Fallout 76 Beta Impressions: How is the Online Fallout Shaping Up?

Richard Walker

When it transpired that Fallout would be exploring online territory for Fallout 76, we weren't too sure that it was the right direction for the series to take. After all, Bethesda's series in its current guise has been about venturing into the post-apocalyptic wasteland alone, with maybe only a dog or super mutant friend as company.

While you can still play Fallout 76 as a lone survivor, facing feral ghouls and rogue androids with no one to back you up, it seems to defeat the object somewhat, this being a game better played with others, if you want to get the most out of it. And with public events and such, there's only so much you can achieve alone.

That's one thing that became abundantly clear while playing Fallout 76's recent B.E.T.A., which has to make a few concessions being always online and all that. V.A.T.S. just isn't the same, for instance, but then the card-based S.P.E.C.I.A.L. perks are quite cool. Swings and roundabouts, eh?

Fallout 76's B.E.T.A. is ongoing on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC until 4th November, with the next session live today at 7pm ET. You can consult the Fallout 76 Beta schedule here.

  • I think its amazing
  • I'm pretty underwhelmed. One thing that bothers me is the lack of detail that went into each area. Being from WV, there are so many things way out of place, and they don't look like what they are supposed to. Playing the other games and having visited those areas, the attention to detail is sorely lacking in 76 compared to the other games.
  • Felt like an inferior Fallout 4 in literally every way. How they took the framework for F4 and made it worse is beyond me.
  • Seen an article on Kotaku that there's a bug in game that deletes the entire 50GB beta. Classic Bethesda. First time in over a decade you won't be getting my money until your product is fixed and on sale.
  • Yea glad I only preordered for the beta with $5 gonna pass and wait for a sale. They should have just added coop to fallout 4 imo
  • As soon as they said no NPCs I wasn't interested. It's basically a bunch of dull quests. Go here, read that, go here, rinse and repeat.
  • @2 Same. Looks like the best Fallout yet, the world looks much better than Fallout 4. But it just feels like a lot of minor fetch quests lumped together. Very little story, the gun handling is still awful, which is more important now as VATs is diminished. I will get it if in a years time it has more content, or if its £15-20 on sale.
  • meh. basically fallout with most of the best bits ripped out and replaced with other people.
  • I still hope this bombs and Bethesda never does this again.
  • I'm a huge fan of all the Elder Scrolls and Fallout games, but this doesn't really grab me as essential to play. As others have said, it looks like a bunch of simple fetch quests tied together on a MP server. And no NPCs? It looks like someone created MP for Fallout 4 and they ditched it only to resurrect it and turn it into this. I'm definitely waiting on this...
