Far Cry New Dawn Video Review: Are the Light RPG Mechanics a Game Changer?

It might be a standalone spin-off, but that doesn't mean Far Cry New Dawn is lacking in new ideas. In fact, it's quite the opposite, its 'light RPG' mechanics actually adding a bit of welcome additional depth to the Far Cry formula. Also, those Prepper Stashes are back as Treasure Hunts. I like those.

Many of the core components from Far Cry 5 are still present and correct for New Dawn, including outposts, which now escalate in difficulty each time you decide to 'scavenge' them for more ethanol. Ethanol being the catch-all currency you'll need to upgrade your homebase of Prosperity.

Them light RPG bits also put enemies, vehicles, and weapons into tiers, from the lowly grey common level, all the way up to the fourth yellow 'Legendary' tier. Something you'll need to take into account. To find out more, watch our video review below, or read our written verdict here.

Far Cry New Dawn is out now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

  • From the sounds of it more like Border-Destiny Cry New Dawn than Far Cry but some of these Ubisoft franchises need a little change to them so not a bad thing.
  • Inevitable after AC series went RPG. Won’t surprise me if all their titles go this way
