Mass Effect 1 and 2 lead writer Drew Karpyshyn has announced that he is to become the Lead Writer at Archetype Entertainment who are working on a "multi-platform roleplaying game set in a new science fiction universe."
Karpyshyn made the announcement on his blog (spotted via Eurogamer) revealing he had joined the studio - which was set up by fellow former Bioware employee and creative director on Baldur's Gate, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic and Dragon Age: Origins to name but three - James Ohlen. Another member of the new team is Chad Robertson, who left Bioware in October of last year after 14 years with the studio.
Speaking on his time with Bioware and why he moved to the new studio, Karpyshyn said "I’ve been in the video game industry for twenty years now. When I started at BioWare, everything was fresh and exciting. It was a dream job – talented people working together to create epic games like Baldur’s Gate, KOTOR, Mass Effect and Dragon Age. But as we grew and became more successful, things changed. We became more corporate. We were less able to make what we loved, and the teams were pushed to create games based on market research rather than our creative instincts and passions. My dream job became just a job, and I lost the enthusiasm and excitement I once had."
"But with Archetype," he continued, "My passion has been rekindled. The feel in the studio reminds me of my early days at BioWare; I can feel the magic in the air. And even though I can’t get too deep into the specifics of what we’re working on yet,we’re already generating plenty of excitement in the industry."
There's not a huge amount given away on exactly the game Archetype are working on just yet, although their website says that they are "assembling a world-class team to build a multi-platform roleplaying game set in a new science fiction universe" and are working under the Wizards of the Coast umbrella. Though it's early days yet, this is one we and other RPG fans will definitely be keeping an eye on as time progresses, and fingers crossed it'll be making its way to an Xbox platform when it does.
