RAGE 2 Will Address the Criticisms of Rage By Delivering "A Better Ending" - Interview

Richard Walker

The first RAGE was a decent enough shooter before it just kind of ended without warning. That wingstick was good fun, as were those scuttling mechanical spider drones, and id Software did what it does best: really robust shooty-bangs. RAGE 2 is aiming to deliver this time, however, with a proper ending being just one thing it aims to get right.

With Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios taking the development reins this time around, RAGE 2 is leaning in to its open-world expertise and propensity for creating chaos within that framework, while id Software handles the gunslinging bits. It's a potential match made in heaven, and it's shaping up rather well, as our hands-on preview here attests.

Having given the game a play for a few hours, we had a chat with id Software Studio Director Tim Willits, quizzing him on all things RAGE-related, from the anarchy and havoc you'll be able to wreak, to the weapons, environments, and, yes, the ending. Check it out below. RAGE 2 is out for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on 14th May 2019.

  • Well so far they seem to have “solved” that problem by making it a shooter with no story whatsoever. I hope it does have some kinda story as the last one had story trailers, and narration in the videos, etc but this one has 100% killing stuff without mention of there being anything else in the game.
  • @1 Can't have a bad story if there IS no story, right? Joking aside, I'm very on the fence with this. The gameplay LOOKS fun, but I dont wanna drop $60 on another open world game just to find out its substanceless and stretched too thin.
  • I'm fairly invested in gameplay centric Fps games as long as they're fun. Some of my favorite games had no discernible story whatsoever aside from a little paragraph on the manual. Also the fact that this as product led by id Software and Avalanche studios make the day1 buy a no brainer.
  • @3 I’d love to know how much id were actually involved and how much they got avalanche to do as I didn’t really like mad max (the game) but loved rage 1 (even if it lacked an end).
  • I liked the first Rage also except for the non ending whatever it was thingy! The next Rage for me is giving me doubts also though as I liked the dark side of the first game and now its complete opposite by the looks of it and is just meant to be bright coloured silly fun. I could be wrong but will wait for reviews before purchase.
  • @5 I enjoyed talking to npcs and doing quests and dialogue. All have been missing from all footage of 2 so far. Has me worried as I really wanted a sequel
  • To me all this game is is a better looking Borderlands 2, just crazy gun blazing fun, which could be an amazing thing if done right. Hopefully well see more in game footage soon.
