Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced Overwatch 2, building upon the team-based 6v6 PvP foundations of the original, alongside brand new narrative-driven co-op missions, in which you'll get to experience the "advent of a new Overwatch" as Winston, Tracer, and other characters from the original game, joining forces with new heroes.
"With Overwatch 2, we’re building the cooperative, narrative-driven game experience that players have been asking for since the original -- and that we’ve wanted to make for a long time," said Blizzard president J. Allen Brack. "We’re looking forward to telling the next chapter of this epic story in-game, and we’re excited to give players a whole-new kind of co-op experience built around progressing and customising their favourite heroes -- all while providing even more of everything they love about Overwatch today."
Overwatch 2 will feature the entire roster from the first game, as well as all maps and modes, and a new Push map type that sees teams competing to build a robot to push the objective to their side of the map. You'll also be able to bring across all of your accomplishments and loot collections from Overwatch 1, and new characters will obviously also be introduced, while upgrades to the game engine will support larger maps for co-op PvE play.
Story Missions will have you facing a new global crisis in a series of "intense, high-stakes" missions for up to 4 players, with the story having you team up as different sets of heroes to fight the omnic forces of Null Sector across the globe. Hero Missions, meanwhile, will see you defending cities against robot invasions, tackling Talon agents and other villainous forces seeking to raze the world to the ground.
'Powerful customisation options' will enable you to supercharge the abilities of heroes during co-op missions, like altering Reinhardt's Fire Strike to set enemies alight or boosting Tracer's Pulse Bomb to ignite a chain reaction, giving you an edge against lethal foes.
Furthermore, current Overwatch players will still be able to play alongside Overwatch 2 players in PvP multiplayer, and anyone still playing the first game can also look forward to playing Overwatch 2 heroes and maps, keeping the Overwatch community together, no matter which one you're playing. That's nice, innit.
Overwatch 2 will be coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
