Alan McDermott, design director Nigel Kershaw formerly of Evolution Studios, PlayStation, Deep Silver and Revolution Software, and art director Stuart Trevor whose previous work was also at Evolution Studios and PlayStation. The team currently consists of 11 employees with a remit to create games with "interesting mechanics, unique concepts" and "to deliver fun, refreshing gameplay experiences to players," that also move away from the "grind" of AAA.

Ex-BioWare concept artist Alex Figini is also on board in helping to develop Wushu's "tantalising and unexpected" sci-fi project, which sounds like it could be coming to consoles, with mention of the game being developed as a "gamepad" experience.

"We firmly believed in the idea that our initial concepts needed to be gamepad experiences as quickly as possible, so we turned to Unreal Engine for its amazing rapid prototyping capabilities," said Studio Lead McDermott. "This approach has helped us figure out which of our concepts would allow us to flex our creative muscle most. It’s definitely not what people will be expecting to see from us; it’s absolutely not a racing game!"

We'll have more on what Wushu Studios is cooking up as soon as we get it.

  • Deep Silver and Bioware are two of my favourite developers. This project should be great.
